The AFL is aggressively targeting first choice athletes in NSW with high quality academies – the state is at risk of a significant talent drain to the football codes

Historically Cricket NSW has had little competition for the cricket talent pool.

Not only are the physical attributes of AFL/cricketers similar but the football

code forces players to select single sport earlier (age 15)

Cricket investment per player in NSW

$375

AFL investment per player in NSW $2,750

Families have started to push their sons

to consider and select AFL as their “sport of choice”. The AFL is 10x more visible in

Sydney than 20 years ago

Core to the AFL/GWS GIANTS strategy is to provide the Swans and GIANTS priority selections in the draft. This has accelerated the efforts to deliver

local talent to the GWS GIANTS

The Swans Academy has been overseen by premiership winning coach Paul Roos. The Swans have a KPI that by 2017 25% of their list will originate from NSW

AFL Skill and Physical Attributes

• Tall • Good hand-eye co-ordination

• Athletic • Competitive

Cricket is at risk of losing the next generation of stars from New South Wales

In their first year GIANTS players will complete 5000 appearances per year , Cricket players complete 320

$2,400,000 $800,000 $1,200,000

Total investment in 13 to 18 year olds = $4,400,000

v

Total investment in 13 to 18 year olds $450,000

• The recently released FFA development program also highlighted a shift to a 9-10 month development program. We are seeing this in Sydney as early as 12 (Ref: Steve Waugh)

• Football already has an elite summer (A-League) and winter (Premier League) season

Better Talent Identification

Better Talent Development

More Competitions

Focus: The net is cast wider, earlier

• Enhanced talent identification in

community based representative

pathways

• Head coaches of each age-group

will have an increased presence at

DCA and regional council fixtures

Focus: Individualised programs

• ALL age groups (U13 – U19)

• More players

• 24 week programs

• Standardised curriculum based

on national framework and

tailored IPPS

• Player access to professional

services – physiotherapy,

nutritionalist

Focus: The best v the best

• High level competitions for all

age groups (U12 to Under 19)

• 8 team competitions

Revised junior talent pathway based on cricket regions (12-19 years) The core benefits of the pathway are summarised by talent identification, talent development and competitions

•Provide a system via which the development of coaches and umpires can be magnified

•Improved talent identification Reinforce Coaching and Umpiring Pathways

•Create opportunities to engage and influence community volunteers Engage and Influence community volunteers

•There is potential to role the framework out as a model for Australian Cricket Provide a framework that can be applied

against cricket regions nationally

Key benefit – a clear and easy to articulate pathway

• Some first grade players elite • Other grades participation • Number of players from other states compete as well

• Elite national competition

• Newly established competition • Driven via Cricket NSW • Four hubs – North West, North East, South West and South East • 12-17yr olds, with Divisions to suit all abilities

• Pilot completed in 2013/2014 (LBL to be rebranded to T20Blast Girls in 2014/2015) • Targeting 26 regions (13 in metro) • 8 to 12 year olds

• Entry level skills programs • We require improved strategies to attract new female players • Research indicates it is important to have female role models at the delivery level

New in 2014/2015
