Chapter1Two men walk along the path near the river.2

Their names were George and Lennie.

3George is small, wiry, and sharped-featured.

Lennie is large and awkward.

They both dressed in denim farmhand attire.

5Lennie stops to drink from the river.6

Lennie has a dead mouse in his hand. George sees it and gets mad. Lennie promises that he didnt mean to kill it.

George throws the dead mouse away.

8George warns Lennie and says,Behave yourself!

9George tells Lennie that if he gets into any trouble while they are at the newranch, then he needs to run for the clearing where he will be safe.George complains to himself; I will be better off if I did not have to take care of Lennie.

George knew Aunt Clara.11

When she died, George had to start taking care of Lennie.George liked to play jokes on Lennie, but didnt realize others made fun of him.

12Chapter 2George and Lennie arrive at the ranch. They to go to the bunkhouse.

Candy is a swamper who warns George and Lennie about their boss.14

Candy has an old sheep dog he raised from a pup. The dog was now very, very old. He is blind and smells real bad.15

Candy says; The boss is mad because you were suppose to arrive the night before.

16The boss arrives and questions Lennie and George about their work history and skills.

17Lennie stayed quiet while George answers for him, but the boss grows suspicious about Lennies ability to speak.

The boss was satisfied with George and Lennies work history so they both started work right after supper.

19Curley is the bosss son and enters and sizes up to George.

20Curley fist his hands and assumes a fighters stance. He wants to know if George and Lennie are new guys.

21Candy says, Curley likes to pick fights and hates big guys. He was a lightweight fighter.

Curley has gotten worse since his marriage. Curleys wife is pretty but she has got the eye and flirts with Slim and Carlson.

George tells Lennie, Stay away from Curley and not to speak to him. George says, if Curley punches you, let him have it.

Curleys wife comes into the bunkhouse looking for Curley. Slim tells her that he saw Curly go into the house. Curleys wife leaves the bunkhouse.

George says, She is a tramp.

Lennie responds, She is purty. George warns Lennie, Keep away from her, just like you are suppose to keep away from Curley.

26Lennie says, I dont like this place, George. This is not a good place.

George reminds Lennie, We must stay long enough to make enough money to buy our own farm.

27Carlson enters into the bunkhouse and ask Slim about his new puppies. Lennie overheard the conversation and asks George if he could he have a puppy too.

Carlson wants to replace Candys old dog who is arthritic and barely can see or walk.29

Supper! Lennie gets off his bunk and as he approaches the door, Curley returns looking for his wife.

George said, She already came looking for you. George is afraid he will get tangled with Curley as they leave for supper.

Chapter 3Alone in the bunkhouse, George thanks Slim for giving Lennie a pup.

Carlson complains about Candys dog. Candy allowed Carlson to execute the dog.

Curley went looking for his wife in the barn and Whit and Carlson follows him, hoping for a fight.34

Slim is angry at Curley for constantly asking about his wife. Curley looking for someone to fight.35

Curley picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully. George tells Lennie to fight back. 36

Lennie crushed all the bones in Curley hands.37

Slim wants to get Curley to the doctor, but warns Curley that if he tells on Lennie and gets him fired, they will spread the news about how Curleys hand really got hurt.38

Lennie was afraid of what he did. He was afraid that George would not let him tend to the rabbits when they get their farm.39

39George tells Lennie, It is not your fault; you will get to tend the rabbits. He sends Lennie to wash his face.40

Chapter 4Crooks is a black-stable hand, proud, bitter and caustically funny.

Crooks tells Lennie he is playing with the puppies too much!42

While some of the men were out, Candys wife comes into the bunkhouse. Crooks tells her to leave before she gets them in trouble.43

Chapter Five:

Lennie is in the barn petting one of the puppies.

Sadly, the puppy is dead. Lennie killed it because he was too rough with it. 44

Curleys wife comes in and sees Lennie with the dead puppy. Lennie knows he isnt suppose to talk to her but she tells him its alright.She gets closer and closer to Lennie. She tells Lennie that she is soft like the puppy. She tells Lennie to feel her soft skin and silky hair.46

Lennie reaches to touch her hair. His hands are so big that he gets his fingers all tangled up in it. The women tries to get away. Lennie gets scared and holds her tighter and tighter. Then her body goes limp.47

Lennie covers her body with hay.

He runs away from the farm to the clearing where George will find him and he will be safe.48

Candy finds the woman's dead body. He tells George, who immediately knows what happened. George is afraid for Lennie. He knew they would put him jail, or beat him, or hang him.49

All of the men come into the barn. They all know what happened . Curley wants to kill Lennie. He gets his gun and goes after him.

George tells them to go South. But he knows Lennie would go North to the clearing.

Chapter 6:Lennie is at the clearing. He knows George is going to mad at him. All he wants to do is go to their farm so he can take care of the rabbits. He was to be happy and safe.52

George finds Lennie and tells him to turn around and look out across the river while he tells him the story of their farm.

As Lennie happily listens to the story, he tells George he was sorry. George told him he wasnt mad and that it didnt matter.

George pulls out his gun and shoots Lennie.

The other men told George he had to do what he had to do.

They left Lennies body by the river and went to get a drink.
