CHATSWORTH—For the life that Harry Grant lived it would be impossible for me to descibe it in just an article such as this for the life that he lived at a size of just 5”2 inch- es, he lived as a giant. For you Buzz....... He was born Aniello Grande and Over the many years that I’ve known Harry I’ve never met a person that equaled him on so many lev- els. He was a mans man, a sleet of iron, one who was tough as nails and yet one who had a heart of gold. His accomplish- ments over the years of his life can almost be described in a Hollywood script........He won a National Champion- ship at Long Island Univer- sity in Basketball in 1935. He would later go on and play for the “House of David Baseball club” in the forty’s which is where he acquired his last name of Grant. See the House of David was a traveling base- ball club that only Jewish ball players were allowed to play on but Harry(being an Italian Catholic} needed the money at the time so he would go on and change his last name. During this time Harry met the love of his life Miss Ida Camarano and they would go on to have two children Harry Jr. and Claudette and be married to each other for the rest of their lives. Now I think Harry will be best remembered for is his contributions to the sport of bowling. He came to California from New York converting his ath- letic skills from the basketball court and baseball diamond to the lanes and in 1965 he won the California State Singles Last of the Mohican’s is Gone Harry Grant Dies at 95 by Tony Grande and shortly after he was rec- ognized as one of the best left- handed bowlers on the West Coast with his figure eight delivery. Harry would later go on to become the co-owner of what would be known as Encino Bowl. It was known as the “Home of the Stars” and the home to such California bowl- ing greats such as Eric Forkel, Ron Winger, Jay Simon, Chris Cross, Foy Belcher and Tom Jamison just to name a few. It was the place that the “Harry Grant Singles Classic” ran for the heart of its 5 decade stint, being considered as one of the toughest tournaments on the west coast at its time and through his accomplishments in bowling he was recognized by the Southern California Hall of Fame Board and elect- ed to the Hall in 1995. Over the years Harry had some close friends like Mike Berrish, Larry Merit, Foy Belcher, Frank Natarelli and most importantly Bill Lane. I hope you guys know how much you meant to Harry. After Harry’s wife died in 2003 he lived on through the love of his family being surrounded by 7 great grand- children who he lived with up until the day he died...... That’s the way Kings go out. He was in the middle of the “pack” in qualifying, but really stepped forward in the semifinals to grab the #1 position on the stepladder. He only needed to win the one match, & even though it was one of his lowest scores of the day, he managed to consistently mark, it not strike, to secure the win. The rest of the stepladder consisted of Missy Pico, Rick Stangler, Jeff Nhieu & Paul Willey, Jr. In perpetual pot action, bowlers also earning some extra cash for Christmas were Geribelle Bungay, Gearoge Evans & Robert Anderson. Inland Empire NABI Champion Curt Snyder

RIVERSIDE—We want to thank Riverside Lanes for a great tournament! Our champion, Curt Snyder, a modest guy when it comes to his bowling accomplishments, has bowled numerous 300 games in his 50 years experience in this game. He won with his Hammer, Black Widow Bite, drilled by Norris Turner at Arlington Lanes. Curt bowls in the Executive League at Yucca Bowl where he bowled his 827 high series. Yucca valley re-ceived a lot of snow with the last storm we had, so Curt & his buddy, Bill Logan, who came in 2nd. were happy to be able to get over to Riverside Lanes. Curt, in fact, would like to dedicate this tournament to his buddy, Bill, for all his support & to NABI for the tournament.

Congratulations, Bill! He is now on his way for an entry into the Tournament of Champions at the NABI Nationals, coming in July, 2009.

We had a “Beat the Board” at Riveside, with (all with HDCP) our top 6 as follows:

Curt Snyder, bowling a 746 series, Bill Logan, bowling a 659 series, Jay Shackelford, with a 642 series, Ted Palmer, with a 630 series, Pierre Taylor, bowling a 618 series & Tim Bodiford, bowling a 608 series.

Our sidepot winners were:Brian Hatten, Jay Shackelford (2), Ted Palmer, Bill Logan,

Curt Snyder (2), Leticia Taylor & Mark Andrews We bowl next at Arrowhead Lanes in San Bernadino on Sat., Dec. 27. Have a very Merry Christmas & see our cover ad in the Bowling News.

NEW YORK BOWLER WINS BOWLING “STRIKE BIKE”Custom motorcycle designed by famed Orange County

Choppers featured on TV showARLINGTON, Texas - The Bowling Proprietors’ Association

of America (BPAA Beverage Committee congratulates Steve Arndt II of Waterloo, NY, on being selected as the GRAND PRIZE winner in the 2008 “Win the Strike Bike” promotion Ardnt is a league bowler at Falcon Lanes, a 16 lane center in Auburn, NY. The custom-designed bowling-themed motorcycle was built by the famed Teutul family at their Orange County Chopper facility in Newburgh, NY.

Participants in the nationwide contest received a special code whenever they purchased a 44-oz Pepsi beverage in specially-marked Strike Bike cups that were only available in BPAA-Pepsi centers. During the 45-day promotion, over 52,000 entrants logged on to www.GoBowling.com and entered their number for a chance to win.

“I bought several soft drinks between September 15 and Oc-tober 31, 2008,” said a still-beaming Ardnt. “But I never thought I’d be the one holding the winning number.”

A soon-to-be newlywed, Steve Ardnt and his fiancée are big bowlers and huge Orange County Chopper fans. As part of the package Steve and several of his family members traveled to the headquarters of Orange County Choppers to meet up with the Teutuls who custom made the Strike Bike which was featured in a 2008 episode of their TV show, American Chopper, on the Learning Channel.

“I still can’t believe it,” Ardnt said while taking a private tour of the Newburgh, NY facility where the TV show is filmed. “I mean, I was flipped out about winning the bike and meeting the OCC guys!

The Strike Bike was by far the largest and best received pro-motion that the Beverage Committee provided to centers that participate in the BPAA-Pepsi national program, and plans are already in the works for 2009’s promotion.

National Deaf Bowling NewsNAVARRO ROLLS DOWNEY DEAF LEAGUE

1st 300 AT KEYSTONE by Connie Marchione

NORWALK—Flash news was received late Tuesday night Dec. 16, from Downey Deaf Bowlers League bowler Gardy Rod-gers who faxed to this writer about Francisco Navarro being the first bowler to hit a 300 game in Downey Deaf Bowlers’ 40 plus years history at Keystone Bowl.

This is Francisco’s third career perfecto.Gardy wrote that the game was done in a very exciting 2nd

game duel between Francisco and Gorman Low, which had both bowlers matching strikes all the way up to 9th frame. In the tenth Francisco struck but Gorman left a single pin standing on a good hit, spared and struck on his fill ball for a 279. Then all bowling was stopped to watch Francisco calmly struck out.

When pressed for the each bowler’s series, Gardy said, Fran-cisco had 166-300-143 for 599 and Gorman 215-279-207 for 701. This writer could not recall Downey Bowlers’ first 700 but congratulations to both bowlers for the league’s first milestones.

So far three of Southland’s deaf leagues had perfect games made, with Carl Malucci recording one each in So. Calif. Deaf Traveling and Angel West Deaf League and Francisco Navarro in Downey Deaf League. I am not sure about the fourth if Hugo Horn accomplished his first in San Diego Deaf Bowling Associa-tion league. Who will be first to roll a 300 in Riverside Silents and Moreno Valley Deaf Leagues.

Also so far since start of this season, deaf bowlers Malucci and Navarro hit perfectos and Bob Jones a close one with a 298. Those with front nine strikes and failed in 10th were, Maluc-ci twice with 279 and 277, Pablo Yoma 279 in So. Calif. Deaf Travel and Gorman Low in Downey Deaf League. Any others I missed???

Thanks to Gardy Rodgers for reporting this flash news.

MALUCCI’S TEAM NATION HITS 960 FOURSOME MIXED TEAM GAME AT RED ROCK

LAS VEGAS—Carl Malucci reported that his Team Na-tion team in the Sunday Mixers League joined the Red Rock’s Wednesday Mixers League and hit the high game of 960 with Melchora Lee’s 170, Joey Harris’ 267, Barrett Lee’s 246 and his 277. With that 277 Carl was lucky to finish with a 701 to keep his streak of 700s going. So far in that Wednesday league, Carl had series of 764-701-753.

That 753 was on Dec.17 with games 258-258-237. On the Sunday league, counting the previous reported run of 7 consecu-tive 700 plus series, Carl continued his run with 750-711-773. That 773 was on Dec. 14 with stepped up games 248-256-269, making a remarkable 10th 700 in row in one league. Counting both leagues Marvelous Malucci has 13 straight 700s in one Center and 10 of them are over 750. His goal is now 15 straight before year’s end. Have a Happy and Healthful New Year.

Will Jackson Picks Up 2nd Donkee Title at KeystoneWill Jackson picked up his 2nd title after leaving the Amateur

Will would also like to thank Mom Darlene and Big Sis Krischna for their support of his bowling over the years.
