DANFORTH DIRECTORYOF SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
This publication is a small but important milestone in the development ofmore effective learning materials. Throughout the country, instructors in all sub-ject-matter areas are using their skills to develop learning materials that willhelp the student learn at an individual pace and in an effective manner. It issomewhat surprising to find so many self-instructional materials in the field ofEnglish (often considered a subject beyond the scope of learning objectivesand auto-tutorial materials) and the Social Sciences. It is an indication of thewidespread use of self-instructional materials.
Some of the units cover an entire course, while others deal only with a par-ticular segment of a course. Each learning segment is called a unit and eachunit contains from one to fifty or more packages. The units of self-instructionalmaterial represent varied instructional modes, extending from paper and pencilto the computer, and an attempt has been made to indicate in this directory themethod of instruction employed.
The listing in the Directory is by subject matter. Included on each page isthe author, institution (including address and phone number where available),the target population or specific course in which the material is used, theavailability of the material, and the number and titles of the individual packages. The information on each page is not always complete because the datareceived were not uniformly listed.
It is the hope of the UCLA Danforth group and the ERIC 8,Iearinghouse thatan up-dated edition will be available in January 1972. To make this possible, allinterested persons should submit any information they have on self-instructional materials for inclusion in the 1972 edition. A form is included forthis purpose.
Further information regarding the Directory should be directed to:ERIC Clearinghouse for Junior Colleges96 Powell LibraryUniversity of CaliforniaLos Angeles, California 90024
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe following people were instrumental in collecting the data included in
this Directory: Stuart R. Johnson of the National Laboratory for HigherEducation and his consortium; B. Lamar Johnson of the UCLA Junior CollegeLeadership Program and the League for Innovation in the Community College;Elsie Withey and Wanda Sterner of the Los Angeles Chapter of the NationalAssociation for Programmed Instruction (LANAPI). Rose Sloan did the com-pilation of data.
Special note should be taken of the efforts of M. Stephen Sheldon whocarried on the tedious task of pulling together the loose ends and provided themoving spirit that such a project requires.
