rst Year Experience MentsFirst Year Experience Mentors (FYEMs) are instrumental in helping students make personal adjustments to campus and academic life during the summer and throughout the entire year. Check your Millikin email in late July for a message from your FYEM!
rst Year University SeminarAn integral part of your first week on campus is beginning your University Seminar course. The course is intended to be a unique learning opportunity for students entering Millikin. University Seminar focuses on two key skills: (1) critical and ethical reasoning, and (2) reflection. These skills are indispensible to professional success, democratic citizenship in a global environment, and the discovery and creation of a personal life of meaning and value. In addition, University Seminar blends theory and practice by engaging students in service learning and by addressing specific student success topics. As seen on the schedule, you will spend a fair amount of time with your fellow classmates, FYEM, and faculty.
What Will I Learn at rst Week?During your First Week Seminar course, you will connect with faculty and students, and become adjusted to your environment.First Week also affords you the fantastic opportunity to explore issues unique to you. You will be led by your mentors in an exercise designed to break down harmful perceptions of the role alcohol plays on a college campus. Finally, you will have the opportunity to be a part of several Millikin traditions. Your First Week experience will formally close with two long-standing academic traditions: the Candlelight Ceremony and Opening Convocation.
