Workplace Experience Program 2011
In response to the “Other Learning Experiences” component of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, in June and July 2011 this year the school organized the “Workplace Experience Program 2011” which aimed to provide our senior students with 2 to 4 days “real life” experience in a workplace context. With the support of parents, 108 placements were successfully arranged. Students were excited at the prospect of exposure to different areas of experience. For this school term, we are asking for even more support from parents to provide workplace tasks to facilitate this meaningful and rewarding program. Now, let’s have a glance at the students’ sharing.
Angela Tsoi (6C)KindergartenI learnt that our working att i tude is very important. I saw that the teachers in the Kindergarten treated the students as their own daughters rather than just as students. Only when we love our job can we handle our work well. Also, it is important to act as a role model in front of the young kids as they are really small and need to rely on adults a lot.
Pinky Cheung (6BD) TradingSince I worked in the design department, I gained more knowledge about the daily work of designers and how the company functions.
Dorothy Ching (6BD) Fashion retailerI learnt how to decorate a boutique and how to deal with window display models, like changing and ironing the clothes to make them look more attractive.
Vivien Lee (6C) KindergartenI took part in a real life design project and the boss explained how they complete their work in general. Working in a Kindergarten allowed me to experience taking care of a group of school children, sometimes on my own!
Michelle Leung (6C)Clerical My most memorable experience was when my partner and I went to distribute a document to another office by hand. Naturally we two went there together. The staff in that “other” office asked “You two came here together just to bring this?” This made me realize some important requirements of work: independence, efficiency and self-sufficiency.
Carrie Lam (6BD) Research The most valuable experience was interviewing the professor about her research work and writing an article about her, which was published on the internet.
Virginia Sit (6C) Travel AgentThe most valuable experience was that an accountant shared with me about her work and the business of the company. She also taught me about trading, such as invoicing and sales records, writing cheques, filing, and typing.
Charmaine Ng (6BD) TradingI visited the cold storage room and l ea rn how to organize all items in systematic order by using different systems.
What was the most valuable experience you had in the workplace?
16 17
Jennifer Lee (6C)EducationTo work with the computer and learn how to stay seated for a long period of time!
Sara Mak (6BD) MarketingTo use new software to create a webpage. I had to take a lot of time to familiarise myself with this new software.
Becky Chan (6BD) MarketingThere was a presentation with my teammates at the end of the program and I had to present what we had been doing throughout the program to the manager directly. As well as preparing the content of presentation, experiencing the stress of presenting is what was most valuable.
Cherrie Chung (6A)Kindergarten I had a wonderful time with the little kids in the kindergarten. I enjoyed every moment, having lessons and learning with them. I was able to learn about the current education system for kindergartens.
Michelle Lam (6C) Electric Company IThe most difficult part for me was to be 100% concentrated on my task as my thinking might drift away while handling even a simple task.
What was the most difficult part for you in the workplace experience?
And Finally…We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the parents and their companies for offering the placements to support our Workplace Experience Program in June and July 2011.
Gigi Ma (6A)Public LibraryThe most difficult part was to sort books. It is because we needed to arrange the books in the right order, so we had to spend a lot of time doing this.
Mona Tam (6BD) Research Somet imes we needed to write reports in a given period of time and we didn’t really have enough time!
Jocelyn Leung (6A) Accounting FirmOn the second day, there was an urgent piece of work. The documents had to be finished before 6:00pm. I made many mistakes writing the documents and needed to make a good few corrections. Also, the accounting work given to us was a bit difficult so we couldn’t catch up with the work immediately.
Doris Au (6DB) Logistics and Storage The most difficult part was counting goods in a very short period of time. However, there was some noticeable improvement after 2 or3 times of counting.
Janet Lo (6A) AccountingTrying to communicate with the staff and asking them questions whenever I had a problem.
Michelle Law (6A) Cleaning Service Company The most difficult part was the telephone reception because I needed to know very clearly about the staff in the company so that I could correctly transfer the phone call to the right person.
