In 2014, TCDC carried on with its mission begun in previous years, namely to turn creative design ideas into real goods and services that contribute to the growth of the Thai economy and the betterment of people’s lives. The organization has expanded its network in service design through the seminars, lectures and workshops. The conclusion of each projects has been developed into collaboration between public and private organization in each locality.

PREFACE
The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) was one of our partners in the collaboration of service design research and conference which its conclusion has been put into Terms of Reference (TOR) as the prototype of high speed rail system design in Thailand.
Despite these ongoing efforts, though, the network of 13 miniTCDCs located all over Thailand remains the major portal through which design and entrepreneurial know-how is shared. This is why TCDC works with local educational institutions and communities to expand opportunities for learning about recent design trends at the regional level. TCDC has projects to identify community problems, map out solutions and improve local conditions, conducted by experts in community development and design. At present, there are three such pilot projects underway, in Songkhla, Kampaengphet and Ubon Ratchathani. These activities not only benefit local communities but build on the knowledge and hands-on experience of teachers and students in the project areas.
In addition to this more results-oriented, grassroots work, TCDC still focuses on education as part of our core mission. We continue to organise exhibits, provide dedicated design library services, hold in-house workshops and training programs, and build professional networks to promote the exchange of knowledge and new ideas – all activities intended to educate and inspire.
All the projects and activities we ran throughout the year 2014 have already begun to bear fruit. Thai society is beginning to think of design as a creative thought process aimed at solving problems and creating new opportunities for business success. But for the practical terms, much work remains to be done. TCDC will continue working in the future to extend the benefits of its experiences, expertise and resources to a wider segment of the Thai nation.

TCDC opened in Bangkok in November 2005, and Chiang Mai in April 2013.

TCDC aims to inspire and promote creative thinking in Thai society. From exhibitions, workshops, seminars and lectures to research facilities, TCDC offers activities and experiences that entertain as they educate. These multi-dimensional experiences form an important basis for developing the knowledge and skills of Thailand’s human resources. TCDC also works with a number of private and public-sector organisations as well as educational institutions to encourage the application of “design thinking” to improving the quality of life and creating new business opportunities, thus accelerating the structural transformation of the Thai economy into a real player in the global “creative economy”.

ExhibitionsThe 800-square-meter exhibition area, designed to international museum standards, houses both a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions.
Permanent ExhibitionThe 300-square-meter gallery is home to “What Is Design?”, an exploration of how ten countries renowned for their innovative design have interpreted their cultural uniqueness into 20th century industrial design classics and presents the “genius loci” of industrial design in Thailand.
Temporary ExhibitionsThe 500-square-meter gallery presents TCDC-sponsored and international exhibitions. The goal is to foster design knowledge and inspire visitors by showcasing internationally acclaimed works of design, with detailed descriptions of their concept and origin.
One of Asia’s largest design libraries, the TCDC Resource Center houses over 50,000 volumes of design publications, more than 210 periodicals, trend books for upcoming seasons as well as over 7,000 items of design resources in multimedia formats (films, documentaries, and TCDC educational programmes on iPod and iPad). To help translate imagination and creativity into marketable design works, three online databases are available for members: business and marketing database GMID, fashion industry and design trend database WGSN and digital media database STASH. The Center also offers facilities for members such as reading and multimedia rooms, as well as regularly holds inspiring activities and mini-exhibitions that complimented TCDC’s events.

Asia’s first innovative design materials library offers designers, students, and manufacturers the chance to explore materials used by leading international designers. With over 3,753 material samples used in the production of a wide range of products, Material ConneXion® keeps TCDC members abreast of new developments in the world of design materials. Material ConneXion® Bangkok is the fourth branch of Material ConneXion®, which has 9 branches globally in New York, Cologne, Daegu, Istanbul, Milan, Skövde, Tokyo, Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Each miniTCDC offers a smaller version of TCDC’s facilities and services, consisting of a design library with a collection of 250 books and 24 material samples along with access to an online database. The books and materials at each miniTCDC are rotated every semester. Interesting exhibitions, lectures seminars and training under the topics e.g. Design Thinking, Service Design and Product Development are also held at the nationwide network of miniTCDCs to give students, faculty, and local entrepreneurs knowledge on how to design and develop products with “design thinking” without having to travel to Bangkok.
The network universities of miniTCDC are Burapha University, Chiangrai Rajabhat University, Khon Kaen University, Kamphaeng Phet, Rajabhat University, Mahasarakham University, Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University, Naresuan University, Phetchaburi Rajabhat University, Phuket Rajabhat University, Songkhla Rajabhat University, Ubon Ratchathani University, Rajamangala University of Technology Isan and Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University.
TCDC Chiang Mai is our first regional full-service design resource center aiming to offer the knowledge and tools to turn original, innovative ideas into real economic returns. Our approach is focused on wedding Thailand’s intellectual assets, rich cultural heritage, and modern technologies to create globally competitive goods and services, and build Thailand’s creative economy.
Today’s word is changing in any number of ways, and TCDC has its eye on the evolution of design know-how and always seeks out the latest concepts in design, e.g. design thinking, service design, strategic design management and business design, to share with the Thai society through lectures, seminars, and workshops. TCDC also provides support for innovation in design processes specific to certain organisations in both the public and private sectors. It is TCDC’s hope that the public and private sectors as well as Thai designers will take these new ideas and concepts to heart and find ways to put them to practical use.
Here is where creative entrepreneurs build their business network, find all the news and information that matter: from brand building, latest innovations and consumer trends, creative business management, to case studies that will affect design and business practice. The website aims to inspire Thai entrepreneurs and designers to develop their own business and empower them to create globally competitive products and services. It also offers learning resources for students and the general public who are interested in design and creative thinking which may inspire their future careers. TCDCCONNECT’s primary goal is to serve as a bridge between producers and designers so that together they can create high quality goods and services, leading to competitive and sustainable businesses that contribute to the economic well-being of the country.
Creativity is often sparked by studying the experiences of others. One of the most important of TCDC’s activities is, therefore, to provide a forum for international and local creative entrepreneurs and designers to share experiences and find inspiration from one another. This dialogue propels the creative process and the transformation of design concepts into reality. The collaboration between entrepreneurs and designers will foster a creative network that is one of the keys to concrete success. This interaction can also promote the recognition of value and talent throughout the network, which in turn facilitates the creation of design thinking through coordination and collaboration.

TCDC develops a body of knowledge and disseminates it to the public in the forms of book, publication, and online media. We aim to expand the knowledge and understanding inductive to the development of creative economy among Thai students, designers, creative professionals, and entrepreneurs in several aspects: from research paper, magazine to a compilation of works in design-and creativity-related subjects. In 2013, TCDC publications included Creative Thailand free monthly magazine, Made in Chiang Mai book, Isan Materials book, Creativities Unfold, Bangkok 2012 book and DVD, as well as free download eBooks such as TREND 2014 By TCDC and Service Design Workbook.

The Shop@TCDC is a window onto the world of design, featuring an assortment of products by Thai and international designers that focus on originality, utility and innovative production techniques.
The primary purpose of the shop is to serve as encouragement to students, designers, and forward-thinking businessmen and women to “think outside the box” when developing new products and services for today’s market for both local and foreign startups such as NEC Project and OTOP Ban Tawai group. The Shop@TCDC provides a place for local designers and entrepreneurs to showcase their latest designs, including product and window display, and seek advice on product conception and development and the placement of new products in the market. The local and foreign-made items on display in the shop are meant to inspire Thai designers and give them a better understanding of the interests of the domestic market.
The variety of unusual items assembled at the Shop@TCDC attests to the value of the word “design” and its importance in setting a particular product apart from its competitors in the market. The shop makes it clear that design is vital in building business value.
Tucked away inside TCDC is a cultural getaway. Combining cinema, music, and classic Italian coffee and design, Creative Space is the place to chill on your own or meet up with friends.

Society, history, politics, economics, geography and religion – all produce unique pressures on the design process. Design is not just about style and inspiration. The collective imagination of a country is conditioned by how it relates to issues as diverse as self-expression, class, landscape, war and ideology.
Through the concept of ‘genius loci’, or ‘talent of the place’, we explore how each country is disposed to certain unique talents. These talents make up the cultural ‘genius’ of the country, and are the result of a confluence of forces, from the physical to the spiritual. ‘What is Design?’ looks at how ten countries: England, Italy, France, Germany, USA, Spain, Netherlands, Finland, Japan and Brazil, have each interpreted their cultural uniqueness into 20th century industrial design classics and explores the “genius loci” of industrial design objects that distinctively express Thailand’s cultural identity.
The Digital Fabrication technology or 3D Printing offers a solution. With the printer’s compact size, 3D Printing allows entrepreneurs to produce prototype with shorter-and-cheaper process, or even to create the finish-lined product itself at home through user-friendly software. Furthermore, it increases wider range possibility of making the complex-structured object more than the earlier method.
In the near future, when the potential of the technology assists us farther and faster, the intersection of two lines, the imagination and the production, may come closer together and become more tangible.

รถไฟสายความสข เศรษฐกจใหมจากรางสเมองDesigning a Happy Journey: Reviving Kyushu through creativity
The success of “JR Kyushu” is a striking case study not only of the advancement of technology and effective management, but also of a winning combination of “Kyushu’s elements”, “business acumen” and “design process”. The principle was applied to every aspect of the rail services and the company became Japan’s biggest provider of sightseeing railway operations. It also involved the local community in the development of train, helped boost local businesses both in agricultural and tourism sectors, and generated income which allowed more local development and better visiting experience.
This travelling exhibition from Japan has been retitled from "Eiji Mitooka Happy Railway Design Exhibition", with rearranged content. It was originally held at TCDC during 16 March to 26 May 2013, as collaboration between Kyushu Railway Company and TCDC, in association with Don Design Associates with support from JETRO, Bangkok.
Living in a free world, every decision we make shapes us into who we are, and who we will be. And each decision, in turn, shapes the future of ourselves, our community, our society and our world.
The more globalization and technology melt the world into one, the more being “different” and “better” become meaningful. The future, therefore, isn’t about choosing between sameness and difference, but rather about both things working together to generate new spaces for all of us to exercise our “values” and “wisdom” to give ourselves – and the world – a more creative design.

This exhibition by Material ConneXion® Bangkok was a pilot project to develop inter-professional relationships and collaborative working between Thai material manufacturers and new designers.
During the project’s nine-month working timeline, four pairs of participants had explored the potential and possibility of Thai innovative materials as well as the thinking and manufacturing processes, objective and differing views towards consumption. The experiences had helped the creative pairs to come up with new products that satisfied production, function and commercial demands.

The showcase illustrated the story of drinking water, one of the four essential elements to human kinds, in this creative economy era. With increasingly sophisticated consumers, products and services need to be more creative to satisfy the increasingly complex demand. At the same time, looking ahead to potential issues and consequences in the design and production of products is also imperative, as well as the consideration in social responsibility and sustainable consumption.
Nowadays many businesses choose to invest in their latest innovations or new technologies in order to attract more customers and upgrade their profile to be more up-to-dated and reliable. In contrast, few find it important to invest in something intangible like service.
The exhibition illustrated every Service Design process as well as invited visitors to explore how Service Design works and take part in the improvement of TCDC Resource Center services to better meet customers’ needs.
This exhibit was the culmination of a project that provided real, hands-on experience to 32 future designers and creative thinkers from a number of upcountry universities. These student participants, representing 14 institutions allied with the miniTCDC network and TCDC Chiang Mai, worked closely with OTOP businesses to learn about specific problems connected with local conditions and business needs. The project, which lasted six months, provided real experience in the design, production and testing of new creative products. The exhibition tells the story of 32 products that grew out of the project.

In cooperation with the northern office of the National Nanotechnology Center of the National Science and Technology Development Board, TCDC organised a project called Nanotechnology: A Creative Way to Add Value to Textiles.” Highlighting the commercial and industrial advantages of nanotechnology in the manufacture of textiles, the exhibition showed textile producers in Chiang Mai the real benefits of incorporating new technology into their own production processes as a means of giving added value to community-made textile goods. The project included a workshop and contest to select the 8 best new product ideas, which were featured in an exhibition.

TCDC, in association with the Typographic Association of Bangkok (TAB) and the Type Directors Club of New York (TDC) exhibited more than 300 of the year's best new typographic designs. Chosen from over 2,000 entries from countries all around the globe, these award-winning designs are the focus of the exhibition which was inaugurated in New York and has since travelled to the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Vietnam. Now in its 60th year, this annual event has made its way to Thailand for the very first time.

Revealed the working process behind an 8-month collaborative project which paired 4 material manufacturers with 4 designers. Their close collaboration entailed not only an exchanging of knowledge and experience between each pair, but also a cross-pollination of ideas among other participants in every step of the project: from materials research, experiment and prototyping development to creating product prototypes. The objective was to develop practical products with commercial and industrial-scale production viability that demonstrate the new potential of “material” in different aspects.

Author Philip Cornwel-Smith wrote the influential book Very Thai: Everyday Popular Culture partly to explain the way such ordinary things can acquire a sense of Siamese place. In this talk, he showed how that might require addressing some cultural habits and giving attention to underlying themes, hidden traits and the creative process itself, along with how everyday goods and services can be imbued with a marketable Thai character.

Accompanying the exhibition “The Cooperation II”, this talk shared the stories behind collaboration between 4 pairs of entrepreneurs and designers. Their co-creation had led to original prototypes that demonstrated new potentials of materials such as leather wares made from dry bio-cellulose, how to design new and versatile material and how to change the image of natural fiber fabric to attract wider market.
In our efforts to develop the country's creative business community and give Thai entrepreneurs the ability to compete globally, TCDC has as our primary mission to sponsor activities that bring together members of the local design community and businesses both in Thailand and abroad. These activities provide important opportunities for participants to share experiences and new ideas and build bridges that will help Thai designers and businesspeople find their niche in the global creative economy. This is a key step in raising the value of Thai goods and services in the world marketplace.
At the same time, TCDC works to build cooperation between private business, government services and Thailand's design community. The focus of TCDC's activities has been to expand awareness of the benefits of service design in the government sector in the hope of yielding real rewards for members of the Thai public.

The Debut Wall is a forum for business networking centered on the launch of new products in the creative business community. Focusing on the significance of brand building and the confidence in “Made in Thailand” products among the export sector, TCDC invited Peter Mack of Landor Associates to discuss the challenges and opportunities inherent in the Thai brand: from the current expectations attached to a product or service if endorsed by Thailand as the point of origin, how these expectations might change in the future, and how "Made in Thailand" might become a consistent and wide-spread statement of product/service quality, one that serves to strengthen the Thai economy.

Over 7,500 materials samples from all over the world for entrepreneurs and designers to research and develop their products
Material ConneXion® Bangkok not only contains over 7,500 materials samples from all over the world for entrepreneurs and designers to research and develop their products, but it also acts as a channel to promote Thai products in global markets through its database in Material ConneXion® New York, Bangkok, Cologne, Daegu, Istanbul, Milan, Skövde and Tokyo. The Bangkok branch actively searches for innovative Thai materials which are presented to the Selection Jury at Material ConneXion® New York. Materials which meet selection requirements are added to the library’s database and displayed at all branches.
Between its opening on 14th November 2005 and 30th September 2014, 342 Thai materials from 191 companies have been added to Material ConneXion® database. The collection also contains samples of some 3,753 design materials from all over the world, making it an important resource for library members researching materials for their own design ideas. Material ConneXion Chiang Mai opened on April 2, 2013 with over 350 materials on display.
With over 40 years of experience in the business of growing mulberry trees and raising silkworms for the production and sale of top-quality silk thread to silk weavers both in Thailand and abroad, Chul Thai has steadily grown to become the country’s largest manufacturer of silk thread.
To Chul Thai, textile industry innovations and concern for the environment figure at the top of the company’s priorities. It also recognizes the opportunity for Thai farmers to become the world’s leading suppliers of silk thread for the global textile industry. To realize this ambition, Chul Thai has developed a new material that meets the needs of both producers and consumers. This is an organic silk thread, certified as such by the European Union’s Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) in November 2012. The natural white thread, the first of its kind to be awarded this certification, is the product of specially bred silkworms. It has the sheen of Thai silk and the smooth, satiny texture associated with Japanese silk. Cocoons are hand-picked. Then they are softened, and, using a semi-automatic process, a single thread is spun from it. Silk is a natural fiber known for its strength, luster, softness, and resistance to heat, and the specially developed silk thread produced by Chul Thai Silk has been selected for inclusion in the Material ConneXion® database. This has opened new channels for sales to foreign buyers, among them the trendy fashion retailing giant H&M. In fact,
Chul Thai silk is the raw material at the heart of a new line of clothing called Conscious Exclusive, which features textiles that are produced organically and pose no harm to consumers. Other buyers include Japanese clothing manufacturers targeting the domestic market. The key to the clothes’ appeal is a tag that reads “Thai Organic Silk”, a guarantee of quality recognized around the world.

The tradition of hand-made arts and crafts for which Chiang Mai is renowned has provided local businesses with a wide range of products known around the world. One such company is Bua Bhat, a manufacturer of handicrafts and home accessories with a distinctive style and standard of quality that have won them a worldwide reputation. Bua Bhat is best known for using fabric scraps to make new added-value goods. The products are made by hand by members of the local communities near the Bua Bhat factory. Most of them are tribal people like the Yong and Thai Leu, for whom weaving and sewing are skills bred in the blood. Given the right training, these dedicated craftsmen and women produce work of exquisite quality and beauty.
When TCDC Chiang Mai opened in April 2013, Bua Bhat’s product line called Popcorn, 3D cotton items made from fabric scraps, was chosen for possible inclusion in the Material ConneXion® database. Selection was made official in March 2014. Using a process called upcycling, Bua Bhat takes small scraps of cotton rolled up in tight little spirals and sews them together by hand to make what looks like a deep pile. It is a clever way to make use of what would otherwise be waste. The colors are also extremely durable, and this handmade fabric can be made into decorative items, rugs, pillowcases and even clothing.
Bua Bhat’s sales prospects were given a major boost when Dr. Andrew Dent, the assistant director for innovations at the New York branch of Material ConneXion® , featured Popcorn in a column for Surface magazine, hailing it as the “fabric of the future”. The piece, which appeared in the magazine’s April 2014 edition, also praised the fabric for being eco-friendly, reflecting its local origins, and contributing to the betterment of life in the community..

Reangwa Standard Industry is a company with a social conscience. Equally committed to growth and efficiency, Reangwa has adopted policies that have helped to make it a leader in the manufacturer of biodegradable plastic products.
In conjunction with the domestic plastics industry and the Thai Board of Industries, Material ConneXion® Bangkok has createda network of plastics professionals and invited them to submit biodegradable plastic products for inclusion in the Material ConneXion® database. Reangwa Standard Industry sent for consideration a biodegradable PLA polymer made from corn or sugar cane starch. The substance is ideal for making microwavable dishes and other kinds of food containers using either injection molding or heat induction methods. Once it was chosen for the Material ConneXion® database, samples have been displayed at branches all over the world.
TCDC also worked closely with Reangwa Standard Industry’s Vice President Mr. Apiphop Phungchanchaikul to organize a workshop where participants could learn all about plastic, an essential material for the manufacture of a countless range of everyday products. The workshop discussed properties, limitations, prices, and production methods, and culminated in a tour of the Reangwa factory where participants could see for themselves how plastic is made. This was truly the kind of first-hand experience that just isn’t possible in a classroom, and it was offered to TCDC members and service users.
“miniTCDC” is an ambitious joint project between TCDC and 13 regional universities aiming to serve the diverse knowledge of design which is accessible to local people in order to be useful and support their imaginative ideas. Its objective is to share knowledge and learning resources with local students, professors, designers and entrepreneurs throughout the country including organize the creative events such as CU2014 symposium, the lectures held at local universities and various workshops in Bangkok.
In 2014, miniTCDC in collaboration with Thai Health Promotion Foundation ran the project as a support for creative community through the youth power. The project gave Service Design knowledge to the young generation by the expert team in order to apply the process to their local community and to raise the quality of living for the locals as the prototype for other provinces nationwide.
TCDC Chiang Mai is our first regional design resource center. Continuing to expand design learning opportunities, TCDC reaches out to entrepreneurs, designers, students, people in Chiang Mai and the upper north, offering the knowledge and tools to turn original, innovative ideas into real economic returns. Our approach is focused on wedding Thailand’s intellectual assets, its rich cultural heritage, and the latest technologies to create distinctive goods and services with strong potential for success in the marketplace, and building Thailand’s creative economy.
Services offered by TCDC Chiang Mai include: • TCDC Resource Center which houses over 8,000 volumes of design publications, 70 periodicals, 900 items of design resources in multimedia formats, as well as WGSN designdatabase andGMDmarketing database. • Material ConneXion® Chiang Mai with over 7,000 material database and 300 rotating samples along with sample products made from such materials. • Seminars and workshops on design and product development. • Design and Educational Exhibitions. • Creative Showcase for emerging designers and entrepreneurs.
Today creative thinking is one of the most powerful engines for economic growth. It is a key for unlocking the door to exciting new ways of seeing and living. That is why it is so important to help the country's young people find educational and professional outlets for expressing their own creative ideas now and in the future. TCDC has consistently sponsored activities specifically for young people in Bangkok and the provinces that give them access to design resources and open their eyes to new possibilities in the world of creative design. TCDC is also committed to contributing to the development of Thailand's design and entrepreneurial communities through a range of activities intended to build business networks and lead to the creation of new products and services with real-life applications. In all of these ways, TCDC is working to improve the quality of life for the people of Thailand and strengthen the country's creative economy.
Students, designers, entrepreneurs, government and private organisations and any interested parties can contact TCDC to arrange a group visit free of charge. A guided tour of the knowledge resources and all services available are provided by TCDC staff to introduce visitors to TCDC’s mission and benefits of services.

TCDC has an important role in improving the creative skills and know how of students, designers, business men and women, and members of government and private organizations around the country. One of its premier activities is Visit TCDC, which takes two forms.The first of these are visits to the TCDC design library, where people can get an idea of the wealth of resources available to those interested in the world of creative design. Other visits are off-site. TCDC staff travel to interested organizations to share information about the Design Center's roles and responsibilities and pave the way for their participation in future TCDC activities.
This is a series of one-day lectures and workshops aimed at giving participants from various fields like service design and packaging design new insights into design and creative thinking. The sessions are run by experienced TCDC personnel and outside experts and target designers and business people, who are the main drivers of the country's creative economy. TCDC hopes that these activities will provide inspiration for the development of new products and services.
To provide an enjoyable way of learning for members and visitors and reflect the image of a “design resource center and more”, TCDC launched several accompanying activities for exhibitions, Ploy Saeng Festival, and other events.
A creative and fun way to exercise creative muscles and develop a creative thinking skill with TCDC’s Design Dice Game which helps you discover that everything is possible in the world of design with each roll of dice, and Flip & Find Game which explores the stories behind world’s famous products we see and use daily through the card game, by using information from the exhibition “What is design?”.
Different books are regularly put on display so that things never get stale and library goers always find something new and surprising to catch their eyes.
A key mission of the TCDC Resource Center is to providea place of learning where inspiration is nurtured and the creative thinking process is promoted. In order to fulfill this mission, the center has worked hard to offer a better and wider range of design-related services and activities. By linking the IT system and the library search engine, it has made it easier for members to access research materials. The center regularly surveys members to determine their needs so that it can provide the specific resources tailored to meet these needs. And to keep resource materials fresh and up-to-date, the center makes more than 100 new books and publications available every two weeks.
The center also highlights special selections of books related to current activities and events taking place at TCDC. Different books are regularly put on display so that things never get stale and library goers always find something new and surprising to catch their eye. They are an open invitation to explore new areas of interest. But improvements to the Center don’t stop there. The center is always gathering new knowledge and information to add to i t s g row i n g database. This database can then function as the country’s premier reference resource for anyone interested in the field of design. For

TCDC Resource Center has attracted the attention of educational institutes and other public and private-sector agencies. The center was recognised as the best in the category of “Special Library” in the year 2013 from Thai Library Association under the royal patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It has received several requests for visits and study tours to learn about Information Resource Management and Information Services. Between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2014, of 193 students in library and information science and librarians, both local and overseas, have visited the facilities.
The center continues to offer training courses that provide vocational opportunities for students interested in a career in library and information science. Between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2014, 6 sessions were conducted for a total of 9 students.

One of TCDC Resource Center’s missions is to build a living library, not only to create a good environment, but to inspire our members to think and learn with varied activities. The monthly Visual Project selected quality documentaries and films from around the world to spark creative idea. The Book Recommendation helped members to easily find resources related to TCDC exhibitions and seminars for further learning and research. The Movie Highlight promoted interesting resources via grouping of content, genre, classic work or acclaimed directors.
TCDC has been sponsoring seminars, lectures and symposiums since its inception. For anyone unable to attend, the center now makes available almost all of its seminars via www.youtube.com/user/TCDCThailand. That means that you can listen to TCDC seminars at anytime anywhere. Members can also watch the rerun via iPad at the center.
TCDC Resource Center now has a new design for the stickers on its collection of books and other publications that uses new color codes and a revamped numbering system. The new arrangement is not only more attractive; it makes finding library resources a lot easier. It is also easier to reshelve books and indicate when books have been improperly placed. The center has developed its own software for printing ready-to-use stickers, which is available for free to other libraries and other interested organisations. The program is already in use at the Sripathum University Library, TK Park, the Museum Siam, Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat university, the Ubon Rajathani public library's project on food and farming, and at the library of the National Human Rights Commission. The new software will help to set new standards for libraries throughout the country in the years to come.
“Intelligent bookmarks” are a new service offered by the TCDC Resource Center to its users that helps them remember more easily where they leave off in any book they read. They are an upgrade of the former system whereby TCDC members picked up a bookmark from the librarian on duty. Now the library offers a larger number of these “intelligent bookmarks” at more locations so that it is no longer necessary to contact the counter before taking advantage of the service. All you do is pick up a bookmark, write your membership number, and stick it in a book on the desired page. Later the librarian will send the user an email with the information.

Creative Thailand is a free Thai-language magazine published monthly with a variety of fun, easy-to-read features that showcase ideas and activities related to the “Creative Economy”. It offers analyses and case studies, as well as updates on the latest trends in the global creative business community. There are reviews of new books and design materials, profiles of up-and-coming entrepreneurs representing a range of creative industries, and interviews featuring creative thinkers meant to inspire readers and raise awareness of the importance of “creativity” as the primary driver for the Thai economy in the future.
In fiscal year 2014, TCDC had published 12 issues, 50,000 copies for each issue, 600,000 in total. The magazine is distributed via 250 bookstores, libraries, office buildings and cafes in Bangkok and Vicinity, and 80 locations in Chiang Mai and Hua Hin, as well as 14 miniTCDC countrywide. It is also available online at www.creativethailand.org and via iPad/iPhone. The magazine had been read online 271,363 times and downloaded 11,122 times.
Summarise the upcoming trends based on an analysis of primary data sources by leading trend-forecasting agencies from around the world. The trend books’ abstract concepts were compiled and distilled into a reader-friendly digest along with illustrative case studies and special feature focusing on key concepts, ready for interested public, students and designers to apply.

TCDC makes its design knowledge and product development services available directly to members and the public for the ninth year running. TCDC aims to provide body of knowledge at a regional level and give all citizens the opportunity to access our services. TCDC has co-operated with networks of government and private sectors. TCDC continued the co-operation with regional educational institutions to provide creative and design knowledge countrywide under the miniTCDC project. The purpose was to give easier access to regional students, designers and entrepreneurs as well as to inspire them to develop their businesses to the next level. TCDC in collaboration with Thai Health Promotion Foundation give local college students in miniTCDC network including TCDC Chiang Mai the chance to explore how to develop the ‘Creative City’ with service design to enhance 14 local communities in 14 provinces through creative activities as followed:
• Service Design Training Workshop at TCDC Bangkok including researching and analyzing the local consumers’ complex need in order to appropriately solve communities’ problem and developing into creative communities for the next generation.
• Educational fieldtrip in George Town Festival 2014 in Penang, Malaysia to explore the new experience of world’s notable space management which can be applied to enhance Thai local communities.
Service Design Thailand: Improving the Quality of Life through Innovative Service Design
TCDC carried on with its Service Design Thailand project for the second consecutive year. The purpose of the project is to build on the strengths of Thailand's service sector, which has now grown to account for the largest share of the country's economy. As the service industry seems set to continue to expand, TCDC recognizes the need for activities that boost the potential for creative service design through the application of creative assets and the Thai people's famed service-mindedness. In 2014, TCDC sponsored a number of educational activities to sharpen the creative skills of people working in the business and design communities. The government sector received special attention as TCDC hopes that innovations in service design will raise the standard of state services and improve the quality of life for the Thai public.

This 3-day workshop taught Service Design in both theory and practice, including the tools in Service Design and how to use them, by experts: Marc Stickdorn, co-author of “This is Service Design Thinking”, Markus Edgar Hormeß and Adam St. John Lawrence, co-founders of Work.Play.Experience and “Global Service Jam”. Participants also learnt the techniques to conduct their own workshop in order to share knowledge and experience with others. TCDC also produced a video to spread the service design knowledge and tools taught in this workshop to the public via Youtube.
TCDC's Service Design Co-Creation Projects were held in cooperation with the following organizations: Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), Bumrungrat Hospital and the Hotel Association. The purpose was to implement solutions to problems that grew out of the phase 2 Service Design Workshop: Project-based in order to achieve set goals. Whether it was through improvements to existing services or the introduction of new services, the project focused on service improvement, service innovation and the direct application/use of the design process in the organization.
This activity allowed participants of an earlier Service Design Workshop: Train the Trainer to put into actual practice what they had learned. These organizations were Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), Bumrungrad Hospital and the Hotel Association represented by the Sivatel. The workshop focused on case studies based on real problems encountered by each of the participating groups
TCDC has set up a new online community on Facebook called Service Design Thailand, which provides informal ideas and information on service design and design thinking. The online site is intended to spread awareness of the latest developments in service tools, methods, and processes among not just designers but interested members of the general public.
In this 48 hours event, participants from diverse field of expertise and experiences worked together on the challenges faced by public services. This event offered the opportunity to enjoy the working process as a team and to learn and experience Service Design in action.
The exhibition presented a number of design ideas for public transportation services by TCDC and students from 5 universities: Chulalongkorn University, Silpakorn University, King Mongkut 's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thammasart University and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. It illustrated the awareness that today’s public transport services need to be about more than just a smile. They must create “impressive experiences” for service users at every stage of the journey. While public transportation providers need to build a better image and improve overall performance, they need to do this by adopting a “user-centered” development strategy that puts passengers first. The focus of this exhibition was on high-speed rail.
Promoting Community Creativity through the Power of YouthWith the participation of the Office of the Health Promotion Fund, our network of mini-TCDCs, a project to expand design education opportunities to the provinces outside the capital, organized a series of workshops aimed at introducing young people to the basics of service design. These workshops included lectures as well as hands-on experiences in service design using the tools and concepts presented in the lectures.
The project gave second and third year students in programs related to design, urban development, and creative thinking an opportunity to put their knowledge and skills in the field of service design into actual practice. Students participating in the project came from 14 communities in 14 different provinces, namely Cholburi, Khonkaen, Maha Sarakham, Petchburi, Pisanuloke, Ubol Ratchathani, Songkla, Kampaengphet, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nakorn Sri Thammaraj, Phuket, Nakorn Ratchasima and Nakorn Pathom. Working in 14 teams, the students were asked to build on their creative ideas and come up with long-term projects specifically tailored to meet the needs and conditions of the local communities. The 3 teams with the best ideas were awarded funds with which to turn their ideas into reality.

TCDC in collaboration with KIDP (Korea Institute of Design Promotion) ran a project of sharing and exchanging service design knowledge both in theory and practice which led to strengthen the relation fabric in the future between Thailand and South Korea. The project launched the workshop under the topic “Service Design for Aging Society” by KIDP staffs at Workshop@TCDC on November 9, 2013 with the total participants of 15. The next workshop is under the topic “Thai-Korea Service Design Pilot Project: Design Convergence Workshop” by TCDC and KIDP staffs at Auditorium, TCDC on November 28, 2013 with the total participants of 30.

Calling on partners both in Thailand and abroad, TCDC launched a number of projects aimed at increasing local awareness of the importance of service design in the public transport sector.

The purpose of the project is to improve existing services and develop new services that will draw larger numbers of people to Bangkok's central railway station and ultimately allow the State Railways Authority to turn a profit. An initial study was done to determine the problems that train users currently encounter, and foremost among them was the substandard level of basic services, including information about incoming and outgoing trains, punctuality and convenience. The design teams devised a plan for improving basic services that will be implemented in stages over a period of 3 years. From there, new services will be introduced.

Service design specialists from South Korea introduced an approach to improve Hualampong Railway Station that resulted from research and service design processes to create new service and business model for the first railway station in Thailand.
This research project was collaboration between TCDC, Korean Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP) and Service Design Council under the “Design Sharing Program”.
TCDC Bangkok and Chiang Mai has assembled an impressive collection of books and multimedia resources available to members and other individuals interested in improving their knowledge of design. Membership of the TCDC Resource Center Bangkok and Chiang Mai in fiscal year 2014 totaled 37,876 The total number of visits was 142,742. The library’s holdings, which consist of books, periodicals, multimedia, and databases, totaled over 50,000 items. Library materials were accessed through the website at http://library.tcdc.or.th a total of 43,719 times.
TCDC members and other visitors not only took advantage of TCDC library resources Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but also viewed exhibitions, took part in educational workshops, seminars and lectures as well as Ploy Saeng Festival organised by TCDC over the past years.
