FROM THE PRESIDENT, SANFORD VIEDERA NEW YEAR – NEW
CHALLENGES
FROM RABBI AARON BERGMAN
FROM HAZZAN DANIEL GROSSSELICHOT
Summer has gone by in a blaze ofglory and it’s hard to believe
it’s Septemberalready. The fall season is emblematic ofchange. The
weather slowly turns, the foliageundergoes a beautiful
metamorphosis, students begin a new year of school, and last
but not least, the High Holidays are upon us with the Jewish
NewYear. A dominant theme of the High Holidays is forgiveness. It
issuch an essential aspect of this time of year that there is an
entireservice called “Selichot” devoted to it. Selichot falls on
theSaturday night which precedes Rosh Hashanah. (Note that onyears
like this one when the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls ona Monday
or Tuesday, Selichot is then held on the Saturday nightprior to the
one immediately preceding Rosh Hashanah.) Selichotliterally
translates to “forgivenesses” but the term refers to anyprayers of
repentance. Selichot prayers also focus on God’sbenevolence and
compassion, and include the well-known prayerreferred to as The
Thirteen Attributes (“Adonai, Adonai, El rachumv’chanun…”). The
collective Selichot prayers mirror the contentfound on Yom Kippur.
Therefore, the theme of forgivenessfunctions as bookends of the
High Holiday season.

MESSAGES
As we approach the Yamim Noraim, itrepresents an opportunity for
all of us as Jewsto evaluate what we have endured, accomplished and
lost in the last year, whileperhaps formulating personal plans for
the
coming year. It is always amazing to me how our summer monthsfly
by all too quickly. I hope that all of you had a very
pleasantsummer with great memories and some quality time to relax
withfriends and family. Preparations for the High Holidays at Adat
Shalom are in full gear. Our clergy are hard at work to ensure that
all of our holidayofferings are not only complete but meaningful.
The choirs arerehearsing in preparation, maintenance staff are busy
sparklingthings up and our magnificent synagogue building is
undergoingfinal completion of the new Rosen & Wiener Family
Pavilion inaddition to completion of the final energy efficiency
updates. If you have not recently attended the concluding services
for YomKippur, I hope you will make every effort to return to Adat
Shalomfor that incredibly meaningful service, which offers you
theopportunity to approach the Aron Kodesh with your familymembers
for personal prayers, thoughts and wishes. It is truly oneof the
best religious services of the year. I look forward to greetingall
of you personally over the holidays and certainly at the AronKodesh
during our Ne’ilah service at the conclusion of Yom Kippur! On
behalf of the entire Vieder Family, we wish you a very
happy, healthy and prosperous Jewish New Year ahead.
There is a wonderful thing that usedto be very helpful in
relationships and politics, something that allowed people to speak
toeach without humiliating or insulting theother. That thing, which
appears to be longgone, is a filter.I have never seen people so
unfiltered in
their conversations. Instead of saying, “I don't agree” they
gostraight to hate and anger. Politicians are the worst at this. It
hasbeen a long time since our leaders have encouraged us to
hateother people.Unfortunately, I see this angry and abusive
language in so manyfamily and friend relationships, too. It is
getting so bad that somepeople say that we should not listen to
what a person says, butonly look to what they do.I think this is a
dangerous approach, and one that Jewish traditionhas never
accepted. Words matter. If they didn't, why botherpraying, why say
blessings, why tell our stories? They havepower. A leader's hateful
words can create fear and terror invulnerable populations. A
parent’s words of rejection to a child cancreate a lifetime of pain
and separation. In Jewish tradition, humiliating and denigrating
people isconsidered a form of bloodshed. We are all created in
God'simage. Hateful and racist speech desecrates God's image
andinsults God, no matter who says them.
FROM RABBI RACHEL SHEREFROM LIGHT TO LIGHT
Over the summer, fifty educatorsfrom around the state of
Michigan and theMidwest came to Adat Shalom as part of aprogram
hosted by the Holocaust MemorialCenter. The educators who attended
thisseminar came from communities without
much of a Jewish population. Because Michigan legislation,
since2016, has mandated Holocaust education in all public
schools, these educators were concerned that many of their students’
firstexposure to Judaism would be pictures of tattooed Jews
behindbarbed wire. This seminar, sponsored by The Olga
LengyelInstitute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI), is
builtaround teaching about the Holocaust through the lens
ofeducating about Judaism as a whole. It is important to TOLI
thatthe week of learning both begin and end “with light.” This is
whythe educational seminar began and concluded at Adat Shalom, where
the teachers learned and saw firsthand the way Jewishcommunities
thrived before the Holocaust and continue to thrivetoday. I was
honored to meet with these educators on both visits. Themeetings
with them were informed by an extraordinary memoir Irecently read
by Holocaust survivor and acclaimed psychologistDr. Edith Eger,
entitled The Choice: Embrace the Possible. In thisbestselling
memoir, written at the age of ninety, Dr. Eger says,“We have the
possibility within us to find meaning in suffering andturn it into
an opportunity to discover within us something that wenever thought
was possible. I have no time to hate because if Iwould hate, I
would still be a prisoner. When we seek revenge, even non-violent
revenge, we are revolving, not evolving.”

Preparing for the High Holy DaysSaturday, September 21

Rabbi Jacob E. Segal z”l and Cantor Larry Vieder z”l
identifiedthe synagogue as the home of the Jewish people. Proudly,
AdatShalom is our home. Adat Shalom’s accomplishments reflect, in
large part, yourinvestment in the welfare and growth of that
“home”. As a resultof your generosity in recent years, we have been
able to replacethe chairs in the Social Hall, install
environmentally sound LEDlighting throughout the building,
resurface and replace driveways, parking lots and concrete walkways,
make improvements to thedecorative, acoustical wall paneling in the
Main Sanctuary, andin August we will install a new sound system.
During the courseof our 75th anniversary year, we replaced all the
original heatingand cooling equipment and completed an energy
efficiencyenvelope project to assure significant utility cost
savings. This year, we once again ask you to do a special mitzvah
onbehalf of Adat Shalom. The cost of these necessary
infrastructurereplacements from the original 1972 equipment was in
excess of$1.5 million, which primarily came from our
unrestrictedendowment funds. It is imperative that we regrow the
endowmentfunds to assure ongoing interest growth that will ensure
we havea balanced operating budget each fiscal year. All members
will receive a Yom Kippur Appeal tab card in themail. Please
remember to bring it with you when you come toservices on Yom
Kippur Day, Wednesday, October 9. We stronglyencourage you to be
part of guaranteeing our future by making ameaningful monetary
contribution toward this year’s Yom KippurAppeal. Mahzor Lev Shalem
for Rosh Hashanahand Yom Kippur is available for
purchase in the synagogue office. Thecost is $32 for each
book.
Please contact Denise Gallagher,248.851.5100, ext. 221 or stop

2019-2020 Opening Sisterhood Informational Meeting As they say
in sports, we have made it through our Rookie Year!We now have a
better idea of what it takes to make the Sisterhoodof Adat Shalom
the HEART of our Synagogue. It takes teamwork, membership volunteers
devoting time and effort, hours of planningand implementation, and
financial support. The key component that makes all of this work
isCOMMUNICATION! We are planning four SisterhoodInformational
Meetings, now referred to by the acronym SIM, forthe 2019-2020
calendar year. Our first meeting will be SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2019
at9:30 A.M. at the Synagogue. Bagels and coffee will be served. It
isimperative that Sisterhood members plan to attend. Four major
issues requiring discussion are: ~ Selecting/Volunteering for a
Committee Chairperson Position ~ Selecting a Board of Directors ~
Whether we financially continue our affiliation with Women’s League
For Conservative Judaism ~ Kiddush Funding We need to hear from our
membership! We need you at thismeeting! These are issues which need
to be addressed by all ofus since they affect our role as a
Synagogue affiliate. Please RSVP to Judy Rudy at 248.701.1832 or
[email protected]. We thank each and every one of you for your
support toSisterhood during our 75 years of existence!

When educators incorporate voices such asDr. Eger’s into their
teaching about theHolocaust as a whole, students have
theopportunity to apply what they learn to thechallenges inherent
in today’s world. AsJews, one lesson we are always working toteach
the world is Vayehi erev vayehi boker– After night comes day
(Genesis 1:5). Afterdarkness comes light; we will never allowevil
to have the final word.

Rosh Chodesh Elul falls on August 31 and September 1(whenever
there are 30 days in a Hebrew month, we observe RoshChodesh for two
days). Elul is the 6th Hebrew month, the monththat precedes the
High Holy days. Some say that the Hebrewletters that comprise the
word Elul – aleph, lamed, vav, lamed –are an acronym for “Ani
l’dodi v’dodi li,” a verse from Song of Songsthat means “I am my
beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” Mostoften interpreted as love
poetry between two people, the phrasealso reflects the love between
God and the Jewish people, especially at this season, as we assess
our actions and behaviorsduring the past year and hope for
blessings in the coming year. Several customs during the month of
Elul are designed toremind us of the liturgical season and help us
prepare ourselvesand our souls for the upcoming High Holidays.1.
Blowing the shofarTraditionally, the shofar is blown each morning
(except onShabbat) from the first day of Elul until the day before
RoshHaShanah. The sound is intended to awaken the soul and
kickstart the spiritual accounting that happens throughout the
month. 2. Reading Psalm 27It is customary to read Psalm 27 each day
from the beginning ofElul through Hoshana Rabbah, which is the last
day of Sukkot.3. Visiting loved ones' gravesElul is also a time of
year during which Jews traditionally visit thegraves of loved ones.
This custom not only reminds us of theindividuals on whose
shoulders we now stand and helps us honortheir memories, but also
prompts us to think about our own livesand the legacies we will
leave to others – kind words spoken, comfort offered, love given and
received – which take on addedmeaning as we enter the High Holiday
season. 4. ReflectingIt also is a month during which we are
encouraged to study andtake time for personal reflection around our
actions of the pastyear and to seek forgiveness from those we have
wronged or withwhom we otherwise have “missed the mark” in our
interactionsand behaviors.
This is why most of the sins that are mentioned during the
HighHolidays have to do with the way we use our words. Very few
ofthem are other actions. Our sages understood that the
mostdangerous part of the human body was the tongue, that is whyGod
put it in an enclosure.People will always find things to disagree
on. No matter what issueseems to be the most important today,
something new will emergetomorrow. The question is whether we want
to be able to maintainthe relationships we say we value. We need
leaders whose wordsbring out what is best and most noble within us.
We need to findthe words to make our friends and family feel valued
even whenwe differ. Our words need to bring sweetness to the world,
like the applesand honey of Rosh Hashanah, and not feelings of
discomfort, likethe fast of Yom Kippur.May we create a new year of
sweetness and joy for everyone.
