The evolutionary theory accounts
well for differences in
sleep among creatures. ① Why do cats, for instance, sleep so
much, while horses sleep so little? ② Surely cats can afford to
have long periods of inactivity because they spend little time
eating and are unlikely to be attacked while they sleep. ③ In
contrast, horses must spend almost all their waking hours eating
because what they eat is very low in energy value. ④ They have
evolved from small cat-sized mammals to swift animals closely
linked to human life. ⑤ Moreover, they cannot afford to sleep too
long or too deeply, because their survival depends on their ability
to run away from attackers.
We are Ms. Brown’s twelfth grade
art class. We are
concerned about the future of art classes at our school, so we
hope that you will agree with the points that we raise in our
letter. As you know, school funding has been cut, so that instead
of coming to school every day, Ms. Brown now only comes once a
week. As a result, many art classes have been canceled. Research
studies say that art can help relieve stress as well as help
students achieve higher levels of concentration in all subjects.
The school funding for art classes should be secured. We hope that

water, and swallow it. That was the advice of Francis Galton in a
book ② called The Art of Travel. Bee stings? Well, the tar scraped
out of a tobacco pipe and ③ applied on the skin relieves the pain.
Galton’s book proved a bestseller. It covered every situation, from
constructing boats, huts, and tents in a hurry ④ to catch fish
without a line. It told readers how to find firewood in a rainstorm
(under the roots of a tree) and where ⑤ to put your clothes when
it’s raining so that they don’t get wet (just take them off and sit
on them).

25. We students are not sufficiently provided with opportunities
for learning through trial and error. This is one of the reasons
for my opposition to school uniforms. We do not make mistakes in
choosing what we wear because we do not choose at all. All we have
to do is wear the same uniform every day. Without the school
uniform, we would have to make a choice. And sometimes we would
find our choices incorrect or out of place. We would learn from it.

hurried through San Antonio International Airport. As soon as he
got outside, he climbed into a taxi. When he arrived at his hotel,
he paid the driver who gathered his belongings and went inside. Tom
soon made a startling discovery. In his rush to get to the hotel,
he had misplaced his wallet. Tom immediately contacted the police,
but he was sure he would never see his wallet again. As he stood in
the lobby waiting for an officer to arrive, Tom noticed the taxi

27. One glance at a pyramid can leave the viewer in awe of its
beauty and splendor. Upon closer examination, however, one might be
surprised to discover that such a grand structure is composed
entirely of ordinary stones. An object as grand as a pyramid is not
quickly or easily constructed. Just as the greatness of the city of
Rome is due to the combination of its smaller parts, a pyramid is
only as strong as the stones it is made up of. The image of a
pyramid reminds us that .① great success is an accumulation of

standing very still, holding the Ticket tightly with both hands
while the crowd pushed and shouted all around him. He felt quite
dizzy. There was a peculiar floating sensation coming over him, as
though he were floating up in the air like a balloon. His feet
didn’t seem to be touching the ground at all. He could hear his

A water slide has a very simple construction. The slide, which
is supported by a metal ① frame, is formed from dozens of
fiberglass segments ② fastened together with bolts. Typically, the
individual segments fit together like sections of a toy race track.
Each segment has one end with a raised lip and one end with a ③
sunken step. When you fit two segments together, the lip of one
segment ④ rests on the step of another segment. This ensures that
the segments hold together, with a smooth seam between them.

Our nation is suffering from a
continuously declining birth
rate. Last year, the birth rate per woman registered 1.13, the
lowest among the member countries of OECD. The OECD recommended
four major steps to effectively increase the birth rate-expanding
financial support to parents, job opportunities for women, and
child care facilities and guaranteeing maternity or paternity leave
for workers. Of them, I want to emphasize financial support to
parents through enhanced tax benefits. OECD members provide a great
tax incentive to working couples that have two children. But our
nation provides few tax benefits. It is predicted that the
expansion of tax cuts to parents will increase the birth rate

32. A large number of people
believe what psychics tell them
because they want the information to be true. However, they may
not be aware of the techniques psychics use to get their
“insights.” Most psychics have perfected the ability to read subtle
clues that people give them. They typically start a session by
stating a few facts while carefully observing the client’s
reactions, such as eye movements or changes in facial expression.
Then, they search for information by asking the client questions,
and they get away quickly from any errors they make. They also
count on people’s tendencies to forget the inaccuracies of a
session and to focus on whatever the psychic got right.

33. You can be trapped in do-your-best nonsense. Perhaps there
are some significant cases when you truly want to do your best. But
in the vast majority of activities, having to do your best, or even
having to do well, is an obstacle to doing. Don’t spoil potentially
pleasurable activities because of perfectionism. Try changing “Do
your best” to simply “Do.” If you have perfect standards for
yourself, you won’t do much because perfect is not a concept that
applies to human beings. God can be perfect, but you, as a person,
need not apply such ridiculous standards to your behavior.

feel compelled to add more and more information to new editions of
their textbooks. Publishers have also sought to increase the visual
sophistication of their texts by adding more color and photographs.
At the same time, some instructors find it increasingly difficult
to cover the material in longer textbooks. (B) , longer and more

roses as a gesture of friendship. As the Minister began his speech,
a plane flew low over the audience and dropped the roses, but they

In the Middle Ages, horses were mainly used to carry armored
warriors with shields and weapons. They were considered the “tanks”
of that time. Later, people bred horses for farm work and for
hauling wagons. Clydesdales, referred to as “draft” horses, were
extremely strong horses used for pulling heavy loads. The name
Clydesdale was derived from the Clydesdale area in Scotland where
the breed was developed. They originated in the 1700s when imported
Flemish male horses were bred with Scottish mares. The Industrial
Revolution brought about the decline of Clydesdales as carrying
machines. They hit their lowest number in the 1950s. Clydesdales
have made a comeback as parade horses for special occasions such as
weddings. Their high-stepping walk is eye-catching and a crowd

The above graph shows the per capita economic output in the
years 1900 and 2000. ① On the whole, living standards rose around
the world during the century, but the poorest people were left far
behind. ② The economic output of the poorest twenty-five percent of
the world’s people increased less than three times between 1900 and
2000. ③ The output of the other three quarters, however, increased
about ten times, respectively. ④ In 1900, the richest quarter
produced about five times more than the poorest quarter. ⑤ But they
produced over ten times more in 2000.

38. Every reporter knows
the importance of building
relationships with sources. That’s especially true when dealing
with sources such as the military, who have a deep suspicion of the
press. One excellent way to overcome, or at least minimize, that
distrust is by visiting when you don’t want anything from them.
Marines, for instance, spend lots of time training before they ship
out. That rarely makes a good news story, but they appreciate it if
you show up and watch them conduct exercises. They’ll be more
likely to keep you in mind when it comes time to decide which
reporters to take on real missions.① 객관적인 보도 태도를 견지하라.② 현장에서 직접

39. Today, several credit cards are designed specifically for
high school and even middle school students. With these cards,
children as young as twelve or thirteen can have their very own
accounts, with lines of credit up to $1,000. Many adults say that
this trend will create a generation of overspenders who don’t know
credit is not free. In my view, however, kids having credit cards
is a good thing. These young people will learn how to spend their
money more wisely now and in the future. They need more practice
with managing their money, and credit cards can teach them

41. There is much to be
said for the effect that participating
in music has on your health. You don’t have to play an
instrument to experience the joy and benefits of music. Your own
body is a ready-made instrument. Singing is a good way to start
making music. Jack Thorpe, a collector of cowboy songs, once wrote,
“Singing songs, and making them too, seems as natural to human
beings as washing is to a cat.” Thorpe knew what he was talking
about. Tension is released while singing because the body itself is
used as the instrument. It has also been found that singing helps
with your breathing and digestion. So don’t sing for your supper;

42. Who says that learning has to happen in a classroom? Or take
time away from work? Well, it doesn’t have to. In fact, research
shows you learn more when you apply what you are learning to your
own work. We all have memories of attending classes, sitting
through a lengthy lecture, taking copious notes, and then returning
to work only to put the notes on a bookshelf and never look at them
again. Not only did we waste precious time, but we really didn’t
develop professionally, either. Wouldn’t it be better to

He went to gather up all the family members so that everyone
would get a chance to tell Grandmother good-bye. As my father was
driving down the highway, he saw (a) a soldier in uniform
hitchhiking in the rain. He was drenched to the skin and looked
utterly exhausted from the long wait. Though deep in grief, my
father decided to pick up (b) the hitchhiker. It was almost as if
something outside himself pulled him to a stop.
(B) In 1949, my father had just returned home from the war.
Sadly, the thrill of his reunion with his family was soon
overshadowed. My grandmother became very ill and had to be
hospitalized. It was her kidneys, and the doctor told my poor
father that she needed a blood transfusion immediately or she would
not live through the night. The problem was that Grandmother’s
blood type was AB-, a very rare type even today, but even harder to
get then because there were no blood banks. No one among all the
family members was a match. So (c) the poor veteran left the
hospital in tears.
(C) The soldier noticed my father’s tears right away and
inquired about them. My father told (d) this total stranger that

Person A Flights are
delayed or canceled without explanation. Airline employees are rude
and unresponsive. Passenger luggage is routinely lost or sent to
the wrong destination. And once passengers finally get on board,
the airline serves them as much alcohol as they can buy. Is it any
wonder that the combination of bad service and unlimited drinking
results in the occasional air rage incident? Certainly assaulting a
flight attendant is unacceptable behavior, but the airlines must
admit that they are responsible for creating such an atmosphere of
anger and mistrust among their customers.
* assault: 공격하다
Person B There is no excuse for the sudden, violent outbursts of
anger among airline passengers. More people are flying than ever
before and the airlines are doing the best they can to keep up with
the increased demand for service. Passengers bear responsibility
for their actions. You can’t strike your waiter in a restaurant
because your lunch is delayed. Likewise, it is not acceptable to
assault a flight attendant in the air because your plane is
delayed. Crew members are not responsible for your lost luggage,
delayed flights, bad food or the unpleasant passenger sitting next
to you; it’s time for the public to stop taking their anger out on
them.
