teams update by Sue Hollingworth

The NLG Area 3 Winter Dressage competition is to take place at Bold Heath Equestrian Centre on Saturday 26 November 2011. This year there is to be an extra Prelim class which will be a qualifier for Windsor. If you are interested in being on a team for this event please contact Vicky Hollingworth on 07773 432471 or e-mail [email protected]. [Please note that you need to contact the Teams organisers to notify them of your interest – they cannot ring all ODRC members to find out who is interested.]

As always three stewards will be required to enable us to send teams to this event, so if you would like to volunteer as a steward please contact Vicky Hollingworth on 07773 432471 or e-mail [email protected] . You may be aware that we have had difficulty finding enough stewards for recent team events, so those who wish to be on a team for a particular discipline will be asked to volunteer as a steward for a team event in which they are not competing.

British Eventing – dipping the toe in!! by Sue Hollingworth After weeks of deliberation we (Sue and Vicky Hollingworth) made the decision to enter our first BE event. We chose the BE80T class at Stafford - as had around 150 other people on that day! - (the class was split into 4 sections) and what a brilliant experience we had! Sue finished on her dressage score of 40 in 15th place in her section and Vicky finished on 47 (dressage plus one down in the show jumping) in 21st place, both going clear cross country and under the time as well (first time ever for Sue & Xander!) We definitely made the right decision to start with a BE80T as there are BE trainers on hand in all phases to help and give advice to any competitors if required. There are escorted course walks on both the cross country and the show jumping again by BE trainers. The cross country course was a lovely well-presented, flowing course with a variety of fences (no scary corners). The atmosphere was very friendly - as were fellow competitors. Four of them rushed to help a horse who had got fast in a trailer on the next row to us, and another competitor came to ask if I needed help (as she knew what it was like to be on your own) when Xander was having a hissy fit with me because his favourite friend (Buffy) had abandoned him to go cross country! If any of you want to have a go, I can definitely recommend that doing a BE80T class is a good start. We enjoyed the experience so much we have already booked into our next BE80T – can’t wait - 14th August – Bold Heath.

sponsored ride – please join in if you can by Vicky Smallwood

"Karen's Cause" is a group of family and friends all trying to raise money for Karen Holroyd to enable her to have "cyber knife treatment" which she desperately needs to fight cervical cancer. (They have a website: karenscause.co.uk). Karen has a 10 year old son, Eliot, and lives with her partner Anthony and Anthony's son, Jacob, who is also 10.

There is to be a Family Fun Day on Sunday 11 September 2011 at Greenfield Conservative Club in aid of the cause, and I am organising a Sponsored Ride in fancy dress, starting and finishing at the Conservative Club, travelling

through every Saddleworth village, taking approximately 3½ hours. The ride will be done at a steady pace so as to be suitable for all levels of rider. There will be refreshments for horse and rider upon return and a prize to the best fancy dress of the day.

The entry fee will be £5 plus any sponsorship money you raise, or you can just come along for the ride and enter for £10 on the day. If you would like a sponsorship form, please contact me (Vicky) on 07837 646561 and I will get it posted out to you straightaway. I am currently negotiating with two local businesses regarding parking for horseboxes/trailers and again, if you need parking space please ring me on the above number. The aim of the day is for riders to come along and have fun and raise money for a very good cause.

out & about

UK Showing at Bold Heath – July Several ODRC members participated with considerable success in the UK Showing championships held over two days at Bold Heath Equestrian Centre, having qualified at the ODRC Showing Show. Kim Salmon won the Novice Working Hunter 14-15hh, came 2nd in the Open 14-15hh Working Hunter and was Reserve Champion in the Championship. Tracy Shaw was 3rd in the "Concours d'Elegance" and 6th in the Cob class. Katie Donald won the Riding Club class and Lorraine Worral won the Side Saddle class and was 2nd in the Ridden Coloured class. Deb Connell was 5th in the Open Spotted and Palomino In Hand class. Well done, all of you, both for your own personal achievements and for flying the flag for ODRC!

Shipden Dale RC Rebecca Starling took Fonzy to Shibden Dale RC on 17 July where he won the Working Hunter class, the Ridden Foreign Breeds class and was second in the Riding Horse class. They have now qualified for the National Riding Clubs Championships, the National Showing Championships, Equifest and the Royal London Show. Due to personal commitments Rebecca won't be attending all of them but will be going to the National Riding Clubs Championships and the National Showing Championships. Rebecca was over the moon with Fonzy, even though his behaviour wasn't always exemplary! - he got very, very excited in the Workers! But it was a great result in awful weather, and it made getting soaked through worth it!

Turbury Equisport Show Cross Five ODRC members had a great day out on 31 July. Jennie Lancashire was thrilled with Georgia doing a magnificent clear to clinch 6th place in the Novice class – and this was Jennie's first cross country event! Bridget Tibbot with Brad and Martha Tibbot with Mischief Maker won the pairs with Brad giving Mischief lots of confidence in her first cross country competition. Brad and Mischief went on to perform double clears to secure wins in the Open and Intermediate respectively. Both riders were delighted! Samantha Bentley produced a clear showjumping round and flowing cross country, and was thrilled with Rosie's calm behaviour, to gain fifth place in the cross country. Tim Partridge and Sox produced two brilliant rounds of showjumping especially in the Open which was full 3'6". It's wonderful to see Sox back in action after a successful tie-back operation earlier this year.

Cross Country Clinic by Becky Starling, Clinic Organiser

International Event Rider, Ben Hobday has offered to run a Coss Country clinic for members of ODRC on Monday 15th August 2011 at Smallwood Livery centre in Sandbach, Cheshire. Smallwood is a quality venue offering 45 acres of undulating grassland with a professionally designed course including ditches banks, drops, accuracy fences including corners and pimples, all constructed to the highest standard. Obstacles range from just 18 inches high to 3' 6" with a range of technicalities to suit every level of horse and rider.

Ben won the Under 21s National Eventing Championships, and went on to win team Gold and individual Bronze medals in 2008 competing against Europe's best young riders and was recently 3rd in the under 25s section at Bramham Horse Trials on his advanced horse, Uptons Who. ODRC members very much enjoyed the Showjumping clinic run by Ben in May this year and found his teaching very helpful.

Lessons are £30 per person for an hour's group lesson (3 or max 4 per group) or £30 per 45 minutes for a private/pairs lesson. Pairs are recommended in order to give horse and rider a little break in between jumping. 45 minutes XC on your own would be quite intense! Please note there is also a £15 charge per person for the hire of the venue, so the total cost of a lesson will be £45. Please make cheques payable to O&DRC and post along with the entry form below to Rebecca Starling, Sherbrooke Hall Farm, High Stile Lane, Uppermill OL3 5JR.

Show Preparation Demonstration – New Date Following the winter series of articles by Halia Williams giving us pointers on showing, a number of members have expressed interest in a "hands-on" clinic of how to plait up, trim, and all aspects of show turnout. The original date of 22 June had to be postponed because of injury but a new date of Wednesday 24 August has been arranged at Lesley Illingworth's, Crown Point Farm, Quick Edge Rd. Lydgate. Halia will demonstrate the techniques on one of Lesley's horses on the night. The cost will be £10 per person. If you are interested in attending please ring Krystina Bamber on 07970 813193.

7 August Jill Bradley Memorial Mini One Day Event. It would be great if this show could be as well supported as last year. Jill, who was an active ODRC member and great encourager of riders at all levels, died in May 2010 from duodenal cancer, and is sadly missed. This show is being run annually so she might never be forgotten.

14 August Beach Ride, meet at 1pm on Lifeboat Road, Formby weather & tide permiting. Bring your own picnic for afterwards. This is an informal outing – just turn up and join in with any other riders who have arrived for a fun ride.

20 August Family Horse Show – Friezland User Group fundraising show run by our very own Vicky Tibbot. A really friendly, fun day for all the family to join in.

NEW HORSE ~- found by Cathy Heaven

As those of you who follow Facebook will know … I am now happy to say I am the new owner of Roo (see photo left).

Finding a new horse is never an easy task … you start out all excited, slightly nervous and full of energy … but after a few weeks and then months of trawling the internet, phoning people who you then discover had sold the horse weeks ago, talking to others who are clearly deluded if they think their horse is a safe ride, or simply never getting hold of the owners of the horse that looks perfect … your enthusiasm does start to wane somewhat.

I am very lucky though because people in Riding Club have been brilliant … helping me trawl the internet – a special thank you to Ann Thompson -

chasing down leads, and generally letting me know of anything seen or heard of that might suit me. Others have been great in letting me ride, and helping me get my confidence back so that when “Mr horsey perfect” came along I was capable of giving him or her a full test run. I have to say a HUGE “thank you” to all.

My new “best friend” … Roo or Rubin … will be known to many of you. Having looked far and wide, he was sitting on my doorstep, waiting for me to remember that Heidi Newton was selling him. At the time of writing Roo has now been with me for 2 weeks … yes, we have had our teething problems, as with all moves, but he is settling fast and I hope we will soon be out and about …. and, dare I say it, at Camp next year?!?

(Ed: Very much hope we see you at Camp 2012! Best of luck, Cathy)

ellie's son takes over the reins by Amanda Godwin

It has been a very difficult time recently as we sadly lost Ellie, our precious mare last month to renal failure - we will always miss her and were very privileged to have known and owned her. She was pure joy in our lives. She was such a very special lady in the true sense of the word, who touched the hearts of all who knew her. We would like to extend our gratitude to Pat & Carol and all the staff at Croft End Equestrian Centre who loved and cared for her so very well. We know they miss her too. We would also like to thank all those at ODRC who sent us their kind words. We are now very lucky to own her son, Caviar, who is settling in well at Croft End and is a super chap, very much his mother's son. Lauren (Rothwell) is very much looking forward to the future with him! Lauren had no idea of his arrival and was overjoyed and very emotional at the surprise and to have a part of Ellie again. She has had success with her other ride, George, as they made their first tentative trips out together this month (July) dipping his hooves in the water at Showing for the first time and have already qualified for Horseparade, PUK, and even came away with a Reserve Champion sash !! It's going to be a busy, happy season - fingers crossed !

Show Jumping show - 17 July 2011 by Vicky Hollingworth

Starting setting up in the rain, we were impressed by the huge number of helpers (quite a novelty and very welcome) to help set up the course, doing our best to keep to the good ground (which there was a lot of) and avoiding the puddles.

Our thanks go to: Hayley Baker, Cath Calvert, Sharon Hardisty, Paula Massey, Arthur Prowse, Debs Prowse, Jade Taylor, Minda Wigley, Bridget Tibbot, Jane Stringer, Denzil Edwards, Steve Hopkinson, Lesley Illingworth, Sue Hollingworth, Jake Hepworth, Sarah Booth, Natalie Shannon, Claire Richardson, Rachel Roebuck, Keith Chappell, Kyle Smith (a definite big thank you goes to Kyle who brought the works van down to use for booking in which freed up the newly fixed tent to be used for shelter). It was also very much appreciated that the Paramedic helped put away too!

There was a steady flow of competitors during the day proving that not all our members are fair weather riders!** The courses were well set up with the odd challenging fence which tested the riders but everyone enjoyed themselves and praised the courses.

The rain unfortunately started to affect the ground after lunch so the decision was made to cancel the last two classes and the field was cleared in record time by our magnificent helpers.

A good day was had by all in spite of the rain, and I would like to thank all the helpers, without whom I wouldn’t have coped. [**Ed: The ODRC Committee is aware that comments were posted on Facebook that the Showjumping Show should have been cancelled because of the weather. This caused some offence to the Show Organisers who had assessed the ground conditions with great care to minimise risk to the competitors and to minimise damage to the field. As soon as the ground conditions began to deteriorate the Show was terminated.]
