1.0 INTRODUCTION

Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMCL), a Government of Odisha undertaking has engaged M/s

Ecological Development Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. (EDCPL), Bhubaneswar, Odisha for carrying out

Environmental Monitoring for their different mine leases in the district of Jajpur, Keonjhar and

Sundergarh.

Environmental Monitoring includes monitoring of various environmental attributes such as Ambient

Air Quality, Work Zone Air Quality, Noise Level, Water Quality, Waste Water Quality, Vehicular

Emission and Soil Quality. Apart from these, various other activities such as suggestions to control the

pollution, conducting various kinds of audits are also a part of this programme.

2.0 MONITORING DESCRIPTION

In order to assess the pollution level in and around the mining lease, different environmental attributes

such as meteorology, air quality, water quality, soil quality and noise level are being monitored. The

monitoring is carried out as per the CPCB guideline and every care has been taken for preservation and

transportation of samples to the respective laboratory. M/s EDCPL has set up a site laboratory equipped

with adequate instruments and equipments to monitor and analyze all the parameters of Air Quality i.e.

PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NOX&CO and few physic-chemical parameters ( 10 parameters) of water samples.

For other parameters of water& Soil, the samples are sent to EDCPL’s Main Laboratory at

Bhubaneswar. The locations of monitoring stations are shown in Plate I & II.

2.1 Meteorology

An Automatic Weather Monitoring Station is installed at the rooftop of OMC office (21002’1.09” N;

85048’8.46”E) to collect the meteorological data on hourly basis continuously.

The parameters monitored at the meteorological station were Temperature, Relative Humidity, Wind

Speed, Wind Direction and Rainfall. These parameters were recorded at weather monitoring station

using the respective sensors.

2.2 Ambient Air Quality

The prime objective of the ambient air quality study is to establish the existing ambient air quality in

and around the mining lease area. The existing ambient air quality was monitored at six (6) locations.

The locations were identified after due consultation of the OMCL officials. Monitoring was carried out for

Particulate Matter (PM10), Particulate Matter (PM2.5), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX)

and Carbon Monoxide (CO). The PM10 &PM2.5 was monitored for 24 hourly, while SO2 and NOxwere

monitored on 4 hourly basis for 24 hours at each sampling location and CO was monitored using the CO

Monitor for 1 hr in a day in each monitoring station twice in a week, for a month. Details about Air Quality

Monitoring locations are given in Table No. 2.1.

To assess the level of fugitive dust due to mining and allied activities, six (6) monitoring stations were

selected within the lease considering the activity area. Fugitive emissions monitoring was carried out

once in a month on 8 hrly basis. The list of fugitive emissions monitoring stations is given in Table No.

3.0 METHODOLGY 3.1 Meteorology

The meteorological parameters were monitored on hourly basis continuously by installing a weather monitoring system at the rooftop of OMC office of M/s OMCL.

3.2 Air Monitoring

Monitoring was carried out for Particulate Matter (PM2.5), Particulate Matter (PM10), Sulphur Dioxide

(SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) and Carbon Monoxide (CO). The PM10 &PM2.5 was monitored for 24 hourly,

while SO2 and NOX were monitored on 4 hourly basis for 24 hours at each sampling location and CO was

monitored using the CO Monitor for 1 hr in a day in each monitoring station twice in a week, for a month. The

sampling and analysis of ambient air quality was carried out as per the approved procedures by CPCB.

3.3 Noise Monitoring

The monitoring of noise level was carried out at specified locations. Ambient Noise levels were recorded at

hourly intervals for 24 hours. And in case of Work zone, noise monitoring was carried out at hourly intervals

for 08 hours.

3.4 Surface Water Monitoring

For assessing the water quality, surface water samples were collected. Eight (8) water samples from four

locations (04) were taken in sterilized plastic cans twice a month. The samples were analyzed for essential

physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters as per the list enclosed in the work order. The samples

were analyzed as per standard procedure / method mentioned by CPCB/APHA.

3.7 Flow of Water Measurement

The monitoring of flow of water was carried out monthly once of the springs and perennial analyses present

within and adjoining the mining lease area. The flow of water measurement was carried out at 4 specific

locations (04) and is expressed in m3/min.

3.8 ETP Water Analysis

The Effluent treatment Plant Water Analysis Was Carried out at South kaliapani and Water Samples were

collected from the D-Quarry and F-quarry and the samples were analyzed for Hexavalent Chromium (Cr+6)

as per the guideline mentioned by CPCB.
