For those of you who prefer sunlight and human interaction over living in your parents’ basement dreaming of being a video game tester, the DK2 is the latest iteration of a revolutionary new virtual reality technology primarily used for gaming. I can forgive anyone for wondering what an oncology advertising agency would be doing with a virtual reality headset because many people asked the same thing of Facebook when Mark Zuckerberg acquired the technology for 2 billion dollars. To answer the question of what Facebook would do with the technology, Zuckerberg stated, “Imagine... consulting with a doctor face-to-face—just by putting on goggles in your home.” Interestingly, it would seem that Zuckerberg’s imagined reality is now coming to fruition. The Moveo Foundation relevantly released a promotional video of the world’s first Oculus Rift surgery for the purpose of training new surgeons. This surgery features a French orthopedic surgeon filming a total hip replacement with 3-D cameras attached to his head.
