From The Rabbi's DeskI want to make an announcement about a wonderful learning opportunity for ourcommunity. Over the next several months I will be teaching a series called “Walking with God”. The Walking with God series is an adult education course comprising of 12 units and was created by the Ziegler School of Rabbinics’ at the American Jewish University. This is a powerful course dealing with a subject many of us have neverseriously studied. We will learn from experts and from classic Jewish texts. You donot need to know Hebrew for this course and each class is a separate class, so ifyou miss a class you will be able to continue to participate. The amazing news isthat this class will be offered twice a week, once on Thursday evening at 7:30 PMafter Minyan and again on the following Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Classes will begin onThursday October 15 and will be repeated on Tuesday October 20, 2009.

This course will require 20 minutes of pre-class reading. The essays will be providedonline or in the Temple office. Each essay is written by an expert in his/her field. We will explore God in the Bible, Talmud, Midrash, Halakhah, Kabbalah, Hassidutand Modern Jewish Thought. These classes are not lectures but opportunities foreach of us to explore our tradition’s understanding of God. My past experience with this series has been wonderful and congregants have enjoyed the wonderful discus-sions.

Please contact me by phone or e-mail if you have any questions:[email protected]

Our tradition teaches that Talmud Torah has no prescribed measure, that it yieldsbenefit both immediately and in the time to come. It is our earnest hope that theWalking With project will awaken a passion for learning and provide a stimulatingand positive educational experience in the short term. We pray, also, that in thelonger term it will help to strengthen our people's connection to God and to a life ofspirit and mitzvoth. I hope that you all will take the time to join me for this seriesor for as many classes as you can over the next few months.

B’Shalom,

Rabbi Arye Berk

TELEM

Jewish teens in the greater Boston area are coming together to make meaningful community service part of their lives. Students at TempleBeth Emunah participate in this program by spending a few hours a week to improve someone else's life, and have a positive impact in thecommunity as part of a millennia-old tradition of tikkun olam—repairing the world. TELEM means "moving together" in Hebrew. It's alsoan acronym in Hebrew for tenuah tz'i'rim mitnadvim, Movement for Youth Volunteers! TELEM is about making a difference.

It's an innovative service learning program that integrates community service, learning, and reflection—and provides opportunities to effectreal change. In addition to helping others, students learn about values that have guided Jews for thousands of years—and gain understandingof how to work for change. TELEM is about building relationships: people helping people, through six varied service tracks, ConnectingGenerations, formerly Eldercare, Special Needs, Hunger and Homelessness, Literacy, Organizing, and Advocacy.

Temple Beth Emunah students participate in B’nai TELEM in 7th grade, sampling all six volunteer tracks in classroom lessons and one-timeservice projects. They then graduate to the TELEM program, participating in the recently added Special Needs track at the South Shore Spe-cial Needs Collaborative at Temple Beth Emunah, Hunger and Homelessness at the Evelyn House in Stoughton, or Eldercare track atHeight’s Crossing Assisted Living Residence.

To join this fantastic program at Temple Beth Emunah, contact the religious school staff for more information. To learn more aboutTELEM, please visit our website at www.telemyouth.org.
