Jencie McRobert and Russell Pretty returned to their family farm to establish Dead Horse Hill vineyard in 1994, which is named in remembrance of the burial ground for the working horses of the Toolleen district.

In the vineyard Jencie practices minimalist viticulture, producing very low yields of intensely flavoured fruit. Located 20km north of the Heathcote township, Dead Horse Hill wines continue to reflect the characteristic richness and depth of the Heathcote region.

Founded in 1846, Devaux’s headquarters are in Bar-sur-Seine, in the Aube region of Champagne, an area known for the excellence of its Pinot Noir grapes, a variety that characterises each Devaux Cuvée.

Winemaker Michel Parisot, who has worked at Devaux for many years, uses only juice from the first pressing - the most concentrated - and ages the Champagne on lees for at least three years for a non-vintage and five years for vintage, before disgorgement and release.

The Old Faithful Wine Company is an artisan producer of small quantities of exceptional wines from older, exceptional single vineyards. We look for vineyards that are expressive of McLaren Vale, the vintage and the variety and only release our wines when they display the finest characters. With Rhone as its inspiration - Shiraz, Grenache and sometimes Mourvedre grace our portfolio. Made to age gracefully, we believe in and recommend our wines and hope you can enjoy the magic of ‘The Old Faithful’.

Rebecca and Lucy Willson became the first sister winemaking team to run a winery in Australia after taking over Bremerton from their parents in 2004. They have given the Langhorne Creek based winery a strong foothold in the Australian premium wine market with a strong focus on quality and consistency. They have been a James Halliday FIVE STAR WINERY for seven years. Robert Parker Junior claimed Rebecca to be ‘..one of Australia’s finest female winemakers..’

Diamond Valley was established in 1976 by the Lance family in Melbourne’s beautiful Yarra Valley wine region. The aim and philosophy was simple – to grow the finest grapes possible, of excellent varietal character, and to handcraft these grapes into elegant and distinctive wines of the highest quality. Carefully selected sites give warm growing conditions in a cool climate. Low grape yields and a carefully managed canopy complete the parameters for growing the finest grapes and to ensure the highest quality.

Made by Ben Riggs in collaboration with Peter Flewellyn, from a single vineyard estate planted on soils derived from the 500 million year old Cambrian rock that underlies the entire estate, Tatiarra is the product of synergy between winemaker, viticulturalist and terroir. Strict viticulture management is practiced at Tatiarra Vineyard in order to maximise the relationship between vines, soil and climate. Yields are typically low, around two and one half tonnes per acre. The resulting wines are perfectly balanced and possess tremendous exuberance.

Early historical records from the Yarra Valley indicate that the famous Frog family moved into the original Yering Station winery building back in 1859. The property’s first ‘Mr Frog’ knew the cool, fresh environment, smell of grape skins and the constant access to some of Victoria’s finest wines, made this the best address a 19th century amphibian could have.

Today, legend has it that the fifth generation of the venerated Frog family still lives within the cooler crevices of the historical building, now home to cellar door.

Three Hills by HappsMargaret River, Western Australia

Available in: ACT NSW QLD SA VIC TAS WA

The Three Hills Estate is located close to Cape Leeuwin where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern. Here, the unique attributes that relate to excellence in Margaret River, are very well expressed. The climate is humid and cool. The soil never sees herbicides and is never ploughed. The fruit ripens in late Autumn conserving flavour and is hand pruned the old fashioned way because it works. Thee Hills is truly a vine garden and are a result of careful selection - they are from the best grapes from the best slopes in the best years at Three Hills estate.

Wine Companion 2013

Arriving in 1967, Irishman Dr John Lagan was inspired by the pioneering spirit seen throughout the Margaret River. He first planted vines in 1977, and inspired by the similarities between the environment of the vineyard site and the words of Coleridge’s poem ‘Kubla Khan’, Lagan named the property Xanadu.

Now owned by the Rathbone family, the original vineyards continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment: rich, free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. The current winemaking focus mirrors the vision of Lagan - to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region.

John Brocksopp has been an advocate of marsanne, roussanne, viognier and mataro (mourvèdre) as commercial varieties since his early days at Seppelts (circa 1967). It is only on his ‘retirement’ from a long-serving viticulture career, most recently with Leeuwin Estate, that he has been able to concentrate on further developing his passion with the southern French varieties planted on his 3 hectare property. The results of this life-long fascination speak for themselves: limited quantities of hand-made, highly regarded, European-styled wines presented under the boutique Lillan label.

Returning to Marlborough permanently in 1996, Brian Bicknell identified that individual sites within the region produced quite different styles of wine. At a time when Marlborough was considered to be producing regionally blended wines, hiding the diversity of the region, Mahi was born.
