Hello lovely Key Clubbers!

WELCOME to Key Club! My name is Kaila Mattera and I am so pleased and honored that I have the

pleasure of serving all of you as your 2013-2014 Key Club president. Throughout the year, I hope I will

get to know all of you better and that we may all get to know one another as we bond through

service to our community. Ever since I was a freshman, my Key Club experience has been an

unbelievable journey and something that I will never forget, and I hope that this year the board and I

can make it so that you may have your own equally amazing Key Club experience.

Improvement is always the goal from year to year and I have set a few goals to allow our club to

improve and grow this year: Raise $300 for Pediatric Trauma Program, complete 2000+ service hours,

retain at least 55% member attendance at weekly meetings, receive two awards at District

Convention 2014, and place in the top 3 clubs within the division. Our club is already strong, and I

know that together we can definitely reach these goals, surpass them, and become stronger because

of them. I just know this is going to be a GOLDEN year!

Have a FANTASTIC school year Narwhals! I look forward to meeting you and seeing you on Fridays at

Rancho Simi Recreation Park

District

RSRPD hosts various programs and activities at parks in

Simi Valley and Oak Park. With the amount of activities

they put together, they rely greatly on volunteers to help

them. Volunteers can help by setting up for events,

helping out at the events, or cleaning up after events. No

volunteer experience is required to sign up, so I highly

recommend people who are new to volunteering to start

here! There are a wide range of events volunteers can

work at and the atmosphere is great!

Simi Valley Library

Today I was a volunteer for the first time at the Simi Valley

Library. The whole experience was pretty neat, and you

find yourself reminiscing on all the great books you read,

for all the work done was in the Children's Area. I was

working with my sister, Justine, and one of Key Club's new

editions, Lauren DeMent. It was a great experience, and I

am looking forward to helping out in the library any way I

can, once a week. Having your friends around adds to

the fun, and if you are a committed volunteer, you will be

gaining some valuable job experience. To say the least, it

was a nice first for me. I am hoping that more of us Key

Clubbers will reach out and volunteer at the Simi Library,

now that they are practically new, and re-opened.

Past Events

Stillwaters Café

The Stillwaters Cafe is a ministry of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church of Simi Valley located

on Cochran Street. Every Thursday between 5 and 7 p.m., the Stillwaters Cafe provides a hot,

wholesome home-cooked meal for members of our community who are in need and are less

fortunate or for anyone who wants a meal served in a friendly family environment. In addition to

providing a meal, the Stillwaters Cafe has a food pantry stocked with items available to those who

need help in providing food for themselves and their family. I enjoy going to Stillwaters Cafe every

week because I enjoy the thanks I'm given for what I do. Many people come in and really

appreciate all of the work that is done for them. After seeing the joy on the people's faces after

my first time volunteering there, I was overjoyed at the thanks I was given and wanted to come

back next week and help out some more. After months of volunteering there and getting to know

the people that put Stillwaters on, along with the many people that come in for a meal, I decided

to become the Key Club Chair for it because it's something I truly enjoyed doing. Now, I have 2-4

volunteers organized with me that come every single week that feel as compassionate as I do

when it comes to helping out there.

Kiwanis Car Show

On September 22, 2013, I along with two other Key Club members volunteered to help set up for

the Kiwanis annual car show. We helped to direct the cars to their parking space and also set up

some signs promoting the event. The cars that were entered into the show were amazing! These

cars were judged for a prize later on during the day. Next year I hope that I can stay to see the

actual car show as the cars there were so cool. Setting up for this event was enjoyable because

the Kiwanis members were so nice and appreciative of our volunteer efforts! Volunteering for the

Kiwanis Car Show was a terrific experience!

First Key Club Meeting

The Santa Susana Key Club had our first meeting of the school year on September 6th. Many old

members returned and we also saw many new faces. All of the officers introduced themselves and

various opportunities for volunteer work were offered. Everyone was extremely enthusiastic about all

that Key Club has to offer. I can tell that this will be a terrific year and I cannot wait for the

memorable experiences to come!

First “Official” Key Club Meeting: September 27th

Fun Mud Run: Kids + Mud + Bubbles = Fun!!!

On September 28, 2013, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club’s first annual Fun Mud

Run at North Madera Rd. just north of the 118 Freeway. I helped during set up and at

the kids’ course that was run by Platinum Gymnastics. Before the event began, I

helped lay out tablecloths, food, and water for the people participating in the 5K run.

At the kids’ course, I helped blow up beach balls. The kids’ course consisted of running

through tires, climbing over hay stacks, and running through a pit full of water. After

each race, there would be a tug of war between the boys and girls over the water pit.

Once the kid races began, I helped blow bubbles around the course, pass out medals

to the children after they completed the race, play with beach balls with the kids, and

take pictures of the event. During the entire process, everyone got muddy and had a

great time! It was great to serve with four other Narwhals from our club and to

encourage kids to be active. The project was successful because the children got a

chance to be active as their parents ran in the 5K race. The people in charge of

Platinum Gymnastics were very helpful and fun to be around. Everyone was energetic,

and I hope we can have more members volunteer at the Fun Mud Run next year!

Ongoing Events

Pop Tabs

Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles)

We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless

Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. o Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm o The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month

Our KEY Family: September DCM

The September Division Council Meeting was held on September 29th at the Rancho Madera

Community Park. First we played some icebreakers which were followed by the meeting

where we learned all about schools in our division. We were also served ice cream! Then

everyone made letters for the troops. After that, members paid one dollar to pie another

member in the face. All of the money will be donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program. This

DCM was truly memorable because the activities we did will make a difference in other

peoples’ lives. It was also nice to see freshmen who just joined Key Club at the DCM. I cannot

wait to see what fun activities will be at the next Division Council Meeting!

Siena Mattera Hi my name is Siena Mattera and I am the Co-Spirit chair. I am a soon to be

sophomore, I joined Key Club not knowing how fun and awesome it could be.

One of my goals this year is to have more people wear their shirts on Friday.

Some things I enjoy doing include dancing my heart out and making delicious

cupcakes!

Dana Brough Hello Santa Susana Narwhals! My name is Dana Brough, and I am so excited to be

your Kiwanis Family Relation Chair Officer. I joined Key Club when I was a Freshman,

and I absolutely fell in love with the organization. Joining Key Club allowed me to

meet new friends and become introduced to our wonderful Kiwanis advisors. I feel

like I can make a difference in my community whenever I serve with my fellow

Narwhals. I am so glad I have the chance to be an officer this year as a Sophomore

and can help serve the members of our amazing club. Key Club is such a spirited

and fun-loving club, and I am so proud to be a part of it! We hold the key to success,

leadership, and greatness.
