It’s been awesome to have those extra hours of daylight in the day to get a few extra workouts in or chores done around the house. A bit tough in that first week with the early wake ups but you soon get used to that. The school holi- days have been super busy poolside, with families coming from near and far to get their aquatic fix. I’d just like to give our lifeguarding team a big ups for the great work they do poolside keeping everyone safe in the water. Awesome!! Manu is a young kid from the little coastal town of Matapouri. From a young age he has followed in his big brother, Patxi’s foot-steps travelling around the country compet-ing in the NZ Junior Surfing Series. This is an arduous task for parents who clock up countless miles on the speedo and hours of time at beaches in all sorts of weather. This early immersion into the competitve scene set a platform for Manu to flourish and develop into a household name on the NZ competitive surfing scene. What Munza (as he’s known by his mates) lacks in stature he makes up for in determination and com-petitive savy that has seen him become a dominant force in the NZ U12’s and U14’s age groups. Manu has been training at the gym under Personal Trainer and NZ Junior Surfing Coach Jason Ruddell for the past 2 years and credits this conditioning work as an important aspect of his competitive prep-eration. Manu recently claimed his maiden National Scholastic Championship in the Under 14 age group at the 2012 Surfing

NZ event held in Taranaki. Heading into the event as the number one seed, Manu made easy work of his opponents in the early rounds and headed into the final as the hot favourite. Manu scored an 8.5 out of a pos-sible 10 on his opening ride, and backed it up shortly after with a 5.87 taking the lead. In the dying minutes of the final Manu had to keep close tabs on his rivals and held the lead when the final buzzer went. This was Manu’s second national title in 2012 adding to his 2012 Surfing New Zealand Under 14 title which he won in Piha in January.

How long have you been surfing for? I have been surfing for around 7 to 8 years. What got you into the sport? Well just living right by the beach really, there’s not much else to do but surf. Goals for this season? my goal for the sea-son was to win the national scholastic comp and I did, so pretty happy with that. Goals for the future? to make it into the final NZ world junior team and to win the under 16s at the nationals.Describe your ideal surf session? pumping,

no wind, barreling waves with all the boys out at Sandys!Explain how you ready yourself for a competition and specifically for a heat? well, I just always make sure I have all my gear ready like spare board with spare fins and leggie and listen to music and do stearch’s,.You’ve been training with Jason for a couple of years now, How do you feel that has helped you? It’s helped heaps with my core strength so I can recover a lot easier from layback kind of moves and also with my fitness and paddling What kind of training do you do for surfing? I do a lot of core and legs stuff which helps heaps and swimming. What do you enjoy about the facility and the relationship you have with CLM? Its really good because I can just go to the gym and the pool when ever I want and have a work-out and get my fitness up. It helps heaps.Who are your inspirations? Well I have a couple, Paco Divers because I’ve grown up watching him surf and he rips so hard and I guess my brother Patxi haha.

Nutrition - Berries

CLM Hall of Fame - Manu Scott-Arieata

Besides being delicious, berries are healthful. Berries are brimming with an overwhelming number of beneficial compounds, such as an-thocyanins, catechins, quercetin, ellagic acid and pterostilbene, a relative of the powerful antioxi-dant resveratrol found in grapes and red wine. These naturally oc-curring substances help neutral-ize free radicals—unstable oxy-gen molecules that damage body cells in ways that lead to disease and aging. The numerous phyto-chemicals present in berries also offer further health benefits with preventive, protective and other functional properties. In fact, blue-berries, blackberries, cranberries, strawberries and raspberries pos-sess some of the highest antioxi-dant capacities among fresh fruits. Fresh berries are best enjoyed right away or, at the very least, within a day or two of purchase. Unwashed berries will keep for up to five days in the refrigerator when stored in a colander or breathable snap-and-seal-type bag. (Strawberries are best stored with their hulls intact.) Do not rinse berries until you are ready to use them.

What’s on @ the WAC

Wow what intestity this group has given us! We have been able to create riverting new activities for the group. We continue to have good variety, this time the group ran three times up the stairs of the Parahaka track starting at Dundas road. We have used our own wheels doing laps of the BMX track. Hayley, our Bootcamp instructor was away in LA for 10 days, so we had Dave who enjoyed getting up the ex-tra mornings nice and early. Thanks Dave. Our next group has just kicked off this week, with a lot of people returning for their second term of the bootcamp programme.

Our new W8 loss solution kicked off on the 23rd of October. Every Tuesday over 8 weeks we will meet at 5.30pm at the Wave Café. Check out the new posters that have our term layed out.The previous weight loss solutions group lost over 80kg combined. With Mel Kemp who took out the title losing 16.2% body weight. Outstanding work Mel. We have some great participants in this group so we are really looking forward to their own individual results coming through. If you are still considering being part of it, now is not too late, we would love to see you. Especially now right before summer to get your mindset back on track. This time Caroline Bon is taking the keen weight loss solutions participants through a variety of group circuit workouts at a small cost to participants every Wednesday at 5.45pm.

Stealth classes have been steadily grow-ing in popularity. It must have something to do with summer being right around the corner and people wanting to work on that beach body. Caroline has been selling out her classes on Monday and Thursday evenings, so book in fast to ensure your spot. Hayley Cassidy is back from LA and has picked up her Wednesday morning class at 6.15am.Its an awesome class and you can do it at your own intensity. You adjust the re-sistance based on how you feel. If you’re interested simply book in at reception and bring a radio receiver, drink bottle and towel as we guarantee you’ll sweat.

You would have noticed the return of the bubbly little dynamo that is Lauren Johnson. Lauren re-joins the team as acting team leader in Joey’s absence. Lauren pre-viously worked at the facility in a number of departments. After a brief hiatus milking cows and working in another CLM facil-ity as an instructor and personal trainer Lauren is back. Here’s a few words from the girl herself. Fixed term Fitness Co ordina-tor in the gym covering for Joey while he’s

away with his Cricket commitments. I had previously been in this very same gym from 2009-2011 and am glad to be back on board. I’m looking at increasing the membership numbers and bringing more group fitness classes to this facility. I have been fortunate enough to have worked in another CLM centre and have stolen a few good ideas that are a work in progress.

I have been training regularly in the gym working mainly on getting stronger. I did have a goal of reaching 20 years in my se-

lected sport of surf lifesaving but it’s look-ing rather slim due to a foot injury that now requires surgery. Since living in Auckland, and having been involved in surf lifesav-ing, I fell into a coaching role with 4 young boys. They showed strong talent and I was lucky enough to take them to Nationals in Gisborne earlier this year. They placed 1st in the under 16 boys running relay and one of the boys received an individual silver medal in the beach flags.

I have now taken up waka ama paddling on a social basis and looking into going competitive. I find being on the water really relaxing and enjoy any sort of cross training even if waka ama helps me out with surf lifesaving for the future.

I look forward to seeing all the new and old faces in the gym.
