others appear older than their actual age. It’s notjust deciding to go grey, but how to do it to ensure you always look your best. Look in a mirror at your skin tone. If it is ‘cool’, in that pinks, blues and white suit you – you can rest assuredthat white hair will turn you into a silver siren. Ifyou look good in orange, brown or green, colouryour hair to look younger for longer.
Work out a plan with your hairdresser – be sureto see them regularly to monitor how the greying process is unfolding, they may suggestadding lowlights and/or glosses for definition andshine. Ensure your hair is regularly trimmed andwell cut, keep it well conditioned and use themost appropriate products for maintaining yourgrey hair.
Just one note of caution though, if you maintainflame red locks into your seventies, you could findyourself fully-booked for Halloween or Macbeth!
he need to turn on the heating signifies thearrival of the season of mists and mellow
fruitfulness. Just as summer inevitably gives wayto autumn, sooner or later, we all go grey.
Some of us accept and embrace it, whilst othersview going grey as something to dye for. Insteadof screaming "old", these days grey is becomingtrendier, sexy even. Grey glamour puss DameHelen Mirren is a wonderful role model and formen, George Clooney has to be the ultimate sil-ver fox.
To be factual, grey isn’t really a colour at all. Haircolour pigments range from shades of white, red, brown and black and this pigment comes frommelanin (located in hair follicles). As the humanbody produces less melanin with age, then hairbecomes grey as you grow older.
I am often asked, why do some people turn greyearlier than others? There are two answers. Firstly, heredity – it’s in your genes and there is nothingyou can do to change it. The second is stress andlife situations. Parents who blame their teenagedchildren for premature grey hairs actually have apoint. Stress hormones can interfere with haircells, making it hard for the pigments which maintain the original hair colour to survive. Some people look stunning with grey hair, while

Money Matters
Investing InInflationary Timesby Jacqui Moyies
by Jacqui Moyies
The question is where to start?Opportunities for attractive income still exist inthe corporate bond market, however investorsare having to be increasingly selective.
One of the most efficient ways to beat inflationover the longer term is to invest in the stock market and take advantage of the dividends paidby companies. After a couple of leaner years inthe teeth of the recession, the earnings of UKcompanies are looking far more healthy. On theback of those profits the outlook for dividends ismore positive.
Diversification is also key in balancing risk and returns. Inflation also brings particular problemsfor people about to retire because even a lowlevel of inflation will seriously dent pensioners’fixed incomes over a number of years.
Inflation and uncertainty go hand in hand, but itis even more marked given the current economicturmoil. It is why investors are going to have toexplore all the options to make the most fromtheir savings and investment – and maybe takinga step up the risk ladder.
nflation can cause havoc for your personal finances as it erodes the real value of our
money over time. Inflation is creeping upwardsand could yet rise above the 5 per cent later in theyear.
If inflation ran at the Bank of England’s intendedtarget of 2 per cent, the sum of £100,000 wouldbe worth £67,297 in real terms 20 years later. However at 5 per cent the original sum of£100,000 would be worth just £37,689 in 20 years’time.
Basic rate taxpayers need to earn interest of 5.25per cent on their savings in order to make a realreturn on their money once CPI inflation is takeninto account. Higher rate taxpayers are in an evenworse position, needing returns of 7 per cent tostop the value of their deposits being shrunk byinflation. But with interest rates at rock-bottomlevels, accounts paying such high rates are veryfew and far between.
In inflationary times, when the real value of levelincome payments is eroded over a few years, it isimportant to find good and increasing sources ofinvestment income.
This is the big dilemma for many savers today.
Not unreasonably, they do not want to lose apenny of their hard-earned cash. But with increasing life expectancy and potential long-term care costs to consider, they will needtheir money to work harder for longer – and this islikely to mean taking on more risk.

risk losing their licence, so it is quite clear which isthe greater deterrent to speeding”, said Mr Hickman.
However, ACPO feel there is room for flexibility;"Clearly if someone is breaking the speed limitoutside a school at 3.15pm, it's a no brainer andthey would be punished. But at 3am when streetsare empty, there is a degree of discretion”, said thespokeswoman.
'Get-out-of-jail-free card?'Chief Examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motoring said that they supported the changes,"We don't feel it’s a 'get-out-of-jail-free card' asdrivers can only attend one course in a three-yearperiod, so repeat offenders will still be hit withpoints on their licence.” Essex Police were one ofthe 37 forces who have endorsed the new guide-lines, but the Metropolitan and City of Londonforces have not.
ost English and Welsh Police forces haveadopted new speeding guidelines that
could allow motorists to travel at 86mph - 10%above the limit, plus 9mph – whilst avoiding pointson their licence by paying for a speed awarenesscourse.
Previous legislation allowed 10% above the limit, plus 6mph, but 37 of the 44 national forces at a recent meeting of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) agreed to the changes.
Education, not punishment. An ACPO spokeswoman said "Evidence suggeststhat if people are sent on educational courses, ratherthan being punished with fines and points, they areless likely to reoffend in the future".
Courses could now be offered at up to 42mph in a30mph zone, a major concern for critics such as JoelHickman, from road safety charity Brake. "If you hit achild at 30mph, it's the equivalent of that childfalling out of a three storey building. Driving at42mph would give that child no chance of survival”,argued Mr Hickman.
Wrong message"It sends out a message that it's ok to speed, whichit certainly is not. It results in huge numbers ofdeaths and casualties, and speeding is a factor in aquarter of all crashes”. "Many people would ratherpay £100 for a course than accumulate points and

recipe of the month
Next month’s recipe:Sesame Salmon Cakes with Spicy Tomato Dip
Chocolate and Banana Tart
For the pastry, place the hazelnuts in a food processor and pulse until chopped. Add 40g/ 1 ½oz of the flour and pulse again until you have a finemixture. Add the rest of the flour, the icing sugar, butter and a pinch of salt. Whizz’ briefly until themixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Mix the eggyolk with about 1 ½ tbsp of iced water and add tothe mixture. Pulse until it comes together into aclump, adding a little more water if necessary. Turnonto a worktop and knead lightly, now lightly flourthe surface and roll out the pastry to line a26cm/10in loose-bottomed 4cm deep tart case.Do not worry if the pastry cracks just patch it andpress together. Prick the base and chill for 30 mins.
Preheat the oven to 190c/fan 170c/gas 5 and placea baking sheet in the oven. Line the tart with baking paper and fill with either ceramic beans, riceor crumpled foil. Bake for 15-20 minutes until theedges are just turning colour. Remove the paperand beans and bake for a further 5 minutes. Remove and brush the base with a little of the eggwhite to seal it and return to the oven for 3-4 minutes until the base is crisp and golden. Setaside. Lower the oven to 160c/fan 140/gas 3
Place the milk, cream and sugar in a pan over amedium heat and slowly bring to scalding point.Take off the heat and stir in the chocolate untilsmooth. Lightly beat the eggs, then whisk into thechocolate mixture, then pour into a jug.
Peel and slice the bananas and arrange over thebase of the pastry case. Pull out the oven shelfhalfway and place the tart on the baking sheet.Carefully pour in the chocolate mixture and slidethe oven shelf back in. Bake for 35-40 mins untilthe filling is just wobbly in the centre(it will firm upas it cools).
Wait for the tart to get cold, cut into wedges andserve with whipped cream.
his is quite a decadent dessert, but handy as itcan be made the day before, kept in the fridge
and then brought to room temperature beforeserving. The hazelnuts in the pastry give it a lovelycrunch and flavour. This is a large tart that serves atleast 12. If you want to make a small tart halve theingredients and use a 20cm/8in tart tin.
Enjoy!

n Saturday 1st October, 10 friends from theSouthend area will set off to ride 650 miles
from Southend (Scotland) back to sunnySouthend-on-Sea (Essex), their aim being tocomplete the ride in 8 days. The event has beenorganised to raise money for two very worthyCharities, Havens Hospices and The WillowFoundation.
Late last year the idea of doing a long bike rideinstead of another marathon was brought up.Wanting to do something a bit different and toend up in in our home town of Southend, a briefGoogle search uncovered another Southend onthe Mull of Kintyre, approximately 650 milesaway. After a few chats in the pub, a group of 10riders was gathered together to start organisingthe big event.
The team fly to Glasgow on Friday 30th September and start the ride the followingmorning on 1st October. Each day they will becycling 80 miles on average although day 2 is agruelling 90 plus miles, including the dreadedhill climb called "The Rest and be Thankful". Theroute takes them through Glasgow, on to Gretnathen across the Yorkshire Moors. On day 5 thegroup head down through Lincolnshire and onday 7 arrive in Cambridge. The last day, Saturday8th October, is a mere (!) 65 mile pedal homewith a final destination of The Pier.
At the time of writing this article, the group hasraised a total of £5000 towards their target of
O £20,000 which will be split equally between the2 Charities. One of the riders, Mike Whistler, isalso riding in aid of the RNLI to help raise moneyfor the new boathouse in Southend. If you wouldlike to sponsor them, please go to:http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserPage.action?userUrl=CycleSouthend2Southend&faId=126998&isTeam=true.

You’ve torn a muscle, either by overstretching ormaking a sudden movement without havingwarmed up properly. It’s painful, but you candeal with this common problem straight awayby following the PRICE regime:
P = protection which means ensuring youdon’t repeat the movement that caused the tearin the first place.
R = rest: which doesn’t necessarily meanlounging on the sofa! It can simply mean tomove the muscle gently but make sure you don’task too much of it.
I = ice: apply an ice pack for 20 minutes everyhour. A bag of frozen peas works well and thecold can help to reduce the discomfort andswelling.
C = compression: apply supportive or crepebandage to the area if appropriate
E = elevation: keep the limb above the level ofthe heart for 20 minutes every few hours
If you follow this regime for 72 hours, you shouldbe on the way to full recovery though this naturally depends on other factors such as fitness state, your age, medical conditions anddrugs used.
For a minor tear you will probably be back to fullfitness within three to four weeks; a major tearcould take six weeks or longer.
A qualified physiotherapist may offer acupunctureto ease discomfort and a form of massage calledmyofascial release, which ensures tissue aroundthe site is not affected, followed by a graded rehabilitation programme to enable your returnto sport and everyday activities.
