As the days shorten and the
weather cools, the month of
October is always a special time
in the life of our parish. We
usually enjoy our annual retreat
to Valle Crucis, and have a public
blessing of the animals in
conjunction with celebrating the
life of St. Francis, and rehearsals
begin for the 12th Night Festival.
None of those things are happening this year, but the mission
and ministry of St. Peter by-the-Lake still continues on our
campus and beyond. We continue to collect and disburse food
for those in need through the East Lincoln Christian Ministry and
the Back Pack for Kids programs. I’ve seen folks hard at work
bringing and preparing those non-perishable items for the folks
who desperately need them.
Even though we can’t physically go inside our local nursing
home as we’ve done every week until the pandemic, St. Peter’s
continues to minister to the needs of the residents there by
collecting and taking special food and hygiene items and
dropping them off at the front door. There is a special need
there for things like fresh fruit, apples and bananas and oranges.
And through the generosity of folks here that need is being met
each week.
As your rector I’ll be offering several avenues for Christian
Formation both through the ZOOM video format, and in some
small in-person groups of less than 25. I’m preparing lessons for
Supper & the Word, and for the Brotherhood of St. Peter. And
our formation director Kina Cartee is preparing a formation class
to offer as well. EFM (Education for Ministry) kicked off last
week, in person since the numbers are small and we can socially

distance ourselves and wear masks, and it’s been so wonderful
to get back to doing some ‘in-person’ facilitating. In times like
this, we need to hear and tell our sacred stories of faith and
continue to learn from them.
Our outdoor worship services, which have been so well
received, will continue on into October, as will our virtual
services of Morning and Prayer and mid-week Compline/Evening
Prayer. I’m hopeful that sometime in October we can begin the
transition back to some inside worship as well.
And last, but certainly not least, October always kicks off our
annual ‘Service & Giving’ fall stewardship drive. It’s that time of
year when we are all asked to prayerfully and thoughtfully
consider what our gifts of ‘time, talent, and treasure’ will be for
the upcoming year. Pledge envelopes will be available to all of
us early in the month of October. Please take them, read the
Senior Warden’s letter, and then begin your own process of
considering your gifts back to our Lord through the ministrations
of His Church. Everyone has been so incredibly faithful in giving
during the pandemic, and I know that sacrificial spirit will
continue on as we plan for future ministry. May God continue to
bless our mission and ministries here at St. Peter by-the-Lake, as
we reach out to our community and beyond, in faith and love,
and serve our neighbors in the name of the Risen Christ.
Faithfully,
Father Ron

I am thankful to God for our large street front area grassed and
shaded by the canopy of trees. We rejoice as we worship together,
and also as we gather for Morning Prayer online. We rejoice as
Father Ron leads us in Compline and Evening Prayer. We are
blessed and our hearts are filled with joy.
Julian of Norwich wrote about what she
learned from Jesus, during another time
in human history when disease was
rampant and fear a constant, "And so
our good Lord answered all the
questions and doubts which I could
raise, saying most comfortingly: I make
all things well, and I can make all things
well, and I shall make all things well,
and I will make all things well; and you
will see for yourself that every kind of
thing will be well ... And in these words
God wishes us to be enclosed in rest
and peace."
In all of our journey, God will always strengthen each of us with his
power. He will always lead and direct our steps.
Rejoice with great joy!
Faithfully,

Most of us would like to know what the future holds, especially if
we could know when the pandemic will be over. We worry and
stress (myself included) as though we were in control of things.
Isaiah tells us “The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy
your needs..” Isaiah 58:11. In the hymn “Guide Me, O Thou Great
Jehovah”, Welsh hymn writer William Williams compared the
Christian life to the Israelites’ trek through the wilderness. Even
though we don’t know the way God will lead us, we can count on
His guidance.
As a college student, Williams first prepared for a career in
medicine. In 1738, he heard a man preaching in a Welsh
churchyard, and his life was radically changed. He responded in
faith becoming a preacher and singer/song writer. Williams first
pursued becoming an Anglican priest (in the Church of Wales) and
entered as a deacon in 1740. However, he soon came to discover that
his heart was with itinerant work. He left his small parish in the
mountains to join with the traveling Methodist preachers. The church in
Wales was still primarily singing metrical psalms in their worship
services. Revivalists realized that the Welsh language was lacking in
hymns. In order to promote the creation of hymns, a hymn-writing
competition was held between the itinerant preachers. Williams won
the competition. “He was gifted with the poet’s passion and a gift of
verse-writing and became known as poet laureate of the Welsh revival.”
One writer puts it this way: “He sang Wales into piety… Soon all

of Wales was singing their way to the coal mines and soccer
matches.” (Petersen. The One Year Book of Hymns.)
When we are stressing (about anything), we can reflect on the words of this great hymn.
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more. Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through; Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield. Be Thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death and Hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side;
Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to Thee, I will ever give to Thee.

Kids and Families, have you been enjoying our virtual lessons
each week? I try to send a piece of it out three times a week, so it
only takes a few minutes to do each part. Do you have thoughts or
feedback on how it’s going, or how it could be better? Please reach
out to me. And don’t forget the weekly challenges that I have
included in some of the emails. I have prizes that I really want to
give away to you!!
This month we will be embarking on
a new series entitled called the Fab
5! Don’t miss the incredible story of
Elijah and his showdown with the
prophets of Baal.
Adults and Teens, we have certainly been missing you in our
small group studies. I think it is finally
safe enough to have one inside (socially
distanced of course). Therefore, starting at
6:30 on October 6th in the parish hall we
begin a new study entitled:
Notorious: .An Integrated Study of the
Rogues, Scoundrels, and Scallywags of
Scripture
This group will be open to the first 25 people to add their names to

We will meet from Tuesday, October 6th -Tuesday, November 27th
at 6:30 in the parish hall. If you can, please sign up by Friday,
October 2nd, so that I can have a copy of the book ready for you. If
you sign up later, no worries I can make copies of the lessons until
your book arrives.
You are probably asking what's it about??
The Bible is full of men and women who strayed from the path of
good. But is there something good these bad people can teach us?
In this nine-part series, we will take a look at the rogues,
scoundrels, and scallywags in a new light. Discover what God
wants to teach through their often-familiar fragilities and failures
when you explore questions like:
What can Cain show us about authentic worship? How does King
Saul's daughter help us understand kindness? What can we learn
September’s vestry meeting included a discussion of the Jesus with Children Statue located to the right of the Furr Hall entryway. The statue had been previously repaired, and its current condition has recently deteriorated significantly. Repair of the cracks and loss of the bronze surface treatment are expected to be expensive. Therefore the vestry decided to authorize the removal of the statue.
STEWARDSHIP, or giving, is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. Stewardship provides an opportunity to reflect on all we have received. It is an opportunity for us to take the time to count our blessings and prayerfully consider how to gratefully acknowledge those blessings. Our gifts are a return gift to Him who gives all things; a way to express joy for our place in the world around us and to show our gratitude for it. "Let hope keep you joyful; in trouble stand firm; persist in prayer. Contribute to the needs of God's people, and practice hospitality." (Romans 12: 12-13 - New English Bible 1970) For more information or questions, please contact Carole Rowell ([email protected] or 704-516-2312) or Tricia Wagner ([email protected] or 704-756-5511)
Vestry Members Present by Zoom: Sherree Brady, Vicki Gaver, Ron Horne, Cindi Jarvis, Daniel Malyevac, Scott Mical, Ronnie Rudd, Rebecca Smith, Michelle Stewart Clergy Present: Father Ron Taylor, Deacon Judy Cole Other Members Present: Daphne Wagner, Gary Johnston Opening Prayer: (Deacon Judy)
Discussion/Decision: Minutes: July minutes were approved.
Financials: (Gary Johnston) Income year to date in 2020 is 15k less than 2019, however expenses are over 22k less in 2020 than 2019. Income is down and so are our expenses. We continue to meet all of our obligations to the Diocese and outside organizations. Financials for July approved. Junior Warden: (Ronnie Rudd)
Ronnie will e-mail options for parish workday, for either Sept 12 or Sept 19th. There will be a sign up genie, for basically putting out mulch and pine straw. The workday should go quick. Ladies of the Garden Club will take care of the main church entrance. Ronnie will get with Kate and get a date agreed upon. We will need someone with a pick-up truck or trailer. We need to try to limb some trees so we can see the parking lot better as someone has been making circular burn marks with their tires.
The Bell tower had one proposal, but we didn’t like it. We will get something out in the next 7-10 days.
Live streaming for the services is almost complete, we still need a little work on figuring out how to use equipment but hook up work is done. We will get with LeAnne on thoughts with placement of screen so she knows when to stop playing the hymns. Senior Warden: (Ron Horne)
Kitchen plans; we are making a lot of progress. We had a good meeting with Campbell and Associates and Jennifer Baker. Jennifer Baker and Julia Campbell have been working together. Started a preliminary layout of the scope of work. The whole kitchen committee is involved, and Jennifer Baker has agreed to be the point person. We
14
are not buying any new appliances, just moving things around. There will be a new stainless-steel worktable. We are also moving to a tankless water heater to help save in energy costs. The current plan does not take the window out.
The state of the parish is good and healthy.
Upcoming Events: (Father Ron)
NC Governor still has us in phase 2 until September 11th,
so weeks after that would be the earliest time we can consider moving
inside. The House of Bishops had a zoom conference with Dr. Fauci.
Dr. Fauci said if your space is big enough you can have up to 50 people.
Based on our shade canopy we decided on 40 people.
We want to try to have some EYC activities outdoors
with social distancing and wearing masks, so we are trying an event on
Aug 30th. It is very important to get our youth back together.
Next month we will try to meet in Furr Hall with proper
social distancing.
Deacon Report: (Deacon Judy Cole)
I continue to call Lakewood every other week to see
their needs. We have 10-12 people in church that e-mail frequently
willing to help. Once a week we have someone from the church taking
items they need. They are now letting residents out of the rooms to
roam halls.
Becky mentioned that we have not heard from the
stewardship campaign. We haven’t been meeting, and it’s been difficult
to do long term planning. Father Ron will call Leo and get things rolling.
Try to put these in motion before the end of August.
Ronnie wants vestry thoughts on parish workday.
Closing Prayer: (Deacon Judy)
15
Centering Prayer is meeting downstairs at
10AM on Wednesdays. We hope you will join
in to pray together this "Prayer of the Heart".
