Looking back at 2012, it’s hard to believe we are quickly approaching the end of our 50th year as a church. We have shared a wonderful year of remembering God’s many blessings upon us. We have rejoiced in the goodness of God shown through special time with each of our previous senior

pastors, through a fantastic Journey of Worship led by our beloved worship leaders, and by celebrating how God’s hand of grace has shaped our preaching, teaching, ministry, and missions throughout the decades. Now, as we approach the end of this great year, it is right for us to renew our commitment to be people of unwavering faith and unconditional love.

We have an incredible weekend planned October 27-28. We are offering a special worship and celebration schedule, with a Saturday celebration at 6pm, and two Sunday worship times at 9 and 11am, all accompanied by special food and music in a festive atmosphere. Be sure to pick up your free tickets and join us for this special moment in our history when we launch from our first 50 years to the next exciting season God has prepared for us.

As we continue to celebrate our 50th year as a church, we are planning a special weekend to commemorate the occasion. This capstone event will include three identical services where we will gather to remember God’s blessings upon our church, rejoice in His ongoing faithfulness, and renew our commitment to follow Him and reach our community and world with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

All three of the weekend services will be held in our Worship Center and will include special music, teaching, worship and celebration. You will have the opportunity to attend at one of the following unique service times: Saturday at 6pm or Sunday at 9am or 11am.

So that we can ensure enough room for everyone to attend, we will be giving out tickets to the three services. Consider joining us on Saturday evening, if you are able, as our two Sunday services are likely to be more crowded. Again, all three services will be exactly the same. After each service, we will be serving refreshments and hosting a time of fellowship and celebration.

With grateful hearts, we will recount God’s faithfulness and recommit ourselves to His vision for our future. Plan now to join us for one of these special services. You won’t want to miss this significant milestone in the life of our church!

A Call to Honor Our PastorsWe continue our 50th Anniversary

celebration by interviewing Dr. Larry Anderson who served

as Scottsdale Bible’s Interim Senior Pastor while simultaneously shepherding Scottsdale Bible’s North Campus, now known as North Bible Church.

As Scripture calls us to remember our leaders, we honor the six senior pastors God called to faithfully teach His Word at Scottsdale Bible for the last half century.

Throughout 2012, each publication of The Compass has featured an interview with one of Scottsdale Bible’s six senior pastors. As we have profiled the men God ordained to lead our church, we have learned about each pastor’s tenure, their victories, joys and challenges. We have looked at how God worked in the lives of these men and subsequently the church, their personal walk with the Lord, how He called them to minister, and how He led them to their present work for His Kingdom.

Over the course of the year, each pastor has returned to Scottsdale Bible’s pulpit to teach on one of the seven churches from Revelation.

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith…for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.

-Hebrews 13:7, 17b

Dr. Larry Anderson

remember rejoice renew

Larry came to faith in Christ at his father’s church when he was five years old. Before joining the North Bible Church family in December 2004, he served on the Young Life staff for nearly 30 years in Arizona and California as Area Director, Regional Director, and Senior Vice President. Larry’s undergraduate studies were completed at ASU and he earned his M.A. in Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary. Larry served as the Interim Senior Pastor and Interim Executive Pastor for Scottsdale Bible Church while also leading North Bible for four years. Larry and his wife, Gina, have three sons: Caleb (Hilary), Josh (Kimberly), and Aaron (Amber); and four grandchildren: Lucy, J.T., Eli, and Ruby.

A Legacy of Faith… “My father was a pastor and every time the church doors opened, we were there. I grew up in the church,” said Dr. Anderson. “My parents lived out their faith in front of us. They loved Christ, they were faithful and they exemplified what it means to be a follower of Jesus. I distinctly remember walking down the aisle when I was five years old and giving my life to Christ. A lot of people think age five is too young, but I have never forgotten that moment.”

The Calling…“I was involved in Young Life in high school, a volunteer leader in college and ultimately served on the staff for nearly 30 years. When I finished my career with Young Life, I felt God leading me to local church ministry, and then I received a call from Scottsdale Bible Church in 2004. Initially, I was to come alongside the North Campus congregation, but in 2006 when Pastor Darryl DelHousaye was named full-time President of Phoenix Seminary, I also became the interim Senior Pastor of the main campus.”

Setting the Table…“I was the transition person,” he said. “Darryl had been Scottsdale Bible’s pastor for 25 years. He was like a founder, and I was the bridge person. I looked at myself as someone who would set the table for the next senior pastor. My job was to move the congregation from a person they dearly loved, Pastor Darryl, and prepare them for the new pastor whom God would call to lead Scottsdale Bible Church.”

Larry expressed how much he loves his role at North Bible Church and the family there. He is very proud of the staff and knows that effective ministry requires a strong team.

Heemphasized,“Ijustwanttoaddthatthisjourney has been in partnership with my wife, Gina, and I could not have done this without her.”

Q: How did God use you at Scottsdale Bible?

A: My wife, Gina, and I felt it was very important for us to show up and be present. We have a philosophy that ev-eryone’s ministry is as important as ours and we wanted to support people as they served the Lord. We were able to model what it means to be on a team and felt comfort-able setting up chairs or doing whatever needed to be done. We attended events for other ministries such as children’s, missions, youth, etc. This is just our ministry style, and my goal as an interim pastor was to be avail-able. It is also our ministry philosophy that who you are in Christ is more important than anything you do. It was vital for us to model this before people because as an interim pastor, I was not creating a new vision or making major changes. We really just wanted to walk with Christ and with people. Our mission was, and is, to simply lift up Christ.

Q: How did God grow you while you were at Scottsdale Bible?

A: During my career with Young Life, I did not preach regularly—I spoke a fair amount, but not weekly. Preaching was a skill and discipline that the Lord needed to develop in me. It was a unique area of change and growth in me.

At the North Campus, the Lord gave Gina and me a heart and passion for multi-generational ministry. We began that process at North during the interim transition time and God blessed us even in spite of ourselves. I learned to trust the Lord at a level I hadn’t experienced before, and I felt His peace in deeper ways.

Q: How did Scottsdale Bible’s North Campus become North Bible Church?

A: When Jamie became Senior Pastor and Tom Sharda, Executive Pastor, I went back to North Campus full time. At that point, we began to discuss whether North Campus should remain a second campus. Church Resource Ministries did a study of North and determined it was already a healthy, thriving church. When we presented these findings to Jamie and the elders, they gave us their blessing to become North Bible Church.

ife for Steve Redeske changed dramatically on September 19, 2010, when he experienced a car accident that nearly ended his life. From the brokenness and pain of that tragic collision, God rebuilt Steve into a man of grace and faith.

As a child, Steve had come to faith in Christ at summer camp, but in the years following, his journey focused on career ambitions and social behaviors that distanced him from God. He had little patience and wanted nothing to do with children.

In August 2010, Steve and his new wife, Nicole, moved here from Minnesota for a fresh start. Just six weeks later, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in September, Steve was driving home from work when everything about his life changed. While exiting Highway51,heexperiencedamassiveseizureandlostcontrolof both his body and his car. Traveling at a high rate of speed, Steve’s car slammed into a stopped vehicle at the end of the ramp. The driver of the other vehicle was killed and Steve was critically injured. Rescue personnel extracted Steve from his car and rushed him to the hospital.

Steve spent eight days in an induced coma and endured extensive surgeries to repair his badly injured body. Though he hadseizedtwiceinthepast15years,doctorshadclearedhimtodriveanddeterminedtheseizureswereunlikelytorecur.

After emerging from his coma, Steve’s heart changed and he realizeditwastimeforhimtotrustGodagain.Hisdecisionwasreaffirmed days later when detectives investigating the crash told him it was definitely God who saved him, not his car! Many more “God moments” were revealed during Steve and Nicole’s long journey toward healing.

In January 2011, after his long hospital stay was complete, Steve and Nicole were invited by friends to attend Scottsdale Bible’s 5pm service. As Nicole wheeled Steve into the church, they encountered a worship experience unlike anything they had expected. The music and the message from Jamie about God’s grace spoke to their hearts. The couple began attending regularly and after a pulpit call for Vacation Bible Experience volunteers, jumped into service in Children’s Ministry. Soon after, they accepted roles as Sunday coaches. Nicole is now on the Children’s Ministry staff and Steve still volunteers faithfully. He said, “I feel my service allows parents to worship regularly and, hopefully, to experience the peace and grace from God that NicoleandIhaverealizedsodramaticallyoverthesepasttwoyears.”

The Lord has done and continues to do great things on the Cactus Campus! Thank you to everyone who made our first worship service and fellowship such a triumphal time. On Sunday, September 23, more than 430 adults crowded our sanctuary and 110 children filled our classrooms. It broke my heart to see people leave on that first day because we simply had no room for them. By our second Sunday as a church, we were ready to begin offering two service times at 9:30 and 11:15am. God is already bringing so many new people from the community to fill our seats and classrooms. It is exciting to see Him expanding our outreach.

If you have friends or neighbors who live in the North Phoenix area, we encourage you to tell them about the exciting things God is doing at Scottsdale Bible Cactus. We offer everything you appreciate about the Scottsdale Bible Shea campus in a smaller more intimate setting.

Moving to two service times so quickly has created many new opportunities to serve. If you are part of our community, we urge you to consider volunteering in our Children’s Ministry or First Impressions/Welcome Ministry. We encourage volunteers to serve during one service and worship during the other, with a motto of “Worship One, Serve One.”

We are so encouraged to see our new campus come to life and grateful to the many who helped make our dreams a reality. When you joinGodwhereHeisworking, amazingthingswill happen. The launch of Scottsdale Bible Cactus has allowed all of us to see God’s hand at work through the people who volunteered and the results we have witnessed. Continue to pray for the community surrounding us—that they will want to know what’s going on at the corner of 25th Place and Cactus Road. Pray that they would find a welcoming, hospitable place filled with people who love God and others!

Have you ever been part of a small group where people cared deeply for one another, were growing in awe of God, and were bound together by true friendship? Have you ever wanted to be part of such a group? Small groups like this don’t happen by chance or accident. They are built around foundational principles that have been proven in practice. These same principles are now being taught in Scottsdale Bible’s Small Group Leadership classes.

Some years ago, as one young in genuine faith, I had the privilege of seeing these principles in practice—first as a group participant, then as a co-leader, and finally as a leader of both men’s and couples’ small groups. These groups met weekly, year-round, and transformed the lives of those in them, including mine. The Lord took our faithful effort and turned it into spiritual maturity and heart-felt care for one another.

As new Scottsdale residents, my wife, Gretchen, and I look forward to hosting a home-based small group this fall as part of Scottsdale Bible’s small group initiative. Several years have passed since my last training, so I recently enrolled in the Small Group Leader Training to refresh my knowledge about how to foster an effective small group. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is currently leading, co-leading, or considering hosting a small group. Whether you are experienced or not, applying the principles taught in this class will have an enormous impact on how your small group functions.

Leading or participating in a successful small group is the best way to grow and feel supported as part of the family of God. If you are a leader, I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to discover the principles of small group leadership and be equipped to perform your role in a way that honors God and your group members. Don’t miss this training, and if you are not presently in a small group, consider joining one!

More than 30 years ago, four individuals were listening to Pastor Darryl Delhousaye’s message about a mom who desperately wanted a place where her “handicapable” adult son would be accepted—and she wanted Scottsdale Bible Church to be that place. Joni Eareckson Tada then joined Pastor Darryl

on stage in her wheelchair, told her story, and stressed the importance of a special needs ministry and faithful volunteers to start it.

Del and Pat Mauer and Howard and Beverly Miner felt God tug at their hearts and answered the call. Although none of them had extensive experience with people who have special needs, they had accepting, loving hearts and a willingness to share Christ’s love. Howard Miner’s motto was, “Stay obedient and He’ll do the rest!”

Every Thursday night, a group of five to ten students with special needs met in the couples’ homes for Bible study and started their own “community” within Scottsdale Bible. The Mauers and Miners received acceptance, love and joy back from the students, whose capacity to be judgment-free and filled with joy, despite their disabilities, became contagious! God showed Pat Mauer that “no matter where you are, the Lord always reaches you.”

The ministry grew to 10-15 students and after a year, began meeting on our church campus. In addition to Thursday studies, they added Sunday night meetings and offered fun nights with gym activities. Eventually, they began hosting a weekend summer camp. Christi Todd, a 14-year-old student at the time, remembers it as “a time of growth in her faith as well as a time of great joy in fellowship with her friends.”

Under their first part-time director, Gary Develder from Joni and Friends, the ministry continued to grow. In 2006, Steve Lee, an intern who himself was in a wheelchair, took over Gary’s role. He had a vision for a “life skills room” and the special accommodations necessary. With the blessing and backing of Interim Pastor Larry Anderson and Outreach Director Fred Beasley, two classrooms were provided and a “Sensory Room” created.

Individuals from all over the Valley began to attend the programing, due to a lack of churches with special needs accommodations. Steve Lee’s vision to create “a place where everyone felt they belonged and were loved with the arms and feet of Christ” continued even after his departure.

Answering the Call to Begin a Special Ministry

Page 15: October Compass Issue

Current Director Amy Daniels began leading this flourishing community in 2008. Her goals were to unify the ministry as a family under one umbrella and to bring greater attention to God’s precious children.

She and many faithful volunteers have helped raise the bar and enhance the programming. Today, more than 40 students meet for Thursday adult Bible studies and at least 30 meet on Sunday. They also offer programming for ages 3-18 during the three Sunday services; monthly Friday night events to provide respite for parents/caregivers; a parent support group; monthly “fun nights” including talent shows, game nights, and pool parties; holiday celebrations; and Fall Camp at Whispering Hope Ranch.

Amy’s background includes special education classroom work and a degree in Child/Human Development and Family Studies. Her passion is to lead Special Ministries students, families and volunteers back to worshipping Jesus and living by faith as God’s awesome wonders.

Many faithful volunteers have answered the call to join this truly “Special” Ministry. Long-time volunteers include Cindy O’Connell, Gigi Visentin and Susan Farrar. Susan said, “If you had asked me back in 1998 if I would sign up to volunteer in a ministry for 14 years, I never would have considered it! But once you get involved with our wonderful friends in Special Ministries, you just want to keep coming. Here you will truly see Jesus in the hearts and faces of our friends. They never tire of giving and receiving love and affection. Special Ministries is a place where you are loved and valued because of what is inside, not what is on the outside. Our friends never care about your status or profession...they may just want to hold your hand.”

Could God be calling you to experience His gifts by investing in the lives of these special students? Join us at our Special Ministries Carnival on November 2 at 6PM and see what we’re all about!

What does it mean that Scottsdale Bible is governed by elders?Ours is an elder-led system of governance, meaning the overall leadership and watch-care of the church is done by and through the elders. Elders are the "spiritual leaders" of our church, serving according to the exhortation of 1 Peter 5:1-3, “So I exhort the elders among you: shepherd the flock of God that is among you...being examples to the flock.” They are the ones who have been tasked by God to lead, guide and oversee our congregation of faith.

What do our elders do?Our elders are all proven leaders who have served God through the church for many years. They have led enrichment classes, small groups, and other church ministries. Many have held service positionswithinChristianorganizationsinourcommunityandaround the world. Now, as they serve on the Elder Board, they meet regularly to pray and counsel those in need; oversee all ministry activity through our pastoral staff; and make decisions, along with the Senior Pastor and Executive Pastor, which affect strategy and the direction of our church. The elders have two "formal" meetings each month—one for the church’s spiritual leadership and the other for their own spiritual nurture and prayer for one another. Each of our elders is also assigned to a specific ministry area of our church (e.g., Youth Ministry or Children's Ministry or Men's Ministry), and their role is to encourage and counsel the pastor of their assigned ministry area and act as a "liaison" between that ministry and the Elder Board.

How does our board function?Prayerfully and humbly. Though each of our current elders are strong leaders in their own right, the collaborative effort of the group of twelve elders is marked by asking probing questions, followed by Spirit-led listening, and then committing whatever decisions are made to God in prayer. They are men who submit to each other's strengths. They defer regularly to each other's areas of expertise and trust each other in these areas.

Pastor Jamie on Elder Leadership

One of the hallmarks of Scottsdale Bible over our 50-year history has been the consistency of strong elder leadership. From those foundational days in 1962, elders have surrounded the pastors to seek God's leading and direction for the church. In the beginning, these godly men served as deacons. It wasn't until the late 1970s that the board changed to elders to match the language of the New Testament and more accurately reflect the responsibilities of their office. We asked Pastor Jamie to explain eldership and to relate his experiences working with elders at our church.

16 OCTOBER 2012 SCOTTSDALEBIBLE.COM

Page 17: October Compass Issue

How does our process of placing elders reassure you we are finding those who God wants on the board? Our yearly nomination process for selecting up to four new elders to be affirmed by the congregation is thorough, even exhaustive. The nominating committee is made up of five lay people and two elders—with our Executive Pastor and myself as "ex-officio" members. These nine members spend countless hours "spiritually vetting" numerous candidates who will be presented to the current Board of Elders for consideration.

At this point, our elders spend an entire meeting praying for each candidate and selecting the three to four men to be affirmed by the congregation. This is a six-month process, undertaken each year, to ensure the right men are selected for elder leadership at Scottsdale Bible. This process is bathed in much prayer, with godly collaboration and unity among our serving Elder Board. Accordingly, the process has served our church well for many years, and it is also a process in which I have much confidence.

Tell us about the men who serve as our eldersOur elders are men who passionately love Christ and have lots of maturity and wisdom when it comes to guiding and directing His Church. They don't bring their personal agendas to the table; rather, they consistently want God's best for the church. I actually look forward to my regular meeting times with our elders and find joy in receiving their leadership and direction.

How would you describe your experience working with our elders?I love working with our elders! Though I have always been blessed to be a part of churches that have honored elder leadership, our church is uniquely blessed to have unusually wise and experienced elders. These men are non-reactionary in their leadership and wise in their discernments. In the time that I have been your Senior Pastor, there have been a number of occasions where the wisdom, direction and oversight of the elders have literally set the course for the future ministry of our church. This actually happens on a regular basis.

How Do We Choose? An Elder Nominating Team Member Gives His Account

This past spring, I was invited to join several other Scottsdale Bible members in nominating candidates for the Elder Board. While I was unaware of the process our church uses to establish elders, I have always admired the results. Having now participated in the process, I am more encouraged than ever with the procedure Scottsdale Bible has in place for these important decisions.

The team consisted of nine men and women who committed to a very well-thought-out nominating process. Those of us new to the effort were introduced to several goals set in place to maintain the integrity and strength of the Board. First, it is important to keep a balance on the Elder Board between first-time Board members and elders with some past experience. Second, it is desirous to maintain a good age distribution across the 12 elder positions. Finally, it is important to consider the issues the Board might deal with in the coming three to four years and the complementary spiritual gifts and talents needed to deal with them. Once these goals were understood, each member of the nominating committee reviewed a complete list of every male member of Scottsdale Bible.

Over the course of three weeks, consisting of several long meetings and much prayer, a list of more than 2,000 men was narrowed down to about 20 to 25 candidates who seemed to be perfect to meet the needs of the Board. Each of these candidates was then contacted to confirm our conclusions and invite their prayerful consideration. A finalmeetingwasheldtofinalizethelistofcandidatesandthen their names were forwarded to the Elder Board. After more prayer and discussion, the elders then presented to the church membership a slate of candidates for confirmation.

Looking back on my participation as part of the elder nominating team, I am most impressed by the intentionality Scottsdale Bible uses to carry out this process. Additionally, I am humbled by the depth of elder-ready men in our congregation. As a side note: during the process, I remember being surprised at how many good men I know at our church who were not on the “membership” list. If you call Scottsdale Bible Church home, please consider becoming a member. Your church may someday need your special gifts and talents on the Elder Board.

Thefamiliesweservedwereamazedbytheoutpouring of love and generosity and could not stop talking about how much Scottsdale Bible and our volunteers blessed them with their kindness, gifts and practical service.

As you can imagine, this outreach needs many hands and feet to make it happen. There are opportunities to decorate, cook and serve food, sort and pass out gifts, help with crafts and games, and so much more! We will also have opportunities to purchase Christmas gifts for the boys and girls attending the celebration. Tags will be available on Sundays throughout November—look for the Christmas trees on campus.
