A $350 million campaign for strong parishes, Catholic education and faith formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago

renovate little church kitchen

update the little church basement

repave parking lots

NOW is the time for your commitment! Turn in your pledge at Mass next week

during Leadership Weekend!

Over the course of the last few weeks, many families have re-ceived their information detailing the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign either through a fellow parishioner, at the October 26th event, or the mail. Now is the time to return your deci-sion and join together in support of the efforts of St. Mary of the Annunciation and the Archdiocese of Chicago!

Our main parish priority in the campaign is retiring the construction debt that remains from building our beautiful church, meeting rooms and offic-es. To help St. Mary achieve this result, the Archdiocese will match $1.2 mil-lion in parish campaign payments on an extraordinary 3-to-1 basis to completely eliminate our $4.8 million capital debt! Once our debt has been retired, campaign proceeds will be used to repave our crumbling parking lots and renovate the little church kitchen and basement for use by PADS and other parish meetings and functions.

Bring your pledge card and drop it into the collection next weekend.

Let’s all make a difference and come together as a parish.

Campaign Update

We have raised more than $1,410,300 thanks to the early commitments from 77 families! Thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity, and prayers. The To Teach Who Christ Is Team continues to invite more and more families to participate each week. Please accept their invitation and prayerfully consider how you might help. Your gift will ensure a vibrant future for our parish, and Catholic education across Chicago.

God Is With Us The book of Wisdom tells us that the spirit of God is in all things. What a wonderful thought, and what a wonderful image to keep in front of us as we travel down life’s road. For if the path is revealed in the treading, it’s good to know that God is with us—and all around us—every step of the way. But Paul knows that this divine presence is not timid. In-stead, God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the Thessalonians, might be made worthy of that call. And who knows more about God’s call than Zacchaeus, the tax collector? Jesus called him out of a tree, for goodness’ sake. Or perhaps more correctly, as we reflect upon the end of today’s Gospel reading, for heaven’s sake.

ABOUT DEATH, GRIEF, AND ALL SAINTS/ALL SOULS

Our Church remembers the dead during the month of November. We celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day. We inscribe the names of those who have died in the parish Book of the Dead. We place photos in the church to remember our loved ones. We honor and cherish the people we have loved. And we remember the dead in our mass intentions year round.

After the loss of a loved one, we can expect that we will go through some kind of grief process. The one whom we held so dear is no longer with us, and we need to mourn that loss if we are to move on with our lives in a healthy way. That mourning will have no time limit. It will not proceed logi-cally or step-by-step, and may hit us over and over again. We know we have to go through our grief; there is no way around it. We must work through it, and that will be the hardest work we will ever attempt. Support groups and therapists and grief literature may help in get-ting us to face our grief. We should take advantage of them. If you would like more information about support groups, local therapists or literature rec-ommendations, please do not hesitate to contact me. Prayer and ritual are also important parts of the healing process in our journey through grief. As Catholics, prayer and ritual are a central part of our existence; they provide a framework for us where through the use of rep-etition, familiarity, and transformation of what is known, new behaviors, actions, and meanings can occur. In times of grief, prayer and ritual can bring a sense of balance and peace. They give us an opportunity to say good-bye, to express our pain, to adjust to a transition, to remember our loved ones, and to place those “remembrances” in the context of the present. Hope-fully, they can raise our awareness so that, together with others assembled in remembrance, a sense of transformation can take place. No matter what we have experienced, if we are open and responsive to the depth of that experience, we will begin to understand more fully the paradoxes in our lives. Life is not just happy, or just sad; life is a combina-tion of the two. We see this over and over again in the life of Christ. No mat-ter how dark and frightening the nights of struggle have been after the death of our loved one, we can be assured that daylight will always come. The faithful of St. Mary’s pray for all who are grieving and surround those seek-ing support with the knowledge that those in mourning do not walk alone. May prayer and ritual help us all to obtain a sense of solace and healing as we set aside time to honor this time in our lives. If you or someone you know would like more information about coping with death and loss, please contact Diane Mulroe [email protected] Excerpts from Praying Through Grief, by Mauryeen O’Brien, O.P. copy-right 1997 Ave Maria Press.

Pacific Garden Mission Opportunity Come with us to the shelter in Chicago. Sunday: November 6th 2016 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm Future 2016 dates: December 4th

Pacific Garden Mission has been a refuge for millions of weary people seeking food, shelter, clothing, medical care and dental care. They are also offered an answer to life's struggles: faith in Jesus Christ. Pacific Garden Mission is located at 1458 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL. Our group meets at the Mission by 12:30pm. You may come individually or as a family. Bring a friend. Our volunteer group name, Saint Mary of the Annunciation, is to be given at check-in. We make beds, fold towels, serve lunch and help in a variety of other ways. A tour of the Mission is offered to first time visitors. Carpooling is availa-ble. Carpooler riders and drivers assemble in the Narthex before the 11:30 mass; and depart for PGM no later than 11:15 am. Contact in advance: Jim Robinson [email protected] (847) 970-9213 or Bill Pohl [email protected] (847) 404-7431 if you would like to participate in mission with us. We answer questions and help with carpooling arrangements.

Dear Parishioners, I would like to offer congratula-tions to Dan Prezell, who received the “Christifideles Award” from Archbishop Blase Cupich at Holy Name Cathedral last Sunday. This award is bestowed on lay-persons who have demonstrated excep-tional dedication in using his or her talents to deepen the life of the Church or has served in an extraordinary way in the ministry of their parish. Each parish in the Archdiocese may nominate someone for this recognition.

Dan serves the people of St. Mary quite generously in many ways. He is a Eucharistic minister, lector and leader of pray-er. He began a lectio divina group here, serves on the Parish Council and on the Human Concerns Commission. Dan also began our hospital visitation ministry at Con-dell Hospital. These are only a

few of the things Dan does for our parish community and we are very grateful indeed for his dynamic witness to the Gospel.

J from

W ell acob’s I also want to extend a special word of thanks to Kara Bari-

na, who is retiring from her position at the end of October. Kara has served for over 10 years as the administrative assistant of the Reli-gious Education Department assisting Sue Matousek. Kara brought great skill and dedication to organizing all of the critical behind-the-scenes administrative details that are so necessary to running an ef-fective program. We pray for her as she moves on to this next chapter in her life. At the same time, we extend a warm welcome to Jen Pep-ping, who will be assuming this position effective November 1st. Jen is certainly no stranger to St. Mary as she has served for many years as the volunteer coordinator of adult formation in addition to her service in leadership on the Faith Formation Commission and Parish Pastoral Council. Finally, I want to express a profound word of thanks to those who have supported the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. I am hum-bled and grateful for the work and generosity of those who have served on the Executive Committee. I ask for your prayers and contin-ued support. I realize that we have not yet been able to personally invite every parishioner to participate. We continue the process of reaching out to our families as the campaign progresses. There will be an opportunity for every parishioner to participate on Commitment Sunday, which is December 3rd and 4th at every Mass.

Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

In a few days we will celebrate the great feast of All Saints Day. On this day we honor those disciples of the Lord who

have gone before us into the kingdom of heaven. And we hope that one day we, too, will be counted among their number. The Feast of All Saints does not simply recall the “hall of fame” saints such as Peter, Paul, Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and Cath-erine of Sienna, et al. We also honor the countless disciples who

led lives of faith, service and virtue and have thus entered into the joy of heaven. We confidently hope that this number includes our virtuous, faith-filled family members and friends who have preceded us in death. Every Sunday in the Creed we proclaim our belief in the “communion of saints.” But what does this mean? Simply put, we be-lieve that the unity and life of all believers transcends the bounds of space and time. We are joined with those who have gone before us and those who will come after. We are all bound together as a living body that has been saved by Jesus Christ, a body united in the praise and worship and service of a God who transcends our concept of time. As we celebrate the Eucharist and live out our call to be followers of Jesus of Nazareth, we do so together with Francis of Assisi, Peter and Paul, Mary, and Mother Teresa. The communion of saints is a living body of living people sharing a living faith, not a roster of deceased ancestors extracted from the pages of history. Who, then, is a saint? We usually associate the term only with those who died as martyrs for the faith, had some mystical experi-ence, or who lived with such superlative virtue and charity that they seem superhuman. If the only saints are people who meet these standards, our chances are quite slim indeed! But we miss the point if we sanitize the saints so much that we lose their humanity. The saints we hail led lives of struggle and imperfection. Augustine was a playboy who could put Hugh Heffner to shame until he changed his ways. (As he wrestled with his lifestyle, Augustine once famously prayed, “O Lord give me chastity, but not yet.”) We know Peter and Paul as two of the greatest saints. Yet, Peter denied even knowing Jesus and Paul led vigilante mobs that stoned early Christians to death. Later, Peter and Paul (neither being a shrink-ing violet) could barely stand to be in the same room with one another because they disagreed so vehemently about how to bring Gentiles into the Church. Bernard of Clairvaux was hardly a model of Christian charity when he described William Fitzherbert as “rotten from the top of his head to the soles of his feet” during a time of dispute. Both are recognized as saints. The saints struggled in their humanness just as you and I do, which is why they are such great role models. They can remind us that we are all called to be better than we are – more loving, more life-giving, more peace-making, more justice-seeking – in the image of Christ. Their examples are far more powerful if we see them as the normal people they really were. If they could overcome their failings, you and I can too. One old saying says, “Saints are sinners who keep on trying.” Another adage says, “There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future.” Sainthood is not perfection; it is growth and committed dedi-cation to Christ and his Gospel. Each and every one of us is called to holiness amidst the messiness and trials of daily life. Holiness is a journey, not a destination. As we celebrate the Feast of All Saints and pray for All Souls, let us embrace the journey and look to those who have gone before for inspiration and guidance…with a bit of amuse-ment thrown in! If these men and women could do it, there’s definitely hope for you and me! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

Treasures from Our Tradition The recent “October count” tracking the statistics of participation at Sunday Mass calls to mind the situations of churches where it is difficult or impossible for Catholics to worship freely. This is especially striking in English Catholic history, as freedom of worship was systematically dis-mantled at the time of the Reformation. It seems that most English people retained deeply Catholic sympathies throughout the period of religious upheaval. Catholics who refused to participate in the public worship of the Church of England were called “recusants,” and beginning with the reign of Elizabeth I, they were subject to strict penalties. Recusant literally means “a person refusing to obey a command.” Most of those laws were in force until the early 1800s, and Catholics were not entirely emancipat-ed from the duty of Anglican worship until 1829. Recusants paid heavy fines for not attending the state church. Holding on to Catholic faith was therefore a luxury of the very rich, who maintained private chapels, and sent their daughters and sons to Eng-lish convents and monastery schools on the continent. Remarkably, the first among all British peers, the Dukes of Norfolk, the hereditary Earls Marshal of England, have never given up their Catholic faith. Many of these wealthy recusant families founded the colony of Maryland, and later many members of the old Catholic families continued on to the Kentucky frontier in search of greater religious freedom. —Rev. Prayer for Vocations

God of Love, You call us to live in your love through the grace of our baptism.

Bless us with the courage to carry out the mission of Jesus. Grant us open and generous hearts to see the needs of others and to respond with compassion.

May the Church be blest with women and men who are dedicated to you through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and the consecrated life.

It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselves to you now and forever. Amen.
