She had extensive experience in the insurance industry before joining The Co- operators Company. Karen’s topic was the Fort McMurray fire, ‘A View from the Claims Department’. Karen started her presentation by explaining how the fire developed. Last May 1st there was a small fire burning on the outskirts of Fort McMurray, the origin of which has not been determined. On May 2nd with the help of an increasing and shifting wind, the fire doubled in size and jumped the river. On May 3rd the now out of control fire was spreading at 300 meters per hour. The city’s citizens were ordered to evacuate. Those living on the south side of the city had only one exit: Highway 63. Those on the north side of the city evacuated some 50 plus miles to the oil sands plant area. In total there were over 80,000 people evacuated. Karen showed several slides showing how the disaster unfolded. Those going south had to drive through a mile of burning cinders and ash to escape. For the next few days photos of the disaster were being shown throughout Canada on social media. Karen then explained how her insurance team went about serving the 4,000 clients The Co-operators had in Fort McMurray. The company tried the reach out to each and every client. It made every effort to let the clients know how they were covered. On May 18th before and after pictures of various areas were available to clients so they could see if their property was damaged. The Co-operators Insurance set up a reception centre to receive their clients when they were able to return. On June 1st, an orderly re-entry began. The Co-operators prepared their clients for re-entry by advising them as to what necessities they had to bring ... things such as water, medicines and clothing. Very few stores were open at the start of the re- entry. Karen said this was by far Canada’s worst disaster in terms of dollar loss. She said it was the “most tragic thing she has been involved in”. Karen was thanked for her presentation by President Dave.
