    6th Sunday of Easter

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)

    Eve T. Horvidalla

    to page 4F

In our Gospel (Mt. 22:34-40) on this 30th Sunday inOrdinary Time, Jesus teaches

the community of His followersthe Good News as the way of lifein their relationship with God, self

and neighbor: You shall love theLord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all yourmind. You shall love your neighboras yourself. (Mt. 38-39). Love is thegreatest commandment because itembraces the whole law of God,and the second commandment isto love our neighbor who is Godsimage. The greatest example of thisis Jesus Himself He loved totallyin obedience to His Father to theextent that He gave His whole lifefor us. So like Jesus, we too mustlove God above all things and

others with our entire being. The irst letter of John (1John

4:20) tells us: If anyone says, Mylove is ixed on God, yet hates hisbrother, he is a liar. One who has nolove for the brother he sees, cannotlove God he has not seen, Love forman is grounded on our love forGod Who is our Father.

All the commandments arebased on love. We open ourselves to God byopening our hearts to Him in faithful prayer.Let us personally know the prayer revealedby Jesus. Jesus prayed so that He couldconnect Himself to the Father. According to

Gandhi: Prayer has saved my life. Withoutprayer, I would have lost reason. If I havenot lost peace, in spite of all the ordealsin my life, its because this peace comesfrom prayer. I can live a couple of dayswithout eating but not without praying.Prayer, to me, is the morning key and thenights bolt. To love is to take time to prayfor others who need our prayers. Gandhialso said: When you see misery that youcannot relieve, fast and pray. When I pray, Iinclude the names of persons who come tomind. For all I know, they need help and myprayer intercedes for them.

To love God is to open my mind to HisWord in the Scriptures every day. In timesof trouble or in sickness, God tells me:

Dont let your heart be troubledTrustme (Jn 14:1). He is a never failing help.He is my stronghold, my refuge, my Godin whom I trust! (Ps 91:2). Because theycling to me, I will rescue them, says the

Lord. I will protect those who know myname. When they call to me, I will answer;in times of trouble I will be with them; I willdeliver and honor them. I will satisfy themwith long life and show them my salvation.(Ps 91:14-16). Gods word is truly my light.Through His word, He gives me direction, consolation, enlightenment and assurancethat He is with me all the time.

We love our neighbor by openingourselves to the Word made flesh in ourneighbors need, by opening our heartsto family, friends and even strangers. Itake time to phone or text a friend. Whoknows God sends me to comfort myfriend in time of distress.

A week ago, I received a phone call

from my former grade 6 pupil whois now a civil engineer, residing inDavao City. What a great surprise! His call truly made my day! I taketime to send lowers or sendsomething to eat to cheer up a

friend. What a happy thought! Mylove towards people is measuredby the free time I dedicate to them.

A boy takes time to visit hisgirlfriend to show his love forher. A mother prepares deliciousmeals for her family because sheloves them. A father of a familygoes home directly to dedicate histime to his wife and children. Ateacher spends hours to prepareher lessons because she loves herstudents. A basketball player takeshours to train with his team matesto show his love and support for

the team. A doctor solicitouslytakes care of his patients, even inthe middle of the night. In return,he may sometimes receive eggsand chicken for his ministrations.A priest prepares his homily wellto draw his lock closer to God.

Our lawmakers would dowell to check many of our laws,

rules, and regulations whether these arebased on love. If they are not they shouldbe changed or be not approved into law atall. Does abortion show love for a humanbeing in the mothers womb? How abouteuthanasia? You shall not kill. Does the

murderer stop to think of the loneliness hecauses in the hearts of the murdered mansfamily and relatives? You shall not steal. Ilike the commercial on TV about the boywho returns the extra change he receivesfrom the cashier.

This commandment of love iswholeheartedly demanding and concrete.Let me share with you a classic example of awidow who loved much.

This happened in one of the suburbs ofMexico City. A chapel was being enlargedto accommodate thousands of people wholocked to the Church on Sundays. In the

midst of the work, the priest-in-chargereceived a visitor from a neighboring

paghangop sini.

Indi sila makapangayo

sang Bunyag kon una anay wala sila siningginasugoran sang pagtuo.

You shall love the Lord, your God withall your heart, and your neighbor as

yourself. What can be more challenging than

e message of the Gospel we have today?e Lord has eloquently taught us how toe Him and our neighbors.

Relecting upon this Gospel, I was ledask myself the following questions:

How did I show love to peoplepecially those who are sick and already, asking for my time and presence to

ve lunch or dinner with them or just visiteir house? Have I fully forgiven thoseople who hurt me or inlicted terriblen in my life? How do I relate with them?I have already forgiven them, why isthat sometimes I ind myself avoidingm? How do I treat parishioners seekinghelp? Do I have pure motivations? Am Itivated by love? Am I fair in showing or

giving love to people? In other words, our Gospel for today

led me to examine myself on where I amright now as a disciple of Christ in terms of

loving people and think of what I can stilldo so that I can really be a loving personlike Jesus.

I believe this is also the invitation foryou. May I invite you, amidst your busyschedule, to ind time in reading and re-reading the Holy Gospel today, allowing thewords of the Gospel to touch and scrutinizeyour heart, lead you to prayer, and moveyou to live out the Word of this Gospel sothat you may progress in pastoral charity.

Unless we engage ourselves in honestand sincere soul-searching and ind outwhere are we right now in terms of lovingGod and others, we may ind it dificultto discern ways and means to improveourselves and become more holy, more

loving, more compassionate, and morecommitted to live out the ways of Gods love

Lets make the words from the B ook ofPsalms as our own prayer:

Probe me O God and know my heart;try me and know my thoughtsSee if my way is crooked and lead me in

the way of old.Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting

way. (Ps. 139, 23)As I, together with my 9 brothers,

celebrate today our 5th OrdinationAnniversary, please be one with us inthanking the Lord for the gift of thepriesthood. Five years ago, we wereordained at St. Clements Church. Pleasepray for our holy perseverance. Maywe be sustained to become priests whoare so deeply in love with God and withothers. May we become priests until theend of our life.

As I open my eyesI start to realizeHow Ive gone so far awayLiving my life each and every day.

It all begins when he gave me this life,A tough journey to driveIn the worlds endless roads to walkIve asked for Whom can I gain strength andtalk?

All of a sudden, I saw the lightGiving me a sign to start the lightWithout any questionThe escapade started and went in manydirections.

I looked at the right sideSeeing the people so peaceful and gloriiedTreating one another with reverencePraying to acknowledge His presence.

Looking at the leftAstonished as I am, darkness creptBut I see my fellow people living life incruelty,Ruled by money and without unity.

Disappointed as I am, I blinked many timesAll I see is theyve gone into drugs, smokingand all types of crimesThey do these without fearSadly, I saw His face illed with tears.

I stand and pauseRealizing this is my purposeA challenge to pursueTo make a change and bring something new.

I call their attentionTo be part of the solution,I preach His words and goodness,They listened with their eyes full ofhappiness.

The Gospel givesus inspiration to love and serveGod. This is the motivationwhich invigorated us after thechoir formation given by Rev.Fr. Nathaniel Galgo Gentizon, last Sunday, October 12, 2014.

Our formation startedwith the Holy Sacriice of theMass at 8:00 a.m., after which,we proceeded to the Pius XIIbuilding for the formation. It started with a prayer by Fr.Nathaniel. Then he asked us:Why are we here? Why did wejoin the choir?

To give light to our quests,he discussed the three main

purposes why we are servingin the Church: to know God,to love Him, and to obey Him.When we accomplish these, weglorify Him.

According to Fr. Nathaniel,it is important for us to realizethat we are joining in the choirnot just because we want it butbecause the Lord called us tobe of service in the Church.

Then, Fr. Nathanielallowed us to share ourinsights and relections. As amember I a lso shared my own

Then one day I met someonein school. We had an interestingconversation. I opened up myselfto him. I told him of my wish toserve God by joining the choir. What a coincidence! He is a choirmember and he invited me tojoin their choir at every Saturdayafternoon Mass at the NationalShrine of Our Lady of Candles. Iaccepted the offer and now, I ama new member of the HKC family.I satisied my longing to serveGod. I found a new home and anew family. Even in my hectic

schedule I give time and effort toserve the Lord. As Rick Warrensays, Faithful Servants neverretire. You can retire from yourcareer, but you will never retirefrom serving God.

Our formation ended witha realization that we needto nurture and enhance our

relationship with God and withone another. We do not just singin the Mass. Most importantly,we pray with and for thewhole Christian Communitythroughout the Mass.

To all the youth who havea calling to serve the Lord, come and join the Choir oryouth ministry! Feel the loveof God and follow the will ofGod. Strengthen that vocationin you by serving the Church.Sing joyfully the Good News!Sing Alleluia!

modest sum from her knowingthat she could not often satisfyher own hunger, as she lived inextreme poverty. He knew thatthe money would be much morevaluable to her.

But she told the priest: Thismoney is neither mine nor yours. It belongs to God. I have given itto him for HIS house. The priestcould no longer resist her. At last,

he placed the folded bill in hisshirt pocket and thanked the oldwoman with a big hug.

Later, in his little ofice, thepriest unfolded the bill in orderto put it in the chapel buildingfund box. Then he discovered wellhidden in the interior of the foldsof the ifty-peso bill was anotherFIVE HUNDRED PESO bill!

Papal Visit 2015 Formation Modules now AvailableFr. Mickey Cardenas

To prepare the faithful for the PapalVisit on January 15-19, 2015, theArchdiocese of Manila is now offering

kits containing formation modules for thevisit of Pope Francis to the Philippines.

Each kit contains four sessionsdesigned to be given one module for eachof the four months leading up to January2015. These are 12 sessions designed as 1.5hour sessions for small group settings, suchas MKKs, MAMOS, LOMAS, church groups, schools, families, and other organizations.

While the diocese or parish can entrustthe program to any person or body thatcould disseminate and implement it, it isadvised that the facilitators be prepared forthese sessions and that they read throughthe materials beforehand.

The modules can also be used for SundayMasses to prepare for the Papal Visit. Priestsand liturgical coordinators are advised to

put it in an appropriate place in the liturgy, for example, before the entrance procession,in the homily, or after Communion.

To explain how the Formation Modulescame about, the Chairman of the CentralCommittee for the Papal Visit 2015, ManilaArchbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle,in his letter to Archbishops, Bishops andDiocesan Administrators, said that theCentral and Steering Committees of thePapal Visit had earlier agreed to formulatea set of relection-formation modules that
