In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” And he answers, “Master, I want to see.” Let us ask Jesus for the grace to “see” our brothers and sisters who are poor and lonely. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy to families, providing food, monies for utility, rent and other bills. God Bless You!

Send your Spirit into my heart and mind. Enlighten me with your wisdom, that I may come to know today where you are calling me in life. Give me the strength today

I make this prayer through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

As you all know, the sound system at St. John the Evangelist has been a nuisance from the beginning. Anyone with any hearing impediments will tell you that “Father Mike gives the best homilies, because I can’t hear them any way.” The system was never suitable for the space it was intended to service. We have had on going issues with the system. Now, I am pleased to announce that we are entering the final stage of the sound system upgrades and repairs. This has been a long and daunting process. Some of you have already generously oSered donations, which has helped prepare and sustain the sound system for our next step. New speakers are set to be installed. The new speakers will provide the optimum sound for hearing while seated in the pews. If you find yourself called to oSer a donation; it would be greatly appreciated. We have met our CSA goals and we are keeping our mortgage up to date, thanks to your generosity. Donations can be dropped in the collection with an envelope marked “Sound System”. Thank you in advance and “we can’t wait to hear from you”

As Michigan returns to a more normal lifestyle, COVID-19 related liturgical protocols could be retained by local pastors. Pastors should be conscious that any protocols they retain should be seen as extraordinary measures for extraordinary times. Parishes/Families of Parishes should create a timeline as to when any of their parish/family protocols will expire.

1. The Archdiocesan-wide directive to wear face-coverings and social distance has expired. Each pastor/In Solidum team should establish a protocol for their parish(es)/Family of Parishes based upon local conditions (e.g., a pastor/team may: establish an area where social distancing continues to be observed, direct the return of choirs, institute the resumption of the presentation of gifts, retain sanitization/face covering surrounding the distribution of Holy Communion).

2. A reminder that clergy may, may, may, may, if they wish, continue to use separate Chalices or to receive the Precious Blood by intinction.

Question: Question: Question: Question: I have a friend who receives communion, but who I know for a fact is in a state of mortal sin. Should I tell our priest? Is it my responsibility to say something?

Answer: Answer: Answer: Answer: While we may always want to do what is best for our friends and family members, we have a responsibility to respect their privacy and their conscience. In its reflections on the Eighth Commandment (“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor”), the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury. [One] becomes guilt: -of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without su9cient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor; -of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who do not know them; of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them” (no. 2477). We will never truly know what is in a person’s mind, heart, and soul; only God knows those things. We should, of course, take our concerns to God and entrust the person about whom we are concerned to God’s grace and mercy. If we have concerns about the spiritual wellbeing of someone with whom we are close, we should go to the person themselves and talk about our fears and concerns. Unless it is a case of abuse or endangerment (which we have a moral and even legal responsibility to report to the appropriate authorities), we ultimately do not have the freedom to share another’s persons faults or sins, however good we think our intentions might be.

PRAYER & WORSHIP

8 Saint Cornelius | Saint John the Evangelist

It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshiping him in his Body and Blood. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. We ask Jesus to unite Himself with us. The basic elements of An Act of Spiritual Communion are an Act of Faith, an Act of Love, and a desire to receive Christ, and invitation for him to come into our heart.

My Jesus, My Jesus, My Jesus, My Jesus, I believe that YouI believe that YouI believe that YouI believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, I love You above all things,I love You above all things,I love You above all things,I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul, and I desire to receive You into my soul, and I desire to receive You into my soul, and I desire to receive You into my soul, Since I cannot at this moment Since I cannot at this moment Since I cannot at this moment Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, receive You sacramentally, receive You sacramentally, receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, come at least spiritually into my heart, come at least spiritually into my heart, come at least spiritually into my heart, I embrace You as if You were already there I embrace You as if You were already there I embrace You as if You were already there I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. and unite myself wholly to You. and unite myself wholly to You. and unite myself wholly to You. WHAT IS SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

BLESSED CHIARA “LUCE” BADANO

Reprinted (excerpted) from Catholic Current, copyright © [year of original publication], United

States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, D.C. All rights reserved.

FEAST DAY OCTOBER 29th Chiara “Luce” Badano was born in 1971, an only child to parents who had waited long for her arrival. As a child, she was bright, friendly, athletic, and had many friends. At age 9, she joined the Focolare movement and was very inspired by this spirituality. She was struck with cancer at age 17, but never lost her bright spirit. After a two-year battle with the disease, she entered eternal rest on October 7, 1990. Her last words were a message of hope: “Be

happy, because I am!” She was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. “I think you all know that on Saturday September 25th, in Rome, an Italian girl named Chiara, Chiara Badano, was beatified. I invite you to get to know her: her life was short, but it’s a wonderful message. Chiara was born in 1971 and died in 1990, because of an incurable illness. Nineteen years full of life, of love, of faith. Two years, the last ones, also filled with pain and suSering, but always in love and light, a light that shone around her, and that came from within: from her heart filled with God! How can this be? How can a girl of 17, 18 years live a suSering like this, without any kind of human hope, spreading love, serenity, peace, faith? Obviously, this is a grace from God, but this grace was also prepared and accompanied by human collaboration: the collaboration of Chiara herself, certainly, but also of her parents and her friends.” — Pope Benedict XVI, Palmero, October 3, 2010

A Prayer to St. Joseph,

Defender of Life

Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel,

you lovingly took Mary into your home. As God’s humble servant, you guided

the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own

son in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland for the

safety of both Mother and Child.

We praise God that as their faithful protector, you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to you. May your example inspire us also to

welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most precious gift of life.

Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life —especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to

do the will of God in all things. Amen.
