Actually, the healthier you become, the healthier the business will be. A few years ago, I came across Eat To Live (Joel Fuhrman, MD), a book with an incredibly important quality of life message. Most likely, I shared some of the ideas from the book in a previous Supply Line article. As I am reading it for a second time, it is impossible to avoid dwelling on the roughly 4,725,000 lives that were lost globally over a 21-month peri- od to Covid 19 and the Delta variant. This was a tragedy unlike any I have encountered. If you lost a loved one, you have my deepest sympathy. Those most at risk from dying from Covid were the elderly and those with underlying con- ditions that included obesity, diabetics, immune deficiencies and cancers. The main les- son of Eat To Live is to provide a road map to optimal health and weight loss by consum- ing a diet with a high nutrient-per calorie ratio. Considering that > one-third of the US pop- ulation is obese, I cannot help but think that many lives could have been saved if our pop- ulation had been healthier. When it comes to food and drink, I know what I should consume but often lack the will power to make healthy choices. After finishing a fulfilling meal and then being tempted by a favorite dessert, I will likely make a lousy decision and eat or perhaps binge on desert; behavior that is sheer lunacy considering that these excessive sugars and fats just might prematurely end my heartbeat. BTW, there is nothing wrong with an occasional splurge on a burger, fries or a sugary and fat-laden dessert but to make these unhealthy choices more than a couple of times a week or worse yet, a daily occurrence drives up the likeli- hood of chronic, serious ailments including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and numerous cancers. Some friends with obvious risk factors acknowledge that a significant health issue could surface and disrupt their quality of life. Then, they blow this it off knowing there is health insurance and a drug or procedure to deal with almost anything. We are grateful for treat- ments but need to know that every prescription has a side effect, procedures are expen- sive and as we encounter the perils of aging and likely to be on more prescriptions, we must remember that some scripts cannot be taken together. Bottom line: It pays to avoid having to take prescriptions or undergo risky procedures. The good news is some condi- tions can be reversed through a healthier diet. Continued on page 3...

From The Co-founder From time to time, the topics in this article shift from focusing on the Electric Supply team
to best-in-class business practices to something even more important: Your wellbeing.
Because of the relationships with so many of you, my wish is for you to be healthy, happy
and positioned to enjoy a long, vibrant life. Hence, October is all about your wellbeing.
Actually, the healthier you become, the healthier the business will be.
A few years ago, I came across Eat To Live (Joel Fuhrman, MD), a book with an incredibly
important quality of life message. Most likely, I shared some of the ideas from the book in
a previous Supply Line article. As I am reading it for a second time, it is impossible to
avoid dwelling on the roughly 4,725,000 lives that were lost globally over a 21-month peri-
od to Covid 19 and the Delta variant. This was a tragedy unlike any I have encountered.
If you lost a loved one, you have my deepest sympathy.
Those most at risk from dying from Covid were the elderly and those with underlying con-
ditions that included obesity, diabetics, immune deficiencies and cancers. The main les-
son of Eat To Live is to provide a road map to optimal health and weight loss by consum-
ing a diet with a high nutrient-per calorie ratio. Considering that > one-third of the US pop-
ulation is obese, I cannot help but think that many lives could have been saved if our pop-
ulation had been healthier.
When it comes to food and drink, I know what I should consume but often lack the will
power to make healthy choices. After finishing a fulfilling meal and then being tempted by
a favorite dessert, I will likely make a lousy decision and eat or perhaps binge on desert;
behavior that is sheer lunacy considering that these excessive sugars and fats just might
prematurely end my heartbeat. BTW, there is nothing wrong with an occasional splurge
on a burger, fries or a sugary and fat-laden dessert but to make these unhealthy choices
more than a couple of times a week or worse yet, a daily occurrence drives up the likeli-
hood of chronic, serious ailments including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and numerous
cancers.
Some friends with obvious risk factors acknowledge that a significant health issue could
surface and disrupt their quality of life. Then, they blow this it off knowing there is health
insurance and a drug or procedure to deal with almost anything. We are grateful for treat-
ments but need to know that every prescription has a side effect, procedures are expen-
sive and as we encounter the perils of aging and likely to be on more prescriptions, we
must remember that some scripts cannot be taken together. Bottom line: It pays to avoid
having to take prescriptions or undergo risky procedures. The good news is some condi-
tions can be reversed through a healthier diet.

From The Co-founder, continued...
As early as almost two decades ago, >300,000 annual deaths in the US were a result of
obesity; most of those deaths were preventable. Obesity frequently results in depression
and hypertension which increases the risk of death in all ages and in almost every ethnic
and gender group. As a culture, Americans tend to take pride in today’s fast-paced society.
Being on the run has contributed to unhealthy nutrition. If we are in a hurry, who has time
for nutrition?
Our grocery stores are packed with highly processed or sugar-laden foods that are market-
ed and packaged as “healthy”. This BS should be a crime because it can and does kill.
Unsuspecting consumers are led to believe they are making healthy choices. The best food
choices are those consumed with little or better yet, no processing. Enriched” white bread
has precious little nutrition value. The same holds true for all types of cheese and even so-
called healthy (wink, wink) cereals. Steele cut oats are in a more natural state than tradi-
tional oatmeal. Cinnamon, apples, peaches, blue berries and raw nuts toppings provide
excellent additional nutrition.
Fuhrman states that his formula, “Health = Nutrients/Calories” defines the nutrient density of
a diet. Fuhrman goes on to state “Your key to permanent weight loss is to eat predominate-
ly those foods that have a high proportion of nutrients (noncaloric food factors including vita-
mins, minerals, fibers and phytochemicals) to calories (carbs, fats and proteins).
This book is not about counting calories. Rather, it is more about understanding various
food groups such as fruits, leafy greens and other veggies and adding them to your diet.
Fuhrman states that studies show as you consume larger and larger portions of health-
supporting, high nutrient foods, your appetite for low-nutrient foods (chips, crackers, pasta,
white rice and other highly processed foods) decreases as you gradually lose your addiction
to them.
The above contains just a few take-a-ways from this book. I would be remiss if I did not
acknowledge that many devastating diseases are hereditary and will hit some people in
spite of healthy lifestyles. I firmly believe each of us should take steps to reduce the risk
factors that are within our control through diet, exercise and adequate sleep.
If you are interested in reading Eat To Live, please let me know. I will be happy to give a
copy to the first ten teammates who request a copy*. If you take me up on this offer, I will
want to hear your feedback regarding your take-a-ways. I hope that regardless of whether
you use this book or devise your own healthy lifestyle plan, you will enjoy a long, vibrant,
happy and healthy life. Each of you deserves nothing less.
After all, you are the best!
