New column starting June 2019: “ Chatur Chachi” to solve all
your worries The editorial team at Spectrum understand that some
people feel scared or ashamed of asking others for advice, hence we
have decided to introduce a free advice section “Chatur
Chachi”.
If you have a crucial decision to make or want to discuss a
personal matter; manners, style, kids, relationships, etc. Chatur
Chachi probably has all your answers and she may knowledgeably
answer your questions. (And, unlike your REAL Chachi, she won’t
judge you.) How do you ask the advice of the Chatur Chachi? Simply
send us your questions on [email protected] by the 30th of
every month and your Chatur Chachi would try and answer your
questions in the next Spectrum edition. And if you want to be
anonymous, we won’t divulge your name and would slightly modify the
question grammatically to protect your identity. Send in your
questions and I am sure Chatur Chachi won’t disappoint you.
PS
Chatur Chachi does not offer legal advice.
Chatur Chachi loves children, but she can only reply to
questions asked by readers over 18.
Chatur Chachi reserves the right to decline to answer any
letter.
Sometimes you just need someone to listen…….

Gardening tips from Shabana
Hello once again, after a short hiatus I am back… this time with
some Gyan for the season. Officially its spring, but we are yet to
experience the actual season. Spring is the season when I get
active as I indulge in some serious gardening; right from making
compost at home to growing herbs, vegetables and fruits. I love
experimenting and yes, I am not scared of my failures as they teach
me what to avoid and move on. My plants are loving, kind and
forgiving, they help me,
give me crucial hints and I analyse them just like a detective
to find the right solution. Together we prosper, they grow, bear
flowers and fruits and I just enjoy their company. My plants listen
to music, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh are their favourites, we
communicate using all the senses… gardening for me is very
therapeutic.
I shall take you on this gardening journey with me and if you
have any queries you can send me an email on
[email protected] and I can address them either by email
or will discuss the problem in the next Spectrum issue.
I would like to begin with the most neglected aspect -
“SOIL”.
There is a simple formula; healthy soil = healthy plants
If the soil is weak, your plants will also be weak. Weak plants
have poor production, fewer flowers and fewer and low-quality
fruits; you may have spent a lot of money on buying good quality
organic seeds or saplings and spent quality time nurturing the
plants, but it is all a waste if the soil is poor.
It is not difficult to make compost at home; you do not need
anything; you just need to know what things in your kitchen can do
the trick.
Let’s start with simple and easy to implement things; Many of us
consume eggs and bananas. Stop discarding the eggshells and banana
peels.
Bananas are indeed healthy for humans, but they also benefit
many different plants. Just busy a banana peel in a hole alongside
the rose plant or any flower bed into the top layer of the soil.
Banana peel provides potassium which is needed for the plants for
growth.
Egg shells are a powerhouse of nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosphorous
and Calcium. Plants need lots of calcium and the soil gets depleted
of calcium very soon, especially flower and fruit-bearing plants.
The best solution is to simply crush the eggshells (even boiled
eggshells) and sprinkle them on the soil. This can be done every
day.
Hope you will implement these simple tricks, more tips in the
next edition of Spectrum. HAPPY GARDENING.
