This is such a great time of year with the beautiful Fall colors, cool weather, perhaps a trip to the apple orchard or cider mill, and fun Fall celebrations! For me, the best part about Fall is the fact that our students are fully involved in their learning. I have had the great pleasure of visiting all of our classrooms, and our teachers are creating engaging lessons for our students. Children are using technology to enhance their learning, they are involved in high· level thinking activities, they are working collaboratively with classmates, they are participating in discussions that allow them to demonstrate their learning, and they are creating projects that show a deep knowledge of all subject areas. Our classrooms are very busy, full of learning! We have several fun activities planned this month for our Havel community. We have fire truck visits planned for our kindergarten students, our Sixth graders will be going to camp on October 12 th , and our HVL meeting on October 10 th , bus evacuation practice, our 2 nd crew meeting and school wide tie dye activity, our 6 th grader instrument fitting, bagel days, our fun run rewards assembly, and more! Finally, we will have our traditional Halloween parade, outside weather permitting or inside if it is raining, on October 31 st . Please see inside the newsletter for more information on the Halloween Parade. Our Havel staff and HVL were so excited to welcome many new faces to our September meeting! We are looking forward to seeing many parents at our next meeting on October 10 th at 7:00 p.m. in the Science Room. Free child care will be provided for the evening meeting. We really need your help in order to continue all of the fun and educational programs our volunteer group provides for our students. Enjoy this wonderful month of October and all of the beauty it brings. Principal, Havel Elementary

Principal’s Message Happy October! This is such a great time of year with the beautiful Fall

Havel was proud to have our District Superintendent,
Dr. Christine Johns, ride with some of our children on the
first day of school! Not even the
rain could dampen the spirits of
the children and families on this
special occasion!

Dismissal
12:04
We know that Halloween is a very exciting time that many children look forward to each and every year. By working together, we can make Halloween a safe and happy experience for all of our Havel Hawks. When shopping and planning for the perfect Halloween costume with your child, please avoid the following: masks, weaponry (including toys), blood, gore, overly scary costumes, and any character from a rated "R" movie: (ex. Scary Clowns, Fred-dy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th , Michael Myers from Halloween, the Scream ghost mask, etc)
Students whose costumes do not adhere to these guidelines will not be permitted to wear the costume and will have to return home to change into appropriate attire. Thank you in advance for your respect of our preschool through sixth grade student population.
On Tuesday, October 31, please remember to send students to school dressed in their costumes. Our half day schedule (dismissal is at 12:04 p.m.) does not allow for "costume time." The Halloween parade will start at 10:45 a.m. outside (weather permitting). Please line up and gather around the cones on the play pad outside of the kindergarten classroom doors.
ATTENDANCE
When your child will be absent from school,
you must contact the HAVEL
ATTENDANCE LINE AT
586-797-5299
to leave a message on voice mail. Calls may
be placed at any time, day or night. When
placing your call, please clearly state your
child’s last and first name, teacher’s name,
reason and length of absence.
TARDY ARRIVAL
UCS Board Policy dictates that if your child
arrives after the start of the school date (9:00
AM) the parent must enter the office with the
child and sign the tardy student in. EARLY DISMISSAL
Students will not be called down until the
parent/authorized individual arrives at the
school. Student must be signed out.
DISMISSAL CHANGES
We know plans and activities for your children can change suddenly, but we appreciate you
planning ahead for changes in your child’s routine. Before your child leaves in the morning please
make sure he/she knows if they are taking the bus home, are walking home or are scheduled to go to
SACC after school. You must contact the office with any changes by 3:30 p.m. We cannot
guarantee your child will get the change after this time.
CLASSROOM
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
The teachers and staff at Havel strongly support and encourage the recognition of a
child's birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life
that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children
spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers.
However, while there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s
birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Havel will not include food treats.
There are several compelling reasons for us to eliminate the practice of parents/
guardians providing food treats in school as part of their child’s birthday celebration.
1. Conflict with healthy eating messages.
2. Collectively, time taken to distribute and consume birthday food treats can
significantly reduce instruction time in the classroom.
3. Regardless of care taken, a student with a food allergy could have a severe
allergic reaction to an ingredient used in preparation of a birthday food treat
or be inadvertently excluded from the celebration because the treat was not
safe for them to consume.
As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank
you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important
events and achievements.
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated
in the classroom.
Ms. Barel
BEING ON TIME IS IMPORTANT
It is important that your child arrives at school on time. School starts at 9:00 am. Teachers begin
their outside supervision of students at 8:50 am which is the time your child should be arriving. In
the past, we have had too many children walking or being dropped off at school before 8:30 am. If
your child needs to be at school before 8:50 you must fill out a School Age Child Care form, and
begin using this service.
School Age Child Care
SACC is available to Utica Community
Schools K-6th grade. Morning session is
available at 7:00 am until the start of school
After school is available at the end of the
school day until 6:00 pm. Cost is $4.50 per
hour, with a minimum charge of 1 hour.
Call for more information at 586-797-6980
Monday—Friday 8:00 am—4:30 pm.
LOST AND FOUND
Please mark all of your child’s
belongings with his/her name—
especially jackets, back packs and tennis shoes
(which are required for physical education) and
boots. If your child loses something during the
school year, please have them check the Lost and
Found box located in the hallway by the janitors
office. All articles not claimed at the end of the
year will be placed in the DAV bin located in the
parking lot.
