It invited everyone outside. It seems that winter has now passed for another year and “Spring has sprung”! Spring means new life in the garden – lawns are greening and there are many bright colours with the flowers. The sun shining certainly seems to give rise to positive energy. This evening we welcome David and Val Slater and Chris Houlson. Both Chris and David have made goods for our Annual Raffle. We thank them both for all of their efforts – Chris for the beautiful Quilt and David for the wonderful Doll’s House. This will be drawn this evening – we trust that the winners will be very pleased with their “booty” and that we have raised a substantial sum for our Service Projects. Unfortunately, we do not have our regular October Meeting Women of Achievement Awards. As we were late in getting the applications out, we did not receive any nominations. Next year we must make a concerted effort for this. I give my apologies for the Fashion Parade on Saturday October 21 st . I am sure that it will be a success. Past member, Julie Sinclair and I visited there recently and I was able to get everything that I went for plus another pair of three quarter pants in grey and a delightful tee shirt that I can wear in the evening. I must say that I really like the Jillian pants of both lengths. At our Board Meeting on Thursday night, we decided that we would change our Agenda for the Dinner Meeting. Any feedback on the change would be appreciated. For the next meeting, we will have written reports from the Committee chairs. I will also be away for the November Meeting – I am travelling to South America for just over five weeks so I am sure that I will experience many new experiences, foods and cultures. New UN Trust Fund initiative in Moldova aims to protect elderly women from domestic violence

Date: Monday, September 18, 2017

HelpAge International, in partnership with Gender Centru, launched a 3-year initiative which

aims to inform elderly women in Moldova about their rights and protect them from domestic

violence. The project "Ensuring Gender and Age Dimensions of Human Rights are realized in

Moldova,” is supported by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust

Fund).

The project aims to increase elderly women’s knowledge about their rights, encourage them

to access support services, and work with civil society to mobilise eight communities in the

A group of women from Donici village, center of Moldova, who will be involved in advocating for women’s rights in their community.

“Violence against women is wide spread in Moldova. According to a 2014 study by HelpAge, every third

elderly person in Moldova has experienced violence. Two thirds of them are women. Every second

elderly person has reported psychological violence, more than a third have been through economic

violence, and every sixth have experienced physical violence.

“Abuse against elderly women is a hidden issue, women don’t speak about it. Our goal is to see that

every elderly woman knows her rights and that they don’t accept domestic violence as being normal,”

said Tatiana Sorocan from HelpAge Moldova at the launch of the project in Chisinau on 12 September.

“Women are the ones who bring change. In every community there are happy families, and elderly

women who overcame violence. We have to identify and expand these solutions, “said Corneliu Eftodi,

Programme Officer at UN Women in Moldova.

"Ensuring Gender and Age Dimensions of Human Rights are realized in Moldova” project will be

realized between 2017-2020. This is the third project funded by UN Trust Fund in Moldova, with

previous projects implemented in 2000 and 2008. The UN Trust Fund is the only global grant-making

Most elderly women keep silent about

the abuse that they go through. It was

difficult for them to open up and tell us

their stories. This hurts us all. Elderly

persons have built our country and

have raised and educated new

generations. We owe them a lot,” said

Claudia Cirja, who has worked as a

volunteer to help elderly women,

survivors of violence in Carabetovca,

Moldova has signed The Council of

Europe Convention on preventing and

combating violence against women and

domestic violence (Istanbul

Convention). The next step for the

country is to ratify it.

“In 2017 Moldova has signed the

Istanbul Convention. This motivates us,

in the Government, to continue working

on combating violence against women,”

OBJECTS OF ZONTA INTERNATIONAL

To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of

women at the global and local level through service and advocacy.

To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world

fellowship of members.

To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs,

and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities,

their nations, and the world.

Wherever your country of birth, whatever your faith or creed, give thanks for the meal we share

tonight in Zonta fellowship. But remember too those who have had no food today; not with

guilt that we have so much, but with hope that through Zonta service they too may come

to share the same in peace and harmony.
