Kathy Parks, Membership Chairman-Council PTA, [email protected] hope everyone has gotten off to a strong start this year. Judging by the great

turnout we had for Membership Chairman training at our LeaderPalooza event, Garland ISD PTAs are definitely Backing the Future. I’m so pleased with the turnout we had.

If your membership chair is not receiving emails from me, that means I don’t have their contact information. Please send me their email address so I can add them to my contact list.

Upcoming dates to remember:• September 30 ........... Early bird deadline • October 15 ............... Fall Membership deadline

To be considered an active PTA by the state and national organization, you must submit at least 20 memberships to Texas PTA by this date. Our Council goal is a membership increase for every local PTA and PTSA

of at least three new members. I know you can do this. Heck. You could accomplish this with just one family!

As always, I am here if you need me to answer questions.

Don’t forget: Membership is year round.

DUES  AND  DONATION  NOTICE  Garland ISD Council of PTAs Dues: Garland ISD Council dues are $50 for each unit, payable no later than October 15 as stated in Council Bylaws. These dues help provide services for all the locals. These services include (but are not limited to) training, awards and recognitions, newsletter, and other services as may be needed. Since all GISD locals are located within our council area, they are required to pay dues to be eligible for participation in any Council, Area, or National PTA programs.

DONATIONS SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Through local scholarship donations, the Council is able to award college scholarships to

deserving seniors at each GISD high school who plan to enter the teaching profession. We ask that each local include a donation of at least $25 for the scholarship fund.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY FUND: The Medical Emergency Fund was established to assist students whose parents of guardians cannot provide professional health care. All medical referrals are made through the school nurse and approved by the Garland ISD Coordinator of Health Services. Examples of the needs for which the fund is designated are prescriptions, doctor’s visits and prescription eyeglasses. We have a healthy balance in this fund and for the 2014-15 school year. Therefore, we ask that your PTA redirect the money you would have contributed to this fund into larger contribution to one or both of the other two funds.

SCHOOL SUPPLY FUND: Each year there are many students in Garland ISD who start school without the necessary supplies to perform their required tasks. The school supply fund was established to help purchase school supplies for these students. A box of supplies is delivered to as many GISD elementary campuses as funds allow before the school year begins. Only necessary supplies such as crayons, glue, notebook paper, pens, pencils, rulers, scissors, spiral notebooks and folders are purchased. After the first day of school, supplies are delivered to individual schools that make requests. We ask that each local include a donation of at least $25 for the school Supply Fund. Please send two checks, one for dues and one for total donations. If you have any questions regarding dues and/or donations, please contact Suellen Atteberry at [email protected]

GISD COUNCIL OF PTAs

Monthly Outstanding PTA Activity Guidelines Sharon Wainscott, Council President, [email protected]

During the school year, the Council PTA sponsors a monthly “Outstanding PTA” awards program. The

program not only allows local PTAs to let their light shine and earn recognition for their work, but it also allows us to share successful strategies and ideas with the other local PTAs in the school district.

Entries  can  be  mailed,  delivered  in  person  or  emailed.  The  guidelines  are  pretty  simple:   Complete the Entry Cover Form with general contact information for your PTA and your campus, and

include with your entry.

Write a description of your PTA’s activity that includes the information listed on the Outstanding PTA Award Application attached.

A maximum of 300 words, handwritten or typed will be accepted.

Please do not use your PTA name within the text (all PTA names are covered for judging)

If you have copies of flyers, programs, photos, etc. to support your entry, please feel free to include. However, do not send “one of a kind” items, as they will not be returned.

Your PTA may submit only one entry per month - but you are not limited to a timeframe for any given entry. For example, a program from the end of one school year can be submitted at the beginning of the next school year.

Judges will consider the originality of idea, participation of parents, staff and students, as well as community involvement. Keep the Objects of PTA in mind as you plan the entry.

During the annual PTA Spring Luncheon, scheduled for May 15, 2015, the Council will present “Outstanding PTA of the Year” awards. Your PTA must enter at least three (3) monthly contests during the 2014-15 school year to be eligible to submit an entry for the Outstanding PTA of the Year.
