Remember when you listened, sang, and danced to the great old tunes of the 1920's through 1940's? Has it been a while? Come to the Meriden Public Library on Friday, October 4 at 2:00 pm and let the Survivors Swing Band revive those memories for you. A 7-piece professional jazz band, based in Connecticut, the Survivors Swing Band plays the classic melodies from an era gone by--hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era-- plus many of the wonderful melodies from the two decades that followed. The "Big Bands" played this music with a high degree of rigid orchestration. The Survivors render it with a greater tilt towards improvisation, thus giving each pass at a tune somewhat of a new flavor while still keeping true to the original melodies. Funding for this program is provided by the Meriden Foundation and the Friends of the Meriden Public Library. This program is free and all are welcome. They are a profes- sional team which works with historical societies throughout the Northeast conducting paranormal pro- grams for them to assist in raising attention and historical awareness of their properties. Author Katina Makris will

be visiting Meriden Public

Library on Saturday,

October 5 at 2:00 pm in the

Griffin Room.

Ms. Makris will discuss her

book Out of the Woods

which details the struggles

she experienced before

finally being diagnosed with

Lyme disease.

A Classical Homeopath and

popular newspaper health

care columnist, Makris

discusses healing spiritually

and emotionally when deal-

ing with a chronic illness like

Lyme.

The book also includes

information on the most

current tests for Lyme dis-

ease.

There will be books

available for purchase. This

program is free and all are

welcome. It is funded by the

Meriden Foundation and the

Friends of the Meriden

Public Library.

Kathryn Orzech will read a

sampling of true ghost sto-

ries, psychic dreams and vi-

sions, and a chapter from her

novel: Premonition of Terror. A

Q&A session will follow.

Back in the 1990s, Meriden

native Kathryn Orzech had a

dream she should create a

website for ordinary people

to share paranormal experi-

ences. Dreamwatch.com has

since collected hundreds of

plain-talk personal accounts

of premonitions and psychic

dreams, and encounters with

spirits of family, friends, and

even pets returning from the

hereafter. Orzech admits, “I

was shocked when people

actually visited the site.”

Weil will be performing his

program Poetry with a Touch

of Mid-life Insanity on

Wednesday, October 23 at

6:30 pm in the Griffin

Room.

A small business owner

(barely stands 5’5”), Andy is

f r e q u e n t e d i t o r i a l

contributor, musician, and

certified, die-hard cynic. His

writings and topics range

from mid-life crisis and old

age to computer-addicted

dot-com America.

Weil performs for schools,

a s s i s t e d - l i v i n g a n d

retirement communities,

l ibrar ies , Tupperware

parties, divorce proceed-

ings, new parking meter

installations, and even for

relatives he intensely

dislikes.

He also facilitates poetry

writing groups/clinics at

many of the area’s

retirement communities as

be hosting College4Less’

College Financial Planning

Night on Monday, October

7 at 6:00 pm in the Griffin

Room. College4Less is an

independent CT firm

offering guidance and

assistance to parents and

students to better position

themselves to get into the

colleges of their choice at the

least possible cost. Topics to

be discussed include the

FAFSA form and the CSS

Profile form along with other

important information. This

On Tuesday, October 15 at

6:30 pm in the Griffin

Room, college funding

experts W. Tom Polowy,

MS and Vincent Winans of

LPL Financial in Hartford,

will be speaking about

college funding strategies

and financial aid options.

In this program titled “How

to Pay for College” Tom

and Vince will discuss how

the financial aid system

works, what types of assis-

tance are available, and what

aid families can reasonably

expect to see.

They will discuss not only

traditional methods of

funding college but also a

number of creative ones.

The program will cover

various tips and pitfalls re-

lated to common college

savings plans such as 529s,

EE bonds, UGMA accounts

as well as a discussion of

how the economic melt-

down has affected college

investments, tuition costs,

and available aid.

Library Directors Report: A suggestion box in the lobby revealed that our library

patrons really appreciate the varied programs offered here. Some complained that they

didn’t get the newsletter soon enough to learn about early programs in the month. Karen

suggested the newsletters also include a box promoting the next month’s

upcoming programs. In addition the newsletter editors will work on getting the combined

newsletter out earlier.

The Friends approved funding to renew museum passes to the Harriet Beecher Stowe

house ($175) and Imagi-Nation in Bristol ($125) She also will receive $2910 from the

Meriden Foundation grant to fund a list of speakers, programs and musical events to be

offered by the library through the end of the year.

Bookstore: Book specials last month on creative ideas for holiday gifts and healthy eating

and fitness sold briskly so will be featured for another month. Also books by our most

popular horror authors will be highlighted for October through Halloween. June has

decorated the store for fall. It was noted that for the first time ever the 10 cent sales

exceeded $100 for the month.

Membership: Our current paid memberships for 2013 stand at 136. John Banks, one of

our founding members, is interested in helping to attract new members. John plans to set

up a membership table, with refreshments, at the book sale. We agreed that in the

November newsletter we will offer members a chance to renew their memberships for

next year before the end of this year for tax purposes.

Our $5-a-bag fall book sale will be set up on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 15 and 16,

and the sale be take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17–19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

in the Cook Reading Room with take down the following Monday. People willing to help on

any of these days may put their names on the signup sheet in the store. Books in the store

will sell at half price during the sale.

Mario Cavallo, long time member of the friends and past English teacher, will be on hand

the Saturday of the sale from 1 to 3 p.m. to sell and sign copies of his new poetry book,

“Shared Moments” and John Banks, one of the founding members of our Friends group, will

man a table seeking new members and offer refreshments.

Friends of the Month: June presented our “Friends of the Month” award for August to

our diligent SOBs (Sorters of Books). Lee Jurgot and Betty Masterson accepted the award

to be shared with long time sorter Nancy Alusitz and newcomer Maureen Purcell.
