    October 2013

For Lutheran Christians, October hasalways been a special month. Its finalday marks the birthday of our church.496 years ago on October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 theses

(statements for debate) on the door ofthe Castle Church in Wittenberg, Ger-many.

Thus began the Lutheran Reformation. It was a movement in which the HolySpirit powerfully proclaimed: We aresaved from sin by Gods grace alone, through faith in Christ alone, and byway of the Spirit-inspired Scripturesalone.

This October is also full of special ser-vices at St. Marks. From first day tolast, there is no normal service.(Interestingly enough, a few shortmonths ago, nothing special wasplanned.)

The 2nd, 5th, & 6th will have us celebrat-ing Lutheran education, as we listen toPastor Don Schultz from LakesideLutheran High School.

    October: a Special Month

The 9th, 12th, & 13th will have us con-sidering the work of our LutheranChristian congregation, as we hearfrom representatives from each of ourchurchs boards.

The 16th, 19th, & 20th will have us cele-brating Lutheran outreach, as we cele-brate with Pastor Mueller the 10th anni-versary of Watertowns RecreationOutreach Center.

The 23rd, 26th, & 27th will give us apeek at the next generation of Luther-an preachers. (Our congregation helpedgenerate six of them, who are in theirSeminary years).

Finally, we celebrate the LutheranReformation itself in services on Oc-tober 30th, and November 2nd & 3rd.

Fellow Lutheran Christians: See you inworship!

    - Pastor Walther

Pebbles from the ROC - Stewardship Page 3

    Pebbles From the ROC...

On December 3rd, 2003 our Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth opened its doors at 321 S.Water St. (colorful building just down from the library) and immediately enjoyed a constant flow of teens who

were mostly unchurched. Work on this unique mission and ministry had really begun four years earlier asmembers of St. Johns, St. Lukes, St. Marks, and Trinity began informally discussing the concept of a youthcenter.

In January of 2001, the congregations voted to form a task force (Watertown Youth Center Task Force) tostudy the possibility of a youth center. In April of 2003, the congregations voted to replace the task force witha board of directors made up of individuals from each of the four congregations. The Board then, in the nameof all four congregations, issued a Divine Call to Pastor Timothy Mueller who accepted and arrived in Water-town with his family in August of 2003. After many meetings, the City Planning Commission unanimouslyvoted to give the ROC use of the 321 S. Water St. building for a youth center. Neighbors who had previouslyopposed the youth center later came to love and appreciate it. During this 10th Anniversary year we will con-tinue to share history of THE ROC showing Gods blessings and how we arrived at owning our own building

    at 213 N. Third Street.

A ROC 10TH ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE will be held on Sunday, December 8th, from 12-3 p.m. Allare invited. Another goal for our10th Anniversary is for all of us to completely pay off ($13,000 remaining)

the building and remodeling. Thank you so much for your constant support and gifts. THE ROC has been awonderful mission for Christ, reaching out to over 2000 different teens over the TEN YEARS.

What little known ministry does youroffering support?

    Pastor Walther reports:

It was 1998. A little girl had turned 10over the summer. She had recently ar-rived from Mexico, along with herfamily. The little girl lived at the cor-ner of Sixth and Spring, here in Water-town. This brought her into contactwith folks from a church which had

recently begun Spanish Language ser-vices. Since she knew little English, she was put with her brother into sec-ond grade at the churchs school. Shewould advance a grade, and later grad-uate.

Last year she returned from Waterloo. Her son enrolled in our school: amongthe first of the second-generation stu-

dents from Spanish Language homes.A couple months ago, her other threechildren were baptized. She regularlyattends our Spanish Language services, along with her children.

She is Juana Pineda, your sister inChrist. Your support of your churchand school means that she and her fam-ily will someday accompany you toheavenly glory through faith in JesusChrist.

Where are we at on the operatingbudget?

Christian Doctrine: Natural & Revealed Knowledge of God

God teaches usthat he exists, that he is powerful and wise

and that he punishes sin.Since the creation of the worldGod's invisible qualities -- hiseternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, beingunderstood from what has beenmade (Romans 1:20). And:Gentiles show that the require-ments of the law are written ontheir hearts, their consciencesalso bearing witness, and theirthoughts now accusing, noweven defending them (Romans2:15).

Thats the natural knowledge ofGod. It is valuable, but it cannot

The Almighty God is infinitelysuperior to human beings in eve-

ry dimension! How, then, can weget to know him?

Well, first lets admit: There are

some things we will neverknow, but God does. The se-cret things belong to the Lordour God, but the things revealedbelong to us and to our childrenforever (Dt 29:29).

Still, there are things that Goddivulges to us about himselfaccording to natural knowledgeand revealed knowledge.

    By creation and by conscience:

The MessengerDeadline is the 15th of the month.

Information received AFTER that date is NOT guaranteed inclusion.

KEEPALL ARTICLES BRIEF : A PARAGRAPH OR TWO - NO page-long articles!

Articles, notices, etc., are only printed once - unless otherwise requested, andallarticles are subject

to modification by the editor. Special requests will be taken into consideration, however please un-

derstand that for various reasons and space, your request may not be honored.

save us. The revealed knowledgeof God is much more detailed,

and it does rescue us from hell.

    By Scripture: God reveals that

he has rescued us from our

sins through Jesus Christ. Thejailer at Philippi knew God bynatureand trembled. It wasonly by the proclamation ofGods Word that he learned:"Believe in the Lord Jesus, andyou will be saved" (Acts 16:31).

So, appreciate the naturalknowledge of God. But treasurehis revealed knowledge theScriptures! and especially Je-sus your Savior.

The Work of Our Pastors & Others: Baptisms at Saint Marks?

Spanish Outreach - Hospital Visits Page 5

Spanish Outreach...This past September was the 15th anniversary of the start ofour worship services, plus the beginning of another newschool year. Its an especially appropriate time to considerChrists blessings to our Spanish Language congregation.Below are some of the numbers.

108 is the approximate number of souls who are ourmembers. These are those who have been confirmed, plustheir baptized children. Nearly all of them were in worshipat some point in the past year.

45 was the average attendance at worship over thesetwelve months. Praise the Holy Spirit!and pray for hiswork.

36 is the number of students from 20 Spanish-speakinghomes who are enrolled at St. Marks school. It means thatour Heavenly Father has gathered practically all of our eligi-ble students into our school !

7 is the number of baptisms en el nombre del Padre y delHijo y del Espritu Santo in the past year. This is a marve-

lous example of the Holy Spirits love: placing children intotheir Heavenly Fathers arms with sins washed away in Jesu-s name.

6 + 3+ 5 is the number of adult confirmations plus pro-fessions of faith on the part of youth during the last twelvemonths and the adults currently under instruction. Thesehave known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to makethem wise for salvation.

The above figures are much influenced by the skilled workof our faithful deacon, known to our Mexican friends as

Pastor Dale. The numbers also reflect the outstanding workof the excellent teachers at St. Marks School.

Even if the future were to bring much smaller numbers thanthose above, we would gladly give thanks to our exceeding-ly gracious Savior for all his labor on behalf of these pre-cious souls.

Your Pastors Want to ServeYou at the Hospital...

When you are hospitalized, your pastorswant to visit you. However, they need yourhelp to do so.

If your hospitalization takes place at the

local hospital in Watertown, PLEASEBE SURE TO ANSWER YES WHENTHEY ASK IF YOU WANT YOURCLERGY TO VISIT.

If hospitalization takes place outside ofWatertown: please let one of the pastorsknoweven in advance, if it is a sched-uled surgery.

In time of emergency or as death isquickly drawing near: the telephone isyour best avenue to reach a pastorandstart by calling the church office, if possi-ble.

The whole congregation is happy to prayon your behalf when you are ill. Simply letone of the pastors know youd like a pray-er in church.

Here is a shocking statistic: 50% ofChristian men and 20% of Christianwomen admit they are addicted topornography. Yes, Christian men andwomen.

Along with this sin come guilt, shame, and a sense of helpless-ness. If you or someone you know isstruggling with pornography and youdon't know where to turn, turn here:www.ConquerorsThroughChrist.net

Street Parking During School HoursPlease note that when you drop off or pick-up students at school there are restrictions on where you can park. The WIState Law prohibits parking adjacent to any school during school hours. School hours are considered to be 7:00am to4pm. If you park adjacent to the school you will be ticketed for a violation of the law. The WI State Law does allow youto wait in the car as you pick up or drop off your children for a few minutes; however, you may not leave your vehicleparked adjacent to school for even a brief moment. If you have any questions about the law, please contact the WatertownPolice Department.**************************************************************************************************

Manner/Socialization ProgramThe Manners/Socialization Program is off to such a positive start. I would like compliment all of the students on theefforts using their manners each day at school. They are doing a great job and so are the teachers. In the upper grades thestudents have been fantastic in carrying out the guidelines for behavior. I am very impressed that the students are sopositive and willing to be so polite and gracious to one another and the teacher. This all speaks well of Gods children aSt. Marks. If you have a chance and would like to come by school to see the students in action, please do so. We are offto such a great start. I pray that the Lord continues to bless the efforts of the students and teachers.**************************************************************************************************

ForensicsThe Forensics Program for the 2013-2014 school year will be very different. First of all, we want to encourageas many of our young people to go out for Forensics as possible this year. Since there will not be a dramaprogram for the upper grades every year, Forensics will be emphasized a great deal during the off year fordrama. The 2013-2014 school year is an off year for drama and therefore we will have a larger and moreintense Forensics Program this year.

Forensics at St. Marks is a Co-curricular program where the students practice at school during theschool day and then attend several Forensic Meets in October and November. Students that are involved inother activities such as sports could still participate in the Forensics Program if there is no conflict with thevarious Forensic meets.

All students this year will remain part of the Forensics Team; however, the students that go to each Meetwill be chosen based on the Meets restrictions and the students overall talents. All the Forensics students wil

continue to prepare for the huge extravaganza held at St. Marks on November 22nd even if they do not attend

all meets. That night of November 22nd the Forensics Team will be joined by all 5 th through 8th grade studentsfor an awesome display of public speaking talent. The classroom students will be doing Readers Theater

performances as a class. Parental help will be needed with our more aggressive Forensics Program. If you, as aparent, can help, please contact Mr. Uttech as soon as possible. A few guidelines are included in this notePlease read through the material and then encourage your son or daughter to join the Forensics Program at St.Marks. Please read the attached note concerning Forensics. Mr. Uttech**************************************************************************************************
