An easy way to update a space is to introduce color on your walls through paint. Color blocking is big; you don’t have to have that color introduced anywhere else in the room. Paint your walls and leave them alone. introduce neutral upholstery and accessories.

Joni spearJoni Spear Interior Designstripes are big this year, and livening up a hallway is one way to really make them sing. This can be accomplished by using a professional painter or carefully measuring and taping yourself. Be sure to have the stripes be proportionate to the space.

Doveikis & Associates, Inc.My favorite trend is large-scale graphic patterns. i love this trend because i’ve always been drawn to graphic patterns (as a kid i played with spirograph for hours on end!), and because they are so versatile! This blue-and-off-white fretwork patterned fabric is crisp, not too feminine, not too masculine and really makes a statement! The large scale is a fresh take on a traditional motif, so it can be equally at home with antiques or in a contemporary setting.

Marcia MooreMarcia Moore DesignWhenever I say, “track lighting” to a client I get, “are you kidding?” looks and comments. This is not the track lighting you have seen for years. Track lighting is now eye candy for your ceiling! It works great in a kitchen to point light at every dark corner and light up the whole room too. It works in a long, dark hallway where you are used to one dim ceiling fixture, especially if you have art hanging on the walls. A combination of spots and pendants works great as a replacement for a chandelier above a table so you have table light and also can highlight artwork on the walls.

SLHL: Can any design style incorporate slipcovers? How do you use them?

Teddy: Slipcovers tend to have a more causal, not structured, slouchy look, so they are not right for every client or piece of furniture. I like them on small chairs or boxy pieces. When the right person slipcovers the right piece it is hard to tell that it is a slipcover. They can extend the life of the original piece or cover up the well-worn piece, however slipcovers are not always the inexpensive way out, as many people seem to think.

SLHL: If someone’s home hadn’t been updated in a while, what room would you suggest starting with and why? How would you update it?

Teddy: I like to look at each room and see what needs to be done. I like to make a list of priorities, letting the client weigh-in on what they are partial to and what has got to go. I scout out the treasures and timeless pieces and figure out what needs to be done to update. Many people are tempted to concentrate on one space at a time, but then you make everything else look even more dated. If you selectively edit and rearrange, add some new things, update windows and upholstery, pop in a new lamp and a few new pillows, you can buy some time. I love creating long-term relationships. I think many people do a project and then let things go for way too long. If you make it a "work-in-progress," it keeps things fresher and more up to date. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Updating fabrics in your home décor keeps a room looking fresh. Teddy Karl shares ways to incorporate it into any room in your house.

SLHL: You’ve always possessed a passion for fabrics. Tell us about your background.

Teddy: I grew up in Massachusetts and attended Southeastern Massachusetts University where I majored in textile design. I taught myself to sew and began designing clothes. I left school and opened a custom design studio where I designed and made bridal, prom and evening wear. I married my wife in 1992, and we moved to St. Louis. I transitioned to the interior design business when we came to town. I love fabric and realized that as long as I am working with it, I will be happy. I have been at The great Cover-Up for five-and-a-half years.

SLHL: What is your philosophy on updating your home using fabric?

Teddy: I think it’s great to update a room by changing pillows or re-upholstering a piece of furniture. I like to keep things always transitioning to keep it fresh, and then a room never looks dated or worn. You also never have the expense of completely starting over. New window treatments will have the biggest impact. Consider slipcovering a piece or changing out pillows seasonally – heavier, darker fabrics in the winter and lighter, brighter fabrics in spring.

With a kitchen led by chef Lou Rook III, a firm supporter of the Slow Food movement and one of the area’s first

chefs to heavily use local products in his kitchen, it’s surprising to hear that there are diners who think that Annie Gunn’s is no more than a steakhouse. “We do put a lot of effort into our steaks,” concedes Rook, “But there’s a huge array of product that we offer.” Given the chef’s commitment to both local farmers and quality ingredients, much of that product is local, and the full range of creative fare the Annie Gunn’s kitchen turns out can be seen clearly in a four-course menu that showcases the

bounty of the season as well as the restaurant’s legendary beef. “I like to keep it as local and seasonal as possible,” says Rook as he explains his process for creating the menu. “So I start there.” And, he added, with its earthy pumpkin-mushroom risotto, rich and hearty pork belly, smoky trout and sweet apples, “this menu screams fall. Next, Rook considers the menu’s balance, ensuring that there’s a range of proteins and not too much starch. “Everybody loves our beef, so of course that’s there,” he says. “But instead of doing something too simple, we’ve done the Florentine style.” Then, of course, something sweet to finish—albeit nothing too complicated, given Rook’s dislike of pastry making. “I despise pastry,” he readily admits. “I love eating it; I don’t like doing it.” His solution fits nicely into his preferred seasonal approach, with the apple’s natural sweetness enhanced with caramelization and complemented by a tangy cheddar made in Jamesport, Mo.—a classic pairing. Years of practice makes working with local produce almost a no-brainer for the chef, but Rook also noted that the increased awareness of the importance of cooking seasonally and the recent addition of Eat Here St. Louis, a distributor of local products run by former Riddle’s Penultimate owner and fellow locavore Andy Ayers, has made it even easier. “There are more farmers, and our farmers have learned how to extend the growing season longer,” Rook says. “And Andy being the distributor is incredible—you’re almost guaranteed that you’ll get the products you planned on. And I can be in the kitchen more, taking care of guests, instead of being out shaking hands with farmers.” “We’re blessed at Annie Gunn’s,” says the chef. “We have incredible customers who understand that quality is going to cost, and they’re willing to spend the money for these products.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

When it comes to furniture, upholstery is the epitome of being green. A piece of furniture made right, steve says, can last lifetimes with just a few touchups here and there. if a chair or sofa is uneven, lumpy or sagging, odds are it needs a vacation to Peacock upholstery. deteriorating the comfort. But that’s an easy fix for Steve, an accomplished upholsterer since his teenage years. Steve has worked with many historical pieces, most notably those in the Missouri Governor’s Mansion. He lovingly shows off a photograph of his work on an 18th century Biedermeyer sofa with beautifully hand-stitched diamond pattern upholstery. Everything that comes into his shop is improved, he says. No matter what shape it’s in when it arrives, brand new or battered by hundreds of years of use, it leaves the shop looking great. Aside from upholstering sofas and chairs, Steve has also upholstered doors, walls, panels and the

insides of bookcases. “My style is very creative, with great detail and a fine finish,” says Steve. “It’s an extension of me.” Happy to work in a place where he can let his artistic side flair, Steve says he always stands behind his work and loves interacting with his customers. He likes to keep his business old-fashioned honest, like he learned from his German father who taught him the trade. Why she loves it:“Coming from a family of eight girls, that has grown to an extended family of 80, my lower level has become the ideal place to entertain,” Pamela says. Replicating a hip jazz lounge with her own personal touches, she has created the ultimate hangout spot. After making the decision to brick the entire space, her basement transformation quickly fell into place. The brick was laid by Pamela’s husband Bruce and two friends. Bruce also built the bars, fireplace and structural columns built into the bar, including the custom lights. He also laid the stone for the back bar and fireplace. Pamela created conversation areas that each have their own unique highlights. “The Three Stooges watch over a pub table as you descend the stairwell, a mercury-brushed-stone countertop with lit columns accentuate the bar, glass teardrop pendants illuminate the fireplace, the Beatles make an appearance in the custom banquette and a one-of-a-kind slab table anchors the dining area,” she says. She completed her vision with black and white photos and pops of lime accessories.

Why the judges love it:The cabinetry and appliances in this lower level put many kitchens to shame. The bar area rocks! Love the exposed brick.

Why he loves it:For Bob Burmeister and his family, the kitchen is the heart of their home. So when they renovated six years ago, they knew the kitchen was their top priority. Adding a breakfast room onto the back of their home extended the kitchen, making it the center of their living space. The warm wood tones in the custom alder stained and glazed cabinetry make the kitchen inviting and perfect for entertaining. Work zones were carefully planned to allow for plenty of space for Bob and his wife to cook at the same time. Professional-grade appliances, such as the dual Subzero refrigerator, are concealed in wood panels giving a furniture appearance and an Old World feel.

Why the judges love it:This kitchen is a gorgeous combination of architectural and decorative details. The Old World feel with modern amenities makes this kitchen spectacular. A kitchen island and separate bar for dining is unique. Guests can watch while the host is cooking without being in the way. Great space planning!

Why she loves it:Angela Mathey was feeling a bit of the empty nest syndrome after her two children moved out. She came home one weekend after being out of town to find her husband had repainted her daughter’s former room “a strange color—not one I would have picked at all.” Inspired to transform the room into a comfortable haven for houseguests, Angela worked with the color to design a Paris apartment-style guest room. Starting with a comforter as her inspiration, she achieved the French feel by incorporating items from her boutique, her home away from home. Guests are greeted with a sweet message hanging next to the vintage bed (a perfect fit and find from Craigslist). Above the bed Angela hung an open frame around vintage-inspired prints she adored. The room also features collections of vintage clocks and books. The little details she added to the room add warmth and charm. “My sister was the first to stay in the newly designed bedroom,” she says. “She said she felt so comfy and loved in the room, which was exactly what I was hoping my guests would feel.”

Why the judges love it:This room is darling, and the neutral color palette is great. It is creative and functional without being too kitschy.

Why she loves it:When she wants to get away to a serene setting, Pamela Calvert doesn’t have to go any further than her own back yard. Pamela and her husband Bruce love to entertain, so having a lively and functional outdoor space was a must. Constructing their dream back yard by hand, the two wanted a connected, open space with intimate focal points amongst various cascading levels. Complete with a Tuscan grill, fire pit, relaxing hot tub and canopy, this is the ideal place to entertain. Even when not hosting family or friends, Pamela enjoys the space for herself. “The sound of two fountains enhances the natural surroundings and completes our own personal outdoor oasis,” she says.

Why the judges love it:What an amazing transformation! This outdoor addition will add a lot of value to this home. The outdoor kitchen has everything anyone would dream of having. Nice space planning that includes so many different seating areas.

Flagstone paths wind up the lushly planted knoll, where a dignified vintage home stands sentinel over its quiet Clayton neighborhood. The superb integration of the residence and its grounds is hardly surprising, since the owners are Brian Smith of Gunn and Smith Architects and Matt Moynihan of Moynihan and Associates, a landscape architectural firm. As an architect, Brian readily admits that he prefers contemporary design, so it seemed reasonable to ask why he and Matt had chosen an 1,850-square-foot Tudor cottage-style home originally built in 1928. “We liked the basic plan, the nice rooms, the private corner lot and the neighborhood,” he explains. What followed was a collaborative series of renovations over two decades, adding approximately 1,200 square feet to the home while carefully preserving its classic “pinwheel” layout. Reminiscent of many Frank Lloyd Wright designs, pinwheel plans feature a central hub with projecting wings that allow for windows on three sides. For Brian and Matt, the challenge was to significantly expand the home – which had only one bedroom, 1-1/2 baths and a one-car garage, yet retain its distinctive character and natural lighting on all three sides of each space. “We must’ve done at least 15 drawings before starting the renovation,” Brian laughs. The first step was relatively simple, modifying the garage to accommodate two cars. Several years later, the kitchen was doubled in size, the ceiling raised and a gable added to allow for a guest bedroom and second full bath on the upper level.

Undertaken in 2007, the major renovation required the owners to move out for a year while an open breakfast/hearth room was added off the kitchen, the upstairs master suite enlarged and an entire wing built to create a music/dining room. During this phase, the home’s antiquated electrical wiring was updated and the hodgepodge of heating systems replaced with eco-friendly geothermal. “We had to drill 350 feet down to install the geothermal,” Brian notes. Exterior brick removed during construction was meticulously re-laid in the home’s classic “drunken brick” pattern; displaced leaded windows were reused in the new spaces; and much of the original crown molding was eliminated, in the owners’ words, “to simplify the traditional house.” The addition of the new wing allowed for creation of a large private patio where guests can fully appreciate Matt’s landscape design

talents (featured in The New American Landscape, edited by Thomas Christopher and published this spring, and in SLHL’s June/July 2012 issue). A brilliant example of sustainable gardening, the yard has the picturesque appeal of an English meadow, which Matt describes as “an environment filled with grasses, flowers and plants that can grow and prosper with less use of water, gasoline and fertilizers.” Most of the owners’ daily activity revolves around the spacious kitchen/breakfast/hearth room area. “Matt’s a great cook, and we entertain a lot,” Brian remarks. “Guests tend to congregate in this area, so we wanted to make the kitchen more a living space, rather than utilitarian.” To achieve the desired look, minimal wall cabinetry was installed – all custom-built in crisp white, with Hafele hardware, fully integrated Sub-Zero appliances and subtle gray-green honed granite countertops. The full-size refrigerator and wine cooler were moved to the lower level,

where an elevator provides easy access from the laundry to the top floor. Offering expansive views of the garden, the breakfast/hearth room is dominated by a Georgian-trimmed fireplace that backs to an outdoor fireplace. A mohair Biedermeier sofa provides comfortable seating, and the walls showcase a variety of artwork, including pieces by Sean Landers and Arthur Osver and Tuscan prints. Oriental and cowhide rugs lend color and texture to the rich hardwood flooring throughout the home, and adjacent to the breakfast room, the gallery further illustrates the owners’ enthusiasm for fine art. The gallery’s focal point is a monoprint by Barbara Holtz, influenced by her travels in the Himalayas and a first-prize winner in the Florence Biennale. Also displayed are another Arthur Osver and several watercolors and oils by Matt, who’s as talented with a brush as he is with landscape design.

Beyond the gallery is the music/dining room, with its lacquered baby grand piano and an intriguing assortment of visual arts, including a large floral stencil by Dominican-born Aurelio Grisanty, a Tom Huck woodcut entitled “The Ultimate Cock Fight,” a carved Balinese temple door – and a 54-inch flat-screen that displays photographic collages when the sound system is activated. “I especially like the ‘transparency’ of this room,” says Brian. “You can actually see through the gallery to the fireplace in the breakfast room.” Surrounded by slipper chairs, the dining table was fabricated by noted St. Louis architect Isadore Shank, who created a travertine top for the massive 19th-century base. Lined with Brian’s architectural library, the fireside living room remained its original size. One wall is devoted to a quintessential Erik Spehn canvas, complemented elsewhere by another Holtz abstract

and a Grisanty stencil. Adding unique character to the room are an antelope Chiwara (a ritual object) and a 3,000-year-old culinary vessel from North Africa. “I’m fascinated by the way African art seems to combine modernity with antiquity,” Brian comments. On exhibit in the foyer and stairway are a Motherwell, “Seascape” by Daniel Barton and a small Erik Spehn. Upstairs, the original maid’s room has been converted to a hall (humorously referred to as the “Moynihan watercolor gallery”) and the former master bath to a sitting/dressing area. Bright and airy, the master bedroom is surrounded by windows on three sides and extends into an inviting sitting bay. The walk-through master bath connects to a private TV room (originally the home’s sole

bedroom), which is furnished with a B&B Italia sofa, Eames lounge and Ellen Gray side table. Noteworthy artwork in this room includes Brian’s first acquisition, a piece by illustrator Wanda Loomis, a large acrylic by a young Australian painter and Leslie Laskey prints. Also on this level are the guest suite and a sizable office that can serve as an extra bedroom, when needed. The sum effect of this light-filled home is one of grace, serenity, comfort and thorough respect for architectural tradition – a residential gem with all the charm of the English countryside. im Meiners’ home could be the best advertising for his business. The two-story, white residence is in a historic Weldon Spring neighborhood created for the top military officers connected with the Weldon Spring Ordinance Plant, which manufactured

explosives during World War II. Designed around a basic floor plan created for military brass, the home has been transformed with additions and topped off with landscaping that makes it a one-of-a-kind showplace. Boxwood and blue spruce topiaries frame the curbside and front door. Vivid, red-orange New Guinea impatiens contrast dramatically with the various shades of green provided by lush annual

ferns, shrubs and perennials that fill the beds spanning the front of the home. As the owner of Prestige Landscape in Chesterfield, Jim spends his weekdays creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind landscapes for his clients. On weekends he maintains his own one-acre garden, which occasionally spills over-to his neighbor’s delight-to the two-acre property next door. “Because I don’t mind working seven days a week, I don’t have trouble maintaining my own garden,” he says laughing. He also gives a large amount of the credit for the lush space to his wife Laurie, who plants most of the flowers and does the mulching. yard, is the use of historic materials. A history buff, he reclaims stones and materials from old buildings and looks at new ways to use them. In a nod to the ruin gardens that were popular in the mid-1800s, Jim incorporates parts of old structures in current settings. “Old stones have a patina that new ones don’t,” he points out. “I’m doing a cobblestone patio for one client,” he says. “She knows it will be rough but she wants that look.” A number of historic artifacts have found a place in his own garden. They include a marble fountain from the Old Cathedral; a stone lion’s head given to him by late City Museum founder Bob Cassilly; a wagon wheel uncovered on his own property and stones from the ruins of the 18th Century Fort de Chartres near Prairie du Rocher, Ill. The stones had been scavenged many years ago by area residents for use in foundations of their homes. He also loves recycling more mundane

materials. When he and Laurie decided they no longer needed the in-ground pool that was a part of the property when they purchased it in 1996, he used the decking material to create a series of patios that lead from the home’s lovely side and back porches through the landscape and culminate in a charming, plant-surrounded waterfall. Whether designing his own garden or working with clients, Jim’s foremost concern is a landscape that “works.” “I spend a lot of time dragging out of people how they want to use their yard,” he explains. “The landscape has to fit in with their lifestyle.” Once that is established, Jim’s next challenge is ensuring proper drainage before plants are installed. “Good drainage is essential,” he emphasizes. “I spend a lot of time moving earth to accomplish that.” When it comes to plants, Jim and Laurie have some favorites that appear repeatedly as you stroll through their garden.

Large trees: Beeches are a favorite for glossy leaves and tidy appearance. Jim includes purple, European, American and tri-color beeches in his own yard. A zelkova, from the same family as the American elm and similar in appearance but resistant to Dutch elm disease, is another favorite. Smaller trees: Japanese maples, including upright, lace-leaf ‘Seiryu’ maples and delicate, fern-like cut-leaf maples, show up in a number of areas in his yard. He also has included a wonderfully fragrant Japanese tree lilac, with huge white blossoms that appear in early- to mid-May. Shrubs: Jim works with a variety of shrubs. Some are more common including bottlebrush buckeye, evergreen ‘Otto Luken’ laurel, winterberry and boxwood. Others are striking specimens such as the gold-leafed buddleja ‘Golden Sovereign’ with blue-violet flowers and a purple-leaved perennial hibiscus ‘Kopper King ‘ with large pink flowers. Another favorite for moist shade is a clumping bamboo (Fargesia rufa) ‘Green Panda.’ “It takes up space and you never have to weed it or prune it,” he notes. Perennials and grasses: Keynoted by a sentimental favorite, his grandmother’s spring-blooming iris, which have gone with him

from house to house, he works with a host of different perennials to vary the colors, textures and seasons of his garden. Tasseled, graceful fountain grass contrasts with upright, red-tipped Japanese blood grass. Fall blooming dwarf asters add a bright note at the end of the seasons. Two favorites are European ginger, a shade-loving ground cover with rounded, glossy green leaves, and variegated Solomon’s seal, which also thrives in the shade and has arching stems trimmed with oval green leaves edged in white. Jim “farms” the often difficult to find ginger on his own property so it is available for clients. He uses large clumps of the Solomon’s seal as a deer-proof alternative to hosta. Annuals: Jim gives the nod to Laurie who loves New Guinea impatiens for its bright shots of color and dark green, lance-shaped foliage, zinnias for heat tolerance and brilliant colors and lantana for color, heat tolerance and deer resistance. Two foliage favorites are upright, rich green ‘Kimberly Queen’ ferns, which she finds perform equally well with some sun as well as in shade, and lacy leaved, silver gray dusty miller. “It’s an old fashioned plant, but it always looks good,” she says. David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest Nursery and Garden CenterOctober Glory MapleOctober Glory Maple is one of the best shade trees for the Saint Louis area. This tree transplants well, tolerates our clay soils and is relatively fast growing. The October Glory has green leaves in the summer and they turn Burgundy red late in the fall and keep their red fall color later than any other Red Maple varieties.

Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens ‘Wedding Gown' HydrangeaAbsolutely exquisite pristine white flowers resemble bouquets of miniature white roses. Lacecap blossoms first appear in late spring and will continue to bloom until frost. Blooming on new and old wood, 'Wedding Gown' is guaranteed to flower regardless of late pruning or a hard winter. A compact, mounding shrub only 3' tall makes them perfect for small spaces and containers. Its delightful blossoms dry to a soft chartreuse making them perfect for long lasting indoor arrangements. Deadheading encourages more flowers. Shrubs prefer shade to part shade. Water well to encourage flowering.

Jason Todd, Landscape St. LouisJuddi Viburnum Juddi Viburnum is one of the most undervalued and versatile three season all-star shrubs around. The fragrance of the spring bloom rivals that of lilacs. It has a wonderful dark green display in summer that explodes into warm reds and burgundy in the fall. This adaptable viburnum can be used as a specimen plant or planted in groups along a woodland edge. It grows 6-8 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide but can be trimmed and cut back. They usually always make an appearance into one of my designs.

Jim Meiners, Prestige Landscape Purple European BeechMy favorite tree is the Purple European Beech. I like it because of the purple color glossy leaves and sinuous textured trunk. Beech trees are strong branched and make very little mess. They look best as a multiple stemmed or low-branched affair. The leaves turn copper colored in the fall and stay on the tree all winter making the beech tree an excellent choice for privacy or blocking an unattractive view. The Purple Beech is a purple leafed tree in the spring and early summer, but the leaves may turn green in areas with long hot summers.

Dan Mee, Frisella NurseryPersian ParrotiaOne of my favorite trees is the Persian Parrotia. In summer the parrotia has clean, deep green foliage that holds up to the heat. During the fall we see a muddling of yellows, oranges and reds with the foliage giving way to a unique branching structure and exfoliating cream, green and grey bark in winter. No two parrotias are alike, and they can be single or multi-trunked. You don’t see them used that often in our area even though they perform extremely well and provide structure and color to the landscape.

Another scorching summer has slipped into memory, and as the days shorten and temperatures dip, thoughts turn to cozy fall evenings spent fireside. For Larry and Stacie Brost, that means heading outside, not in. The couple’s new Wildwood home features a unique exterior space set to one side of the house’s front elevation. Open on two sides and leading from Larry’s study, it’s technically a porch, but a full masonry fireplace transforms it into an outdoor hearth room perfect for enjoying the crisp fall air. With the home located on a heavily wooded lot, the 14-by-14-foot room’s wicker seating arrangement provides a unique and comfortable setting for reading, intimate gatherings with a small group, or simply a front-row seat to nature’s annual autumnal color show. Such a space was always part of the couple’s plans for the home, their dream house. “Porches are important to me,” says Stacie, an investment manager by day. “They say, ‘home,’ ‘comfort,’ they’re inviting.” Interior-like details add to that inviting feel and mingle seamlessly with more practical elements suited to the all-weather room. The fireplace’s natural stone is tumbled, softening the hard edges of the rock, while its earthy tones add warmth. The hearthstone’s polished finish brings out the stone’s natural grain and adds a textural contrast to the fireplace surround’s rough texture. Composite cedar shake shingles

covering two walls protect the exterior of the house but are painted a soft, comforting neutral. A cedar ceiling overhead complements a weather-resistant stamped concrete floor tinted to add depth of color and lightly textured to be bare-feet friendly. As the owner of Heartlands Building Co., a company specializing in outdoor spaces, Larry designed and built the home, ensuring that form truly met function. The two open walls, for example, sport retractable remote-controlled screens—a helpful detail during mosquito season. And the roof above the porch was insulated and built using a solar reflective sheathing that dispels most of the sun’s heat on a scorching summer day. As a result, the room’s ceiling fan is much more effective at cooling the space. “It makes a big difference,” Larry explains. “You feel an immediate relief from the heat.” But the space really shines in the cooler months, when the surrounding woods provide ample firewood for the angled fireplace whose considerable warmth supplies a picturesque backdrop for making s’mores with the family. In the Stellenbosch region, near Cape Town, the vines are starting to bud in fields that flank some of the most scenic wine lands in the world. Since ancient times, farmers have known that the soil in this area is among the most fertile on the planet, and the climate extremely conducive to growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Fleeing religious persecution, French Huguenots arrived in the 1600s, quickly making Stellenbosch a haven in which their brethren could flourish. They also brought with them French winemaking knowledge and, as important, French grapevines. In the early 1950s, Frans Malan, a descendent of these early grape growers, planted vines on De Hoop in the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains. Endowed with superb terroir, the farm subsequently became

the nucleus of the Simonsig Wine Estate. The first wines were sold under the Simonsig Estate label in 1968. Literally translated, it means Simon’s View, named after the spectacular views of the mountains rising up in the distance. Through Frans, efforts, and that of his three sons who currently own the winery, Simonsig is among the best-known names in quality wines in South Africa. Often, Francois Malan and his family will take in the beautiful view from their land as they walk their two Alsatian Shepherds past the old family farm or sit near the floor-to-ceiling windows in the winery’s acclaimed Cuvee Restaurant and enjoy chef Lucas Carsten’s many classic renderings of hearty meals. While ostrich, wildebeest and other exotic South African fare have graced the menu, it’s meats like beef

and venison that make the best pairings with Simonsig’s full-bodied red wines. Chief among them is Pinotage, a hybrid grape that comes from the French grapes Pinot Noir and Cinsault and is only cultivated and bottled in South Africa. Pinotage was the first wine released under the Simonsig label, and the winery’s Pinotages have been award-winners nearly every year. Venison loin with a smoked butternut gateau, caramelized Brussels sprouts, lardons (pieces of bacon) and a port sauce cries out for the Redhill Pinotage, a luscious, fruity wine that spends 16 months in oak. A dish like Chalmar beef fillet with creamed leeks, shimeji mushrooms, potato rösti and a guinness butter emulsion is best paired with the Frans Malan Cape Blend. It renders delicious aromas and flavors

of dark cherry and berry that paints an image of a decadent black forest cake. A Cape Blend, with the traditional Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, is South Africa’s version of a Meritage. It is near and dear to Francois and the whole Malan family, and is the winery’s “flagship” wine that the brothers named after their deceased father.

There is no better place to catch up with friends, reminisce about old family memories and create new ones than in your kitchen. For many families, the kitchen is the heart of the home. This could not be truer for the Houlihan family. “It is the spot to be,” says Michael Houlihan, president of HDC Homes Without Limits. “The kitchen is where the magic happens.” He and his wife Mary purchased their University City home in 2002. Serving as the contractor, Michael and Mary planned to renovate the entire 1925 two-and-a-half story brick house, knowing the kitchen was going to be one of their main focuses. Renovations could not begin until plans were made to construct an elevator in the center of the home to allow Michael, who is in a wheelchair, to access every area of the home, including the basement. Installing the elevator eliminated the need for basement steps, allowing the kitchen to be widened. In widening the space, Michael and Mary were able to open the kitchen to their lush backyard patio, bringing the outdoors in and the indoors out. The window above the sink provides a scenic view of the

seasonal changes in the garden, while a leaded glass window off the breakfast nook overlooks an intimate garden, home to many birds during the winter. As the main cook in the family, Michael needed the kitchen to be functional for him. The maple shaker-style cabinets have full extension drawers and offer plenty of storage below the countertop. The stainless steel stove has front access ovens and controls for the six burners that only seem to be completely occupied during the holidays and large parties. A butcher’s block island, situated in the center, serves a dual purpose: functional for Michael to use as a go-between for the refrigerator and the stove and as a social gathering spot, a place for friends and family to drink wine, chat and watch Michael create his culinary delights. Now happily in their home for 10 years, the Houlihan’s have enjoyed many glasses of wine, quiet dinners and holiday family gatherings in their kitchen. Frank Lloyd Wright coined the expression “form follows function,” and this phrase resonates in the Houlihan’s kitchen. “We believe nothing is, nor can be beautiful, if it isn’t functional,” says Michael.
