A Reminder About MedicareCoverage of Flu Vaccines
Medicare Part B covers 100 percent of the costof a flu shot once every flu season with no PartB deductible required. This is true for bothOriginal Medicare and Medicare Advantageplans (private health plans).
Original Medicare will pay for the flu shot nomatter where you get it, as long as the healthcare provider is enrolled in Medicare. You willpay no copay or deductible if you see a doctoror other health care provider who takes assign-ment. Providers who take assignment cannotcharge you more than the Medicare approvedamount. If you receive your Medicare benefitsfrom a private plan, the plan cannot requirethat you get a referral for the vaccine, but itcan require that you use providers in the plan'snetwork. You should call your plan to find outwhat rules apply.
The flu season usually runs from Novemberthrough April. Therefore, Medicare may covera flu shot twice in one calendar year. Forexample, if you get a shot in January 2011 forthe 2010/2011 flu season, you could getanother shot in October 2011 for the2011/2012 flu season.
What is Influenza (the flu)?Influenza (flu) is a serious disease of the nose, throat, and lungs. It can make you sick for aweek or longer with coughing, fever, aching, and more. It can lead to pneumonia and makealready existing health problems such asdiabetes, asthma, and heart disease worse.
Why Should I Get a Flu Shot? Each year in the US about 36,000 people die
from flu-related causes. Getting a flu shot is
the BEST way to protect yourself from the flu.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot?
Everyone who is 6 months or older can benefit
from the protection of a flu shot.
How Does the Flu Shot Work?
The flu shot helps your body fight viruses that
cause the flu. It does this by teaching your
immune system to recognize flu viruses, so
that it is “primed” or ready, to fight the disease
if you are exposed to it.
How Well Does the Flu Shot Work?
Most of the time, the flu shot will prevent the
flu. In scientific studies, the effectiveness of
the flu shot has ranged from 70% to 90% in
healthy people younger than age 65 when
there is a good match between circulating
viruses and those in the vaccine. The vaccine
may be less effective in older people or people
with weakend immune systems. However,
these people still benefit from getting the
vaccine because it helps prevents severe ill-
ness, hospitalization and death from the flu.
What Are the Side Effects of the Flu Shot?
The most common side effects are soreness or
redness where the shot was given. These
symptoms go away in a few days. Other side
effects such as fever or aches are extremely
rare. In clinical trials, fever or aches are
extremely rare. In clinical trials, there was no
difference in side effects between people who
got the vaccine and people who got a placebo
(“sugar pill”). The risk of severe allergic
reaction is less than 1 in 4 million.
4 STOUGHTON AREA SENIOR CENTER • 248 W. Main St., Stoughton WI 53589
Can the Flu Shot Give Me the Flu?No. The ingredients in the vaccine cannotcause the flu. The flu viruses in the vaccine arekilled.
When Should I Get a Flu Shot?October and November are the best months toget vaccinated, but December is not too late inmost years.
Can This Shot Help Protect Me AgainstColds and Other Respiratory Diseases? No. This vaccine protects only against the fluviruses contained in the vaccine.
What is the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine? The nasal spray vaccine is sprayed into a per-son’s nose, instead of being given a shot. It isapproved for use in healthy people 5 through49 years old who are not pregnant. It is a safeand effective vaccine.
For more information, ask your health careprovider or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636) Website www.cdc.gov/flu Thisinformation was taken from a handout of theCDC.
Pneumonia Shots
Another preventive measurethat you may want to discuss
with your doctor would be to help protect youagainst Pneumonia. The common cold canlead to pneumonia and there is no vaccinationagainst a cold, so a preventative pneumoniavaccination can help keep a miserable cold,to just being a cold.

Lisa’s Kitchen CornerCranberriesCranberries score among the highest of all fruitsin antioxidants. Diets including fruits andvegetables with high antioxidant values, like cran-berries, may help support memory function andcoordination. Cranberries are a cholesterol free, fat free and low sodium food, and help maintain ahealthy heart.Cranberries are part of a healthy diet and containproanthocyandins and antioxidants that may helpmaintain a healthy immune system. The cranberry is a little, red tart fruit with a bigpunch. Wisconsin produces more of thispower-packed berry than any other state in theU.S. In fact, the cranberry is Wisconsin’s officialstate fruit. It is also the state’s number one fruitcrop, both in acres planted and in the industry’svaluable contribution to the state’s economy. The cranberry, once called “crane berry” bysettlers because of its blossom’s resemblance tothe sandhill crane, is best known for its place onthe Thanksgiving table. But, the fruit has becomea year-round favorite, and is making its way intoeverything from summer salads and jams, to trailmix and cookies.Cranberries were first harvested in Wisconsinaround 1860 by Edward Sacket in Berlin, Wis.Wisconsin cranberry growers annually harvestenough cranberries to supply every man, womanand child in the world with 26 cranberries.
Cranberries grow on low-trailing vines in sandy orpeat marshes, but in Wisconsin, cranberrymarshes are flooded with water to aid in harvest-ing. Because the tart tiny berries contain a pocketof air, when the marsh is flooded the berries floatto the surface to be picked up by harvestingequipment.
