TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 Cyrus, King of Persia and friend to the Jewish people, becomes the Lord’s anointed one, and through God’s intervention, returns the Jews to their own country.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Paul rejoices that the Thessalonians, newly converted to Christianity, are displaying remarkable constancy in their new-found faith.

Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21 Seeking to entrap Jesus in his speech, the hostile and hypocritical Pharisees ask him this dangerous question, “Is it lawful to pay tax to the emperor or not?” Realizing their treacherous motives, Jesus asks for a Roman coin, and pointing to the inscription of Caesar’s, he answers, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, but give to God what is God’s.”

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS IN GRADES 4 & UP Altar serving training for 4th graders on up begins in November with 3 – 1 hour training sessions in Church. It’s a great way to get involved in the weekly Masses and be a part of our parish community. The newly trained servers will be introduced to

the parish on November 23rd at the 10:30 AM Mass (It is not mandatory that they attend but it’s a nice ceremony). A brief reception will follow to welcome the new altar servers and their families to the Altar Serving Ministry. For more information contact Sue Farrell at [email protected] or 860-521-6736. The exact training dates/times are flexible and will be set depending on what works best for the majority.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Jesus was exasperated when he scolded: “Why do you put me to the test?” It is natural for children to test parents; this is how they learn and how we teach limits, rules and values. Be like Jesus in today’s gospel; he was firm, honest and direct.

CHILDREN’S HAT-COAT-GLOVE COLLECTION

There is an overwhelming need this year for children’s winter outwear. If you have a child’s coat, gloves or hat to donate, please leave it in the Parish Hall between October 18th & 26th. Donations will be distributed to Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Hartford who will distribute them to needy children.

Please do not bring blankets, sleepwear, shirts or pants, or other clothing, as these are normally not accepted at donation sites. We would prefer not to receive adult coats, hats, etc. as our focus this year is children. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who has participated in this very worthwhile endeavor three years in a row. Thank You!!

In Sunday's Gospel, people tried to trick Jesus by asking Him if they must obey the government by paying taxes. They thought Jesus would insist that we should only follow God's rules. Jesus is teaching us that we must obey the laws of the govern-ment as well as the laws of God. This means that all laws have a purpose - and that God's laws are all about love! We should always remember that we honor God when we listen and obey the rules that keep us loyal to Him and to each other!
