THIS WEEK at Southern State Community College October 19, 2009 IN THE NEWS On Sept. 18, 2009, the Com- mission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs awarded continuing accreditation to Southern State Community College’s medical assisting associate’s degree program. The next comprehensive evalu- ation of the program, including an on-site review, is scheduled to occur no later than April 2009. Congratulations to full-time fac- ulty members: Jamie Compton, in- structor; Rhonda Davis, instructor; and Carry DeAtley, Ed.D., associ- ate professor and program director of the medical assisting program at Southern State. SSCC’s medical assisting program recently awarded continuing accreditation As part of the ongoing search for the next leader to take the helm at Southern State Commu- nity College, the board of trustees met with presidential candidates during two special board meetings held Oct. 13 and 14. Current president Sherry A. Stout, Ph.D., has announced her plan to retire effective Dec. 31, 2009. Dr. Stout has served South- ern State since its founding in 1975, most recently as the college’s fourth president. The trustees plan to invite presidential finalists, gleaned from a pool of 63 candidates, to partici- pate in more extensive on-campus interviews with a broad range of college constituents, including faculty, administration, staff and students. The next regular meeting of the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, Nov. 10. Adams County Campus Toward the end of the Oct. 14 regular board meeting, trustee Ralph Shell announced that “the board of trustees will be investi- gating the possibility of placing a Southern State campus in Adams County.” Board members and other col- lege representatives toured Adams County the week of Sept. 7 to ex- plore possible sites. It is one of the fine arts: I had almost said, the finest of fine arts.” Southern State’s Di- rector of Nursing Dr. Julianne Krebs and Presi- dent Dr. Sherry A. Stout offered the welcome and opening remarks, followed by introduction of the guest speaker—Carol Abt, LPN—by Brenda Tilton, practical nursing faculty assistant professor. “I am here to tell you that you can make an entire living as an LPN,” said Abt, office manager of Blanchester Medical Care and a 1983 graduate of Southern State’s practi- cal nursing program. “But how many of you plan to further your education?” All 23 graduates raised their hands and were met with applause. Local artists are invited to submit entries for this year’s ex- hibition, which will feature origi- nal artwork in the following cat- egories: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, sculpture, stained glass, pottery, jewelry, fine-art craft and wood- craft. Entries can be submitted from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Appalachian Gateway Center. An artists’ reception will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16, with artists’ introductions and awards presentation to begin at 7 p.m. During the reception, artists and guests will have an opportu- nity to meet and discuss the works on display.
