Manor’s Pumpkin Patch. This month, during Skills Workshop, the children at Hatfield Travis School visited Hatfield Manor
School garden. It was an exciting time as we had heard about their enormous pumpkin patch;
especially their „giant American Pumpkins‟. The children had the opportunity to look around the
garden and help with some of their gardening activities. The largest of the pumpkins went on tour around the village and visited our school for the day. The reporters commented on „the day the
pumpkin visited‟:
The pumpkin feels bumpy, the stork is spiky and it is wet
on the top. It has dints in it and it is a massive pumpkin-
Joshua.
I like the colour of the pumpkin and it is hard and it looks
yummy- Amy.
We went to Manor and there is a giant American Pumpkin
there. The pumpkin is from America and it weighs nearly
six stone- Olivia.
The American pumpkins are very big and they feel smooth
and very bumpy. They are hard to grow and they grow at
the top of the ground-Jake.
The pumpkin is very bumpy. It sounds like a drum when you put your ear to it and hit it. I like the
colour of it- Alexander.
It is hard because Manor has grown it. The pumpkin looks juicy- Lilly-Mae.
It feels hard and it is so big. It has big spots that are dark- Emily.
The Giant American pumpkin is a little bit rough and a little bit soft and it weighs 12 stones. The
British ones are still green- Sam.
The pumpkin is big and is prickly and soft. The
pumpkin has a point- Ashanti.
It feels bumpy and it looks nice to eat. I like
pumpkin soup. I would like to grow a pumpkin
patch and the pumpkin is giant-Jack.
We hope that the pumpkin was very tasty and
enjoyed by many during this Harvest time! We
have succumbed to the demands from the
children and will be creating a pumpkin patch in
our garden, this year.

After seeking advice about my debt I‟m considering bankruptcy, but I‟m worried as I‟ve been told it‟s
difficult to get a bank account after being made bankrupt. Is this true and what are my options?
As soon as you're made bankrupt, your bank and building society accounts will be frozen.
Once your accounts have been frozen you'll need to make other arrangements to pay your bills and
to receive your benefits or wages. Some banks let you keep your existing bank account after you've
gone bankrupt but most don't. If yours doesn't, you can try to open a basic bank account with
another bank. Most banks won't give a new account to people who are bankrupt but a few, such as
Barclays and the Co-Op, do. A list of which banks do and don't is available from the Financial

what have you got to lose except
unwanted inches?
All ages and physical conditions
will see the benefit.
For ladies of a certain age,
Who‟s waistlines have expanded,
A little exercise is good.
In fact it is demanded!
I‟ve never been inside a gym,
To push and pull at weights
Or jog along the treadmill hard,
And extend aerobic rates.
I suppose I must be lazy
It has no great appeal
To grunt, sweat and just get hot
Seems quite a ropey deal!
That‟s why I like the „Tables‟
The toning beds are fun
And quite a place to meet your
friends
When all is said and done!
I‟d love to shed a few more pounds
And trim my waist and thighs,
I‟ll have to work harder then
instead of telling lies!
So beds that swing or rock or lift,
Seem pretty good to me
They tone my flabby muscles
And help my poorly knees.

Different Stages in Nursery At Small World Day Nursery the children‟s learning
experiences are based around their individual
developmental needs.
From the age of 3 months, babies are given new
experiences according to their individual needs. At
such a young age babies learn through their senses.
Sounds, smells, physical contact, singing, games and
talking to your baby are vital; as well as encouraging
physical skills for crawling, standing and walking.
Enjoying early games such as peek-a-boo, clapping
and finding hidden objects will all be part of a child‟s
daily play. There will also be opportunities for one-
to-one interaction with staff and other children. We
also spend sometime each day playing outside. Now
and again, we take children for little walks in buggies
along the quiet roads behind the nursery.
From around the age of 12 months your child will
start to experience natural materials such as water
and sand as well as discovering the pleasures of play
dough, printing and brush painting- all with close
supervision of course!
From the age of 18 months your child will slowly be
integrated into the toddler room where they are
taught to become more independent, they will be
introduced to a wide range of arts and crafts to
develop their co-ordination and concentration.
Puzzles, number games, drawing and singing will all
be part of their daily routine.
From the age of 3-5 your child will follow a
curriculum of the Early Learning Goals set out by
the Government. Children at this age will be
encouraged to develop all the necessary skills and
knowledge to give them an early start to their
education. This is the age when true and strong
friendships are built. For more information on this please contact

Bicycle clips and the summer time… As I get older there‟s no doubt I am getting grumpier. For example, I often find myself having to
resist temptation to clip kids who drop litter round the ear. I‟d rather frequent pubs where you can
hear yourself speak. And most disturbingly I find myself drawn to the cheese board at the end of a
meal. It was back in the days when all I had to worry about was avoiding cabbage for school dinner and not sleeping in for my paper round that I first encountered a great friend of mine, Ben
Steadman. Over the years Ben would sit and watch Hatfield Town play cricket and had seen me
blossom from a short fat bloke who thought he was a white Gladstone Small into, well, a short fat
bloke who still believed he was Gladstone Small. Ben would turn up with his mates and had an
uncanny knack of speaking just loud enough so that you could hear his broad Yorkshire drawl as you
did battle. “That lad‟s neva bin sam since he tuk up with that lass from Thorne than knos,” he would
growl. “He tries hard, al give im that, but he neva bends his back when he‟s bowling,” was another. I
remember one game on a rare baking hot day after I had bowled 16 back-breaking overs and taken
seven wickets. The opposition‟s last desperate pair stood at the crease, needing about 50 to win
from the last over, when their number 11 skied one that was probably picked up by NASA as it shot
up into the stratosphere like a rocket.
I awaited its descent, wiping the sweat from my brow and steadying myself, visualising that old ball
nestling in my eager hands - determined to round off a superb performance - when I „overheard‟
Ben say to one of his pals: “A bet thee 50p he drops it, he‟s got hands like butter has that Pete
Wright. ”The psychological war was won and needless to say I spilled the catch. As we walked off
Ben looked me square in the eye and advised me I should “work on me catching, it‟s not all about
bowling that knos”. Aside from being a much-loved regular at the cricket field I would also bump
into Ben in the Ingram Arms snooker room and
he was one of the most talented players in the
village. The attached picture is Ben with none
other than Steve Davies, who at the time was the
world snooker champion. Another exciting event
at the time was the popular Christmas Handicap,
which my brothers and I would enter every year
in the hope of playing in the Boxing Day final. One
afternoon in late November I skived off college
and decided to join Ben for a quick frame, with
the aim of avoiding my essay on the political
systems of Western Europe. I had obviously been
skiving off a little to much as I gave Ben a real run
for his money, eventually losing on a tight pink, to
which Ben shook my hand. He admitted I would
be a dark horse for the Xmas tournament and
told me it was a good job he was on the handicap
committee that was sitting later that evening. It
was at this point that I realised I had shot myself
in the foot by my exploits and hatched a cunning
plan. Later that evening I turned up for a game knowing the committee would be around and waited
my turn to take the table. As luck would have it the only person who would play me was “Old Joe”,
who had one eye, a nervous twitch, weak bladder, and whose highest break had been four points for
the past eight years running. With the handicap committee deliberating nearby I set about giving Joe a lesson in missing, going in off, fouling, and generally attempting to make him look like a new
version of Fred Davies. Gradually, I realised my plan was working and I had become the subject the
handicap committee's attention, where a quite heated debate had erupted over someone‟s mark for
the tournament.”

A tell thee that lad‟s at least a 12 or a 10 player,” said Ben growing more and more agitated. “Ben
tha‟s talking rubbish, look at him, he can‟t even beat Joe and he hasn‟t got his good eye in today,”
came a reply.
I lost heavily to Joe and the handicap committee settled its dispute marking me with a 20 handicap
for the Christmas competition. As I left the pub Ben called me over to one side and congratulated
me on pulling a fast one, but whispered in my ear that he had placed £5 on me to get to at least the
quarter-finals at odds of 4-1. I gave Ben a wry smile and a knowing wink and departed into the
winter evening. I eventually lost in the quarters to “The Bull” - also known as former champion Daz
Batty. Ben and I would often laugh at this tale and discuss the finer points of cricket, snooker and
fishing as I sat nervously waiting to bat, something that Ben loved to see as he knew life would never
be dull with the white Gladstone Small at the crease. It was a huge blow when Ben passed away
suddenly earlier this year and I have to admit that I have truly missed him at the cricket field since. I
have always associated the start of the summer with Ben turning up on his bike, complete with
bicycle clips around his ankles, knowing that any dip in performance would result in the same caustic
wit and “constructive feedback”. Prior to Ben passing away I organised a challenge cricket match
between the Press Association from Howden and my personal Select XI. The teams were playing for
the Ben Steadman shield, in honour of his loyal support over the years. Ben got to witness two of
these matches which were both exciting affairs before he sadly left us. Next year I plan to introduce
our local rivals Hatfield Main into the tournament as I know that Ben would approve of seeing them
take on their traditional rivals. So farewell Ben, a good friend to many, father, husband and loyal supporter of Hatfield Town Cricket Club. Here is a summary of how the club has faired in they‟re

Hello, this is the November report from Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. In this issue we have
got lots of exiting news for you.
Harvest Festivals As we write we have just celebrated two
Harvest Festivals in school. The Key Stage 1 Harvest Festival was
attended by Rev. Paul Wilson and was excellent. Our Foundation
Stage 2 class shared all they knew about growing apples whilst Year 1
made a DVD (which was shown on our big screen at the Harvest
Festival) of the day they made bread in their classroom. They loved
eating it! Year 2 wrote and read out acrostic poems about Harvest.
KS2 Harvest Festival was all about food from different times and
places. YR3 informed the audience about Roman food. YR4 read out
what they learned about ancient Egyptian food. YR5 presented their
work on Cornish mining food. And finally YR6 finished off with their
research on wartime recipes. This was combined with some rousing
songs and enthusiastic dancing. The whole Harvest Festival was made
more colourful by children dressing in
costumes reflecting the period of
history they were speaking about. Joel
finished off by leading us in a Harvest prayer.
This year we had lots of food donated by the children and their
parents. The money we raised will all be going to a brilliant charity
called „High Notes‟ which is under the patronage of Lesley Garrett. It
takes music therapy into retirement homes to help people with
dementia.
The Classes FS2 are reading the story of „Goldilocks and the 3 bears‟.
They also had their first ICT lesson in the computer suite. YR1 are writing about Super Heroes and
finding out about the human body. YR2 are soon going on a trip to learn more about their topic on
Florence Nightingale. YR3 had a Roman day where they did Roman cooking, Roman numeracy, they
wrote a Roman menu and played Roman games. They also enjoyed a trip to Doncaster museum – to
look at Roman artefacts! YR4 have had an Egyptian day where they did Egyptian cooking, dancing,
singing and drawing. They made scarabs and learned about Egyptian hieroglyphics. YR5 have recently
been on a trip to Caphouse Colliery to learn about life down the pit! They have also baked and
learnt the history of the Cornish pasty. YR6 are continuing their topic about World War 2 and
recently went on a trip to Kelham Island where they learned what it was like to be an evacuee.
Music Workshop The whole school has enjoyed a music workshop this term. A man called
Steve Brown came in to tell us about Boomwackers and show how to use them. They were thin
tubes that when hit against foot, hand and floor made a boom sound. It was a great fun day and
everyone enjoyed learning about rhythm and pitch.
Everybody Writes Day National Everybody Writes Day is October 21st however we will
have to write and tell you about it in the next issue because nobody is sharing with us what is
happening yet!
Please send any questions / comments to the school address below.

Dear readers
You should hold the steering wheel with your hands at the „quarter-to three‟ or ten-to-two
position. Steering movements should be made by feeding the wheel through your hands.
You pass the wheel from one hand to the other at all times.
It sounds complicated, but this is the smoothest, safest and most natural way to control the steering.
If you are not used to steering in this way, your movements may at first feel they lack co-ordination.
But it only takes practice to develop the technique into a fluid, controlled movement. Once
perfected you will find it uncomfortable to steer in any other way.
Driving with one hand on the wheel arises simply through laziness. This gives you poor control at all
times, and puts you at a disadvantage if you need to react quickly. If, on a long drive, you find it tiring
to keep both hands in the correct place, your driving position may need adjustment.
There are many times, of course when one hand has to be taken off the wheel. Apart from changing
gear, opening a window or operating switches are common occasions. Try to do these things when
travelling in a straight line and in quiet traffic situations.
Many people let go of the wheel completely for a brief moment. How can they react if they have to
take avoiding action?
A common mistake after a turn is to let the steering‟s self-centring action spin the wheel straight.
While doing this, a driver has no control at all.
Some people hold the wheel with both hands close together at the top or the bottom. This is
neither relaxing nor appropriate for good control. Your hands should be opposite each other to allow quick steering in ether direction. Crossing arms must be avoided control is sacrificed since
crossing arms prevent more lock being added. Imagine you misjudge a corner and halfway through
you find it tightening unexpectedly. If your arms are already crossed, you prevent yourself steering
any further without a great deal of scrambling with the wheel.
Initially the wheel is turned very gently, and then the rate of rotation is slightly speeded up once the
car has settled into its cornering attitude. Applying this sensitivity means that the passengers hardly
feel changes of direction.
Power steering must be treated with respect
