Pregnant women often need ad-ditional iron, particularly if the mother-to-be is anemic, but taking iron supplements can be nauseating especially if morning sickness is an is-sue. Now, a study of twice-weekly iron supplements has found that this performs just as well as daily doses but with much better tolerability. Added bonus? There was a suggestion that the babies of these bi-weekly treatments had better cognitive development too!

Researchers at UC-San Francisco have taken a look at the relationship between epidural use during labor and the length of labor and have concluded epidurals in-crease labor time more substantially than previously thought. Current standards allow for an extra hour but their data suggests its likely more than 2 hours. At issue is whether interventions to advance labor and delivery might be attempted too early, potentially introducing more risks.

The standard for delivering babies by cae-sarian is to wait until 39 weeks gestational age to maximize infant development, but a study from Houston is proposing earlier

caesarian deliveries in women who have undergone previous caesarians to reduce complications for both mother and baby. Theyve determined that 38 weeks is bet-ter if there have been 2 previous c-sections and 37 weeks if there were 3 or more.

Pregnancy is often seen as a time when eating for two becomes a free ticket for excessive weight gain. And, the busy job of being a new mom can limit efforts to lose the weight. Ministers Baird and Fast Meet with Prime Minister of India

October 13, 2014 - New Delhi, India - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, meet with Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, to dis-cuss international security and the expanding bilateral relation-ship between Canada and India.

They reiterated Canadas keen-ness to build on our relationship in support of Indias prosperity and economic development, par-ticularly in the areas of energy and food security, education, in-novation and infrastructure.

They also discussed the im-portance of foreign investment into all regions of India and that Canada should be the preferred partner in that effort. Minister Fast looked to Indias new government to bring new energy and ambition to the CEPA negotiations. A CEPA would improve market access for goods and services, eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers, and boost economic growth for both Canada and India.

Finally, they discussed regional and international security issues, and the firm foundations of freedom, democ-racy, human rights and the rule of law upon which Canadian and Indian shared interests rest.

Ea r l i e r t h i s y e a r , t h e Abbotsford Hospice Socie ty entered in to Phase II of their on-going capital campaign to complete the con-struction of Holm-berg House. Last Tuesday, October 7th, as one of several unique initiatives be-ing undertaken this fall, the Holmberg House Matching Funds Challenge was launched.

Funded by Dave and Lee Holmberg who have already donated one-million dollars to the project this matching challenge will match up to $500,000 in donations between October 7th and December 25th, 2014. The matching challenge was launched as part of an intimate evening at the Holmbergs residence, where a series of powerful stories were shared with those in at-tendance. Already, tens-of-thousands

of dollars have been donated, and there is a renewed excitement around finally making hospice care a reality in Abbotsford.

With $4.3 million dollar still to raise, Abbotsford Hospice Society Board Chair David Turchen acknowledged that while there had been some chal-lenges in the past we have turned a corner. There is new leadership, a renewed vision, an end-goal that is well defined, and an excitement and

positivity in the community that is inspiring. He went on to note that our immediate goal is to raise $1.2 million dollars before the end of the year, to ensure the building reaches a clean lock-up.

We have a lot of exciting things on the go said Campaign Co-Chair Vi-jay Manuel, who is a Vice-Principal with the Abbotsford School District and Chair of Character Abbotsford. He went on to say that the matching campaign is just the first in a series

of new initiatives we are undertak-ing. While he didnt share specifics, Manuel is encouraging all the com-munities throughout the Fraser Valley to stay tuned. Gwynne Dyer to speak at UFV Oct. 22 on What the First World War Taught Us

Author, historian, and independent journalist Gwyn-ne Dyer returns to UFV Wednesday, Oct. 22 for his latest guest lecture, titled What the First World War Taught Us.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Abbotsford campus lec-ture theatre (B101), Dyers presentation looks back 100 years, when Canada sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers overseas to fight in a war that he feels didnt threaten Canadians in any way.

Almost a quarter of those soldiers were killed or wounded, notes Dyer in his lecture synopsis. In a country that then had only

eight million people, the tragedy left scars that never really healed. Our attitudes to war and our whole foreign policy are still shaped, for good and for ill, by the First World War, and its high time to reconsider them.

Dyer has worked as a col-umnist, broadcaster and

lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years, but he was originally trained as a historian. Born in Newfoundland, he re-ceived degrees from Cana-dian, American, and British universities, finishing with a PhD in Military and Middle Eastern History from the University of London. He served in three navies and held academic appointments at the Royal Military Acad-emy Sandhurst and Oxford University before launching his twice-weekly column on international affairs, which is published by more than 175 papers in 45 countries.

Academic career is memorable for UFV Young Distinguished Alumni winner Tanya Jonker

Tanya Jonker will never forget her years at the University of the Fraser Valley. They helped launch her into an exciting academic career researching the mecha-nisms of memory retrieval.

Now a PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo, Jonker graduated from UFV in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She has been chosen as the Young Distinguished Alumni award winner at UFV for 2014.

Jonker received her award, which goes to an outstanding UFV alumnus under the age of 35, from UFV Alumni As-sociation chair Justin P. Goodrich at the UFV Giving Thanks donor and alumni appreciation event on Oct. 8.

Im very honoured to receive this award, she noted. Its not something I expected so early in my career.

Jonker, who attended high school in Abbotsford, is also a Vanier Scholar. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar-ships program (worth $50,000 annually to recipients) is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of

excellence in research and higher learn-ing. Among several other awards, she also received the prestigious Michael Smith Foreign Studies scholarship, en-abling her to travel to England to further her knowledge in neuroscience.

My research focuses on the mecha-nisms underlying forgetting in human memory, Jonker says. Specifically, I am currently interested in the cognitive mechanism of inhibition. According to an inhibition account of forgetting, memory representations can be sup-pressed to facilitate retrieval of other related memories. For instance, when you retrieve some information, it can result in forgetting related informa-tion. Although this account is widely accepted, I am interested in testing its viability as a theory.

To this end, I have been exploring retrieval-induced forgetting. In recent work, I am applying a context approach as an alternative explanatory framework for retrieval-induced forgetting.

Once she earns her doctorate, Jonker hopes to pursue a career teaching and researching at a university.

School Trustee Preet Rai is running for a third term in the upcoming election on November 15. Preet has been on the Board of Education for six years. It is an honor and privilege to serve as a School trustee and it only happens with public support.

My upbringing instilled both a desire and a sense of responsibility around family, community involvement and education. It was a driving factor when I first ran for school trustee and it is the reason I am seeking re-election.

A chartered accountant from India, Preet immigrated to the United Kingdom, in 1992, where he worked for the Scottish Government. Then, to Canada in 1995 and has been working for the Govern-ment of British Columbia since 1997.

Having a global perspective, I have always taken a keen interest in com-munity, social and cultural activities. My wife is a teacher in Abbotsford. We have three children; all of them have attended or attend Abbotsford public schools. My mother was a teacher and

my father retired as a Colonel from the Indian Army.

In my six years of being a School Trustee, I have particularly enjoyed visiting schools throughout the district. I have relished reading to kindergarten students and answering well thought out questions by middle & high school

students. Being in a cold dunk tank on sports days was chilly at the time but is warm memories now.

In my close interactions with students at Abbyfest, Heritage fair and other community events, I have witnessed the pride that they feel in volunteering and displaying their talent, which in turn

gives me energy and keeps me focused on looking into best opportunities to prepare students to reach their full po-tential and be successful. I believe In Abbotsford School Districts strategic direction focusing on student success with individual learning, choice and parent involvement.

Rais community involvement is not limited to his role as a school trustee. He has served on the Community of Character Council, Abbotsford Youth Commission, Abby Fest Board, Cycling for Diversity, MSA Museum Board, the Reach Board, Literacy Matters Board, Sister City Committee, the Canuck Place Campaign Executive Committee, and the South Asian Taskforce for the fund raising of the new Canuck Place Hospice built in Abbotsford in 2014. He immensely enjoys organizing over 100 volunteers yearly for Abbyfest.

Prime Minister STEPHEN HARPER announces intention to double the

childrens fitness tax credit

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced our Governments inten-tion to double the Childrens Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) and make it refundable. The maximum amount of expenses that may be claimed under the credit will be doubled from its current limit to $1,000 for the 2014 tax year and subsequent tax years, and the credit will be made refund-able effective for the 2015 and subsequent tax years. He was joined by Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment and Member of Par-liament for Oshawa, and Erin OToole, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade and Member of Parlia-ment for Durham.

The CFTC was introduced by our Gov-ernment in Budget 2006 to help promote physical fitness among children by making it more affordable for Canadian families to register their kids in fitness activities. When fully implemented, the proposed enhancements to the CFTC that are being announced today will fulfill a commitment made by our Government in 2011. The enhancements will deliver additional tax

relief to about 850,000 families who enrol their children in eligible fitness activities.

Parents will be able to take advantage of the new $1,000 maximum limit in the spring of 2015 when they file their tax returns for 2014. The credit will be made refundable as of the 2015 tax year, increasing benefits to low-income families claiming it for that year and subsequent years.

Our Government tabled a Ways and Means Motion in the House of Commons today which provides additional information on the proposed enhancements.

The release of ghazal collection that has been passionately written by Baldev Seehra , a Canadian scientist, has been offered at the Panjab University. It was Professor A.S. Ahluwalia Convener-secretary PUBDAA and Chairperson of Botany De-partment, Professor Neelam Grover- the Dean Alumni relations, Professor P.K. Khosla- Vice Chancellor of Shoolini University, Solan and Professor S.C. Verma-

the President PUBDAA, who released the Ghazal collection book . The pres-tigious function was held in the Golden Jubilee Hall of Panjab University at the PU Botany Department, during the Annual Alumni Get-together.

Mr. Seehra is at the moment employed at the Occupa-tional Health and Safety office in Vancouver in the capacity of a specialist of pests management. Baldev, had earlier another col-lection of soul searching poems published by the name of Adhurey Khaab, in 2010. In 2014, its Chetna Prakashan from Ludhiana, published his new collec-tion of ghazals called Baraf Baniya Han.

Baldev Seehra had got his early education from Tanda Urmar in Hoshiarpur Dis-trict. After completing his Botany post graduation from Panjab University,

C h a n -d i g a r h , S e e h r a had tak-e n u p a job in S G G S College, in Chandigarh and then shifted to Fizi Iceland. He then settled in Canada. Seehra has a strong love of his mother tongue and continued to follow his love of writing poems. His ef-forts at writing the ghazals have paid off as his style of writing, the language and the content of the published book have been greatly appreciated by Panjab Uni-versitys Professor Yog Raj Angirish, from the Panjabi Department. The release of the collection and the introduction of the Cana-dian scientist cum poet cum ex-post graduate student Baldev Seehra ,received huge applause that rang out in the Botany department.
