Occasionally we send out announcements and reminders about things that are happening

around the parish. If you would like to receive a text or email to keep you up to date, please text

“Add” to 84576. You will receive a prompt from Flocknote to add your information to our

The Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama and the Catholic Lawyers of the St. Thomas More Society cordially invite all judges, lawyers, law students, legal related professionals and the public they serve to the annual Red Mass on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 12:10pm at The Cathedral of St. Paul, 2120 Third Avenue No., Birmingham, AL. The Red Mass is a Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year to invoke divine guidance for all who seek and administer justice. This Thirteenth Century European custom received its name from the red color of the vestments worn by the celebrant and the scarlet robes worn by the Lord High Justices. The Red Mass came to the United States in 1877 and has been celebrated in Alabama since 1974. The celebrant will be The Most Reverend Robert J. Baker. A reception for the legal professionals in attendance will follow in the Family Life Center. For more information contact Rick DiGiorgio, 205-271-7105, [email protected].

EDUCATIONAL CORNER

FIRST READING: Exodus was written around the time of the return of the exiles of Israel from Babylon in the 6th century BC. These sacred

books were presented to the people to help restore and purify Israel after its long and devastating division and the insidious influence of pagan neighbors and oppressors. The Lord's support of the Israelites in their battle against the Amalekites is evidence of his continued faithfulness to the covenant despite the complaints of his people. Moses' gestures of prayer during this battle, exhibited by extended hands, demonstrates the importance of prayer in accomplishing God's will. (CCC 2118-2119) RESPONSORIAL PSALM: This beautiful little song gives us the assurance of God's protection. It is a blessing given to someone going on a dangerous journey, whether a soldier going on a campaign or a pilgrim returning home from the Church. People look anxiously at the wooded hills. Will God protect them on their journey? The speaker declares that God is not confined to a place or a time, that every step is guarded; night and day, God watches over their every movement. (CCC 239) SECOND READING: Paul continues to write to Timothy about the fact that there will come a time that some people will live without virtue and morals. They would attempt to entice weaker believers into their own self-destructive ways through false teachings. In dealing with these issues, Paul encouraged Timothy to rely on the inspired books of Scripture in his teaching and pastoral work. The Old Testament books point the way to Christ and remain of great value to the Christian community. Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition form the basis of all Church teaching and both are NECESSARY for the fullest understanding of the Christian message. (105-108, 120-123, 128-130) GOSPEL: This Holy Scripture teaches the value of perseverance in prayer and of not losing heart in our petitions. The judge in this story was not a man of faith or a very kind person. He finally grants the widow her request simply to put an end to her unrelenting requests. A God who loves us, therefore, will be even more generous if we remain faithful disciples. The closer to God that we become in our faith and grow in communion with God, we become more closely aligned with His will. The Church fulfills the Lord's precept to "pray always" in the Liturgy of the Hours, whose purpose is to sanctify the entire day and all human activity..(CCC 2098,2573,2613,2710)

OTHER ACTS OF DIVINE WORSHIP—SACRED TIMES: (C.1244-1253) The first canon law regarding "sacred times" states "It is within the competence of the supreme ecclesiastical authority alone to establish , transfer or abolish feast days or days of penance which are common to the universal Church. Feast days: #1 Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church. Also to be observed are the day of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary Mother of God and her Immaculate Conception and Assumption, Saint Joseph, the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul and finally, All Saints. NEXT WEEK WE WILL COVER: DAYS OF PENANCE. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR PRIEST ALL OVER THE WORLD.
