October 14th Program
Peggy Martin began quilting in 1981, piecing and quilting everything by hand. A few years later,
when quicker methods were being discovered, she became hooked on finding faster, easier ways
to make quilts. When she began teaching in 1985, she continued to develop more streamlined,
fast, fun methods of working. She enjoys expanding on traditional quilts with new variations and
color-play. Her favorite quilts are those which are fast, easy to piece, and offer many design
possibilities.
Peggy has been presenting programs and workshops at guilds and seminars since 1988. She was
selected as Professional Quilter's Teacher of the Year in 2010. She is an award-winning quilter and
has exhibited in many national shows. She lives in San Diego, California and is married with two grown sons.

Halloween mood.
At the October meeting, Robin Tetef, Peggy
Fatur, and I with let you in on our new fundraiser for

SFVQA by the end of the project. Tune in for details.
September was a busy month.

Veteran’s Quilt Workshops
Hello everyone. There are just two more Veteran's Quilt
workshops left this year. If you are interested in helping us,
come to the VA at Woodley and Plummer and join us in the
Recreation room from 10-3. We tie quilts or sew tops,
whatever you would like to do. All the materials are provided
for tying. We will NOT be meeting in December. For more
information, call Karen Van Den Brink.

Thank you for the fabric, books and quilt related stuff donat-
ed to Ways and means. We do have a need for any tchotchke
or knick knack type of items to round out future opportunity
baskets. Our circle of happiness as Ways and Means makes
baskets of opportunity from your donated treasures. See you
all next month in front of the soda machine.

WHAT IS A "UFO"?
What is a UFO? (Unfinished Object) or NFUFO? (Nearly
finished UFO) or how about BBUFO? (Barely begun UFO)
and then there is WISPs? (Works in SLOW process).
Whatever you call them we'll bet you have several hidden away
in your sewing room, perhaps in a brown bag? A specially
purchased zippered plastic tote?
Robin Tetef and Peggy Fatur would like to challenge you to
finish them. Watch for the "SFVQA UFO Challenge". Rules
will be presented in the next newsletter and at the October
meeting....start getting them together!
Membership
We extend a warm "Welcome Back!" to Faye Ayers.
If you did not pick up your roster at the September meeting,
please pick it up at the Membership table.
Please note in your blue roster Leslie Gellerman's correct
phone number, 818-383-0057.
Hospitality
A reminder for the October birthday quilters, it is your turn to
bring the desserts, fruit or vegetables to our meeting. If there
are any leftovers, be sure to pick them up after the
meeting. Also, if any of you are away during your birthday
month, please feel free to bring desserts to any other meeting.
The SFVQA initials and your name can be cross-stitched, embroidered, painted, appliqued, whatever. See members' completed nametags for further ideas. After sewing block together, you can add batting/backing and quilt it. You can also finish it by facing it or by adding binding.
Cut the following fabric pieces:
(1/4 inch seam allowance included in sizes) #1. 9 squares: 1 5/8 x 1 5/8 (finish at 1 1/8"). Cut 5 muslin or light fabric and Cut 4 calico/floral/patterned/etc. #2. 2 strips sides: 1" x 3 7/8" (finish at 1/2" x 3 3/8") #3. 1 strip top: 1" x 4 7/8" (finishes at 1/2" x 4 3/8") #4: 1 strip bottom: 1 1/4" x 4 7/8" (finishes at 3/4" x 4 3/8")
TO MAKE YOUR PIECED BORDER FIT YOUR QUILT YOU PROBABLY WILL NEED TO ADD A SPACER BORDER. TO FIGURE THE WIDTH TO CUT THE SPACER BORDER, MEASURE THE LENGTH OF THE PIECED BORDER AT THE EDGE THAT ATTACHES TO THE QUILT. THEN MEASURE THE LENGTH OF YOUR QUILT DOWN THE CENTER. SUBTRACT THE QUILT FROM THE BORDER AND DIVIDE BY 2 (YOU HAVE TO SPLIT THE AMOUNT BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES.) THEN ADD ½” FOR SEAM ALLOWANCES AND THIS IS THE WIDTH YOU CUT THAT SPACER BORDER. IF YOUR QUILT IS SQUARE, THE SPACER BORDER WILL BE THE SAME FOR ALL FOUR SIDES. HOWEVER, IF YOUR QUILT IS RECTANGULAR, YOU MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT WIDTH SPACER BORDER FOR THE SIDES (LENGTH) THEN FOR THE TOP AND BOTTOM (WIDTH). SO YOU WILL NEED TO MEASURE BOTH LENGTH AND WIDTH AND MAKE TWO CALCULATIONS AS ABOVE. THE BORDER WIDTH THAT YOU ARRRIVED AT FOR THE TOP AND BOTTOM IS THE WIDTH YOU CUT THE SIDES BORDERS. AND IN TURN, THE MEASUREMENTS FOR THE SIDES GO ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM. REMEMBER YOU MUST ALSO DETERMINE HOW LONG TO CUT THESE BORDERS AND MATCH YOUR QUILT AND BORDER AT FIRST AND THIRD QUARTERS AND IN THE MIDDLE AND SEW WITH THE QUILT TO THE FEED DOGS.
Our Corresponding Secretary is in need of “get well cards”
and “sympathy cards” Please bring your donation of cards to
our next meeting to Judith Tetove. Thank you.

BLOCK PARTY _ AUTUMN LEAVES (9̂ ^ block) — DUE OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER 2013
Leaf fabric: deep, rich jewel tones in fall colors. Cut three squares 4" x 4" and three squares 3i/2" x 31/2"
Background: warm cream/beige/off-white tone on tones (no puire whites). Cut two squares 4" x 4" and two squares 3i/2" x 31/2"
Half-square triangle units: (for T block)
* Place one 4" colored square and one 4" background square right sides together. Draw a diagonal on the lighter side. Stitch a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the diagonal. Cut apart on the drawn line. Open each unit and press seams to the darker side. Trim each half- square unit to 3i/2", keeping the seams on the diagonal.
/J
Repeat from * to make a total of four half-square triangle units..
Stems: Cut a \ bias strip from the remaining colored square. Sew the strip into a tube, right side out, with an 1 / 8" seam. Insert a bias bar, or other 1 / 4" firm strip, and press seam to the back to make a 1 / 4'' stem. Applique the stem diagonally down the center of one of the backgroimd squares.
Join the units in rows of three and then join the three rows to create the leaf block as shown. Be sure seams lie in opposite directions when joining the rows. The stem must be appliqued onto the bottom background square before joining.
