The purpose of the ASI Family & Friends Reunion is two-fold. It provides an annual opportunity for K-State Animal Sciences & Industry alumni and friends to reconnect with their collegiate classmates, faculty and staff. At the same time, reunion attendees are able to see and hear everything currently taking place within ASI and across campus. The idea is to create excitement and a sense of belonging among our extended K-State ASI family.

The reunion also provides the perfect venue for the annual presentation of the Don L. Good Impact Award. This allows each award winner an opportunity to interact with a large portion of the K-State ASI family, including students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. Given the influential nature of these award winners, this should provide a unique and memorable opportunity for every event attendee, every year.

Established in 2015 by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council Inc. (LMIC), the Don L. Good Impact Award is to be given to a person, persons or entity that has had a positive impact on the livestock and meat industry and/or agriculture. This award could also be given to a person who has had a positive influence on educating and developing students to be great contributors to agriculture. The recipient might include someone who has had a large impact on agriculture via the media or the political arena.

The Don L. Good Impact Award is intended to be given annually, provided LMIC identifies a deserving individual or entity to receive the award. The committee recommends preference be given to people with Kansas State University ties, but does not limit the award to only K-State graduates. This award has the potential to cultivate relationships and links with others outside of our university.

The K-State ASI Family & Friends Reunion will be the venue at which the award will be presented. The award ceremony will be the highlight of the event. The physical award will be an item that may serve as a lasting legacy for the recipients and their families.

The Stockman of the Year selection committee will have the adjunct duty of fielding nominees and making a recommendation to the LMIC Board for the annual Don L. Good Impact Award recipient. The full LMIC Board will vote on the recommendation and a two-thirds majority of the directors present is required for affirmation.

AX CattleFax, an organization created by cattle

producers, has been selected to receive the 2018 Don L. Good Impact Award.

Started in 1968, CattleFax is a member-owned organization that serves producers in all segments of the cattle and beef business. For half a century, it has been a global leader in beef industry research, analysis and information. Its exclusive industry database has set the standard for market information and analysis.

Information was critical in the 1960s to cattle producers, who believed their negotiating power for marketing their animals needed improvement. The answer was partially found in mining and sharing data.

“It felt like we needed our own information and data sharing business, where you could see some of the trends more frequently during the year, and also have our own double check on the system,” says Randy Blach, CattleFax CEO.

CattleFax’s first market analyst, Topper Thorpe, became the CattleFax general manager in 1972. For 30 years, he provided a steady hand for staff leadership and guidance. According to Blach, Thorpe helped revolutionize both the gathering and sharing of market information in the cattle industry, and allowed CattleFax to deliver the most complete, accurate information from which beef producers could make better marketing decisions.

advice to customers when developing a marketing plan and a sound risk management program, including an assessment of their break-evens, as well as evaluating different marketing alternatives.

For 50 years, CattleFax’s focus has been information on, by and for the beef industry. They are the global leader in beef industry research, analysis and information. The CattleFax staff monitors more than just cattle markets. Grain, weather, beef demand and competing proteins – not just domestically but globally – are carefully monitored. Keeping up with the times to make sure producers have quality information on a timely basis, which allows them to make informed marketing decisions, is a daily challenge for the staff.

“The Kansas connection has been a key to success for CattleFax,” Blach explains. “CattleFax has been blessed to have a great working relationship with Kansas State University’s faculty and staff and the Kansas Livestock Association’s leadership and staff.”

Through the years, Kansans have played an integral role in CattleFax’s success. Blach credits many current and former board and staff members with Kansas roots who have contributed greatly to the organization’s vision.

CattleFax is not a stakeholder in the market; they are an information and analysis service designed to meet the unique needs of the beef and agricultural industries. When it comes to providing cattle producers with the tools they need to make profitable decisions — CattleFax is the deciding factor.

Under Cliff ’s leadership, the Houghton Family was involved in several ground-breaking K-State ASI research projects between the 1950s and ’70s. Cliff and Bernice hosted numerous K-State ASI classes, when countless students were able to learn about beef cattle production and refine their skills on the family ranch located in southwest Mitchell County. Faculty and students were always welcome at Bernice’s kitchen table for one of her legendary country family dinners.

The couple’s four children have strong K-State ties, three with ASI degrees. Keith, and wife, Debra, own and operate Ringneck Ranch, an upland game bird hunting operation on the home ranch near Tipton; Leon recently retired from a 31-year career as the Purdue University beef herdsman; Kathy has excelled in her 40-plus-year career as a healthcare professional in the Kansas City area, and continues today as a perioperative nurse liaison at KU Med; Patsy has devoted the past 30-plus years to large-scale beef heifer development, mostly through the ownership and management of Heartland Cattle Co., McCook, Neb.

The family lost Cliff in 1988 and Bernice in 2017. The family strives to carry forward their previous generations’ devotion to family, community and country.

Drs. Kelly and Marcie Lechtenberg are proud supporters of K-State’s missions. The family’s passion for K-State began when Kelly entered veterinary school in 1983 while Marcie was teaching at Riley County High School. She earned her master’s while he completed his vet training. Cooperation between the Colleges of Ag and Vet Med allowed Kelly to complete simultaneous DVM and PhD programs.

Kelly’s education was critical to founding companies in Nebraska and Kansas that provide research services focused on the development and regulatory approval of safe, efficacious products used daily in the production of multiple livestock species around the world. The family also has a commercial feedlot, a grazing operation, an iso-wean swine facility and raises diversified crops. Marcie is the K-State College of Human Ecology Couple and Family Therapy program clinical director.

The Lechtenberg daughters and their husbands are all K-Staters. Jana and husband, Drew Biery, both teach at Manhattan High School. Drs. Brooke and Charley Cull are both research scientists in Oakland, Neb. Dr. Paige Andersen opened TimberCreek Veterinary Hospital in Manhattan in 2016. Paige’s husband, Max, owns Andersen Farrier Service. The Lechtenberg family holds 18 K-State degrees and grandsons (Jackson, Carter & Cannon) can already be seen wearing a lot of purple. Paige and Max will welcome a baby girl to the world of purple this fall.

The Lechtenbergs have been continuous supporters of the Family & Friends Reunion as an example of the how the purple magic of the K-State experience can help foster lifelong relationships.

Richard owns and operates a grazing and backgrounding operation located approximately 60 miles southeast of Manhattan, Kan. He receives around 8,000 head of three-weight, high-risk calves annually and grows them out to eight-weights. For most of the year, the cattle are on native grass supplemented with distillers grains. By mid-winter, the calves are in a drylot receiving corn silage.

Known for being an independent thinker, Richard has two degrees from Kansas State University, including a bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering and a master’s in Agribusiness. Richard also holds a law degree. Richard has participated in numerous cattle research trials with the K-State Animal Sciences & Industry (ASI)department and is a proud member of the LMIC Board of Directors.

A staunch supporter of the K-State ASI department, Richard generously served as the lead donor for the Stanley Stout Marketing Center construction project. The Stanley Stout Center is currently used for a multitude of purposes including serving as the venue for the K-State ASI Family & Friends Reunion.

Richard has three children, three granddaughters, a dog and a menagerie of cats.

The K-State Department of Animal Sciences & Industry serves students, livestock producers and the animal and food industries through teaching, research and education. The K-State ASI Department prepares students for careers in the animal and food industries. The curriculum includes the study of nutrition, reproduction, genetics, behavior, meat science and food science with production, management and agribusiness skills. K-State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well-being of Kansas. The K-State Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC) is dedicated to facilitating interdisciplinary research that identifies and addresses issues and opportunities facing animal agriculture and the efficient production of food. LMIC solicits volunteer contributions including time, money, land, livestock, equipment and other bequests in support of approved priorities and initiatives within the Department of Animal Sciences & Industry, in cooperation with the K-State College of Agriculture.
