FREQUENTLY CALLED NOS. +SCRIPTURE GUIDE+

It was the Dark Ages. It seemed like “you and me against the world.” Life was so bleak, so blurred, so uncertain. I was having a terrible life: I had to make both ends meet to provide the needs of my family, so I had to teach here and there, day and night; I took the risk of putting up Aquinas Tutorial Center with a limited capital; I had to communicate constantly to my children to explain what was going on in the family; I had to attend to a lot of meetings and pre-pare numerous reports in school; and to top it all, I was having a very miserable marital life. I was prac-tically torn into pieces.

My cell phone rang. “Hello Ma’am. Good morn-ing.” It was Fr. Stephen Redillas, O.P., the Secretary General of Letran-Calamba. “We perfectly under-stand the difficulty you are going through right now. I have some news for you. I know this would not be easy for you but I hope you will consider it favora-bly.” I was stunned, nervous, frightened, excited….I really cannot name my feelings at that mo-ment. “What is it Father?,” I inquired. He said, “We decided to give you the Deanship of the Arts and Sciences Department and also a concurrent Dean of the Graduate School.” I was speechless, hon-ored….I really had mixed feelings. “But Father, why me? Why not other people? After all the chaos in school a few days ago you are giving me this big responsibility?” I was already crying in the midst of the crowd because at that time I was at Sioland buying some stuff I needed for the tutorial center. The Arts and Sciences Department consists of sev-eral programs and about a hundred faculty members with variety of personalities. I cannot imagine myself

heading the biggest Department in school. Then he said, “Ma’am it’s not your fault. We trust you and we still believe in you. We know you can make it. So, please consider it favorably.” I was astonished with what I heard. I suddenly felt myself rising from the underground, seeing that little light ahead. “Father, thank you so much for the trust. I will pray over it and I will let you know of my decision soon.”

True enough, I took the challenge. The trust given to me served as my strength. Life is a TEST and a

TRUST.

Life is a TEST. When I face trials and difficulties I often tell myself, “here we go again, the Lord is em-bracing me, the Lord is kissing me” just to make myself feel better, “everything will pass…..in His time….” Then I surrender everything to God. I did learn from these tests. I became a better person, stronger, tougher, more understanding, more flexible, more open…… What I didn’t realize was that God was testing my character, discovering my weakness and preparing me for more responsibilities. I didn’t realize that everything was a growth opportunity to deepen my character, to demonstrate love, and to be more dependent on God.

Life is a TRUST. The Lord has entrusted me a lot of

responsibilities: my four children, my work, my career, my family, my community. This trust makes me realize that all the more I have to be more responsi-ble. I sometimes complain and say “Lord, why me?” But I believe He understands and accepts me as I am. He can bear with my complaints, he can patiently listen to me, and waits until I come to my senses. Afterwards, I feel better, more secure, and more confident about myself.

He trusts me so much that he rewards me with three things: affirmation, promotion, and celebra-tion. Affirmation: “Well done, dear daughter! You really are good at that! Keep up the good work,!” the Lord says. Promotion: “Since you’ve given your best in the tasks I’ve given you, you deserve to be given more, bigger ones,” the Lord adds. Celebra-tion: “As a reward of being my responsible steward, I will invite you to share my everlasting happiness,” the Lord says.

Lord, help me to depend on you in times of trials and difficulties. Remind me always of your promise that you will never forsake me. Make me more responsible of all the things you have en-trusted to me. Affirm me more, pat me at the back, embrace me, kiss me, tell me you love me, assure me of your unconditional love, these are what I need, especially at this point in my life. Make me stronger to do the greater tasks you have given me and are in store for me, so I may share with your everlasting happi-ness. AMEN!

CATHOLIC FAITH:

October 7

Adapted from The Liturgical Year Book V by:

Abbot Gueranger, O.S.B.

"Such is Mary’s Rosary, a new and fruitful vine, which began to blossom at Gabriel’s salu-tation, and whose fragrant garlands form a link between earth and heaven." Abbot Guer-anger

It is customary with men of the world to bal-ance their accounts at the end of the year and determine their profits. The Church is now pre-paring to do this as she comes to the Feast of Christ the King, and that of All Saints and All Souls and the end of the Liturgical Year.

But today’s feast is a reckoning even more solemn, the profits even bigger: the Church opens her balance-sheet with the gain accruing to Our Lady from the mysteries, which compose the entire liturgical cycle. Christmas, the cross, the triumph of Jesus, these produce the holi-ness of us all; but before and above all, the holiness of Mary. The crown, which the Church thus offers today to the Queen of heaven and earth, is made up of the triple crown of those sanctifying mysteries; joyful, sorrowful and glorious. These were the cause of her joy, the cause of her sorrow and of her glory.

The Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Myster-ies and the glorious Mysteries in the life of Je-sus her Divine Son. They are an integral part of her life as well. Such is Mary’s Rosary; a new and fruitful vine, which began to blossom at Gabriel’s salutation, and whose fragrant gar-lands form a link between earth and heaven.

In its present form, St. Dominic made the rosary known to the world at the time of the struggles with the Albigensians, that social war of such ill-omen for the Church. The rosary was then of more help than armed forces against the power of Satan; it is now the Church’s last resource.

It would seem that, the ancient forms of social prayer being no longer loved by the peo-ple, the Holy Spirit has willed by this easy and ready summary of the liturgy to maintain, in the isolated devotion of these unhappy times, the essential of that life of prayer, faith, and Chris-tian virtue, which the public celebration of the Divine Office formerly kept up among the na-tions.

This simple weapon given by the Mother of

God and conceived by the eternal Wisdom of God is far-reaching in its effects. It leads wan-dering man to the Queen of Mercy, it destroys ignorance of the fundamentals of the Faith, ignorance which is the food of heresy, and it teaches him to find once more ‘the paths con-secrated by the Blood of the Man-God, and by the tears of His Mother.’ (Pope Leo XIII, Sept. 8, 1892 Encyc. On the Rosary)

Pope Leo XIII and every Pontiff of modern times has pointed out, over and over again, that the Holy Rosary is the means of salvation more than once experienced by our fathers. In fact, Pope Leo consecrated the entire month of Oc-tober to the Holy Rosary, this devotion that is so dear to heaven. Pope Leo honored Our Lady in her litanies with a new title, Queen of the most holy rosary; and raised this day to the honor of a second class feast with a proper Office. This feast is also a memorial of glorious victories, which do honor to Our Lady of the Rosary.

Heaven itself corroborated these honors given to Our Lady. Only a short time after this, Our Lady of Fatima appeared in 1917, and in October of that year, the very month dedicated to the Holy Rosary, She announced to the world: "I am the Lady of the Rosary."

Let us list here a small fraction of the victo-ries directly obtained from God through the Holy Rosary.

• The Battle of Lepanto which saved Rome and Vienna, and thus the Pope and the Emperor, from Moslem subjugation

• The deliverance of Vienna by Sobieski

• The victory given to Prince Eugene of Peterwardein

• The raising of the siege of Corfu

• The taking of Belgrade

• The deliverance of Brazil from Commu-nism in this century

• The withdrawal from Soviet Troops from

Austria on Oct. 26, 1955

On this Feast of the Holy Rosary, the joys experienced on the other feasts of the Mother of God, are all gathered up and resumed in this one, for us, for the angels, and for Our Lady herself. Like the angles then, let us offer, to-gether with Mary, the homage of our just delight to the Son of God, her Son, her King and ours.

The mysteries of Jesus and Mary are our

instruction and our hope. The Church prays today that they may also be our rule of life and our pledge of eternal salvation. That is the power of the Holy Rosary.

Our Lady’s mysteries are before all time in God’s sight, like those of Her Divine Son; like these they will endure for all eternity; like them they rule the ages, which circle round the Word and Mary, preparing for both in the Old Testa-ment and perpetuating their presence by the ceaseless praise of the most holy Trinity, in whose name all Christians are baptized.

The Rosary honors all these mysteries. Today’s feast is a glance back upon the cycle of Redemption as it draws to a close. From these mysteries and today’s view of them all, we learn from Our Lady herself in this passage from Proverbs, which the Church applies to Mary: "Now therefore, my children, consider my ways; imitate me, that you may find happiness." ‘Blessed is he that watches at her gates.’

Let us pray to Mary, rosary in hand, thinking of her at the same time, meditating on her life and her greatness, and watching, for even just 15 minutes each day, at the entrance to the palace of this incomparable Queen. The more faithful we are to the Rosary, the more assured will be our salvation and our progress in true life.

Let us congratulate the Queen of the Holy Rosary on her perfect life, all truth, and justice, and meekness, which won her the love of the supreme King. Let us proclaim the nobility of her race, unequalled in the whole world. All grace, all light, all life, are to be found in our Lady; by her holy rosary she has multiplied flowers and fruits in the garden of the Church. Every offering acceptable to God comes from Mary, with and by Jesus.

The Rosary, piously meditated, prepares us for the Sacrifice of the altar, that august memorial of the mysteries which it imprints in the heart and mind of the Christian. Why not then, pray the holy rosary in the car as one drives to holy Mass. Pray it in thanksgiving on the way home.

Of Our Lady, the Offertory of today’s Mass says: "In me is all grace of the way and of truth: in me is all hope of life and of virtue: I have flowered forth like a rose planted by the brooks of water."

Karunungan: Bro. Allan Rodriguez

(from Good News)

Deanna Aikman is not an ordinary woman. She is not an ordinary Christian. She is extraordinary. Deanna attends

daily mass. Friday Eucharistic adoration, and courageously share her faith with others, most often without spoken

words. What makes Deanna extraordinary? She has Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and is confined to a wheel chair with

no use of her arms and legs. Her speech is hardly intelligible. However, her mind is completely clear. Many people

would ask what a person could contribute with such physical limitations. Deanna is perfect example of a tool in the

hands of God. Through her intercession and empowerment of people, Deanna has inspired the defeat of proposal B (a

proposal for legalization of assisted suicide in Michigan in 1998), the establishment of the Our Lady Guadalupe Mis-

sion project (gathering people to pray outside abortion sites throughout North America with an image of Our Lady of

Guadalupe near her feast day) initiating Friday Eucharistic Adoration at the local Catholic high school, and numerous

other apostolic works.

Now what is on the heart of this saintly woman? Deanna does not wallow in suffering; she is filled with hope. Re-

cently Deanna was invited to visit the local Catholic high school to speak with the senior theology classes. She e-mailed

her message to Sister Sarah Burdick who choked up as she read the following message to her students: “First, let me say

how much I love to be here with you each Friday in the presence of the Lord. He puts a special love in my heart for you.

I want to tell you about the amazing things that the Lord is doing for me. I was diagnosed with ALS 11 years ago when

our children were 7, 4 and 8 months. My illness is typically radically progressive, shutting down the motor neurons and

leading to complete paralysis. Patients often require a feeding tube and assistance with breathing within two years. They

take long lists of medications to help them manage the physical psychological effects of this challenging disease. The

average life expectancy is about three years. The Lord has sustained me physically so that even after 11 years, I have no

need for feeding tube, breathing apparatus or any medication.”

“When I learned ALS affects a person’s ability to speak and to swallow, my heart sank. What would I do without

Holy Communion? I don’t remember what I said to the Lord, but I have always had a sense that He would take care of

that and not to be concerned. So I never have. It is a miracle. Not only that, but He fills me with His peace and joy so

that I am absolutely astonished – there’s no other word for it. It doesn’t make sense that I could be happy but I can tell

you one thing – whatever situation you are in, there’s

always enough grace for you to handle it. That must be

why God is always saying to His people, “Be not

afraid!”

MARIE Michael B. Balba

(alay kay Anna Marie Pascua)

M-araming salamat sa'yo kaibigan

Pagkat nakilala kita ng lubusan

Sa lahat ng oras lagi mong tandaan

Kaibigan ikaw ay di ko iiwan.

A-ko ay nagagalak ng makilala ka

Pagkat kaibigan okey kang kasama

Sana ay malaman sa tuwi-tuwina

Ako ay karamay sa saya o dusa.

R-elaks ka lang lagi sa bawat sandali

Sa mga problema huwag pagagapi

Ako ay narito isipin mong lagi

Ika'y tutulungang laging mapangiti.

I-yong isaisip lahat makakaya

Sapagkat karamay ako sa tuwina

Sa'king mga kamay laging kumapit ka

Upang maramdamang di ka nag-iisa.

E-spesyal ka sakin sa lahat ng oras,

Kung ako'y kaylangan lagi kang tumawag

Nawa wag limutin kaibigang liyag

Ako ay narito magpahanggang wakas.

Quitters never win Yan ang lagi nating isipin

Kapag nag-iisa napapagnilayan

Buhay sa Korea na pinagdaanan

Nandiyan ang lungkot na naging kakambal

At naging bahagi nitong kapalaran

Tandang–tanda ko pa at lagging alaala

Nang ako’y tumapak sa lupang Korea

Lungkot na baon ko at pangungulila

Dahil sa paglayo sa aking pamilya

Noon akala ko itong napuntahan

Ay ‘di mababago yaong kahirapan

Lalo sa trabaho na pinagsimulan

Halos masasabing trabahong kalabaw

Pagbabalik Tanaw

Just Him and me

By: Bevi Tamargo

Today is another busy day. I am always online, but not that available to chat with friends as I have to do a lot of multi tasking. Writing is another way for me to release stress and tension. It helps my creativity flow better. And the thoughts and feelings rush out, like a dam, whose gates have suddenly been opened. I feel the rush of emotions and excitement. It takes on a life of its own. The river goes places and ex-plores unknown and unexpected territory. It is wonderful and fascinating.

I have gotten a cold yesterday and so I cancelled my night classes. I’m planning to call one of my old students later, just to chat and catch up on things. I mean, stu-dents are not friends, as we have a profes-sional relationship. But I guess after teach-ing them, the professionalism ends, and friendship begins. One of my students is an asset manager and I do miss hearing news about the stock market.

I like my new job at Rakso Travel Cor-poration, though sometimes it can be a bit

stressful coz I have to do a lot of multi task-ing. But I’m happy because it makes me appreciate teaching more. After a year of always doing the same thing, I felt kind of bored with teaching but now, I feel a re-newed interest in it. I mean, it is a welcome change after a day of office work. I mean, office work is course, just that, and it can be a bit routinary. But teaching has to al-ways be alive and vibrant and refreshing. It is like a breath of fresh air after a long and tiring day. A time of forgetting, I suppose. Of letting out and de-focusing. Of forgetting responsibilities. I hope my students feel the same way.

I feel grateful for the moments when I am alone. I mean, most of my work has to do with dealing with people and talking to people all the time. But I do feel grateful for those isolated moments when I can just be alone with my thoughts. Where I don’t have to be anyone or anything, but just me. Just me and myself, and God. These for me are times of peace, when I just empty myself. I walk slowly, and try to breathe in the air and feel it flowing in my veins. I look at the flowers and see the magic in them. When

I’m alone, I’m like a child again. Blank. With no expectations or worries whatsoever. There’s no past, no future. Just moments. And memories that pass by. And God. My heart is like an ocean of feelings and the waves dance gracefully. Rocking the boat of my life gently.

The voting for the Mr./Ms. Onfino has just started. I’m happy that some candi-dates had posted their pictures on the web-site. Some people alleged cheating which I think is ridiculous, and though at first I was offended, I realized, why bother? They are after all entitled to their own opinions. But I am happy to be a part of a wonderful pro-ject ,which though may not be perfect, have taken wings and a life of its own. I watch as it picks up its wings and soar up into the skies.

And at the end of my life, all of the routi-nary things, all of the complicated matters will all fade away. And there will be just bliss. And Him. Him and me. And that won-derful, blissful feeling. In one eternal mo-ment that is my life.

PAPURI PARA KAY EL SHADDAI

Amie Sison

Noong 2006 nakadalo ako sa pagdiri-

wang ng anibersaryo ng El Shaddai sa

Tongsong Auditorium ginanap ito pag-

katapos ng Banal na Misa. Hindi ako

nakisaya dahil inisip ko na bakit pinag-

sabay ang selabrasyon ng magkaibang

sekta sa lugar ng mga Katoliko. Hindi ko

gustong makiisa sa pagsayaw nila at

patalun-talon. Hindi ito normal para sa

aking pananampalataya.

At bakit ganun

nila iyon bigyan ng halaga. Dahil hindi

naman ako interesado lumipas ang mga

araw na wala akong kaalaman tungkol

dito. Mahalaga na sa akin ang nag-

sisimba sa Romano Katoliko at naglil-

ingkod.

Nagkaroon ako ng pagkakataong maki-

lala siya. Siguro dahil na rin sa ginusto

niya na makilala ko siya. Siguro ay tina-

tawag niya ako. Siguro ay kailangan ko

siya. Ngayon, isa na ako sa mga nagpu-

puri sa kaniya. Nagagalak magpatalun-

talon at sumayaw para sa kanya. Nagsa-

sakripisyo para manalangin.

Tila nagkaroon ng pagbabago. Na-

pakaraming nangyaring pagsubok ang

napagdaanan ko ngunit alam ko naman

na wala akong lakas para makayanan

ang lahat. Mga pagsubok na kay hirap

haraping mag-isa. Pero nagpatuloy

akong manalangin ng walang sawa at

umaasang hindi niya ako pababayaan. Sa

lahat ng biyayang nakamit ko sa pamam-

agitan ng pagtulong niya, ang bawat

araw upang papurihan siya ay kulang pa.

Ano nga ba ang magandang dulot ng

El Shaddai at bakit parang hinahanap

at iba pa.
