Welcome to the first issue of SCHOOLrsquoS OUT

you local community magazine set up and run

by local mums We would firstly like to thank the

wonderful local primary schools and fantastic

Dover shops and outlets for kindly assisting with

the distribution of this magazine

Inside you will find lots of ideas and fun things

to do to keep your kids entertained and

amused in the school holidays along with some

interesting articles stories and a fab competitions

You will also find great advertisements from

local companies without whom this magazine

Love comes in all shapes and sizes and two canine residents at Dogs Trust Canterbury have proven just that Boyce is a big and bouncy St Bernard who found it hard to make canine chums in kennels as dogs are too scared to come near him The staff tried endlessly to introduce him to other hounds but not one wanted to be his friend Until Batfink a confident little puppy came along Brave Batfink wasnrsquot at all scared of the beasty Boyce and happily both dogs now lark around in the fields together Boyce has finally made a firm friend and Batfink certainly wins the prize for

bravery

C ats Protection is the UK rsquos leading cat welfare charity Founded in 1927 the charity finds homes for unwanted cats provides cat care information to the public and promotes

neutering as the practical way to control the growing numbers of cats in the UK

Cats Protection is made up of 257 volunteer-run branches and 30 adoption centres ndash branches are run by volunteers who look after cats at their own homes while Adoption Centres consist of cats living in indoor or outdoor pens that the public can come and meet

Cats Protection helps over 230000 unwanted cats and kittens each year ndash among them were four stray kittens whose fur turned pink whilst they were living rough at a concrete family in Cornwall It is thought the kittens came into contact with some red pigment used in concrete manufacturing which caused their rather unusual appearance

The Cats Protection centre that took them in called them Pink Panther Dusty Cerise and Clouseau and after some tender loving care as well as a bit of cleaning the kittens have now returned to their normal appearance They have since gone to new homes

C ats Protection also promotes the neutering cats to prevent unwanted kittens ndash just one unneutered female cat can produce up to 18 kittens in one year and if they produce kittens it could lead to 20000 descendants in five years ndash so neutering really helps to reduce unwanted cats It also benefits the health of cats ndash making them less likely to roam and become involved in road traffic accidents as well as fight with other cats

The charity also provides cat care information through our website telephone helpline leaflets and a variety of other methods

Cats Protection depends on the goodwill and generosity of the general public and there are a number of things you can do to help them

Organise an event to raise money for the charity such as a sponsored swim sponsored walk or a sponsored silence

Adopt a cat from us Simply call our national Helpline on 03000 12 12 12 or visit catsorguk to find your local Cats Protection branch or Adoption Centre

Donate old toys clothes and other bric-a-brac to a Cats Protection charity shop

Remember remember the 5th Of November you may well

remember the rhyme but do you remember the Fireworks Code

Follow these simple guidelines to ensure a bonfire night success

The Fireworks Code

1 Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable

2 Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time

3 Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch

if necessary

4 Light the firework at arms length with a taper and stand well

back

5 Keep naked flames including cigarettes away from fireworks

6 Never return to a firework once it has been lit

7 Dont put fireworks in pockets and never throw them

8 Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators

9 Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire

10 Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe

before leaving

Sponsored walk in aid of

Chancepixies Animal Rescue

Sunday 30th October 2011

Start Time 6pm Distance 2-3 miles (appx 1hour)

A spooky sponsored walk at dusk to start and end at ldquoThe Viewrdquo Folkestone where a party will be held in

ldquoThe Bar Belowrdquo for all those wishing to party with the ghosts amp ghouls

A complimentary glass of house wine beer or soft drink will be available to all walk participants Entry

fee is pound5 with as much sponsorship as you raise for this spooky walk in the dark in aid of Chancepixies Animal

Rescue

Dogs welcome amp Halloween attire is optional

SPOOKY MERINGUE BONES

Ingredients 5 egg whites at room temperature 12 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 12 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 drops yellow food dye

Directions

Preheat oven to 220 degrees Line two cookie sheets with greasproof

paper Beat egg whites and cream of tartar with a standing mixer or a

hand mixer until soft peaks form approximately 5 minutes Gradually

add sugar Add vanilla extract and yellow food dye Continue beating

until stiff peaks form Spoon mixture into plastic bag and cut off a 14 -

12 inch tip in the corner of the bag Pipe a 3-4 strip onto a cookie

sheet Pipe two balls on either end of the strip Smooth any peaks with a

damp finger Repeat until the cookie sheets are filled Bake for one hour

Then turn off heat and allow the cookies to sit for at least an hour Do

not open oven at any time during the baking process

Carefully remove cookies from greaseproof paper and store in an airtight

container

Fun games are a must at any kids Halloween Party If yoursquore stuck for games to play try this

Super Squelchy Mystery Prize game You will need An assortment of small toys cling film

Jelly A large Bowl or bucket and a blind fold Then Wrap the small toys in the cling film to stop

them from getting damaged whilst in the jelly Make the jelly as per the instructions on the

packet and pour a

little into the bucket

or bowl Drop some

toys in and allow to

set Repeat this

process a few times

until all toys are

hidden in the jelly

Ensure the jelly has

set and cooled

thoroughly before you

proceed with the

game Blindfold each

player so they cannot

see what they are

putting their hands

into and let them dig

for a prize

Create the right ambiance by replacing your

usual light bulb temporarily with a red or

orange bulb And a quick search in a local

pounds hop may provide you wish a packet of

battery operated flicker candles to give the right

lighting without the danger of a naked flame

Adding a drop or two of food

colouring to sparking lemonade

or water makes a fun

inexpensive drink Add the

colouring to the bottom of the

glass and pour the clear liquid

on in front of them to watch it

magically change colour In front

of their eyes Try several

different colours too

C hristmas shopping can seem like such a chore and even though

more and more of us are starting early therersquos still that last minute

panic in the days leading up to the big one

But just how many of us really do what we

can to support our local high street shops those

struggling year round to make a profit and how many

of us automatically head out to a local shopping

centre or even do it all online This year we are

launching our SOS Campaign (Support Our Shops)

and urge each and every one of you to spend your

money locally and keep our community alive

Dover has a fantastic array of shops starting right

down past the market square up past the town hall

and continuing far on up London road We have gift

shops shoe shops craft shops toy shops card shops and when your feet

ache and you need some lunch and a sit down we have a fantastic array of

coffee shops and cafes restaurants and sandwich bars all happy to receive

your custom

How many of you reading this have complained that there is ANOTHER

empty shop In Doverrsquos High Street Well spare a thought for our poor

shopkeepers who struggle month after month to pay the huge rent rates and

other costs only to see you the shopper take your valuable money out to

another town to spend Itrsquos as frustrating for them as it is for you

So before you rush out the door to meet your friends out of town why not

send them a text and get them to meet you here instead and have a

wonderful day out and explore Dover you might even be surprised by what

you find

CALLING KIDS WHO LOVE DOGS Dogs Trust launches new Junior Canine Carer competition Are you absolutely dotty about dogs Do you know your Border Terriers from your Border Collies Or your Poodles from your Pinschers Then listen up If youre aged between 7-11 you could win a fantastic opportunity to go behind the scenes at Dogs Trust - UKs largest dog welfare charity - and be a star helper at one of its rehoming centres for a day Dogs Trust has teamed up with Nintendo to launch a new Junior Canine Carer competition Five lucky people will get a rare chance to be a part of the team of canine carers at Dogs Trust rehoming centres After meeting some of the resident VIPs (very important pooches) yoursquoll get to help primp and preen the dogs and take them for a stroll as they scamper alongside you Yoursquoll pop in to the vet clinic and hear all about the mutts were helping to mend get an insiderrsquos peek at a dog training session and if youre lucky even get to name and cuddle some puppies To top it off each winner will take home lots of goodies including a Nintendo 3DS console and the new nintendogs + cats game which lets you choose and care for your own virtual pet Up for the challenge To enter all you need to do is design an advertising poster to show why a dog is not a toy It can be as simple or as colourful as you like with words photos drawings or all three Pop princesses The Saturdays will pick out the five winning posters that they think are the most eye catching and thoughtful You have until the 1st December to enter so hop to it This competition is part of a wider campaign called lsquoA dog is not a toyrsquo a response to the recent trend of dogs being treated as toys or fashion accessories and carried around in handbags Dogs Trust has seen a 28 rise in the number of fashion dogs handed into its rehoming centres in the last five years the majority of which were discarded while they were under 12 months

old Natalie Dexter who works at Dogs Trust and runs workshops about dog ownership in schools says This is a one off chance to be a Dogs Trust star helper for the day We get lots of young people wanting to work at our rehoming centres but as you have to be 16 or over to volunteer we wanted to create a way for younger kids to have this opportunity Each winner will have a hand in helping some of the dogs in our care and see first hand what happens when people get bored of dogs By being a Junior Canine Carer for a day each winner will get a real sense of responsibility and leave knowing theyrsquove made a difference to the dogs in our carerdquo Dawn Paine who is the Marketing Director at Nintendo says Nintendo is proud to be supporting the Dogs Trust Junior Canine Carer competition Itrsquos so important for kids to learn whatrsquos involved in caring for a real dog When I visited Dogs Trustrsquos rehoming centre in West London recently I was very impressed to see the different play areas created to keep the dogs entertained My own Labrador Grover gets two long walks a day and has plenty of energy left over so I know just how important it is to keep a dogrsquos mind and body busy Dogs can be your best friend for 10 years or longer but you cant switch them off when you feel like it The new nintendogs + cats game whilst of course no substitute for owning a real dog allows you to look after your own virtual pet and gives you some clues as to how much time attention and care it takes to look after a real dogrdquo If you think you have what it takes to be a Dogs Trust Junior Canine Carer for

1 Preheat the oven to 200degC

2 Core peel and slice 900g (about 5) Bramley apples

3 Place them with 75g caster sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon into a large

ovenproof dish

4 Mix 225g plain flour 100g Demerara sugar and 175g jumbo oats together in a bowl

5 Rub 175g butter into the floury mixture with your fingertips until it resembles coarse

breadcrumbs

6 Scatter the crumble mixture over the apples in an even layer and bake for 30-35

minutes until golden and the apples are tender

7 Serve with ice cream cream or custard for a fantastically filling and delicious pudding

An apple crumble is the ultimate cold weather

dessert ndash and Bramleys are the best apple for the

job retaining their tangy flavour after cooking In

2010 we Brits ate 97 million fresh Bramley apples
