Welcome back to your alma mater, Wartburg Knights, and special greetings to parents, families, and friends who join you here this weekend!

We’ve missed you! As this year’s theme suggests, we are happy everyone can be reuknighted for this year’s Homecoming festivities. The COVID-19 global pandemic has altered our lives in historic ways, but Wartburg has responded with resilience and care to continue serving students and fulfilling our mission.

The schedule is packed with special events. For those who haven’t been back on campus for a while, you will notice new spaces dedicated to academics and athletics. The Wuertz Health & Human Performance Center, Meyer Strength & Conditioning Annex, and improvements to outdoor athletics venues amplify opportunities for our students and enhance the experience of spectators.

Moreover, we’re commemorating two milestones: the Social Work program’s 75th anniversary and the 150th year of Greenwood, the president’s residence since 1987.

As Christy and I begin our 13th and final year of service, we celebrate what a special place Wartburg truly is. We feel blessed by remarkable students, devoted alumni, and generous friends who share talents and gifts that enrich our community of learning. During the final months of my term, Christy and I will continue to embrace and advance this Mission that we hold so dear: to challenge and nurture students for lives of leadership and service as a spirited expression of their faith and learning.

Loving Wartburg as much as we do makes our leaving difficult, but the College’s future is as bright now as we’ve ever seen it. Enormous promise lies before us — a strategic plan nearing completion, fundraising efforts to support that plan awaiting development, and an ambitious vision to realize — to become the leading institution in educating the whole person.

On behalf of the entire Wartburg family, welcome home!

Darrel D. Colson President

ALUMNI AND PARENTS – PLEASE REGISTERHomecoming & Family Weekend programs and nametags are available at the registration table in Saemann Student Center near the Information Desk. Registration is open Friday, Oct. 8, 4-9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 9, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

GREENWOOD 150TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR/OPEN HOUSEAs we mark the 150-year anniversary of Greenwood, the official residence of the college president since 1987, all are invited to an open house and self-guided tour from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the home, 902 12th St. NW, just north of campus.

DEDICATION OF THE PAULA SURVILLA LIVING CLASSROOMIn the spring of 2021, we conducted a Fund the Fortress crowdfunding campaign to create a living classroom in memory of Wartburg music professor Dr. Paula Survilla, who died suddenly in 2020 of a rare neurological disease. This classroom creates a space on campus that embraces the idea that learning can happen anywhere, even in the unlikeliest of spaces, and that our physical environment is a gift to be used, treasured, and protected.

Now, we invite you to a dedication of the space that is a fitting tribute to Paula’s life and legacy. Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. for a brief dedication of the new Paula Survilla Living Classroom, located in the courtyard on the south side of Bachman Fine Arts Center.

SOCIAL WORK PROJECT In celebration of the Department of Social Work’s 75th anniversary, the Tomson Family Foundation has made a $25,000 gift to establish a new endowment that will provide financial support to social work students who wish to have an experiential learning opportunity that brings additional expenses (e.g., an unpaid practicum in a different state).

If we meet this $25,000 challenge, the Tomson Foundation will provide an additional $25,000, creating a $75,000 endowment to ensure students can have distinctive learning opportunities.

To learn more and to support the project, please visit www.wartburg.edu/fund-sw.

Capt. Daniel Grinstead ’72 Iowa City, IowaDan earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Minnesota in Duluth in 1975. He rose from being a staff social worker at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics to serving as a social work specialist. A member of the Iowa Army National Guard urged Dan to consider serving soldiers, and Dan became the oldest Iowan deployed by the National Guard in modern times. In 2010 he served in Afghanistan in the rank of captain as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, running a combat stress clinic at Bagram Airfield. He also staffed a behavioral health clinic at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam. After his one-year deployment, Dan returned

to the U of I Hospitals to work on an adult inpatient psychiatry unit and has been an instructor at various schools and programs. He was a researcher with the Iowa City VA Health Care System, and after retiring from the U of I in 2019, Dan supervised a Veterans Affairs research study about service dogs for veterans.

Daniel H. Hanson ’77 Urbandale, IowaDan began his career at Waldorf College as an admissions officer. He earned his master’s degree in education and computer science at Mankato State University and became a college professor. He earned a doctorate in instructional technology from Iowa State University in 1998. He led Waldorf’s development of a management information systems degree program and was elected chair of the faculty, moving the college forward as a baccalaureate-granting institution. In 2002, Dan became Waldorf’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college and made proactive changes to the faculty governance and communication

process. In 2009, Dan became president of Peru State College in Nebraska, exuding leadership and service in his role. When the Missouri River hit record levels in 2019, he rallied the college and community to relocate students and conserve water. He retired from Peru State in June 2021, after enrollment grew to 2,500 and more than $75 million was invested in new and renovated facilities.

Lawrence “DC” Randle ’79 Isanti, MinnesotaAfter earning his degree in science education, DC wanted his students to have more exposure to nature than what he had growing up in Washington, D.C. At Saint Francis High School in Minnesota, he taught behaviorally challenged students, using a project to trap and release an endangered turtle. DC earned a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with an ecological emphasis in 2005 from Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota. He learned about the Jason Project and was one of six educators to take part in the Amazon Exploration Project in 1994. Since 1996, he has been an assistant canopy researcher and has brought

students to experience tropical ecology, indigenous culture, sustainable development, and rainforest research in South America. Since 2000, DC has been an expedition coordinator for trips to Peru and recently helped Wartburg start a May Term class to South America. In 2015, he became a naturalist for education outreach with the University of Minnesota’s Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve.

Albert C. “Sparky” Duroe ’67 Jesup, IowaAfter two years at Wartburg College, Sparky earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics at Iowa State. He started his career at Farmers State Bank in Waterloo, became CEO and purchased a controlling interest, growing the bank to over $850 million in assets and 10 branches. He has served as a past president of the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Jesup Economic Development Foundation. An ardent supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, he was president of the Winnebago Council board and later was president of Area 1 and Area 7. Sparky attended the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the 1970s,

then completed Harvard’s Small Company Management Program in 1980. He has supported Wartburg College for decades, serving on the board of trustees and supporting scholarships and many other projects. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Sparky was recognized as the Outstanding Reservist for Iowa during the Vietnam War period. He is also part of the American Legion Honor Guard in Jesup and actively supports his local church.

Douglas D. Mason ’75 Naperville, IllinoisWhen Wartburg College hired a young Wartburg graduate with a bachelor’s in music education in 1982 to be the director of admissions in a period of stagnant enrollment, Doug quickly turned around the trend with a 14-year high of 1,400 students. After a year as Wartburg’s vice president for student affairs, he was named vice president for advancement, leading the areas of admissions, alumni, development, college relations, and financial aid. In his 10 years at Wartburg, gift income doubled, enrollment grew by 35%, and he built an integrated marketing team. A consulting firm, Gonser Gerber Tinker Suhr LLP in Illinois, took

notice in 1992, and Doug became a sought-after consultant, presenter, facilitator, and trainer, giving guidance to numerous organizations in the cultural, educational, religious, and health-care fields. He became a partner, and he has worked with dozens of organizations in capital campaigns, endowment and planned giving programs, strategic plans, board development work, public relations, and more.

Edith J. Phillips Waldstein ’73 Waverly, IowaEdie went on to earn her master’s degree in 1975 then her doctorate in German languages and literatures in 1982, both from Washington University in St. Louis. She was a member of the German faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston from 1980 to 1989. When she came to Wartburg a second time in 1989, she began as the registrar and a part-time faculty member, and later served as associate vice president for academic affairs and associate dean of the faculty. In 2001, she assumed the new role of vice president for enrollment management, where for 20 years she led the college’s efforts to identify, recruit, and

retain students. She served on the president’s cabinet to support the college’s strategic plan and oversaw admissions, financial aid, the registrar, and information technology. Among her notable achievements were improved retention rates, record enrollments, and implementing the college’s Pathways Center. Edie has served on the Waverly City Council, the local Planning & Zoning Board, the Bartels Retirement Community Board, and the Allen College Hospital Board.

SUNG IN PERSIAN

Waiting, where is the harmony of your voice, so that, free from the desires of this life: I might rise?

I am a dove from paradise, but only out of this worldly cage: I shall rise.

If, in your devotion, you call upon me to serve you, then I promise, from the desires of life and this world: I will rise.

O Lord, from the cloud of your grace, let your rain fall over and over, before it falls, from the midst of it all, like a handful of dust: Let me rise.

O rise up, with sweet gesture, and show me your stature: lofty, like the cypress, With dancing feet: I rise. With clapping hands: I rise.

On the day I die, in the span of a single breath, grant me but a glimpse of you, and then, like Hafez, free from the desires of life and this world: Upward, I rise!

– Excerpted from a ghazal by Shams Hâfez-e Shirazi (Translated from Persian by Eric Banks and Abbie Betinis

The Heritage Society was established in 1977 to recognize and thank alumni and friends who have made provisions for future gifts to Wartburg College in their estate plans. For many Heritage Society members, a planned gift is a natural extension of their generosity to Wartburg College during their lifetimes. More than 650 households of all ages now hold memberships in the Heritage Society.

We believe those who join the Heritage Society are to be held in a special place within the Wartburg community. A special luncheon is held in their honor during Homecoming & Family Weekend, where new Heritage Society members also are recognized.

All members receive a framed watercolor print of Old Main in appreciation of their generosity.
