Paper CutsThanks“What most people need to learn in life is how to love people and use things–instead of using people and loving things.” – Anonymous

You’ve got to hand it to Anonymous. Great thinker. Very articulate. Ever wonder who it is? Who they are? Several–hmm, many–years ago, one of my published pieces took off on a circuitous journey. The piece was called, The Friendship Wish. At one point it landed in print on a paper placemat on a restaurant table somewhere in Northern Alberta. Instead of my name, the piece was credited with–(now you’re ahead of me)–Anonymous. Funny. If my friend hadn’t stopped at that particular spot for breakfast during his travels, I would never have known my work had reached such lofty status. While I am not among the world’s greatest thinkers, I am reasonably articulate. And it’s gratifying to know one’s message continues to move throughout the world where people can capture it. Now you know the identity of at least one Anonymous. It was worth a check, then, to learn who originally

expressed the quote at the beginning of this column. A quick search on the Internet revealed: Anonymous, Author Unknown, Zelda Fitzgerald or Mother Teresa, depending on which website you select. Whoever did say it was right, though; I suspect we’d be hard pressed to find anyone who disagrees with the message. It’s living it that may be more difficult than agreeing with it. Love people and use things. Don’t use people. Don’t love things. Don’t gather things when you can gather with people. Let the people you love know you love them. Tell the people you like that you like them. People aren’t things. Find ways to appreciate them. If you like something they did, or said, say so. And say thanks. Bob Hope always thanked us for the memories. He didn’t just tell us, he sang it to us. As a comedian, his giving was through humour. Shared laughter is one of the best ways to get to know–and appreciate–people. Happy Thanksgiving.

Take a Position:North West Sewer Trunk

I am having a problem understanding why your paper hasn’t taken a position on the issue of the potential environmental risk of drilling under the Scugog River for the North West Sewer Trunk in Lindsay. It is a given that there are PCB’s in the silt at the bottom of the river but has anyone even thought of the possibility of there being heavy metals as well? For years Sinster Creek drained the Lindsay Industrial Park off Colborne Street and flowed directly into the Scugog River. Lindsay residents will tell you that every day it had a different colour, not to mention the disgusting odour. This, along with leachate from the old Lindsay Dump makes up the silt on the bottom of the river. Bobcaygeon is on Sturgeon Lake and the Scugog River flows into Sturgeon Lake. Any disruption of the silt in the Scugog will release these toxins into the waters of Sturgeon Lake and no amount of containment or mitigation will stop it. Is it not worth taking a position for your neighbours?David HodgsonBurnt River, ON

Solar Panel InitiativesOnce again, both roof top and ground solar panel requests have found their way to Council for support. Seems to be the thing to do these days. While it is in vogue to be green, and the majority of Council almost automatically approve and support these requests, Ward 16 Councillor Heather Stauble consistently cautions that more time should be spent in reviewing and analysing these projects prior to voting. Sadly, no one seems to be listening. Too bad because Heather has considerable experience regarding solar development and advocating for roof top and ground solar panels while at the same time is vehemently against wind-farm initiatives.

Municipally Owned Land Over the past number of years, some municipally owned property used for agricultural purposes has been leased to members of the agricultural community on a request-by-request basis. Apparently there are other municipally owned properties that would be suitable for agriculturaluses and would generate additional revenues for the City. The Mayor put forward a motion/recommendation that Staff prepare a list for Council and the Public on other land owned by the City and suitable for agriculture that could be leased to the highest bidder for 2013. The motion passed unanimously.

Workplace TrainingWorkplace Violence and Harassment in the Workplace are two courses that are planned to be implemented for supervisors and employees for the City of Kawartha Lakes. This is a re-submission to Council looking for approval to start the training within 60 days. Ward 3 Councillor David Hodgson was concerned that there was still no indication of any attempt to identify a process for the naming of a third party or independent adjudicator as requested

by Council back in 2010. Corporate Services Manager, Liana Patterson appeared to have no ready answer and the request to Council was deferred until this oversight has been rectified.

Change in Federal/Provincial Election Boundary

The federal government is currently reviewing the riding boundaries for election purposes. Currently the entire City of Kawartha Lakes is included in the riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. The recent proposal would see the municipality of the City of Kawartha Lakes divided and apportioned to two different ridings, one being Kawartha Lakes-Port Hope-Cobourg and the second being Haliburton-Uxbridge. As stated previously, the City of Kawartha Lakes would be divided with Lindsay being represented by Kawartha Lakes-Port Hope-Cobourg but Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls with Haliburton-Uxbridge. Public input is being sought either via written submissions by October 1st. or at a public meeting to be held at the Best Western Hotel in Cobourg on Nov. 12th at 1:00. Doug Elmslie, Ward 6, presented a motion that a delegation be sent representing the views of the City of Kawartha Lakes. In his submission he was concerned that issues common to the City of Kawartha Lakes will differ greatly to that of larger centres such as Cobourg and Port Hope and similarly the differences between northern CKL and larger centres such as Haliburton-Uxbridge. There was little support from many of the Councillors and in a recorded vote it passed by the barest of margins 9 in favour with 8 opposed to the delegation. As Mayor Ric McGee said, “With this slim a margin a delegation may not have the required impact”. In my opinion, I am somewhat perplexed that the Electoral Commission while on the one hand they name the one riding Kawartha Lakes- Port Hope-Cobourg and put Lindsay there and then they put Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls with the other riding Haliburton-Uxbridge. At the time of the amalgamation into the City of the Kawartha Lakes there was considerable opposition to this initiative. Now, the Electoral Commission wants to separate Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls. With a little background study they may have considered another alternative. Don’t know about you but I am writing. If you care

to write the Commission, you can use this address: Ms. Beverly Hayter, Commission Secretary Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario, 130 King Street West, Suite 3670, P.O. Box 368, Toronto, ON. M5X 2A2 If however you would like to attend a meeting and make a presentation, you can advise Ms. Hayter at the above address.

Engineering Department As part of the corporate organizational re-structure in May 2011, the Engineering Division was moved from the Department of Public Works to the Department of Development Services. In a memorandum to Council, Councillor Hodgson requested that CAO Mark Fisher re-evaluate the Engineering Department under its present structure to determine if it is sufficiently addressing the needs of the of the Community and the Corporation. Wonder what this will bring.

ROAD 24 BOBCAYGEONBy Gord Killen

Most of us, at one time or another, has travelled Road 24. We use it as a short-cut going or coming to and from Lindsay. For the residents the speed motorists use is a cause for concern. Although the speed limit is 60kph most vehicles regularly exceed this limit, some far above it. Some of the residents have docks on the other side of the road and crossing the road can be a dangerous venture. On September 27th a delegation of nine people met with Mayor McGee assisted By Ron Taylor, Director, Development Services and OPP Inspector Rob Shaw. The main objective of the Committee (Ted Connor, Ron Roberge, and George Oberlander) is to request that the City put in a four-way stop at CKL24 and Kenstone Beach Road. This is not the first time that they have made this request. The City has responded previously by assessing the volume of traffic on CKL24 and found that there was not sufficient numbers of vehicles to support the installation of four-way stop signs. The study was done in October 2011 and the committee felt that the assessment should have been done during the tourist season. The meeting began with Committee spokesperson Ted Connor re-capping resident concerns: Speeding vehicles; passing allowed in inappropriate sections; no weight/local restriction signs for trucks; many mail boxes are on the opposite side of the road and necessitates homeowners having to cross over to get mail; CKL 24 is 5 feet narrower than Hwy 36 and as a result heavy trucks using CKL24 wander onto the shoulder putting those people out for a walk in danger. In response the Mayor stated that CKL24 is a County Highway and as such the City cannot implement a Four-way Stop. Inspector Shaw stated that putting in a four-way stop would cause more problems not less. There have been no serious

accidents on CKL24 while on another similar highway there have been 29. The 60kph in the built-up area is lower than other similar highways. After further discussion the City has agreed to:• Increase patrols particularly radar on CKL24

(Shaw)• Review the location of Truck and Load Restriction

signs (Taylor)• Review the road markings and adjust as necessary.

(Taylor)• When these initiatives are taking place, agreed to

allow a member of the committee to accompany the City Employee to point out areas of concern. (Taylor)

The Mayor thanked the Committee for bringing their issues to the City.

The 17th edition of Cruisefest, one of Bobcaygeon’s most exciting annual events and a premier attraction put on by the Chamber of Commerce, went off with nary a hitch on Sunday, September 16th’. The near-perfect weather, attracting 210 vehicles from the 1930s on, were driven or occupied by over 500 owners and their families. Like all the other events that make life here interesting and bring dollars to our stores, eateries and other businesses, Cruisefest didn’t simply happen, any more than those events put on by other local organizations. It took planning, communication and, most important, physical effort by dedicated volunteers. That’s why Chamber director-committee-chair-retired person Joe Pollard always gives full credit to those “who make it all happen”. The list includes sponsors led this year by Gus Brown, the new owner of Gus Brown’s Edgetown Ford Lincoln, who arrived with samples of his 2012 and 2013 models, the vendors, the “Joe Public” volunteers and the vehicle owners, whose passion and expertise brought elderly vehicles back to life.Together, Joe says, they brought back memories for the adults and provided a history lesson for the young people about an era when we could actually tell cars apart. That was particularly true of this year’s “star” vehicle, a right-hand-drive 1934 Rolls-Royce in its original livery. Joe also credits his committee for the event’s success – Norm Matthews, Trail’s End Lodge, who annually shows his still-workaday pick-up, and fellow retirees Gord Zimmerman and Richard Coulter. Thanks to the booklet design-and-print efforts of Graphics Plus Design’s & Printing, Lori Anne Moffatt and Chamber office manager Ruthann Wilson, whose behind-the-scenes efforts go a very long way to ensuring that things go right.

THERE’S NO TIMEBy David Sparkes

I have something in common with Einstein, Newton and even Stephen Hawking. We have all spent a good deal of time thinking about – time! That’s

about as far as our similarity goes I fear but I can tell you that, like about ten million others, I once had the idea of reading Hawkins’s bestselling book “A Brief History of Time”. I think I got into about three chapters before abandoning it and I wonder how many of those ten million others did the same thing. When it comes to advanced mathematics, theories and quantum physics, my span of attention wanders faster than I can make it to the fridge! I can also say I have something in common with the great writers Goethe, H.G. Wells, Mark Twain and Charles Dickens (to name but a few). We have all spent a good deal of time thinking about – time travel! And that’s about the extent of our similarity. Stephen Hawking also has quite a bit to say about time travel: He said that the laws of physics prevent travel back or forth in time but he nevertheless does not discount the possibility of time travel. Actually he said a lot more but I have condensed it for you. The subject is enthralling to me and I love thinking about it, reading about it and watching movies. Recently I read a Stephen King novel entitled “11/22/63” which explores the concept of travel back in time and how far-reaching consequences are involved with every decision we make. I highly recommend this book if you are a time travel junkie like me. When scientists say that time is relative, they are referring to things like the speed of light, complex equations and theories by people like Newton and Einstein. On the other hand, when a simple man like me uses the term, I refer to the fact that 30 minutes goes by awfully quickly when you are running late and hurrying to make an appointment, but it seems like an eternity when you are in the dentist’s chair! Time also seems to go faster as you get older and I have no idea how the scientists explain that phenomenon but can personally attest to it. “There’s no time like the present”. That’s an expression my mother used all the time and for her it simply meant that if you have something to do it’s better to do it sooner rather than later. But those

words carry a deeper meaning because in reality there is only the present moment. Whatever you may think about time travel or how time seems to be going faster, you can only live in the present. The future is entirely in your imagination and the past is a distorted memory from one person’s perspective. So the best thing we can do is live each moment to the full and stop living in anticipation of better times. As they always say when I buy my double-double, “Have a good day” (or variations on that theme).

KAWARTHA SETTLERS’ VILLAGENotes from the Manager

Volunteers do make the difference! Here is a big thank you to all our fabulous volunteers. We have had a busy season, several events. Your hours of work on every task done is appreciated and valued. We had a team of grass cutters, grounds people, office helpers, event volunteers, camp program volunteers, painters, carpenters, demonstrators, decorators and telephone callers. Thank you, everyone. Your time and efforts keep Settlers’ Village running smoothly and make it the wonderful attraction it is for all of our guests. I want to honour a volunteer in every issue. This first is dedicated to Noah McNeil. Noah came to us in June and volunteered three days a week for the entire summer. He cut grass, built pens, fed and cleaned animals, painted, cleaned and moved things, anything that was asked of him and more. Hats off to Noah; you are an amazing example of our great young people. Thank you. In September we hosted our first wedding in the Murphy Barn. It was a beautiful wedding and the bride and groom were excited to have such a unique venue for their special day. The weather and winds were challenging, but the bride assured me as they said their vows the sun broke through and

all was good. The very next day we were able to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Byron & Marie Edney, in the barn. It is fun to see the decorations and transformation of the barn to the reception hall! The pictures are proof of just how practical the barn is for large crowds. Congratulations to our first bride and groom and to our not so newly- weds who were both celebrating in the Murphy Barn! Several of the Anniversary guests gave donations to Settlers’ on behave of Marie and Byron and we thank you for these thoughtful gifts. We are getting ready for the Haunted Village, October 20. Grab your costume and come on up. The Haunted Hospital will surely scare you to Creepsville! We will host a photography class on Mondays, 7 to 9 pm. Keith Griffin will instruct on the functions and usage of digital cameras, from beginner to beyond. Call to register 705.738.6163. Lucy Gray had a full house during the Harvest Festival for her pie-making demonstration. She has agreed to instruct cooking classes this fall. Preparing meals from scratch that are nutritious and economical are of interest to all of us. Call us for details on dates and times. If you have visited the Village during the last month or so, you have probably seen the decorating team flying around in high gear. Christmas and Festival of Trees are just around the corner and the evidence is starting to show up all around the Village. Looking very good, ladies! The Sponsorship donations and requests are pouring in; call if you need any information about this. Your support is very much appreciated.Gail Thomassen, Manager

SMALLBUSINESS WEEK

The Week In Place

Small Business Week 2012 is October 15 to 19 here in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Many activities are already set.

This year there are four signature events. The week will include the Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce Small Business Breakfast, the Employment Law seminar and the 14th Annual Innovation Awards. Also being planned for Thursday October 18 is a

new, daylong event, Bridges to Better Business, presented by the Kawartha Lakes Small Business Enterprise Centre (KLSBEC) with support from both the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Kawartha Lakes CFDC (KLCFDC). Also new this year is Small Business Community Day on the Wednesday, October 17, which features local activities in the middle of the weeklong schedule. “It’s a new element for us and we are very pleased to have 3 events already confirmed. It’s important that everyone realizes the significant contribution small businesses make to the entire City of Kawartha Lakes,” says organizer Andrew Wallen, General Manager, KLCFDC. The Week will begin with the Employment Law seminar on Monday evening, followed the next morning by the Small Business Week breakfast. After the new events on Wednesday and Thursday, things will wrap up at noon on Friday, October 19 with the annual Kawartha Lakes Innovation Awards at City Hall. Potential Innovation Award winners need to be thinking about taking action now, as the deadline for nominations is October 11. You can also download the Innovation Awards application, and learn more about all the Small Business Week 2012 activities by going to www.smallbizweek.net or the Community Futures web site, www.KLCFDC.com.

CRAYOLA CANADA & UNITED WAY

Team Up forthe 24th AnnualSale in Lindsay

On Saturday October 13th, from 8 a.m. until noon, the Lindsay Central Exhibition (LEX) will be packed with

shoppers looking for extraordinary bargains from Crayola Canada’s largest sale. Crayola Canada is one year away from its 25th annual Crayola sale for United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. With this celebration in mind, Crayola will be providing the first 25 people at the Saturday sale with special passes for their silver anniversary of giving. Crayola and United Way are already beginning to plan this special sale to celebrate its partnership with United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. This is the largest Crayola charity sale in North America. Crayola Canada in Lindsay has a long, proud and generous history of giving to United Way to support more than 40 vital programs in the community. Through the sale and active workplace campaigns, Crayola Canada has donated nearly $750,000, bringing hope and help to people through the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Paul Zadorsky, General Manager describes

the commitment of the company. “At Crayola we believe every person in our community deserves an opportunity for a good life. We are very fortunate that this event can help children, youth and adults in providing support to meet their daily needs. We have tremendous volunteers - including Crayola employees, their families and those from outside the company - to help make this event a success every year. We look forward to seeing everyone from the community during the United Way sale.” First-time shoppers are reminded this is a cash only sale. Historically, the sale has drawn people from across Ontario. For some, this has become a tradition over the last two decades with some shoppers camping out the night before to be first in line. People are reminded to bring their wagons and bags for packing up their purchases. Tim and Randy Burke of Evergreen Power Ltd. and Evergreen Home and Cottage, co-chairs for the United Way’s 2012 campaign, recognize that long-established businesses play a role in supporting philanthropic practices. “There are win-win opportunities when business leaders step forward to support a recognized branded charity, which benefits both parties with dual branding opportunities while helping people in their community. The entire sale is powered by volunteers and the LEX graciously provides the venue, large enough to accommodate Crayola’s product and over 2,500 excited shoppers.”For further information please call the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes 705.878.5081 or go to our website www.ckl-unitedway.ca.

They served a delicious Roast Chicken meal on colourfully decorated tables on the deck

and my friend DAVE DEVALL gets all the credit for the latter!

My Grandson, TRENTON BALDWIN, escorted the guests from their cars to the house, on his Unicycle.

And my Granddaughter, CHESNEY BALDWIN, arranged all the gifts the guests brought for the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society. The “pocket

New Members are always made to feel welcome and it’s a great way to make new friends. Nov-ice curlers are introduced to the game of curling in a safe and positive environment and receive free lessons at the beginning of the season as a part of their membership.

Plan to come to our Open House October 14th and check out our facilities. Novice curlers can try the sport for the first time using our equipment. All you need is comfortable clothing, gloves and clean running shoes.

Our fees are very competitive and the curling season runs from mid-October to the end of March. We hold several bonspiels during that time, two of which are to raise money for local charities. We also have a casual licensed lounge for a relaxing get together after curling, and the many social events we hold throughout the year.

So if you want to be COOL check out our website at www.bobcaygeoncurlingclub.com or contact Geoff Cross @ 705-738-6548

The Kawartha Potters Guild

The Kawartha Potters Guild, based in Peterborough, has members from Haliburton, Bobcaygeon, and Lindsay, all the way down to Port Hope. We draw members and customers from a wide area. The Guild recently established a permanent home in central Peterborough, which will allow them to offer a variety of classes, as well as feature a full retail gallery. Rental space is also available for those potters who do not have their own studios. The Guild will be kick-starting their new home by offering a “Family Clay Day” on October 20th. Participants will be making a pottery pumpkin tea light, just in time for Halloween. THANKSGIVING MESSAGEFrom Our Mayor

As we watch the days grow shorter and the leaves turn to fall colours, we reflect upon the many things we have to be thankful for individually and collectively in Kawartha Lakes. Personally, I am thankful for the quality of life that my family and I enjoy, the friends that we socialize with and the opportunities that are available to us in this country. In Kawartha Lakes, we enjoy a standard of living and a quality of life that is the envy of almost every nation. As your Mayor, I am thankful for the veterans and the servicemen and women who sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice so that we may enjoy the liberties we do. In addition, I am thankful for our first responders that keep our communities safe and are there for us in our moment of need. I am thankful for the great weather this summer to support our tourism industry and our agricultural industry and while we could have used a little more rain in a more timely fashion, there are many

areas throughout Ontario that will not see crop yields even close to what our producers have in Kawartha Lakes. Finally, I am most thankful for all of the people (especially the volunteers) that put their nose to the grindstone to make this community the best it can be. While we don’t win every race, the fact that we are in the race is an accomplishment. Sometimes we forget how fortunate we are and let our sense of entitlement get the better of us. Be thankful this Thanksgiving as we celebrate the harvest and be kind to each other. Happy Thanksgiving!Ric McGee,Mayor

EXCELLENT TIPSYou Should Know

Planning on celebrating Thanksgiving at the cottage this year before closing it up for the season? Don’t let holiday preparation turn your next bill into a turkey. Here are some helpful tips on how your audience can save energy while whipping up a memorable meal.Thanksgiving energy savings tips:• Pass on preheating this year! While preheating the

oven is required for baking, it’s not necessary for other uses like roasts or casseroles.

• For cooking small quantities or side dishes, consider using the microwave, toaster oven or slow cooker.

HAUNT YOUR HOMEAre YOU Ready?

We’re really pumped this year – we’ve been planning new and exciting things to make this year even better than the past three. For example, we’re rolling out a brand new web- sitehauntyourhome.ca to make it even easier and more fun for you to enter and showcase your imagination and talent to the entire world. Did you know we’ve had approximately 1 MILLION hits to the website in the past three years from people in 100 difference countries? That’s your audience – impress them even more this year. It’s easier to sign up and the new site offers more ways to display and promote your entry. If you are not entering, you can pick your favourites and leave comments, too. We’re also introducing new things this year for the contest itself, including more mini-contests, prizes and more opportunity for the community to enjoy all of your creativity. Haunt Your Home has made Hallowe’en into its own season, not only one night of trick-or-treating. You’ve made that happen – thanks! Like always, Haunt Your Home will donate money to the community, too. Last year, we raised $20,000 for the Boys and Girls Club and the RMR I Imagine campaign. Help us do even better this year by entering. There are great sponsors this year, too, all of which have generously donated their money and time to help us make Haunt Your Home an amazing event in our city. We’re city wide again this year, so you’ll have more friendly competition – it’s time for you to take it up a notch, don’t you think? You can find more information about Haunt Your Home 2012 on Facebook, through Twitter and, of course, at our big, new website. “Like” us on Facebook to get updates and information about all of the exciting things we’re doing. Also featured will be items for seasonal decorating at Hallowe’en or Christmas. The Craft Show is an annual fund raising event for the non-profit, non-funded Buckhorn Community Centre and is run by many volunteers who build the exhibitor booths, man admission booths, park cars, direct traffic and serve in the Snack Bar. Show hours are Saturday, October 6, 10 am – 5 pm; Sunday, October 7, 10 am – 5 pm; and Monday, October 18, 10 am – 4 pm. General Admission is $5.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free. COMMUNITY CARESby Mike Puffer Each autumn, agencies providing services to help people live independently and with dignity in their homes declare October to be “Community Support Month.” This lets local agencies toot their horns to draw attention to services they provide. However, such services aren’t meant to be used just one month of the year. Throughout the year, personal support workers, nurses and community support agency staff and volunteers provide help to seniors and people with special needs so that they can stay where they want to be – at home. Whether it is helping with a bath, changing a bed, delivering meals, offering a social break from solitude, or transportation to an appointment, community support services play an integral role in the overall health care equation. Yet, only a tiny percentage of the provincial health care budget currently supports such programs. In Ontario, though, there have been indications that more attention will be paid in the future to the important role of community support services. Regardless of the organization or program, a central theme that people will hear from any community support service agency is Teamwork. Locally, very few, if any organizations work on their

own – they rely upon others, they refer clients to each other, and they help in a mutually beneficial way whenever needed. As a result of such co-operation and support, residents should feel that if they contact one local agency for help, they actually have a team of organizations behind them. That’s true throughout the year, not just during Community Support Month. Mike Puffer is Director of Marketing & Development for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Health and Support Services. FUNCTIONAL FITNESS Kitchen Style

by Susan Simmons

Attention, ladies and gentlemen! As you lead—or assist with—the preparation of your Thanksgiving feast, include some muscle toning, body strengthening, functional fitness moves in a fun and innovative way without leaving the kitchen. Since this is a special holiday, we’ll go easy and feature just a few simple and slightly modified exercises to get you started. Try six to eight repetitions of each and see how it feels. Rule of thumb: If anything hurts, stop doing it. A good idea for all exercises is to count to four on the way down and back. Slow, controlled. Exhale on exertion; inhale on release. Note: If you aren’t certain your form and technique are safe and correct, consult an experienced, qualified fitness professional first. Counter Pushups: Place feet hip-width apart, feet flat on floor (keep those heels down and don’t lock your knees.) Hands on counter, shoulder-width apart. Activate abdominal muscles (pull your belly button in towards your spine) to protect your back, and hold them that way until Christmas. Now, gently lean upper body in towards counter, pause, then gently push back to start position. Feel the strength through your arms and chest. Keep your elbows in, close to your body.

Squats: Depending on your fitness level, stand in front of a kitchen chair (basic level)—or free-style it—with feet hip-width apart. Place hands lightly on thighs. Activate your abdominal muscles. Chest up, stick your buttocks back and slowly bend your knees to lower yourself as if to sit on the chair. As you squat, keep your knees over your ankles, behind your toes. Think about how strong you feel as you keep your weight on your heels, and push through your heels as you return to standing position. Turkey Lifting: Implement safe lifting techniques to protect your back. Activate abdominal muscles as you place turkey into--or remove it from–the oven. Turn, never twist, your body and step with your lead foot towards the object you’re picking up and complete a proper pivot. Also, keep knees “soft” and be sure to bend them as your reach down towards the oven. Resistance Exercise: Resist the temptation to take a nap after your meal. Go for a brisk walk.

WORDFROM OUR FIRE CHIEF

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed

more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. Each year North American Fire Departments promote a specific fire safety message to remember the Great Chicago Fire. Fire Prevention Week runs October 7 – 13, 2012. This year’s theme is “Have 2 Ways Out!” “Be Rabbit Ready”. When the smoke alarms sound, everyone must know where to go – that’s why it is so important for everyone to have working smoke alarms and to develop and practise a home fire escape plan. The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Department would like families to focus on protecting your family from fire by planning ahead and integrating a few simple fire safety behaviours into your everyday lives. By paying attention and eliminating potential fire hazards in your home you can make a difference that will prevent or reduce fire related injuries, deaths, and property damage. As well as being prepared to escape a fire, it is equally important to be vigilant about preventing one from happening in the first place. Many times there is something that you can do so that a fire doesn’t start fire, like paying attention to what you are cooking, for example. Cooking is the number

one cause of home fires and unattended cooking is the leading cause. The next time you have dinner on the stove and think about leaving the room, think again. It’s time for the residents of Kawartha Lakes to get ready for the very real possibility that a fire can occur in their home and being prepared to escape from one is extremely important. Here’s what you need to do right now:• Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home

and have one inside each sleep room and outside of each sleeping area.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month.• Develop a fire escape plan that identifies two

ways out of each room and a family meeting place outside.

• Make sure your plan allows for any specific needs in your household. If everyone knows what to do, everyone can get out quickly.

• Practice using the plan, at least twice a year. If everyone knows that everyone else is ready to exit quickly, no one will lose precious time trying to help someone who doesn’t need help.

• Some children and adults may not awaken to the sound of the smoke alarm. They may need help to wake up• It is also the time of year when heating systems are activated, before woodstoves, and furnaces are used they should be cleaned and serviced by reputable agencies to ensure proper operation. This year we would like to keep all fires friendly and all residents of Kawartha Lakes free of pain, injury or death from fire through Fire Safety and Prevention. Yours in Fire Safety,Mark Pankhurst

Roasted Beetand Kale Salad

So, I really love to cook a turkey, creating some show-stopping item to sit in the middle of the Thanksgiving table. However, I don’t actually really like turkey. I’m way more interested in the side dishes. This is by far one of my favourite sides to make. It’s gorgeous, delicious, and easy enough for even a quick weeknight dinner.

While peeling and dicing the raw beets before roasting takes a bit more prep time, the result is a much faster-cooking beet—and one that caramelizes all over from being exposed to the high temperature. Just be careful not to cut them too small or they will shrink to nothing. Happy Thanksgiving!

Ingredients(4-6 sides or 2 mains)1 head of kale, ribs removed*, leaves torn into pieces3 beets, peeled and ½ inch dice 1 clove garlic, minced1 teaspoon lemon zest4 tablespoons olive oil, divided1/4 cup water 2 oz soft goat’s cheese, crumbledPinch nutmegSalt/freshly ground pepper

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.2. In a bowl combine diced beets

with 2 tablespoons olive oil, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Place on a baking sheet (lined with parchment for easier cleanup) and roast for 35-40 minutes till caramelized and tender.

3. In a large sauté pan heat remaining olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic, cook 1-2 minutes. Add kale, water, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Sauté until kale is wilted and tender (but not slimy) about 8-10 minutes. Transfer to serving bowl.

4. Toss warm kale with roasted beets and the crumbled goat’s cheese. Serve warm.

*To easily remove the kale ribs, hold the leaves and pull the center rib backwards away from the leaves.

BUCKHORN OBSERVATORY

Greetings FromMy Back Yard

Buckhorn Observatory has installed a whopping big new 16-inch telescope along with a video camera, which just arrived from Ottawa today. The images will feed to a digital projector and are shown on a 45 x 65-inch screen. This makes astronomy accessible to wheelchair and low-vision guests. BHO has had a few low-vision guests as well as a group of autistic children and I occasionally make presentations to challenged adults and students. With time and patience I have been able to open up the world of astronomy to them. Their enthusiastic response was extremely rewarding. That’s the big news. You’ll also get an update on the spring constellations, a new theory on Saturn’s rings and a story featuring some outstanding Ontario astro images. To access it all visitwww.buckhornobservatory.com, enter and click on “Newsletter”. Enjoy the read.John R. Crossen,Resident AstronomerBuckhorn Observatory

LOCALRETAILERS HELP

Meet The Urgent Need In Bobcaygeon

Hungry? So is 13 percent of Bobcaygeon’s population. Friday, October 5 is the Thanksgiving Food Drive to assist the clients of Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank. Please, contribute

between 10 am and 4 pm at Foodland or Valu-Mart. Plus, for the entire month of October, Bobcaygeon’s Pet Valu presents the Thanks For Giving Event. According to Pet Valu owner, Marlene Jackson, your donations of pet food, pet supplies or money will all be donated to Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank. She explains, “It is time,” she adds. “The food drives are so necessary. And for some of the people, all they have in their lives are their companion animals

and they sometimes worry more about how to provide for their pet than they do themselves.” Every customer who purchases pet food or supplies, or donates money to the official container in the store, will receive a $5 gift coupon towards their next purchase. Marlene says her team—Jane, Taylor and Erica—will treat you to their great customer service. All money will be donated to Bobcaygeon Helps to purchase pet food and supplies. Happy Thanks For Giving.

Lorraine Thayer is one joyful artist who brings fun and spirit to the creative process in a way unlike any other. First, there are the art lessons—private, semi-private or group—for students 5 to 18 years of age. An instructor for more than 15 years, Lorraine teaches adults, too, and does so in whatever location best suits the student. “My lessons are not about just doing pictures,” she says. “They are investigating the medium, playing with colour and material. Students learn the principles and elements of design, along with the building blocks they need. We focus on the student’s personal expression.” And no, the student needn’t be artistic, he or she simply needs the drive to learn…and explore. Then there are the incredible Cupcake Parties. Wow. Here’s where Lorraine’s joy soars. Designed for students from 5 to 100 years old, the artist explains, “If you have all of the ingredients, you will create a cupcake.” The cupcake is, in fact, a treasure box made of white plaster. Hand made molds, each is hand poured and prepared by Lorraine. The party guests paint and decorate their whimsical creations with acrylic paint, flowers, gems, and feathers—all special ingredients required to make their unique cupcakes as “Princess Lorraine, The Cupcake Princess of the Royal Cupcake Company” leads them through the creative process. These fanciful parties are wonderful for fundraising events, wedding and baby showers, birthday

parties, Hallowe’en, Christmas and no-reason-at-all parties and gatherings. They’re brilliant for children, youth, adults—anyone and everyone of any and every age. Lorraine will host Cupcake Parties at the Castle, Bearly Thayer Studio, or travel within an hour’s distance of Bobcaygeon. Now you may delight your friends, family, coworkers, teachers—whomever—with Gift Certificates (Shown Below). Available in single or packages, the certificates apply to Lorraine Thayer Art Lessons or Cupcake Parties. But, since the secret is out, you’ll want to contact her soon. There is, after all, only one Lorraine Thayer, Instructor. And one extremely joyful Princess.

Aries (March 21 to April 20)Some days, Aries, you are wise beyond your years. You know this – you feel it in your bones. Don’t be afraid to share your wisdom with those who may need some sage advice.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)We are well aware of your great intellect and thirst for knowledge, Taurus. Beware the need to see things in black and white, though. Accept different opinions and open your mind to many possibilities.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)“Everybody gets so much information every day that they lose their common sense,” (Gertrude Stein.) We sense the need to remind you, Gemini, to not take all the world’s technology so seriously. Humanity will always come first!

Cancer (June 23 to Jul 23)The fall bulbs we plant in the coolness of autumn turn into gorgeous blooms with the warmth of spring. Plant your own dreams now, Cancer, and keep them safe and sound until they, too, are ready to flower. While you may have to wait awhile, all will be worth it.

Leo (June 24 to Aug. 23)Gold – representing the golden rays of the sun – is your zodiac colour, Leo. Symbolizing wealth used wisely and good health, it is also said that people who favour gold are optimistic. Wear it proudly in your every day life to increase your personal power, give you courage, confidence and willpower! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)Your tendency to look at the bright side of things is commendable, dear Virgo, but we offer this caution: don’t be taken in by lies and false promises. Keep your eyes open and ears to the ground.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)During your birth phase, Libra, enjoy your lighter side! Like other Air signs such as Aquarius and Gemini, you exude an “airy” demeanor. Bask and delight it. It never hurts to brighten someone’s day!

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)Be proud of your accomplishments, Scorpio, even though it may seem, at times, that no one else is noticing them. They show the world who you are, and that’s something awesome!

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)Keep an open mind with whom you choose to associate during this phase, Sag. What we’re saying is – don’t judge a book by its cover. There are many wonderful people out there with whom you could develop a lovely friendship if you look past the title page.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20)Stand your ground and don’t be afraid to voice your opinions, Capricorn, in the days ahead. Set boundaries on what you will accept, and DO NOT be pushed around!

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19)Music is often wonderful therapy. Music will play a role in your life soon, Aquarius. Perhaps you will decide to study an instrument? Perhaps you will just sit back and soak in some wonderful melodies!

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)You’ve got a lot on your mind these days, Pisces. Focus on what’s really important, and let the rest of your worries take a back seat, while you, and your positive thoughts, stay at the controls.

DID YOU KNOW...A Promissory Note is Well Worth the

Paper It’s Written On?

It is! If you have found yourself in a situation where you are lending money, or selling an item to someone, make sure that they sign a Promissory Note. This note should be hand written, and signed by the borrower, stating the amount borrowed, the date that it was borrowed, and the date that the loan shall be re-paid. In an ideal situation, a contract, or agreement should be in place but this does not always happen

when you are dealing with friends and family, or acquaintances. If and when the borrower does not follow through on his promise to pay you back, you will be thrilled that you took this precaution. This Promissory Note will be your sufficient legal evidence in a court of law proving that the borrower did promise ‘unconditionally’ to pay you back. The judge will most likely execute a judgment against the borrower. The next step will be collecting your money!By Donna M. Wood, Licensed ParalegalWood Paralegal Law Office

FASHION FOR THE CUREA Personal Message…and Invitation

Last year, I got the idea of hosting a Fashion Show for Breast Cancer awareness, an idea that came to me after one of my sisters was diagnosed with Breast Cancer for the second time. I also have a long time friend who is celebrating 29+ years as a Breast Cancer Survivor. I have done other things for Breast Cancer Awareness in the past, but when it hit so close to home I wanted to do more. Thus, the idea of the fashion show. Both my sister and friend couldn’t say enough about the Breast Cancer Association. This past year my sister went through some major breast reconstruction surgery and people from the Breast Cancer Association were there for her every step of the way. My friend many times has told how vital fund-raisers are to help find the cure for this horrid disease. They’ve given her the opportunity to see her son and daughter grow up and also to enjoy her grandsons. Every time that someone or some organization raises money for this awareness we are closer to finding a cure. I was thrilled with the support from business and private sources that I received; it was certainly overwhelming. I must say it is the same thing this year. It just seems I mention what I am doing, and the next thing I know someone is donating their time, items for door prizes and wonderful items for our raffle table. We raised $1,400.00 last year and were a sell out. We have added a few new things this year and once again more wonderful prizes. Tickets cost $15.00 and get you into the Show, your lunch, coffee and tea and a wonderful array of desserts. Every lady also goes home with a nifty loot bag. Fashion for the Cure takes place October 28th, 2012. Doors open at 11:30 am at the Seniors Hall, Murray Street, Fenelon Falls. Tickets are available from The Kawartha Store, Butterfly Boutique and The Village Shop in Fenelon Falls, or by calling me at 705.738.4464. I would love to see the next generation free and clear of this illness that strikes so many people. Cancer knows no boundaries; it affects us all in one way or another.Submitted by Elizabeth Sawyer
