Join us for our Oktoberfest Pot Luck Party. The Center will provide brats and

sauerkraut, hot spiced apple cider, coffee and you provide the side dishes and desserts! Entertainment, beginning at

11am, will be provided by Jerry Krueger with the meal to follow.

Cost $2.50 per person + a dish to pass

(please plan for 8-10 people and let us know what you will be bringing). Members

are invited to bring nonmember guests (age 55+) to the party. The cost for the

nonmember is $4 + a dish to share. **Registration ends Oct. 3rd**

The November Tour will bring you to Appleton and the History Museum at the Castle, where

the past comes alive through stories, photographs and artifacts of people of the Fox Valley. The Museum holds artifacts and archival materials that document the social, cultural,

economic and technological history of the Lower Fox River Valley and Outagamie County. International and national figures with ties to the area, such as Harry Houdini, are also represented with materials that shed light on their lives. The History Museum building

is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally a Masonic Temple built in 1923. After the history museum, tour participants will go to the Fox River Mall for some pre-holiday shopping. Lunch will be on your own in the Mall food court.

Tuesday, December 9! The December Holiday tour will transport trip goers to the

beautiful Osthoff Resort, a four diamond property in Elkhart Lake, for the Old World Christmas Market, a tented market fashioned after the

centuries-old German Christkindl market. This market, a tradition for more than 15 years, has over 70 vendors from around the country and

the world. After enjoying the market, you will head inside the hotel for lunch and a tour of the

resort, which will be decorated beautifully in all its Christmas splendor! After you tour the amazing Osthoff Resort, you will head to the Wreath Factory in Plymouth! Since 1983, the Wreath Factory has been making hand-

crafted wreaths. There will be plenty of fresh wreaths and greenery, holiday gifts and décor! Attendees will receive a tour of the facility and view a demonstration

on wreath making. All participants will also receive 10% off store items!

Staying young takes an understanding that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected. So how do we do this?

How do we stay young in mind, body, and spirit? What steps do we take?

Here are two more simple guidelines that can be easily incorporated into our busy, every-

day lives, which have been proven to help us lead longer, happier, and healthier lives:

Young Spirit: MEDITATE

Taking time to relax, breathe, and calm our thoughts is practically a necessity. Five

minutes of quiet time is like a mini vacation. It doesn’t matter where you are—the car, the

bathroom, the library—anywhere is good. Just find those few precious minutes to recon-

nect with yourself and your spirit, and you will feel younger and fresher.

Young Body: EAT LESS & EAT FRESH

Portions seem to get larger and larger every day. For pennies more we can often double our serving size. Unfortu-

nately, what seems smart for our wallets isn’t necessarily smart for our bodies. A good idea for getting around the

jumbo-sized meals is to eat more fruits and veggies. Try to have a big green salad every day. It’s healthy and filling.

Or carry a bag of baby carrots or an apple for those times when you need a snack. Fresh fruits and vegetables are

full of vibrant energy—a perfect recipe for staying young.

Remember:

When practiced consistently, these steps will bring results almost immediately. Just have fun with them! Staying

young shouldn't be a chore. It doesn't need to be serious either, and it certainly is not complicated. If you enjoy the

process, you are more that halfway there! Check back each month for additional tips on how to stay young– mind,

Our Monday afternoon Pinochle group is looking for more players!! If you

We will be conducting our annual fire drill on Tuesday, October 7th.

At approximately 9am we will be sounding the fire alarms. Everyone in the building must exit and meet in the west parking lot away from the building. You will be given the ‗okay‘ to return to the building when all is clear.

Following the drill, we encourage you to attend the Safety Talk in the Center Assembly, which will be presented by a representative of the Manitowoc Fire Department. He will discuss how the drill went and present important safety tips on how to be safe in your home. Don‘t miss this!

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation

Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience

Apartments? You do not have to live at Manitou Manor to attend. Meals are provided at a suggested donation of $3.50

Art on the Lakeshore

Saturday, October 4th 10a-3pm

Art on the Lakeshore, formerly, Art in the Park, will be at the YMCA this year. There will

be art activity tables set up on the sidewalk along the lake, which will include pumpkin decorating, spinner art, face painting, beaded

bracelets, fall wreath craft and more. This free event is sponsored by the Sunrise

Optimist Club and is open to the public. The event will be held rain or shine (In case of rain the event will move indoors to the gym). Conces-

sions will also be available for purchase.

BUS TRIP POLICY

TRIP SIGN UP Trips are open to all Senior Center members and their guests. Those registering may only register one (1) other person other than themselves. In order to ensure that a trip will run, we need 30 peo-ple. Early registration is key. *Please know that all participants must be independent or travel with a care giver.

PAYMENT Payment must be made at the time of registration. Sign up can be taken over the phone with a credit card or in person with payment by cash, check or credit card.

BUS LOADING ORDER Seating is according to the order of sign up. The computer program keeps track of the sign up order and names will be called according to that list. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time to ensure enough time for loading.

PARKING Please park in the small parking lot area located across the street from the west parking lot off of Pe-to Street.

TRIP CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY

If cancellation is made before registration deadline– you will get a full refund (less a $2 cancellation fee). If cancellation is made after the deadline, a refund is not guaranteed, unless someone fills your seat. If you wish to cancel the trip for any reason, you must call the Sr. Center to check if there is a wait list started. In the event there is a wait list, you will be withdrawn from the trip and we will pull the next person on the wait list to fill your spot. If your spot is filled, you will receive a refund. In the

event there is not a wait list, you do have the option to find your own replacement or forfeit the cost of the trip. That person must be 55yrs or older and you must inform the Sr. Center office as to who is taking your spot so that you are removed from the roster and your replacement is added.

UNANNOUNCED TRIP CHANGES While we make every effort to keep to the scheduled itinerary, a substitution to part of the trip may be made due to unforeseen circumstances beyond out control.

BUS BUCKS Bus Bucks in the amount of $5.00 will be given out whenever there is a full bus of 54 people. One ticket per person per trip will be allowed. These bus bucks may be used towards any Senior Center arranged tour.

For those who participate in Breakfast and

Birthday bingo, please limit yourself to no more than TWO cups of coffee. Additional

cups will be available for $0.30 each. Attendees may not fill their personal mugs, the provided foam cups must be used.

These policies are in place to keep all things fair and equal among members. If you have any questions regarding this, please ask at

the front desk.

The Parkinson's support group is a gathering of people whose lives are affected

by Parkinson's disease who come together to seek information, voice their concerns

and mutually share their experiences. The group offers social and emotional support to patients and their care partners,

education and information from peers and professionals. The meetings provide an opportunity to discuss experiences and

feelings and to share information and solutions to common problems.

Parkinson‘s support group is held at the Senior Center on the 4th Thursday of each month (not June, July, August) at 1:30pm.

The Manitowoc Senior Center, in conjunction

with Holy Family Memorial, will be holding two flu shot clinics at the Senior Center in October.

Instrument Specialist, from Abundant Life Hearing Health will be will be presenting Hearing Loss-What? When? Why? at the Senior Center on Monday, September 8 at 1pm. Participants

will learn about demographics and statistics on hearing loss; causes, what happens

physically, and types of hearing loss; how to prevent hearing loss (and further hearing loss). They will also discuss what new, exciting technology is available, how it works and how it

helps. Register at the Senior Center front desk or call 686-3060. Free and open to the public.

Did you know that the Manitowoc County Retired Educators Association has a board meeting at

the Senior Center the 2nd Monday of each month? The Board is always

looking for new board members, such as retired teachers, teacher aides, administrators, support staff, etc. If you

are interested in becoming a part of this board, you are invited to attend the next

meeting on Monday, October 13 @ 9am

Ingredients 1 tablespoon prepared chocolate frosting 24 mini vanilla wafer cookies (such as nilla) 24 milk chocolate candy kisses 24 butterscotch chips Directions Smear a small amount of frosting onto the flat bottom of a candy kiss. Press onto the flat bottom of the vanilla wafer. Smear a little more frosting onto the flat bottom of the butterscotch chip, and press onto the rounded top of the cookie. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Set aside to dry; about 30 minutes.

Ingredients 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh sage 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and

grated (about 4 cups) 1 large glove of garlic, finely chopped 1 1/2 cups Arborio rice 1 cup dry white wine 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Directions 1. Warm the broth in a small saucepan over low

heat 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large saucepan

over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and pepper and cook for 4 minutes. Add the sage and cook for 1 minute. Add the squash and garlic and cook until the squash begins to soften, about 3 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes

3. Add the wine and cook, stirring frequently, until the liquid is absorbed, about 3 minutes. Add the broth 1/2 cup at a time, stirring occasionally and waiting until it is absorbed before adding more. It should take about 30 minutes for all the broth to be absorbed.

4. Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan.

Spoon into individual bowls.

Pizza and dessert in one…Yes please! Ingredients 1/2 of a (15-ounce) package folded , refrigerated, unbaked pie crust (1 crust) 1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds 1 (8-ounce) package light cream cheese (Neufchatel), softened 3 tablespoons apple juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 packets Equal® sweetener or 1 teaspoon Equal® for Recipes 4 medium tart apples, cored, peeled and sliced (3 1/2 cups) 1 cup apple juice 1/4 cup golden raisins 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons apple juice 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 packets Equal® sweetener or 3/4 teaspoon Equal® for Recipes

Directions 1- Unfold pie crust; roll out on floured surface to form a 12-inch circle. Place, floured side down, into a 10-inch tart pan with removable bottom. Press up sides. Trim and remove excess pastry. Prick bottom and sides with fork. Line with a double thickness of foil. Bake in a 450*F (230*C) oven for 8 minutes. Remove foil. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes more or till golden. Cool on wire rack. 2- Meanwhile, chop 1/4 cup of the almonds. Beat together softened cheese, 3 tablespoons ap-ple juice, vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

and 3 packets Equal® or 1 teaspoon Equal® for Recipes. Fold in chopped nuts. Spread mixture evenly in cooled crust. Set aside. 3- In large skillet combine apples, 1 cup apple juice, the raisins and 1/4 teaspoon ground cin-namon. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat and sim-mer, covered, 2 to 4 minutes or till apples are just tender. Quickly remove apples and raisins with slotted spoon. Combine 2 tablespoons ap-ple juice and cornstarch; add to skillet. Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Remove from heat; add 2 packets Equal® or 3/4 teaspoon Equal® for Recipes Fold apples into glaze; spoon over cream cheese layer. Sprinkle with remaining almonds. Cool, cover and chill until serving time. *Makes 10 servings. Source: diabeticconnect.com

Queen Berdeva called the meeting portion of our Tea to order. The hostess for September

were Dorothy Blasczyk, Bonnie Willems, and Georgeen Tienor. They served a delicious lunch of sandwiches and really, really good desserts. The wine wasn't bad either. The

hostesses for October are Donna Durben, Carol Parker and Jeanette Kakuk. Birthday Red Hatters are Denise Beyer, Marilyn Neumeyer, and Mary Ann Preston. We serenaded them in Red Hat style. Perry Willems was the entertainment. He led us in Karaoke and al-

so sang for us. Thanks Perry for a great job. We had a great time singing some of our favor-ite songs and finally finding out what some of the words were to the songs.

October Tea will be a costume party.

Queen Berdeva wants everyone to dress up.

The October luncheon will be on October 23rd, Wednesday at Wisco Tech at 11:30am. Wisco Tech is at the corner of Mirro Drive and Memorial Drive. It is a new place for us to

try, so you'all come. Queen Berdeva reported that the picnic was a huge success. She received many comments

on how nice everything was. There were a lot of door prizes and the baskets were so pretty and full of goodies. (On a side note---the basket I won was great, a big bottle of wine,

jewelry, a Red Hat Tea cookbook , a shirt and a boa. I think I remembered everything.) The guests thought the food was Delicious. The entertainment, YAH Dancers and The Red Hat Singers were Magnifico. A gigantic Thank you goes out to all the Red Hatters who

worked at the picnic. The kitchen crew, Audrey Behnke, Dorothy Blasczyk, Kathy Fischer and Gloria Mankins did a fabulous job with the food presentation and the clean up. Thank you all for your hard work.

Shirley Oswald mentioned that there is a lot of supplies in the storage area, so hostesses

please check when your turn comes. Bonnie Willems bought them. Thanks Bonnie. Hostesses, you can use the back door for bringing your dessert and other supplies for your tea. There are also carts available.

In November we will have a rummage sale. Red Hat and other stuff.
