Newsletter of St Aidan’s Foundation October 2011 here is no doubt that St Aidan’s has undergone a dramatic and striking transformation in the last few years, with over $10 million in new facilities introduced in 2010 and a total of $20 million of capital works projects, facility upgrades and land acquisitions over the last nine years. Buoyed by the generous support of the wider school community (parents, alumni and friends) the St Aidan’s Foundation has played a pivotal role in raising funds to facilitate these projects, contributing over $3 million in the last decade. The $8.6 million Christine Hartland Centre (CHC) and the $2.5 million Charma Place Junior School Library represent state-of- the-art educational and cultural facilities, ensuring St Aidan’s girls have access to the highest quality educational environment possible. As we continue to enjoy these wonderful new facilities, it is important to remember that our work, and your support, must be ongoing to ensure that our current students, and those of generations to come, have access to the highest standard educational environment. This year we are continuing to support the repayment of the School’s loan for these major facilities and revise the facility plan for our next project. Looking ahead, the school is also planning for the introduction of Kindergarten in 2012, and the rejuvenation of classrooms to allow for this. We encourage you to help us achieve these goals and make an investment in your daughter’s future at the school, by financially supporting the Foundation via personal donation, payment of building fund fees, bequests or by supporting our exciting fundraising events, such as the upcoming Father Daughter Disco. here is no doubt that St Aidan’s has undergone a dramatic and striking transformation in the last few years, with over $10 million in new facilities introduced in 2010 and a total of $20 million of capital works projects, facility upgrades and land acquisitions over the last nine years.
Buoyed by the generous support of the wider school community (parents, alumni and friends) the St Aidan’s Foundation has played a pivotal role in raising funds to facilitate these projects, contributing over $3 million in the last decade.
The $8.6 million Christine Hartland Centre (CHC) and the $2.5 million Charma Place Junior School Library represent state-of-the-art educational and cultural facilities, ensuring St Aidan’s girls have access to the highest quality educational environment possible.

Foundation fundraising
the cornerstone of our transformation
The 2011 school year continues to be a surprising one for both the board and myself with the ongoing generosity of the parents and donors enabling the Foundation to continue suppor ting the school and its students through its three main trust funds - the Building, Library and Scholarship funds.
As mentioned in earlier newsletters the generosity of donors enabled the Foundation to suppor t families af fected by the floods in a way that made a real dif ference to our fellow school families.
As the year has continued the board has considered carefully the directions of its future fundraising efforts and we are pleased to say that our previous strategies of helping the school repay debt incurred from the construction of the Christine Hartland Centre will continue throughout the remainder of this year. This impressive new building is a real centre of activity, proving how important it is in the students’ school lives.
Upcoming events also continue to be the focus of the board and its supporters, with the Father Daughter Disco being the highlight of the end-of-year calendar for many of the girls, and the exclusive lunch in early 2012 with celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue at South Bank Sur f Club for the parents. Tickets for the disco are selling fast and are always a lot of fun, especially when a table of girls get to showcase their dads to their friends. (Costume outfits for the fathers are a big par t of the disco night with many an Elvis sighting occurring!)
Once again it is a pleasure to thank all of our supporters on behalf of the board for your continued suppor t of the Foundation.
Ps – there are still a few chairs left to be named in the CHC – these are a great way of leaving a memory behind of your daughter’s time at the school. Get in quick before they are gone!
The board this month farewells Lynn Woodhouse, who we thank for her significant contribution to the Foundation during her three-year term as a director.
The success of many of the Foundation’s events can be attributed to Lynn’s involvement. Lynn’s youngest daughter Kate is in Year 11, so we hope to see Lynn at future events.

The AidArena online charity auction website has raised $1500 for the St Aidan’s Foundation with the auction of a stunning Kingsclif f holiday, generously donated by parents Mark and Katie Wilson. Peter Withey was the winning bidder and he and his family will enjoy two weeks accommodation in a luxury three-bedroom penthouse with spectacular ocean views.
So far, 30 auction items have been listed on the AidArena website, raising a total of $2,297 for the benefit of St Aidan’s fundraising initiatives.
Parents and friends of St Aidan’s are encouraged to register with AidArena and both donate items for auction and bid on listed items as a fun, effective way to raise funds for the Foundation’s development projects and capital appeals.
To donate an auction item or to bid on existing auction items, visit www.aidarena.com and register, then visit the St Aidan’s Foundation page under ‘Charities’.
St Aidan’s has always had a particularly strong, enthusiastic drama community and this year, the girls, along with drama teacher Mr Gerry Kay, rallied together to produce a play for charity. Remember This was performed at the Christine Hartland Centre from 13 to 15 April, raising nearly $8,000 for the Second Chance Programme, a not-for-profit organisation who help place homeless women in safe, secure and permanent accommodation. Here’s what the girls had to say…
At the beginning of the Remember This process, we could have never have imagined the success that the production would be. We watched as Mr Kay’s play grew from first idea to an epic, and were soon enjoying reading scenes from the script, draft after draft. The intimate cast of five soon grew to 30, with girls from all grades coming together. The historically rich plot, mapping the path forged by Australian women since the Great Depression, gave us a new insight into the struggles and triumphs of women in the 20th century.
The grueling rehearsals soon consumed every spare minute. Mr Kay was counting on us to do his script the justice it deserved, and come opening night, we were confident that the audience would Remember This for all the right reasons. All three sell-out performances went off without a hitch! The audiences’ reaction was overwhelming, with people lining the isles come closing night.
Although Prime Minister Julia Gillard could not make the main performance (having been treated to a special advanced screening), we were fortunate enough to have in the audience the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wensley AC, the director of the Queensland Theatre Company, Wesley Enoch, and celebrated author Dr Dale Spender, head of the Second Chance Programme.
This has been an incredible experience, the kind that we will never forget, but one day share with our grand-kids. We give our heartfelt thanks to Mr Kay, who put his sanity on the line for the show, and to Mr Matthews, perhaps the best dancer IT has to offer. May you always Remember This.

The Father Daughter Breakfast was attended by 205 dads and daughters on Thursday 1 September in the Christine Hartland Centre. Guest speaker was award-winning journalist and children’s book author, Richard Newsome, whose next book is The Mask of Destiny (to be released in October 2011).
As one of the Foundation’s most exciting raffle prizes yet, Richard generously offered to name a future character after one lucky girl. And the winner was...Year 12 Sacristan, Felicity Upham! Her name will feature in Richard’s fourth book, to be released in late 2012, so be sure to grab a copy and see what Felicity’s character is like. St Aidan’s Principal Karen Spiller said Richard’s address reminded the fathers and daughters of some important life lessons. “These lessons include perseverance, to be respectful of all people you meet but not naive, attack life from the front foot and discover what you are passionate about,” she said.
“Richard entertained us all with images and anecdotes from growing up; which certainly resonated with those of us attending school in Queensland through the 60s and 70s, Richard reminded us all to follow our dreams.”
The STAGE Dance girls wowed the audience with their ‘Beach Babes’ performance and an impressive $6,000 was raised overall. thanks goes to Burrell Stockbroking for their generous sponsorship of the event.
The Mother Daughter Breakfast, held on Friday 6 May in the Christine Hartland Centre, had a fantastic turnout, with 124 mothers and 141 girls attending, raising over $4,000 for the Foundation. Guest speaker Andrea Moor, a past student and highly acclaimed actor and director, captivated the audience with her experiences as a student of NIDA and forming her own production company.
