I don’t believe that Toyota’s FJ Cruiser, modeled after the classic FJ40 from the 1960s, has suffered either fate. I liked its Tonka Truck styling when it was revealed in 2003 (and then launched in 2007), and still enjoy it today. The current FJ continues with the same styling: beefy tires on 17-inch alloys pushed to the corners, large wheel openings, wide track and 79- inch height with roof racks. Coming or going, the FJ cuts an imposing Hummeresque figure. Fans of the old FJ40 will appreciate the heritage cues, such as the white roof and round headlamps that are tied into the front grille. Wrap-around rear windows are another signature FJ element, and while you’d think they would enhance rear visibility, the huge side pillars they tie into prove otherwise. Thankfully, the FJ comes with big-rig side mirrors that stick out like Dumbo’s ears, and help with the massive blind spot. this long-travel suspension delivers a surprisingly quiet and forgiving ride, yet is sure-footed on the trail.
Inside, the FJ wears a look that pays tribute to its off-road ability. Most noticeable are the body-coloured door inserts and console faceplate that houses big rectangular buttons, along with beefy HVAC knobs that can be operated while wearing winter gloves.
My tester, a 2011 model, was equipped with the five-speed automatic ($33,725), and also came with the Adventure Package ($5,995) that includes a cool dash-mounted Accessory Meter Cluster that features a floating ball-type compass, inclinometer and temperature gauge.
The 2012 model is a carryover, and the Adventure group has been replaced by the ‘Urban Package’, which for $5,020 provides keyless entry, power mirrors, backup camera, 10-speaker JBL audio system with subwoofer, cruise control, 115-volt power outlet, leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear privacy glass, cargo mat and the previously mentioned multi info display. Last year’s roof rack and Bilstein shocks have been dropped, but backup sensors added, which are nice when you’re doing most of your time in the urban jungle.
Besides, if you want the rack and
Bilsteins, there’s an offroad package that includes this equipment and more.
All FJ Cruisers get water repellent seat fabrics with a rubber floor and all-weather floor mats a sensible combination whether you’re transporting a couple of mud-covered mountain bikers or your ice cream-covered kids.
Front seats offer plenty of butt and shoulder room, and the seatbacks have been carved out to enhance knee room in the rear, which is tight for lanky passengers. There’s also decent head room, but the upright windshield provides a relatively narrow band of glass, making it difficult to spot traffic signals from up close.
The cargo floor is made of a tough, moulded plastic, as are the backs of the rear 60/40 split folding seats, giving you an easy-to-clean and damage-resistant surface for mucky boots and cargo. Door panels are also a rugged plastic.
Just about everything below the window line is a dark colour to help hide the dirt you haven’t yet wiped or hosed off.
Overall, the cabin appears utilitarian but not unattractive. I’d call it ‘contractor chic.’ And despite the vehicle’s robust demeanour, it is a comfortable environment for both driver and passengers.
The interior is also relatively free from road noise, squeaks and rattles. Even wind noise is minimal, which is
unexpected due to the FJ’s boxy styling.Sure, there’s a fair bit of exhaust
noise, but that adds to its offroad cred. Save the silky exhaust note for crossovers and city-slicker SUVs.
New for 2012, the base six-speed manual model has returned. From $32,725, you get a good, basic bush-basher that includes a full-time 4WD with centre differential lock, rear differential lock and two-speed transfer case, along with vehicle stability control (VSC) and active traction control (ATRAC).
The automatic gets an automatic disconnecting differential and two-speed transfer case. VSC and ATRAC, along with rear diff lock are also standard.
The FJ has one oddity – the rear suicide doors. But these open nearly 90 degrees to give good access to the relatively tight quarters in back. And the rear two-part hatch (with flip-up glass) makes it easy to load and unload small or long objects.
Of course, comparisons will naturally be drawn between the FJ and the highly-capable Jeep Wrangler.
And like the Wrangler, the FJ Cruiser does rise boldly in a sea of bland sport utilities – perhaps even more so, as there are fewer on the road.
It may not be the most cushy vehicle in this segment, but the FJ Cruiser is definitely a standout, and is surprisingly practical for a purpose-built off roader.
Toyota FJContinued from Pg. B3
Instruments and controls are well laid out, easy to read and operate. The HVAC system’s large rotary knobs can be turned with a gloved hand, and the body-coloured console faceplate is a nice touch.
The FJ’s clamshell doors open nearly 90 degrees for easy access to the rear seats.

Purchase of exotic gullwing sports car led to Mercedes and BMW coming to Canada
The Mercedes Benz gullwing coupes owned by Poldi Bentley and his son Peter line up with other exotic cars on a small island in the Fraser River off the Eburne sawmill owned by Canadian Forest Products.
Peter Bentley followed his father’s footsteps to head up B.C.-based forest giant Canadian Forest Products (Canfor). He also shared his father’s love of exotic fast sports cars. In the mid 1950s, father and son each bought new Mercedes Benz 300SL gullwing coupes – then the world’s fastest production automobiles.
That led to Mercedes Benz coming to Canada.
Leopold ‘Poldi’ Bentley was the first British Columbian to take delivery of the famed gullwing coupe. His was a silver 1955 model – the first edition. The car would go 160 miles per hour. His son Peter was so taken with the car, he got a white 300SL gullwing in 1956.
“There were very few of these cars in British Columbia in the 1950s,” Peter Bentley recalls. “Olympian and engineer Carl Stangl and John Blomme had gullwing coupes along with a Mr. West in Qualicum and there was one in Victoria.”
There were no Mercedes Benz dealerships in Canada so the sports cars had to be imported directly from Stuttgart. Poldi Bentley had a grease pit dug in his garage so he could have his 300SL serviced at home by flying in a factory trained mechanic from Los Angeles.
The enterprising Poldi Bentley had started Canadian Forest Products with his brother-in-law John Prentice after escaping the Nazis in his native Vienna in 1938. He saw an opportunity to
introduce Mercedes Benz to Canada. In 1956, he got the Canadian
distribution rights for Mercedes for Canada and picked Vancouver to open the first dealership in the country. It was located in the Maynard’s Auction building on West Georgia near Bute Street. The dealership eventually moved across to the south side of the street into a new building.
Partners in the venture included John Prentice and Peter Bentley along with Frank Griffiths, Ron Cliff and Fred Brown.
In 1960, Peter Bentley bought his wife a silver blue 300SL roadster as a graduation gift when she earned her degree at UBC as an adult student following the birth of three of their five children.
Peter Bentley recalls the relationship with the Mercedes Benz factory being difficult. “We would order six cars and they would ship the wrong colours and tell us we were lucky to get them,” he says.
When the factory developed the four-wheel-drive Unimog truck, it was underpowered and not suited for Canadian use. The factory wanted one Unimog sold for every three Mercedes cars. Then the factory wanted the Vancouver dealership to sell one compact DKW car for every two Mercedes cars delivered.
In the early 1960s, the Bentleys and their partners sold the Canadian distribution rights back to Mercedes Benz. But the Bentleys weren’t through with distributing German-built automobiles.
Peter Bentley went to a small
international trade fair at the Pacific International Exhibition in 1965 and saw his first BMW. It was a silver 2000 coupe. “They said they were going to ship it back to Germany after the show so I bought it for $5,000 as is, where is,” Peter Bentley recalls.
Poldi Bentley was so impressed with his son’s BMW, he flew to the company’s headquarters in Munich to discover that BMW didn’t think there was a market for their cars in Canada. They were wrong.
They set up BMW west with two former top Mercedes Benz Canada executives and kept control of BMW East. Peter and Poldi Bentley each had 35 per cent of BMW Canada. They introduced the 3 series cars to Canada and the company became the world’s largest independent BMW distributorship. BMW bought them out in 1986.
Peter Bentley still loves BMW cars. He has a 750 series and an X5 SUV. His
wife Sheila drives a BMW 550 model.Always a lover of cars, Peter
Bentley’s first had been a 1946 Pontiac coupe handed down from his mother. When he attended the University of British Columbia, he drove a new red 1950 Ford convertible purchased in the fall of 1949 at Brown Bros. Ford.
The sports car bug bit hard when he acquired his father’s 1953 Jaguar XK120 coupe. He took it racing at the Abbotsford airport and other locations. But the real track racing started when he got the 300SL gullwing coupe.
In 1957, he and Carl Stangl took their 300SL gullwing sports cars to race in Bremerton, Wa. They were placed behind three new fuel-injected Corvettes at the start. Other entrants behind them included much lighter Porches and Jaguars. The top speed on his 300SL was 162 mph.
Both he and Carl Stangl passed the Corvettes right away going up a steep

hill and into some turns where the Corvettes collided, blocking the track.
“I got so excited that we were winning the race that I forgot to turn on my auxiliary fuel switch and lost power,” Peter Bentley recalls. “I had to take an escape road and ended up coming in second.”
He also took his gullwing Mercedes Benz for a lap test on the opening day of the legendary Westwood Race Track in Coquitlam. “They were such magnificent looking cars with performance way ahead of their time,” he says of the 300SL sports cars.
So what happened to his 1956 300SL? Once
again, he had followed in his father’s footsteps to purchase a Ferrari in 1962. He sold his car to a Calgary man who totaled it near Banff after just one week while driving in wet conditions.
He doesn’t know what happened to his father’s silver gullwing after it was sold. His wife traded her silver blue 300SL roadster for a newer 250SL roadster that had more room. Her original 300SL roadster is now being restored in Victoria for its current owner by internationally recognized 300SL expert Rudi Koniczek.

Now in its third generation, the new BMW 6 Series Coupe takes the luxury 2+2 concept a step further by matching enhanced comfort and elegant design with sporting performance on an even higher level.
The BMW 6 Series Coupe features a sweeping Coupe roofline while the long bonnet, short over-hangs, set-back passenger compartment with Hofmeister kink, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the typical proportions of a BMW Coupe more than any other model.
Two exceptional BMW turbocharged gasoline engines and a twin turbocharged diesel powerplant, a newly developed chassis and a host of class-leading driver assistance technology ensure that the new BMW 6 Series Coupe is full of substance,
while interior space and comfort have been enhanced.
Longer, lower and wider, the new car is larger in every dimension than its predecessor except height, where it now stands half a centimetre closer to the ground.
At 4,894 mm in length, the new model is 74 mm longer than its predecessor, while the wheelbase has stretched similarly, to 2,855mm.
The car has also grown by 39 mm in width, and now measures 1,894 mm across, while 5mm have been shaved off its height.
As standard the new BMW 6 Series Coupe is equipped with xenon headlights that have BMW’s familiar double corona look while high-quality chrome elements, such as the fog lamps consisting of a string of three LED units, on the outer edges of the front apron accentuate the width of the car.

Reflecting the wide variety Canadian new car buyers are faced with, the third annual Canadian Automotive Jury’s Best of the Best finalists range from entry-level compacts to luxury-sport sedans.
The Jury’s annual Best of the Best Awards are unique in Canada.
The not-for-profit organization is independently funded by its Jurors, senior journalists who account for the vast majority of automotive industry coverage in Canada.
Also noteworthy, the Jury’s Best of the Best finalists don’t exclusively focus on a specific model within a family of vehicles or only “all-new” models, and include the reigning 2011
Canadian Automotive Jury Best of the Best Winner, the Ford Fiesta, which is automatically included as a finalist.
Five European models, three domestic, two Korean, and two Japanese models make up the dozen 2012 Best of the Best Finalists, from which the 2012 Best of the Best winner will be announced in November.

Mazda has become the first car manufacturer to successfully develop vehicle components using 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel.
This super-strength steel will debut in the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV that will go on sale in 2012.
Mazda’s new production technology uses 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel to fabricate bumper beams, which fit inside the front and rear bumpers and minimize damage in the event of a collision.
The bumper bars are 20 per cent stronger and 4.8 kilograms lighter than previous versions and are a key part of Mazda’s next-generation, lightweight and highly rigid vehicle architecture.
The new body-architecture was developed as part of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology program and the CX-5’s bodyshell incorporates a new energy absorbing structure as well as expanded use of high-tensile steel to reduce weight.
The use of high-tensile steel enables vehicle parts to be thinner yet still retain the same degree of strength as previous, thicker components.
This leads to significant savings in vehicle weight.
The new Mazda CX-5 CUV will be the first vehicle to use 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel for its bumpers.

Stay safe while driving in the rain this winterBy Kate WellsdriveWise BC
The rain is back! As drivers, we need to do what we can to
adjust our driving to B.C.’s ever-changing weather conditions. When driving in the rain, motorists risk their tires losing traction with the asphalt and the ability to see clearly down the road.
While most people know to slow down, many other helpful tips can keep you and other road users safer.
1. After a dry spell, use extreme caution. Roads are much slicker because of the engine oil and grease build-up. The first rainfall makes the roads extremely slippery, and the first
few hours are the most dangerous.2. Slow down! The posted speed limit
in B.C. is “under ideal conditions.” When it’s pouring down with rain and you can’t see properly...slow down!
3. Brake earlier than you would normally. This helps YOU control the speed of traffic behind you. It will also increase the stopping distance between you and the cars in front of you. Reaction times might be slower during the rain due to visibility. Make sure you are driving defensively at all times.
4. Start your day earlier than normal. This gives you extra time to
reach your destination, which allows you to stay at a suitable speed for the road conditions.
5. USE YOUR HEADLIGHTS! Daytime running lights are great for traffic ahead of you to see you, however they do NOT turn on your rear lights. If you turn your headlights on, you are visible from the front and back of your car – very helpful to other drivers.
6. In fog, use low-beam headlights. High beams bounce off the fog ahead of you, making it even more difficult to see where you’re going. If your car is equipped with fog lights, you may want those on.
Hydroplaning is what happens when your car skids over a pool of water that has formed on the road. Tires will literally float above the water so there is no traction whatsoever with the road.
If your car is hydroplaning, DO NOT BRAKE! Carefully take your foot off the accelerator and look and steer in the direction you are wanting to go. In addition, ensure your tires are properly inflated as poorly inflated tires tend to hydroplane much more.
In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to drive in bad weather!
But as drivers in a province such as British Columbia, we need to adjust our driving for the weather.

Ford F-150 – the most fuel-efficient and capable full-size pickup on the market – is getting fine-tuned for 2012, with a new FX appearance package and several driveline updates and new technologies to further improve and refine the driving experience.
“The new FX package delivers a distinctive style that truck buyers are looking for without compromising on any of the F-150’s rugged qualities,” says Raj Sarkar, F-150 marketing manager. “It expands our range of specialty vehicles with custom elements that customers previously could find only in the aftermarket.”
The new FX appearance package is
available on both FX4 and FX2 trucks and delivers a unique look with stealthy, flat-black accents. The look is set off with black fender and tailgate badges that feature red lettering, which is carried into the interior with a red-stitched steering wheel.
The FX’s interior also features black leather seating surfaces with red perforations and red piping. Unique
interior touches include black-painted dash accents, brushed-metal surfaces, and satin shifter knob, door handles and air conditioning vent bezels.
The package is available with all FX colors.
Also new for 2012, the FX luxury package now offers cooled front seats, which combine with the previously available heated seats.

Porsche Camp4 Canada returns to Quebec with new challenges and next-generation 911Winter driving program encourages drivers to explore the extremes of Porsche sports cars – and the Canadian climate
Metroland MediaCarguide Magazine
Late this coming January, a fleet of more than 20 Porsche Caymans and 911 Carrera models will again descend on the Mecaglisse snow- and ice-driving facility, marking the return of Porsche’s thrilling Camp4 Canada driving program to the Mont-Tremblant region.
Defying the conventional wisdom that says sports cars should be garaged for the winter, Camp4 Canada will in fact be the first opportunity for North American customers to experience the next-generation Porsche 911 from behind the wheel.
Behind the wheel of powerful rear- and all-wheel drive sports cars, including the all-new “991” generation 911 Carrera S, Camp4 Canada participants will learn valuable winter driving skills and explore multiple specialized snow-bound tracks at Mecaglisse, a dedicated snow- and ice-driving facility outside of Montreal.
Two road courses are complimented by an enormous winter skidpad, all of which allow drivers to explore the Porsches’ limits in safe and controlled situations.
Using the new Esterel Suites Spa & Lake as its base, Camp4 Canada is ideally situated in one of the most picturesque parts of the country.
Located about one hour from
Montreal, the unique resort is surrounded by two lakes and miles of forests and combines fine cuisine and modern decor for participants from Canada, the U.S. and around the world.
The Mont-Tremblant location also makes it easy for participants to integrate Camp4 Canada into a more extended holiday that might include skiing in the Laurentian Mountains.
Porsche Canada will offer only two three-day waves of Camp4 Canada and one wave of Camp4S. Wave 1 runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, 2012; wave 2 from Feb. 3 to 6 and wave 3, Camp4S, from Feb. 7 to 10; corporate one-day programs are also available.
The price of $4,995 for Camp4 (Camp4S pricing TBD) includes accommodations, food and transfers between the hotel and the driving centre.
Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-PORSCHE or by visiting www.porsche.ca/camp4
Porsche will again offer its acclaimed winter driving school, Camp4S, north of Montreal starting in late January.

Question: What do you get when you cross a Nissan Juke with a Nissan GT-R?
Answer: The fastest, most exciting and daring compact crossover in the world.
Not content with re-shaping the new car market by pioneering the crossover – a success reflected in the soaring sales of its Qashqai and Juke models – Nissan is now creating the Juke-R, the first ever super crossover.
Currently under development, the bold design of the Juke is clear to see.
Under the hood is a 3.8-litre twin-
turbo V6 engine adopted directly from Nissan’s flagship supercar.
Under the trunk floor hides the GT-R’s six-speed transaxle, with the front and rear ends joined by a modified GT-R 4WD driveline and prop shaft, while chunky 20-inch RAYS forged alloy rims fill each wheel arch.
The interior merges crossover and supercar with finesse, as the Juke’s dashboard has been transformed to accommodate the gauges, dials and seven-inch customizable LCD display from the GT-R.
The Juke’s iconic centre console, inspired by the fuel tank of a motorcycle, remains while the rest of the interior has the look of a machine
bred for the track. Twin race-seats with five-point harnesses sit inside a visible roll cage that gives FIA safety standards as well as enhanced rigidity to provide the ultimate performance.
For full details on Juke-R and to follow the car’s development, visit www.facebook.com/NissanJukeOfficial

Results from consumer research conducted by Be Car Care Aware clearly shows today’s youth are neglecting their vehicles, posing a safety threat to not only themselves, but others on the road.
Today’s driving youth (18 to 24 years) are less likely than more experienced drivers to change their oil regularly and one-in-five have no idea when to change their oil at all.
Only 45 per cent of youth bring their vehicle in for maintenance at least once a year versus 76 per cent of people over 50.
Ten per cent of young drivers reported that they never put air in their tires and nine per cent admitted they do not know how to determine the correct tire pressure.
These results identify an urgent need for parents to educate the young drivers in their house about the need for regular vehicle maintenance.
If you don’t know much about automotive maintenance and repair, do yourself a favour and learn it along with your kids.
Here are a few tips:• Explain that all cars, new and old,
need regular attention. Make sure your teenager knows and follows the maintenance schedule for his/her car. Preventive maintenance increases safety and saves money.
• Remember the owner’s manual. This automotive bible is full of information about your car.
• Take them to the repair facility, the tire store, the body shop and wherever you have automotive work performed. Get them accustomed to the automotive world – its people, places, jargon and prices.
• Make a plan. What happens if the car breaks down, he/she has an accident, or the car gets stolen? What if no adults are home to receive the call?
For many parents, driving age is the final frontier. Certainly it is an important rite of passage for teenagers. Don’t let your child pass into this stage of his/her life without being prepared.
Take the time and the necessary materials to make your young driver feel competent and secure.
For safer teen drivers, read this before handing over the keys

Get a grip on winter driving.
With Total Tire Care from Ford, my car is ready for winter and I didn’t even get my hands dirty.
Fall is here, and each October brings National Car Safety Month.
Be Car Care Aware Canada is urging Canadians to look down the road, both literally and symbolically, to address safety needs before they occur.
This October, much of the focus will be on children.
Even a slow-speed crash can cause severe injury or even death to children if they are not properly restrained. To
ensure a child’s safety, follow these simple steps regarding child safety seats:
• Properly install your child seats.• Ensure harness straps fit snugly
around the child’s body.• A rear-facing infant seat should
never be installed in a seating position equipped with an air bag.
• Canadian law says the forward-facing child restraint must be
secured to the vehicle frame using the tether strap at the top of the seat.
Booster seats are required for children under the age of eight or who weigh between 18 - 36 kg (40-80 lbs) or who stand less than 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.
A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following criteria is met: the child turns eight
years old; the child weighs 36 kg (80 pounds); or the child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.
Children 12 and under should be properly restrained in the back seat, especially if there is a passenger-side air bag.
Finally, always set a good example and make sure everyone in the car wears his or her own seat belt.
Remember younger generation during Car Safety Month
