There’s a popular expression in Peru used to describe foreigners like me. “Tu haces mucha luz,” my Peruvian friends often tell me with a big smile on their face. It’s their way of saying, you stand out like a sore thumb. The phrase means, “You make a lot of light,” if you translate it literally. Growing up as a white, pasty-skinned redhead, I thought I had pretty well adjusted to not fitting in. And then, I moved to South America. Let’s face it, no matter how hard I try, I will never even come close to being “one of them.” I’ve been living on the “outside looking in” for two years now, and while certain things about life in Peru have become more familiar, I continue to yearn for the comforts of home, to be with my family, to feel as though I fit in. You may not have people screaming, “Gringo!” at you as you walk through the streets, but I’m certain that you, too, understand what it means to feel like you don’t belong. I’m certain you too yearn for the comforts of your heavenly home the Lord Jesus is busy preparing for us (John 14:2)! May each and every one of us “make a lot of light” as we travel through this world as “aliens and strangers,” so that our neighbors would “see our good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” (1 Peter 2:11-12)

El Cuy Times is Back! It’s been quite a while since you’ve received an issue of El Cuy Times. And for that, I apologize! My original plan to report back to all my friends, family, and

sending congregations turned out to be much more difficult than anticipated. For the sake of saving time and effort, I’ve been doing my best to keep in touch via the internet (periodic emails and blog posts), and I pray most of you have been able to keep up with God’s mission in Peru that way. With the arrival of my new teammates, I should be able to return to my original plan, and send you a new issue of El Cuy Times on a monthly basis!

Brief Mission Update The past two months have been jam- packed with new and exciting ministry! I spent a good portion of the month of September introducing my new teammates, Jamie and Katie to life on the field. They spent 4 hours a day for the entire month at a language institute in Lima, learning Peruvian Spanish and Culture. Once they finished thier classes, we made the move from Lima to Lunahuana (where we’ll be serving on a permanent basis from now on). Since our arrival, we’ve launched the EFL program, been making preliminary preparations for a Medical Missions trip, and making the Short-Term Missions schedule for 2011. By far the most exciting news I have to report is that we’ve begun a Bible Study group that plans to meet every other week to study the “solas” of the Reformation (Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, Christ Alone)! Please pray that the Lord would guide our study, and we would be able to clearly communicate Christ crucified for the forgiveness of sins to all those who come to be a part of the group.
