Presentation Outline
• Why foundational math?• Using learning objects, applets or Web
Quests• Why pen-based tablet technology?• Using the Notebook Journal• Why a DyKnow workspace –polling, share
control, submitting panels, status, chat… ?• Is there a pen-based tablet in your future?
Why Foundational Math?
• How was it developed?• Who takes it?• Focus – increased use of technology for
teaching and learning• Online textbook• Collaborative teaching and organization
site
Using Learning Objects, Applets, and Web Quests
• Free Grain of Rice http://www.freerice.com/
• NLVM Balancing Equations http://bit.ly/jOlCyB
• Show me the Math! http://showthemath.org/
• Math.com Algebra worksheet generator http://www.math.com/students/worksheet/algebra_sp.htm
Why Pen-Based Tablet Technology?
• Difficult to type math – keyboard restrictions
• Student familiarity with pencil and paper• Easily corrected• Diagramming ideas, decision trees
Teaching with the Notebook Journal
• Word docs/ppt slides printed to Journal • Students download before class
The DyKnow workspace…Polling
Which math do you teach ?
A) Technology - Foundational
B) Business - Foundational
C) Technology - College Diploma
D) Business - College Diploma
Pen colour matters…
Synchronous Communication…
Submit a math problem to discuss in today’s class…
(session>submit panel>ok)
Submit panels-Student Work
Students - the temporary teacher… (share control)/modeling/replay
Share Control – Student Work
Anonymous Response…
• Submit panels• Request status• Polling• Share control
Technological Hurdles
• Tablet PCs • Consistent wireless internet connection• Time constraints/benefits• Stylus vs. pen and virtual binder vs. paper• “…they (tablets) could be a very distracting
because it (takes) your mind away off lectures…when lectures becomes boring I tend to go on websites which is the worst thing I can do …”
Student Response
“…I actually did my work and it was done right and organized which helped for studying.”
“…I tend to pay attention more thus doing better in work and tests”
“…students can share answers anonymously, we can correct each other’s work.”
“I found that the shy students were more comfortable participating through the tablet and shared control in dyknow than standing up and speaking”.
