OCEAN Grove Bowling Club has been voted the best in Victoria at the Clubs Victoria Annual Awards – the biggest awards of their kind in the State. More than 1000 attended the Clubs Victoria Annual Clubs Awards held at the Palladium

Room Crown Casino on Sunday evening 30 November.All Clubs from over Victoria compete in the an-nual Awards which have a judging panel visit the Club for review purposes and the Club prepares a major submission covering the categories they are applying for awards in. A judging panel then makes their selection.The club was also a finalist in the Manager of the Year – Michael Lewis, Employee of the Year - Paula Plunkett, Club Person of the Year – Carl Verbeek and Training Program of the Year.ClubsVIC President Johnnie Walker said: “After much deliberation and a few cups of tea, a well deserved win for Ocean Grove against some heavy duty competition. Gas leak follows rogue wheel

THE jury’s out on whether the State Govern-ment’s recent much trumpeted $38 billion Vic-torian Transport Plan will have any impact on the Ocean Grove and the Bellarine’s dire public transport needs.

According to a media release from MP Lisa Neville the Plan would “boost transport and jobs in Bellarine”.

“This project will see $80 million spent on pro-viding extra services, extended routes, enhanced cross town connections and greater connections with rail services,” Ms Neville said.

“In consultation with the City of Greater Gee-long we will build a central bus interchange in Geelong, improving the network by making it more convenient to change buses.”

Local Public Transport Users Association have been told the funding would help implement the Parsons Brinckerhoff recommendations.

It is understood that the implementation of those recommendations would lead to an im-provement in our local bus system, with more simplified routes and greater frequency. Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads would get a local bus service, linking with services to Geelong at an Ocean Grove bus hub.

Cash for public transport

Fire crews were called to deal with a gas leak at the front of a house in The Parade last week, just days after a double truck wheel crashed through the fence of the same property. Police closed off the road for two hours while the gas company, looked on by the CFA, dealt with the leak which was caused by a digger accidentally cutting through a minor mains. Police say the double wheel remains a mystery as no one had reported it missing.

OCEAN GROVE fire-fighters were called out to a caravan fire in the town in the early hours of Thursday last week.

The caravan was situated in the back yard of a home and broke into flames at 4.10am. No one was injured in the fire which was attended by Ocean Grove’s pumper, tanker and the police.

The fire destroyed the caravan. A CFA spokesperson said the cause of the fire

was unknown but used the incident to remind people of the importance in having smoke alarms, extinguishers and fire blankets in caravans while on holidays.

She said that campers should check that gas bottles and fittings are to the manufacturer’s specifications and that appliances are checked.

Santa made a special appearance at Market-place Shopping Centre earlier this month. A big breakfast was held in the foyer area in front of Safeway and then youngsters had the chance to meet Santa or have their face painted by a clown. The event was organ-ised by the centre traders group.

YES, kids had a look of wonder about them as they filed in through the doorways, but so did adults, mums, dads, pops, and grandmas.

At last the town has the swimming pool it has craved, for about 30 years in fact.

The official opening of Ocean Grove’s swimming pool was a time when politicians would rightly bask in their achievements, the builders could stand proud that they complet-ed the work right on schedule and centre managers could finally begin running the new annexe they long planned for. But that aside, for tots, nippers, teens, and Boroughcoutas swimmings alike, it was the first day of lots of days of fun - and happiness - this facility will bring.

& Sports Centre, is a partnership project involving the City of Greater Geelong which provided $5.5 million and the State Government which contributed $2.5 million.

Cr Jan Farrell who worked dogged-ly to secure the pool for Ocean Grove said she was thrilled to see it open.

“Bellarine residents have been wait-ing for this for years and I’m delight-ed it’s now open,” she said.

“When planning community in-frastructure projects, you strive to accommodate the needs of as many residents as possible, within your budget, and I believe we’ve achieved that here.”

“The community has really em-braced this new centre – already more than 650 people have signed up for the Learn to Swim program, which is terrific!”

OVERCOMING the myths and misconceptions around mental illness will be the theme of a special forum being held in Ocean Grove in February.The Rotary Club of Ocean Grove, supported by Barwon Health, is organ-ising the forum. Recently the project gained the support of local MP and health minister Lisa Neville. The free forum will hear from mental health experts and carers and the key speaker will be “Singing Cobbler” Peter Brocklehurst who will use the forum to speak to residents on depression and anxiety disorders.The Australian Rotary Health fund is giving $8 million over eight years for research into mental illness and has begun a campaign to raise community awareness on mental health issues.The major point, according to the organisers, is to help de-stigmatize mental illness and to bring the community in contact with mental health services and support groups. One-in-five Victorians will suffer from a mental illness at some stage in their lives.The forum will be held on Tuesday February 24 from 7pm–9pm at the Wave Centre in Ocean Grove. First cabin off the rank

OCEAN Grove Bowling Club’s caravan site has taken delivery of the first of 40 new cabins as part of its transformation to Green Valley Cabin Park.

The 42ft 2-bedroom display cabin arrived on a flatbed truck after a drive from Dandenong last week.

The cabin, which is one of three styles, was de-livered by Prestige Jayco and the club is hopeful it will mark the start of other developments on The Terrace site.

Club Grove general manager Michael Lewis said it was a huge relief to reach this stage.

“This is the major milestone, the start of the project,” he said. “It’s taken two-and-a-half years to get to this stage.”

Mr Lewis said the project offered an opportu-nity to buy “affordable holiday homes” in Ocean Grove.

The cabins cannot be permanently occupied.


OCEAN Grove’s Tranquillity Fair is less than a month away and again the organisers have man-aged to round up a great mix of family, alterna-tive and entertainment to appeal to all tastes.

This, the 11th annual Tranquillity Fair, will be held at Ocean Grove Park off Presidents Ave on Saturday January 3 starting at 10am.

The park will be filled to capacity with a huge variety of stalls and a great line up of music will take to the stage from 10.30am right through un-til the close at 4pm.

Topping the musical bill this year is the Go Set, just back from a successful tour in Europe the band is a lively Celtic and punk fusion that has a cult following in Melbourne.

Strengthening the bill even further will be The Sea Gypsies Belly Dancers, Stephen McEwan and The Yes Men, Victoriana Gaye, Sambrose Automobile and Hollie Joyce.

On the stall side, the range of takeaway foods has been increased from last year and includes yabbies, gourmet pizzas, vegetarian, a chocolate fountain, fruit yoghurt and fresh fruit juices.

For those seeking a little serenity of the body and mind after the New Year festivities there will

be various massages, meditation, natural body products, readings and healings and earth medi-cines.

Whilst for the young there are lots of new ac-tivities and stalls such as kites, camels, a kids fer-ris wheel, Tracey’s mobile farm, a cartoonist and other fun experiences.

Entry for adults is just $3 per person whilst for children under 12years its just a smile.

The event is organised by volunteers of Ocean Grove Park Association who maintain and de-velop the park for the community. All proceeds from the Fair go to providing facilities in the park.

Setting their own pathTWO groups of Bellarine year 7 and 8 boys can take a proud step back and look over their work every time they go to school now. The teens have been hard at work with local landscaper and singer song writer Steve McEwan and teacher Greg Burgess creating a new themed pathway and seating at the entrance to the Ocean Grove campus. Their work included constructing straw bale seats, concreting, edging and a pathway –which will culminate in an overall sea and environment theme. Along the way the groups got to write their own songs with Steve, who performed them during a celebratory barbecue.

I FIRST visited Ocean Grove as a ten year old, on holidays with my parents. My two clearest memo-ries are of a circus in Ocean Grove Park, and going to church in the little old wooden St. Peter’s. Lit-tle did I know that I would return in 1996 as the Anglican vicar of St. Peter’s Ocean Grove and All Saints Barwon Heads.

Working from my study in the church house (the Vicarage) is a great advantage. I am thirty sec-onds away from the back door of St. Peter’s, five minutes walk from the Terrace, and ten minutes from the beach.

While I don’t have a “typical” day (one of the pluses about being a minister is that no two days are the same), I usually get up at 6.30am, and af-ter a shower, shave and breakfast, I settle down to a time of prayer and Bible reading – my prayers are wide ranging, for the world, the sick, the local community, etc.

After morning prayer I unlock the church. It is a great thing that we can leave the church open eve-ry day for people to use as a place of prayer, reflec-tion, or just to sit quietly and feel the peace. One of the things I love most about Ocean Grove is that we have had very few instances of vandalism in all the years the church doors have been open.

My day might then involve visiting regional police stations as the police chaplain for the area from Lorne to Lara, and Geelong to Queenscliff; preparing for, and taking services in the two churches or at residential care centres; hospital or pastoral visiting; attending the many meetings that are necessary to ensure the smooth running of a church; preparing for, and conducting weddings and funerals.

At about 5pm each evening, I try to go for a walk to the beach, usually on my own, and sometimes with my wife Gayee. Occasionally I get the bike out and ride to Barwon Heads.

Most evenings are taken up with meetings or preparation in the study. Most ministers work six days a week, and I would average between 60-70 hours per week. My main interest outside the church is our family, and especially our grand-

daughters.Gayee and I have been blessed to have lived in

Ocean Grove for twelve years, and we intend to retire here. We love the community and being be-side the sea. One of my great pleasures is to walk down President’s Avenue or Hodgson Street and watch a ship seemingly float past the end of the street.

The next week will be very busy as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. For me, presents and food play a minor part. Christmas is all about remem-bering the birth of Jesus Christ, who grew up to die on the cross so that we can have the opportu-nity of eternal life in God’s Kingdom.

That’s the Christian message in a nutshell, and

it is what my “job” is all about - to share that mes-sage not only in the church, but also in the wider community.

A deserted promenade - not quite what you would exepect on mid-December weekend

Among the victims of the wild weather was the annual Carols in the Park. Organiser Jon Mamonski said the decision to call it off was made on Sunday morning on safety grounds based on forecasts of high winds. However, Jon said the Carols, which have only ever been cancelled once in their 14 years, would be back again next year.


THE Go Set, the Josh Owen Band and George Kamikawa are head-lining Ocean Grove’s second an-nual Summer Festival next month. Joining them will be the talents of Tessa and Typecast, Sweet Delores and Howlin’ Wind. In addition to that the organisers will have a second stage at the other end of The Terrace where they plan to showcase local talent. The Pogue-ish Go Set will provide a lively finish for the event on Sat-urday January 17 and will follow some class musicians on the main stage. Kamikawa who hails from Japan is an exemplary country blues artist whose playing is typified by raw energy and broad tonal range - from delicate harmonics to sear-ing rips and slides on guitar, soul-ful singing and driving rhythms on harmonica.That contrasts with the style of Diamond Jim and the Tuff Tones who promise a “good rockin’ time”.Josh Owen will bring to the festi-val something completely differ-ent. Honed in the musical melt-

ing pot of Melbourne’s Brunswick Street, Josh’s modern day spin on spiritual soul, a melange of funk jazz soul and reggae, creates an upbeat and sensual urban sound-scape that stretches the bounds of roots music.Huib de Bruijn said the organis-ers were “very excited” about this year’s Ocean Grove Summer Fes-tival which will also see the return of the immensely popular Kidz-zone in front of the Westpac Bank. “The street will be packed with free activities,” he said as well as local trader and club stalls still to be an-nounced. The second stage will have a program for everybody and will start with a kids program in the morning. After that the organisers plan to have a special local talent search. Summer Fest’ lined up


On Friday evening a band playing at the Barwon Heads Hotel brought drummer Adam Robertson closer to home, as his mum lives and works in Ocean Grove. Magic Dirt began its career in the 90’s in Geelong and fronted by Adalita Srsen, the band are raw and loud. She’s not a brilliant singer and I felt that she was perhaps a little worn out due to their demanding tour schedule, however her band were a very supportive, tight unit. Their latest album ‘Girl’ is a lot heavier than more recent albums and if you were wanting to hear more of their Indie style music you may have been disappointed.Magic Dirt regularly offer local bands the chance to support them and local act Mock Turkey (below) were the beneficiaries tonight. In contrast to Adalita, Unx (Trent Stephens) was a very energetic and entertaining front man.

‘BEFORE the Carols’ turned out to be THE carols after wild weather caused the cancellation of the planned park event on Sunday.

The Piping Hot Chicken Shop was full to the rafters for the now annual sing-along session and an endless line up of musos signed up for a chance to lead the fun.

They included flautist Howlin’ Wind leading some of the traditional favourites, Steve McE-wan’s cracking Aussie version of Jingle Bells (open sleigh becomes a rusty ute, get the idea?)

and Dutch Courage employed a few young elf-like percussionists for their great set.

Somewhere along the way a few other tunes turned up, including Clive Whitworth’s the Bellarine Bus System’s Buggered which had just about everyone singing along to the words on his placard.

John Bowman also took time out to thank and award cock and chick of the year – Sam Cooper and Sarah Carol - for their contributions to the local music scene over the past 12 months.

Katt’s classesLOCAL singer songwriter Katt Beames is work-ing on a debut album for 2009. Katt, has busked internationally but recently busked at the Community Market, and is also developing singing classes in the area. The classes are for beginner to intermedi-ate singers and will help to “strengthen voice, improve your breathing and expand your range”. WITH its’ 31st competitive surfing season waxed off, it was time for the 13th Beach Boardriders to celebrate and reminisce about the rivalries throughout the year, the great waves surfed and the great times had.

At The Heads Restaurant was packed for the 2008 Greenroom sponsored Presentation Night, with Mitch Tricky entertaining the early crowd with some mellow tunes followed by DJ Eff with some funky tunes for the late night revellers. The formal proceedings started early with all of the Micro Groms receiving medals of participation followed by the Club’s newest division the Under 13’s, right through to the Clubs’ Grand Masters Division.

COLD and windy conditions greeted the girls for the final stop of the PISBTW Surfing For Girls Tour Presented By Billabong.

After 9 other locations throughout the state, Ocean Grove was the grand finale. The girls hud-dled on the beach at Ocean Grove to keep warm, however they were all keen to get out into the waves with the surf coaches.

With smaller than expected numbers due to the bad weather, the girls had more one on one time with the surf coaches giving the girls a much bet-ter experience.

With the Global Surf Industries board range on hand, along with local surf shop owner ‘Murph’ from “Murph’s Surf Shop”, the girls were able to test out some of the boards on offer, many of them took the opportunity to have a go on boards which they might not usually ride.

The girls were shown how to rescue an injured surfer or swimmer in the water and were provided with knowledge on how to become safe surfers.

The girls then got a chance to show their skills and put some of their safe surfing knowledge to the test.

Tessie Madam walked away from the day with a GRLmobile show bag filled with GRLmobile prizes. While Vanessa Raniolo won a brand new surfboard courtesy of Global Surf Industries.

Up the creek with a paddle It’s the craze sweeping the Grove - local surf instructor Heather Peck and Murph regularly take newbie paddleboarders up the river to get a handle on the basics. After that it’s the open seas. Recently the paddleboarders have also been joined by the river’s resident dolphin who seems to be happy to play near their exercises.

AT the halfway mark of the bowls season, both Ocean Grove men’s and ladies top sides lead their respective competition ladders. With only 6 rounds to be played after the Christmas break, members are hoping for lots of finals action at the club. Our Bellarine district triples champions, Gwen Goldsmith, Lorraine Jackson and Marg Dower played off for the Zone champion-ships and acquitted themselves admirably. Our girls made it through to the final against a strong team from Colac, but unfortunately they went down in the tie breaker.In the men’s Geelong and District Pairs Championship, Ocean Grove’s John Fry and Gary Burkett have progressed through to the final and will play a pair from Queenscliff. Some major club events due to be played shortly include the Club Championship sin-gles being played between Val Crumbie and Marlene Sutton in the Ladies and the men’s is between Gary Burkett and Peter Nixon. The Ladies minor singles between Kim Mc-Conville and Steph Alsop, the men’s minor singles between Alex Cook and Andrew Johnston, and the men’s veterans singles between Alex Cook and and John Forde. Soccer star takes to Waves

Division 1 Grand Final resultsThe Division 1 grand final was played between Phantoms and SCM. SCM were definitely the “under dogs”, but they acquitted themselves very creditably, with young player Daniel Kuklych making some great dives to get the ball up, and Elise Henry also performing very well in a solid and committed team effort. For Phantoms, we saw strong serving by Scott Tyack and Lisa Krahe, which helped them take the first 2 sets fairly comfortably, 25-8 and 25-16. SCM really took it to them in the third set, but great play from Aaron Krahe, Cheryl Moore and others saw the Phantoms get over the line 25-22 in the third.Meanwhile, on the Division 2 Court, a thrilling match was being played out between Jalapenos, who finished the season on top of the ladder, and the Surf Coast Grovers, who had fought their way into the grand final from fourth place. The Grovers had bought their own cheer squad, com-plete with flags waving, but the Jalapenos were on a mission, chasing everything, and working hard to use the three shots to best advantage. We saw some great saves by Mitch Holmes and Michael Uldrikis for Jalapenos, enabling them to take the first 2 sets 25-20 and 25-22. In the third set, the Surf Coast Grovers got off to an excellent start, thanks to some powerful serving, and forged ahead to a 9-1 lead. Jalapenos fought back to make it 12-14, thanks to Tamika Butters, Maddie Carrigg and the rest of the team, but the Grovers took the third set 25-20. All the Grovers played well, but Lachie Dickson did some great blocking and spiking, and Georgia Ellis and Maddie Stewart-Teh were very consistent. The Newcastle Jets A-League defender took local players through a series of ball control, shielding, juggling and dribbling exercises in the clinic organised by Surfside Waves soccer club.

Collendina Cricket Club held a sponsors lunch for some of their supporters at the weekend. Despite the disappointment of not seeing any cricket because it was rained off, the club still put on a good thank you spread at the clubhouse.

Tony Edmonstone was on form for the Grubbers taking 2/23 and hitting 39 against Collendina, but it wasn’t enough to upset the Cobras run which took them up to equal third on the ladder before rain washed out the weekend one-dayer.


Ocean Grove JuniorsOCEAN Grove Juniors have continued their prom-ising start to the season, especially in the Under 15 and Under 13 age groups, with both sides now well and truly in finals contention as we head into the Christmas break. The Under 17’s missed a golden opportunity to record their first win of the season last Saturday against Marshall, and with the last game before the Christmas Break abandoned due to rain, they will have to wait for the new year to re-deem themselves. The Under 11’s have improved their skills in all facets of the game with each pass-ing week and the coaching staff could not be hap-pier with these young men and their attitude to and enjoyment of the game.Under 17’sSince the last report, our most senior juniors have come agonisingly close to a breakthrough win and with a little more application and grit; these boys will not be far away from tasting success. Chasing 131 to win in their Round 5 match against Marshall, Mitch Evans and Aaron Habgood again got the team off to a solid start with an opening partnership of 41. Aaron compiled a patient 21 before he was brilliant-ly caught at point, in what otherwise would have been four certain runs. Mitch followed a short time later for 27, after looking very comfortable against the Marshall pace attack, but he came unstuck in the first over of spin and was caught at first slip. Jar-ryn Dower (21) and Billy Foorde-Engelsman (13) tried valiantly to get the team over the line, but in the end, the boys fell short by 25 runs. The final game before the Christmas Break was a scheduled 20/20 game against Drysdale, however the excellent rain received right across the region ensured that no play was possible for any of the junior grades. Under 15’sOur middle juniors continued on their winning way in the completion of their Round 5 match against a very competitive Drysdale outfit, getting home in the end by 28 runs. Chasing our excellent total of 5 for 225, Drysdale were eventually bowled out for 197, with Paul Dreher, James Habgood, Jack Cad-man and Jake Armstrong taking two wickets apiece. The Round 6 20/20 game against Portarlington was washed out, leaving the boys sitting half a game out-side the top four as they head into the Xmas Break.A special mention must go to Dylan Thorley, who played in the Under 15 Bellarine representative side in a game against Colac at Colac on December 7. Dylan opened the bowling and returned the figures of 1 for 5 off four overs. Well done Dylan – Great Effort.

Under 13’sOur junior juniors have continued their strong form and now sit equal second going into the Xmas break. A sustained effort after the break should hopefully see the boys cement their position in the top-two and play off in the final. Completing their Round 5 two-day fixture against Collendina, the boys fin-ished the game all out for 248. Brad Fendyk finished unbeaten on 52, Myles Henderson 50 no, Jackson Kent 36 and Cameron Habgood a quick-fire 34 not out. In reply, Collendina came up short finishing at 7 for 155, with Myles Henderson taking 3 for 4 and Lachie Barber 2 for 14. The washed out Round 6 20/20 game against the top team – Drysdale A, would have been a great test for the boys, however it wasn’t meant to be and so hopefully the boys can continue their fine form after the Xmas Break and taste some finals action. Congratulations to Cameron Habgood, Jackson Kent, Myles Henderson and Brad Fendyk for their selection in the Under 13 Bellarine Representative team which played Colac in Colac on December 7. Jackson received the best player award for Bel-larine after making 33 not out and taking two wick-ets. Well done Jacko and well done to all the boys for representing the Ocean Grove Cricket Club and Bellarine Region with distinction.Under 11’sOur most junior juniors have really settled in well improving dramatically each week in all facets of the game. Stephen and Luke could not be happier with all of the boys’ development and attitude and although the game is not about winning and losing at this level, a first up win against Barwon Heads last week, had all the boys smiling. A special mention must go to our four top-age boys - Ned Thorley Fraser Ryan, Lachlan Barber and Harry Walker. These boys have been alter-nating each week between the Under 13’s and Under 11’s and their attitude and commitment to both teams this year has been outstanding. Well done boys, you not only set the standard for the more junior boys in the team to follow, but you also display what this club is all about – teamwork.Just a reminder that although the juniors are on an ex-tended break until the 31st of January 2009, the annual Junior Country Week tournament will be conducted between the 5th and the 8th of January across the Gee-long Region, including the Bellarine Peninsula.On a final note, the Ocean Grove Cricket Club Christmas Party will be held this Saturday Night, the December 20 at the Cricket Clubrooms, commencing at 6.30pm. There is a small entry fee and Santa Claus will arrive by Helicopter at around 8pm. All Welcome.Go Grubbers!

Runners at the ready for Grove’s Rip to River

THE opening of the new Bellarine Aquatic Centre in Ocean Grove is likely to lead to a huge increase in senior swimmers. The Boroughcoutas Masters Swimming Club will be starting weekly training sessions in February. OCEAN Grove Surf Lifesaving is making its last preparations for next month’s 29th annual Rip to River.

The event on Sunday January 4 will feature the Rip to River classic 10km beach race from

Point Lonsdale to Ocean Grove Main Beach as well as a 5km challenge, a traditional Walkers event and the Ripper Nipper Fun Run.

The walkers and the 5km both start at 10am. Then the 10km race and the Nipper Fun Run

start at 10.30am. Full details and entry conditions can be found
