jf I < > > 0 i r r THE OCALA BANNER PAGE ELEVEN A STRONG ANSWER TO THE I BUSINESS MENS DOCUMENT- To the Citizens and Voters of Marion County Florida- In view of the fact that a number t of the merchants and business men of Ocala have addressed a communica- tion ¬ f to you deploring the condition of tile county and mourning over the cost mt an election we wish to analyze the t object and purpose of their mournful I petition- In the first place the petition was l gotten up by lawyers hired and paid i by the barrooms for the job In the econd place the petition pretends to appeal to voters against calling the election but in fact it is gotten up f entirely for a campaign document to- t try to Influence the people to vote the wet ticket They knew that when the I article was written we had the peti- tion ¬ 1 calling for an election already toned by more than onefourth of the registered voters of the county and they knew the law relative to such a I t petition v I They say elections are costly yet t the very men who wrote the mournful f document and almost everyone who signed it was red hot for an election t on bonding the county when it was conceded from the very start that F bonds would be defeated Why didnt t thy cry out then against the expense r of an election 1 I They say elections are costly yet r they say they will put the county to- t the expense of another election two yrs from now and a constant ex- pense ¬ every two years unless the county goes back wet They here un- mindfully ¬ i admit that the county will KO dry Although they weep over the expense of an election they are will- ing ¬ to call them any time when they are in their own interest I want to- t ay to the citizens of Marlon county that the men who originated this Business Mens appeal the barroom men and a few others care no more I for the expense of this election than they do for the expense of overcharg- ing ¬ for bad whiskey They say that If the revenue derived fcfrom the licensed saloon be lost it will be necessary to materially Increase the tax rate on property They know this to be untrue mid I say thlh from the r authority and testimony from twenty odd counties of this state We now have 32 dry counties In Florida and I have testimony from more than 20 of them all certifying that closing the saloons did not Increase the expense- one cent In the county and most of them declare that It lessened the ex l ense from S500 to SrOOO per year Why Is it that these business men will not take the statements from the officials of these counties hut con ¬ tinue to make statements that they cannot prove We will give to any man a reward of S T 0 who will prove- b ft majority of the county officers and the business men of any county in this state that doing away with the saloons has Increased taxes one cent Suwannee county declares that her county expenses are more than 1000 k lwar year less than when she had open I saloons Lake City says that she saves since the town and county went dry more- than J100 per month on police hire Hamilton county says that In two years the county saved In court ex- penses ¬ alone 532955 These savings would soon build a court house in Ocala Alachua county officials certify that i the expenses of the courts are 1045 less per year than when the county was wet This was over and above all costs and rewards Many other counties give the same statements Can you tell me why these men turn- a deaf ear to such facts These gentlemen for whom we have 1 great respect have made a mistake 1 They have conveyed the Idea that as business men they should be consulted i above everybody else In a movement touching the moral and financial In- terest ¬ of the county While every bus- iness ¬ man Is a blessing in his place B nd has a right to express his opin- ion ¬ i an a citizen yet It Is going too i far when Ve say that business men as- a r claw should be consulted before we Inaugurate a reform Even the king- s served by the neldantl farm And 1 we believe that the man who toils In the field should Ih consulted as much I as the business man To read their petition one not ac- quainted ¬ with Ocala would get the J iieit that
